Cook Up is the creative heart of BAC - everything we do to invent the future of theatre starts here. From our vibrant Scratch programme to music gigs, parties and the best new shows we have seen out and about - this is the place to see the next big thing in theatre at its moment of creation.

Up to three times a year we will develop Scratch ideas in to large-scale productions that take over the whole building. These are seen by thousands of people, each revealing and transforming another part of our space.

Bursting out of the walls of BAC, we will develop Scratch ideas into productions that will be presented across London, nationally and internationally, providing you with a chance to see the future of theatre in sites and venues across the UK and beyond.

Talk to us

We’re just back from Edinburgh where our partnership with Summerhall launched BAC Take Out. Artists, audiences and critics loved it. The Scotsman described ‘Britain’s hottest theatre…at the Fringe’s hottest venue’.

Back in Battersea this autumn we’re cooking up the future of theatre in our beautiful Town Hall home. Every week artists can be found in spaces across our building developing new ideas for theatre. BAC Scratch is at the heart of our Cook Up Season, alongside food, drink, Homegrown (our young peoples theatre) and the best of work we have seen elsewhere. Come and join us.

Blue Skies Instillation Rhiannon Armstrong

Dates: 15 Sept - 29 Oct

The Blues Skies Booths are polling booths that have been transformed in the night by utopian guerilla artists.

Too often our votes do not count. We end up choosing between the lesser of two evils, because we are told that what we want is not possible. Well it should be. It is. Imag-ine your ideal performance: what would it be like? Does it take place on the moon? Is one of the performers your dead hamster Pipsqueak? Do you come out alive?

Cast your vote, and it will not disappear. I hereby declare that as soon as you cast your vote, I am committed to making your ideal performance happen in reality.

HUM Installation Ray Lee

Dates: 15 Sept - 29 Oct

A kinetic theatre for our Foyer by Ray Lee.

In the open area above the grand staircase a series of motors are suspended from the ceiling to a height of approximately three meters from the stairs. Activated by the presence of the audience, centrifugal force spins out three small loudspeakers that are hung from the motor. Digital sound stores are activated by the movement and emit discrete sounds, each through its own loudspeaker.

Inspired by the sound of bees and insects humming in trees, HUM creates a swirling, throbbing hum of electromagnetic sound and noise that will engage the audience, animate the foyer and encourage visitors to explore the staircase.

LOST LINE [reconnected] Installation The Campinglis Bellhall’s

Dates: 15 Sept - 29 Oct LOST LINE [reconnected] asks you to talk. Talk to people who share this building with you, talk about your loves, your loneliness and the brilliant idea you just had.It uses a technology we call the landline, you might have heard it called the house or home phone, but it was once just called a phone.

A phone connected you to a place, a build-ing, a fixed point, you called with out know-ing who would answer, you called a place and who ever answered would try and help you find out what you wanted to know. It was fun and friendly and a little bit braver than sending a text.

The Paper Cinema’s Odyssey

Dates: 13-15 OctTime: 8pmPrice: Pay What You Can

Set on the wine dark sea illuminated by the rosy fingered dawn and an angle poise – armed with only paper cuts, musical instruments and cunning fingers.

SCRATCH PERFORMANCES

11

A weekend of rough and ready flashes of inspiration, Freshly Scratched is an opportunity for artists to try out fresh theatrical ideas in front of an audience.

At the core of BAC’s Freshly Scratched, unlike other showcase-based events, is a genuine interest in exploring an idea in front of an audience, taking risks with the material presented and using audience feedback in order to help think through the next steps in developing the work.

A tale of one husband’s long return to his home and family after war. Overcoming obstacles both natural and super natural, on the high seas and across his own threshold. This corner stone of literature founded on centuries of oral tales is re-told in our own mute and obtuse ways.

Some say an illustrated song, a finger ballet. It’s the meeting of music, drawing, puppetry, film and theatre.
