The building dates from the mid 1850s and fascinating details about life at the police station and cases from the Petty Sessions are revealed! An evening with AlFred wAinwrightFriday 14 september 7.30pmJohn Burland takes the audience on a journey through AW’s life from his humble upbringing in Blackburn through his life-changing visit to the Lake District in 1930 and then his eventual move to Kendal in 1940 and the fifteen years spent writing the outstanding Pictorial Guides to the Lake District between 1952 and 1967. It reveals a surreptitious love affair in the mid 60s and concludes with his final journey “in a little box” to the summit of Haystacks where his ashes were scattered in 1991.Tickets £5 in advance, £6 on the door. The company aims to show the talents of people with learning disabilities so they can be included in the mainstream cultural mix of a diverse society. globetrotting lecture, illustrated by Doug’s dramatic photography, you’ll hear how he went from climbing crags near his boyhood home in Nottingham using his mother’s washing line as a rope, to adventures on the mile high vertical granite of the Arctic’s Mount Asgard – without the washing line! Dark at tea-time and sleeping indoors: nothing ever happens in the winter holidays.” Arthur Ransome’s classic children’s story Winter Holiday, part of the Swallows and Amazons series of books, was published in 1933. Set in a part-idealised version of the Lake District, the plot concerns two new characters trying to make friends with the tight-knit Walker and Blackett children as they plan an expedition to the very north of the lake in the depths of winter. Duncan and Nick Hall of The Hall Brothers, with the kind permission of the Arthur Ransome Literary Estate, have adapted the book for the stage and Otley Community Players will be the first ever theatre company to tackle this very popular text. The show will include live music, original, traditional and contemporary songs all written or curated by The Hall Brothers and Friends.Tickets £7/£5.

FilM nightthe long hope and others 7.30pm40 years after it first ascent, one of the world’s top climbers, Dave MacLeod, sets out to climb St John’s Head – a wild and remote 1150 foot sea cliff on the island of Hoy – in a single day. His climb is captured close-up with the latest HD cameras and contrasted with the challenges of Ed Drummond’s first ascent through interviews and archive material.
