BANDSPREADS,SUNSHINE' DESPITEROUGH START

5unshlne Brass, Florlda's flrst communtty brass band, was offlclally Incorporatedon June ZO, 1985. The group was formed by lts conductor, Karen D. Kneeburg, arecent muslc graduate of the Unlverslty of 5outh Florlda. Karen's Interest In brassbandlng came as a result of her work wtth the Youth Band program of the 5alvaUonArmy In 5t. Petersburg, Florlda and In seelng the need for a communltyorganlzatlon whlch would serve the needs of brass players who have graduatedfrom hlgh schools and colleges ln the Tampa Bay area. As a euphonlumlst, Ms.Kneeburg performed a composltlon on her senlor recltal whlch requtred a bra55band forthe accompanlment. Aqulrhgthe necessary Instruments (alto homs, barltones, Eb cornet, etc.) was the flrst problem. lt was soon learned that a collegeIn the area had a complete set of brass band Instrumenls purchased some yearsago when lt was a boy's school. The college agreed to loan the Instrumentsneeded In order to perform the recltal and later extended the loan for the formatlonof 5unshine Brass. After slx rehearsals, the group performed tts flrst concert to anenthuslastlc audlence on Aprll 27th at a local reflrement center. The programIncluded "lnvlctus l4arch" by Wtlltam fltmes, "Blow the Wlnd 5outherly" by €ordonLangford, the "Flreman's Polka" byW.5. Rtpley, "NewYork, NewYork" anangedby a member of the band, and "Marchtng Wtth Sousa" by €ordon Langford.

After taklng the month of May for vacaflon, the band has conflnued to rehearsethrough the summer bulldlng a repertolre and maklng a demonstraUon tape to usefor securlng future concerts. Plans for thls year Include performances at the TampaArtswatch Festlval, the Flortda 5tate Falr, reflrement center concerts and hopefullythe North Amerlcan Brlflsh Brass Band Champlonshlps.

As a result of the non-proft corporatlon status, the band member: are asssedmembershlp dues In order to pay for the expenses Involved In operaflng theorganlzatlon. Contrlbuflons from communtty agencles and buslnesses wlll also besought. f'lembers of the band are Involved In upgradlngthe qualtty of Instruments(alto horns, comets, tubas, etc.) and are enthuslas0c about the prospects of thborganlzatlon.

A few weeks ago the band muslc revtewerforthe Fbrtda Music Directormagazlne contacted 5unshlne Brass and asked lf the bahd would revlew new brasband composltlons. Under thls agreement, the composlflons are read andevaluated by the band. The results are then reported In the magazlne wlthInformatlon about 5unshlne Brass and the group ls allowed to keep thecomposltlons as compllmentary coples. We feel that thls ls a valuable opportunltyfor publlclty, for servlce to the State, and for bulldlng a mustc ltbrary.

Would you be able to assist in puttingme in touch with any interested parties;i.e., promoters, cultural bodies, etc.,who would be Dreoared to invlte theband to tour Dart of the United 5tates- maybe one of your top bands wouldbe hterested in forming an Associattonwlth Wingates with a view to exchangingInformation and possibly a tour couldresult from such an Associaflon

Obviously, the question of finance isof prime lmportance, I am sure thatshould the band be Invited we couldobtaln a certaln amount of financialsupport from our 5ponsors and othersupporte15 In Creat Britain, concertsarranged In America would probablycover the remainder, but it would allnrnge on an invitaUon to visit America.Wlthout doubt we feel that if a tour

Brass band music ts readlly avallablein England, but somewhat more dlfficultto obtaln here. There are, as l'm sureyou already know, mu5lc stores InEngland whlch wtll deal In U.5. funds fora nomlnal fee. I would thtnk that thebrass band movement in thls countrywould beneflt from Informtng anyinterested partles exactly how they canobtaln the muslc and cataloos fromthese companies. Perhaps y;ou mtghtencourage someone llke Robert Klng tocarry a complete llne of thls muslc and(on requet) to order ltems he doesn'tstock from at least the larger Engltshcompanles. Many people are a btt lazywhen lt comes to deallng with red tapeand don't know the procedures forobtaining forelgn music. lf you canstraighten thelr path a llttle, you mtghtdiscover conslderable potential.

Especlally h the case of thesmaller school systems where comingup wlth a full concert bandInstrumentatlon ls dtfflcult, afully-manned brass band mtght verywell be posslble. Also, the Instrumentsare avallable In all prlce ranges, andbrass Instruments would be llkely torequlre much less maintenance, easingthe straln on the budget.
