Helimax Axe CP belt drive tail (MOD2) modificationInstructions

This conversion will add total control over your Axe tail. No more burnt out tail motors or fried

4 in 1s. Very sharp and accurate tail authority with 30 size feel low running costs.

Some frame modification is required. A Dremel tool (or similar) is recommended.

Main Frame:

The main frame needs to modified to allow room for the new belt pulley and idler assembly.

The servo needs to be removed before cutting frame

Belt idler assembly:

Assemble the belt idler block as pictured.

Place into frame ready for boom to slide through it.

Boom and Tail:The boom is supplied with a Teflon belt separator. This eliminates teeth rubbing inside the

boom. Also allows the belt to be loose, which will help in efficiency. It is optional but

recommended. The belt if inserted first, followed by the separator, from the tail end. Small

dovetail stops the separator slipping all the way through.

The Teflon separator to be pre-twisted 90 degrees.

Slip on the tail boom clamp and assemble the tail. Note the separator must be horizontal and not

touching the belt when tensioned.

Tail Servo and push rod:Drill holes into clamps to suit your servo.

Fit the plastic ball links to the metal push rod. Note the A mark on the ball link, this side faced

out. (The hole is smaller on one side, and will be difficult to fit). Fixing the ball link to the inner

(closed to the arm screw) hole on the servo arm is recommended.

Ensure servo arm and pitch slider arm are parallel, as shown in the picture below.

Further adjustments cam be made either mechanically or through the radio after test flight.

Main Gear assembly.

Pre-assemble the main gear

Fit main gear then insert main shaft, remembering the shaft collar and spacers

Loosen and remove screws Insert original gear cap screw (nut is not required as the

Final adjustments:

Tension the belt (not too tight) and tighten boom screws on the main frame. Push the idler block

into the frame as far as possible and tighten the clamp screw. Ensure the boom is not touchingthe belt idlers.

The tail should turn into the blade wash, as illustrated below

Further Notes:

WD-40 is recommended to lube the belt. This will increase the efficiency and help lube the

bearings. The belt will not be harmed.

Belt tension needs to be firm, not tight. Best way to test the tension is to hold the tail and turn the

main gear. The belt should not jump when little force is applied. Tighten until the belt stops

jumping.

Front belt idlers can be levered/adjusted up if the belt is running too high or low on the front

pulley. Watch out they dont touch the main gear.

Other items (with tested recommendations) required for completing the mod are:

Gyro: GWS PG-03, Telebee HH, Esky HH

Main motor ESC 10-20 amp, depending if the heli is fixed pitch or collective (electronic speed

controller): Shulze, GWS. Recommend changing over to a brushless system, for a little extra

cost.

Tail servo: HS-50 and HS-56.
