AWRA Florida Section MeetingFriday, March 27, Lake Placid, Florida, Archbold Biological Station
Join AWRA for an informative meeting focusing on Lakes and stormwater in south Florida. The meeting will be held at the Archbold Biological Station near Lake Placid.
The Archbold Biological Station, lying within the headwaters of the Everglades in south central Florida, is known throughout the world as a cutting-edge research facility. Archbold has created real conservation solutions across diverse ecosystems ranging from the pristine, ancient sand dunes of the Lake Wales Ridge—home to plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth—to the waters, wetlands, and wildlife of the vast open ranchlands lying within this watershed. The headwaters flow south into Lake Okeechobee and then drain to the coasts. The health of the headwaters affects millions of Floridians. The Archbold Biological Station is a wellspring of knowledge for this watershed, one of the most important in America, and its scientists stand at the forefront of the fight to build a sustainable future for Florida.
A thirst for knowledge and an uncompromising commitment to excellence are at the heart of Archbold’s contribution to understanding and protecting Florida’s plants, animals, lands, and waters. The depth, breadth, and quality of its research gathered over nearly 75 years has made it an international icon. The Station’s unprecedented knowledge base has informed the decisions of land managers, public agencies, and land owners throughout Florida and the world. It is the trusted standard bearer of dependable research that is guiding conservation and restoration solutions, strategies, and policies, and inspiring students to carry the mission forward for decades to come.
For decades universities such as Harvard, Cornell, and Yale have chosen to bring their undergraduate and graduate classes to Archbold. Faculty members from Florida’s universities and colleges are frequent visitors. For many students, Archbold provides their first opportunity to explore and study an important ecosystem in a biological station setting that offers a wealth of existing research and the invaluable guidance of staff scholars.

The first meeting of 2015 was very successful with over 150 professionals and students attending the 24th Annual Southwest Florida Water Resources Conference in Ft. Myers. The technical presentations were very informative, the student poster session was the largest one that I remember having, and the content of the posters was very impressive. The top awards for this year’s poster session went to high school students from the Oxbridge Academy of the Palm Beaches. See below for a summary of the winning posters. As always the facilities at the Florida Gulf Coast University were excellent for this conference.
This year’s scholarship and grant applications are being accepted until May 15, 2015, please pass the word to all the students and teachers you know so we can give away the funds for student and water resources education that we have worked so hard raising. Our great education committee has updated the application forms and have them all posted on our web site so the application process is easier and all done online. Great job education committee!
Our next meeting will be March 27th at the Archbold Biological Station in the Lake Placid area of southcentral Florida. The rest of the meetings for 2015 are coming together with set dates and preliminary programs being established. We will have a great year!
I look forward to seeing everyone at the Archbold Biological Station on March 27th, so register now!

Applications for the 2015 Grants, Awards and Scholarship are Now AvailableThe JB Butler Science Grant, William V. Storch Award, Sanford N. Young Scholarship and the High School Scholarship applications are now available on the Section website – www.awraflorida.org. The application deadline is May 15. Applications may be submitted anytime up to May 15, 2015.
The J.B. Butler Science Grant is awarded to pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade teachers and environmental centers to aid in water resource education. Each year, approximately five $500 grants are awarded. As of this year, AWRA Florida has awarded nearly $47,000 in J.B Butler Science Grants. This program has provided assistance to dozens of teachers and thousands of students.
The William V. Storch Award is given to graduate and undergraduate students to support educational activities. Since its inception, approximately $41,000 has been awarded to students by AWRA Florida. There are two awards available each year, each at $1,500.
The Sanford N. Young Scholarship is an endowed fund designed to provide funding for at least one $2,000 scholarship each year. It is available to both graduate and undergraduate students. To date, AWRA Florida has awarded $14,000 in Sanford N. Young Scholarships.
AWRA Florida began offering a High School Scholarship for Florida high school seniors in 2013. As of this year, a total of $2,000 has been awarded to high school students. Each year, AWRA Florida will award at least one $1,000 scholarship to a Florida high school senior who has demonstrated outstanding achievements in academic performance and community involvement and has an intent to pursue academic studies in the water resource related fields of geology, engineering, ecology and/or marine biology at a Florida college or university. The scholarship recipient will also be awarded an annual student membership to the Florida Section for the following year. The Scholarship will be awarded upon confirmation of enrollment in a Florida college or university.
Continued financial support for the Rosanne Clementi Education Program*Financial support for the education program comes from meeting revenues, directed donations and proceeds from the Silent Auction. The Silent Auction traditionally is held during the Annual Meeting held in July. You can help support the AWRA Florida Section Education Program and the students by continuing to attend the AWRA Florida Section bi-monthly meetings, by sponsoring the bi-monthly meetings, by donating to and purchasing silent auction items and by making directed donations to the education program. You can make a donation directly from the website at www.awraflorida.org. Every amount helps the students. No amount is too small or too large.

Student Funds
Every year our chapter of AWRA gives away thousands of dollars to college and, increasingly, high school students. These funds can take several forms – scholarships for tuition, funding for AWRA meeting attendance, or grants for school programs. We have recently supported several students from a high school: Oxbridge Academy of the Palm Beaches. These students, working with Dr. Teresa Thorton, have amazed us with the level of sophistication in not only their water resources understanding, but their presentation and interpersonal skills. Recently students from Oxbridge have attended and presented posters at both the AWRA National Meeting this past November in DC, and at our last AWRA meeting in Ft. Myers. In fact, Oxbridge students placed in the top three spots in our AWRA Florida Section Student Research Poster Contest – and they were competing against college undergrads! We hope to have these students involved in water resources for a long time to come. A thank you letter from Dr. Thorton and her students is below.
