Make the pinch at the pumpless painful and enjoy driving

(ARA) — With the price of $4 a gallon for regular gasoline becominga common occurrence across America, relief is miles away. The U.S.Energy Information Administration is predicting that the national av-erage price for a gallon during the summer driving season will rise to$3.81, up $1.05 from last year’s $2.76 price tag. Americans’ wallets arehurting.

Even with tighter budgets, millions of drivers are hitting the roadsfor a summer road trip with a desire to make every dollar count. Formotorists, now is the time to make sure their vehicle performs at fullstrength, to save at the pump.

H e re ’s a simple checklist of tips motorists should perform to helpkeep their vehicles running safer, longer and more cost-effectivelyduring the warm summer months:

* Check that tread: Motorists must take a few minutes to inspecttheir tires, or to visit a local tire and service outlet for a check-up. Theprice of gasoline provides even more incentive to check tire conditionsand air pressure before heading off on summer trips. Advances in tiretechnology are helping deliver a new generation of moderately pricedtires that offer the all-season traction and long tread wear consumershave come to expect, but with enhanced rolling resistance to help savemoney on gas. For example, Goodyear’s Assurance Fuel Max tires, now available for passenger cars, SUVs and CUVs, fit 80 percent ofconsumer vehicles and help save up to 2,600 miles worth of gas overthe life of a set of tires. How do the tires help save gas? Advanced poly-mers reduce friction as the tires roll, reducing energy loss, which re-sults in improved fuel efficiency ... and that 2,600 miles translates intodriving from New York City to the Las Vegas Strip for free. Driving ex-perts across the country have even chosen Fuel Max to help break fueleconomy world records. Reigning fuel efficiency champs, Helen andJohn Taylor, chose Fuel Max to help shatter the 48 Contiguous U.S.States Fuel Economy Guinness World Record, setting it at a whopping67.9 mpg over 9,505 miles.

* Don’t overload: Vehicle overloading can occur when trying to jamtoo many extra items for an extended vacation. Check the owner’smanual for the maximum recommended load details. An extra 100pounds in the trunk reduces a typical car’s fuel economy by 1 to 2 per-cent.

* Watch for inflation: Proper tire inflation is essential for increasedautomotive safety, optimum driving performance and significant costsavings, including better fuel mileage. Tires should be inflated to thevehicle manufacturer recommendations printed on the vehicle doorplacard or in the glove box and should be checked monthly. Over-in-flation can lead to premature or irregular tire wear and under-infla-tion reduces a vehicle’s fuel efficiency by an average of 3.3 percent.Easy-to-find maintenance advice is offered at www.goodyear.com.

* Get tuned in: Before taking that long trip, visit a trusted automo-tive outlet and make sure your car is properly tuned. Regular vehiclemaintenance can improve gas mileage by an average of 4.1 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

* Wear a cap: Vehicle gas caps must be tight and undamaged. Ap-proximately 17 percent of the vehicles on U.S. highways have eithermisused or missing gas caps, causing millions of gallons of gas to va-porize into the atmosphere.

* Be smooth: Aggressive driving wastes gas and can reduce your fu-el mileage by 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent in the city. Ob-serve the speed limit.

* Get up in the gears: The higher the gear you drive in, the loweryour engine speed is, which can improve fuel efficiency. So change upa gear whenever you can. This can dramatically impact fuel efficien-c y.

* Cruisin’ U.S.A.: Using cruise control on the highway helps youmaintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will prevent stressfulengine acceleration.

Help keep your car from early retirementEasy tips to helpyou get the mostout of your vehicle

(ARA) — Many Americans aretrying to get the full value out oftheir vehicle, as evidenced by therecent findings that the averageage of a vehicle on the road hasreached over 10 years old, accord-ing to an R.L. Polk & Co. study. Inorder to make sure that their ve-hicles remain durable, it is impor-tant that motorists look for waysto help keep their vehicles run-ning smoothly, longer.

“The engine in a vehicle ismuch like the heart in our bodies:In order for the heart to be fit andstrong, we need to take care of it,”says Jeff Hsu, technology manag-er for the Quaker State brand, who wants to help drivers take thesteps that can help extend the lifeof their vehicles. “Proper and reg-ular maintenance of a vehicle canhelp save money on repairs downthe road, especially for vehiclesthat have reached milestones inage and mileage.”

There are many ways to help in-crease your vehicle’s longevityand keep your peace of mind in-tact. Here are a few tips to helpyou get the most out of one of yourlargest investments.

Make it your routineJust as regular check-ups with

your doctor are important foryour own health, heeding regular-ly scheduled maintenance inter-vals as determined by the vehiclemanufacturer is also an essentialstep to help keep your vehiclehealthy. Taking your vehicle inand having it regularly main-tained helps to make sure your ve-hicle has what it needs to keep itrunning. Of the overall mainte-nance regimen, one of the mostfrequently missed maintenancetasks is the oil change. By chang-

ing your oil as recommended bythe vehicle manufacturer, you canhelp maintain the performance ofyour engine. Regular mainte-nance and recommended inter-vals are typically outlined in a ve-hicle’s owner’s manual.

Take it easyTo make sure your vehicle can

stand the course of time, it is im-portant to avoid unnecessarystrain on the engine.

“A vehicle that has been sittingfor an extended period of timewill have next to no oil left on themoving parts of the engine, as ithas accumulated in the oil pan,”says Hsu. “Allowing your engineto warm up by easing into accel-eration will help the oil flowquicker and decrease the amountof wear and friction-related dam-age that may occur.”

Maybe even more importantthan taking it easy on startup ismaking sure to not overexert yourvehicle. Constant, high RPMs,short braking, high-speed drivingand other severe types of drivingcan lead to accelerated engineand transmission wear and poten-tially more substantial issues.

Keep it clean“When trying to keep a vehicle

running and to extend its life, it isimportant to not overlook thebody of the vehicle,” says Hsu.

C o n s u m e rs ’ vehicles likely takea beating throughout the yearwith the months of harsh winterconditions and corrosive ele-ments. High temperatures, birddroppings, tree sap and UV raysin the warmer months can alsocause damage to the interior andexterior of a vehicle. Keeping ve-hicles clean can help protectthem from the chemicals and dirtthat may attack the car’s finishand undercarriage.

Make sure it’s coveredHaving your vehicle covered for

any issues that may arise is im-portant, and extended warranty

programs are becoming more andmore prevalent. Last year alone,Americans bought 250 million ex-tended warranties, according tothe Service Contract IndustryCouncil. There are also differenttypes of aftermarket warrantiesavailable to consumers throughthe products they use; but there isonly one program that offers mo-torists a full warranty and thepossibility to receive a cash re-wa rd.

Quaker State has recently up-dated one of the longest running, easiest to use and most compre-hensive motor oil warrantiesavailable to motorists, the QuakerState Lubrication Limited War-ranty. The Quaker State Lubrica-tion Limited Warranty, which isfree to qualifying consumers whouse Quaker State products, pro-tects 15 engine parts from lubri-

cant-related failure and providesm o to r i s t s ’ vehicles with coveragefor up to 10 years or 300,000 miles,whichever comes first.

In addition, if your vehicle doesend up making it to the 300,000-mile marker under the QuakerState Lubrication Limited War-ranty program, you can receivethe cash value of your vehicle aspart of the Quaker State CashBack Bonus; a program designedto not only reward those motoristswho view their vehicle’s mileageas a badge of honor but also in-centivizes them to keep theirhigh-mileage vehicles and main-tain them.

Following these simple tips canhelp promote a long life for yourvehicle. For more informationabout the limited warranty pro-gram, visit www.quaker-s ta t e. c o m .

Keep your engine cool when temps heat up(ARA) — Yo u ’ve waited so long for summer

vacation, and now you’re ready for that fami-ly getaway or road trip. Whether you’re cruis-ing down the open road or taking the kids tosummer camp, the last thing you want is a ve-hicle problem that leaves you stranded on theside of the road.

Cooling system issues are the leading causeof roadside breakdowns, according to the U.S.Department of Transportation. To make mat-ters worse, an estimated 23 million people areoperating their vehicles with the wrong kindof coolant.

During the hot months of summer, it’s justas important to hydrate your car as it is yourbody. Using the wrong coolant for your carcould result in radiator and pump damage. Not sure which coolant is right for your car?Check the label under your hood or your own-er’s manual. If you are buying coolant foryour vehicle, make sure to read the label toconfirm the product is made for your vehi-cle’s make and model.

An excellent method of preventative main-tenance for your cooling system is to have it

flushed. Refer to your owner’s manual for rec-ommendations. The frequency of how manytimes a year you have it done depends on thevehicle you drive and the conditions you driveit in. If you’re in a state that has swelteringsummers, you may need to change yourcoolant twice a year or just before summerand winter. If your weather is moderate, anannual cooling system flush will be sufficient.

Other checks are simple. Make sure yourhoses are attached properly and that they donot have leaks and are not cracked or brittle.Look for signs of corrosion on your radiatorand check to see if the radiator cap fits tight-ly. Are the coolant levels correct? Is yourcoolant clean and free of oil and sediment? In-correct coolant levels and dirty coolant couldalso lead to your engine overheating.

If you’re just running water through yourradiator, consider using an anti-freeze. It mayseem a strange product to use during the heatof summer, but antifreeze contains corrosioninhibitors that have a higher boiling pointthan water. When having your cooling systemflushed, ask the mechanic to check the ther-

mostat. If for some reason your thermostat isstuck, an incorrect reading could lead to yourengine overheating.

Another way to prevent your engine fromoverheating is to use a radiator coolant addi-tive like Royal Purple’s Purple Ice. Purple Iceis a high-performance, synthetic radiatorcoolant additive that reduces engine heat ingasoline or diesel engines by optimizingcoolant flow and lubricating water pumpseals. “Purple Ice not only helped cool my en-gine, but it also made a noticeable improve-ment in its daily performance,” says Leo Nel-son of Beaumont, Texas. Purple Ice also re-duces engine heat in vehicles that are towingcampers and boats.

Although gas prices at the pump are higherthan last summer, Americans are still relyingon their cars to travel to their destinationswhether it is for work or vacation. Taking thetime to make sure your car is ready for thesummer drive will keep you on the road in-stead of stuck on the side of it.
