DELFT – Slechts vier dagen na de start van de kaartverkoop van BkBeats 2010 was het tweejaarlijkse festival al weer uitverkocht. Jimmy Verhoeven, vanuit het Stylosbestuur verantwoordelijk voor het festival: “We zijn er hartstikke blij mee. Dit was voor ons ook zeer onverwacht. Wat aan de snelle uitverkoop bijgedragen kan hebben, is dat we dit jaar minder kaartjes aanboden terwijl er meer studenten zijn, plus het feit dat het festival voor het eerst in dit gebouw plaatsvindt”. Deze editie van BkBeats werden er 1800 kaarten verkocht, tegenover 2800 bij de editie in 2008.

BK CITY – In het verlengde van de toenemend intensieve samenwerking tussen de Faculteit Bouwkunde en Afrikaanse architectuurinstel-lingen, zoals de huidige ontwerpstudio’s CSI Lagos en RMIT-Urbanism Kumasi, vindt er op 27 en 28 april een conferentie plaats met lezingen over Maputo (Mozambique) en een preview van African Perspectives 2011, in Casablanca. Tevens wordt het boek Modern Architecture In Africa – een studie van Antoni Folkers naar de invloed van het modernisme op de oor-spronkelijke Afrikaanse bouwkunst – gepre-senteerd.

Verschillende Afrikaanse sprekers, waaronder Joe Osae-Addo (Cross-Currents in ‘Addosphere’) en Ola Uduku, zullen hun licht laten schijnen over typische opgaven in Maputo, waarbij de delicate omgang met het gebouwde culturele verleden een belangrijke rol speelt. BkBeats heeft door de jaren heen een naam opgebouwd. Het is het grootste indoor facultaire festival van Nederland en onder andere The Golden Earring, Hans Dulfer, Racoon en Pete Philly & Perquisite hebben in

het verleden opgetre-den tijdens het festival. Op 23 april barst het festival om 21:00 uur los in BK City. Deze editie zullen onder andere Flinke Namen, Nobody Beats the Drum en Warren Fellow hun opwach-ting maken. (MS)

Maputo zorgt voor een besef van wederzijdse cultuur, die des te complexer werd met de komst van de moderne beweging. Daarnaast drukt de recente globalisering een stempel op de architectuur in de vorm van contextloze, inwisselbare hoogbouw, maar tegelijkertijd groeit de

aandacht voor duurzame ontwikkeling.

De conferentie is de opmaat voor een ontwerp-project in Delft en Maputo dat komend jaar aangeboden zal worden in de afstudeerfase; een interdisciplinair project waaraan studen-ten van alle afdelingen van BK kunnen deelnemen. De internationale samenwerking en begeleiding alsmede het integrale karakter van het ontwerpteam beloven dit afstudeer-project tot een bijzondere ervaring te maken.

Delft – “The difference is that in London we started with a more general discussion, questioning what critique actually is. The coming symposium in Delft focuses on a small aspect of this discussion: what can the relation-ship be between architectural design and architectural criti-cism?” according to architect and writer Christoph Grafe, who will moderate the ensuing discussion.

Designers and writers have historically shared similar impulses when engaging with buildings and cities. Yet the two practices of design and writing have their own modes of opera-tion and preoccupations. Grafe sets an example: “Architects have the responsibility to legiti-mize their choices and designs towards society, writers don’t

have such responsibilities.” This symposium examines the often complicated but necessary relationship between architects, critics and their audiences and the relationship between the practices of criticism and those of architectural design.

Throughout the twentieth century modern architectural criticism and theory defined themselves through their proximity to particular design practices and agendas, as exemplified by writers like Sigfried Giedion, Nikolaus Pevsner, Reyner Banham

This symposium intends to examine the space for architec-tural criticism between an architectural practice that in europe has increasingly adopted a pragmatic attitude towards its own modes of operation (and its history) and theory. Theory proposes itself as a critical court of appeal, but tacitly accepts the separation of making architecture from thinking about it (if not explicitly sanctioning architec-tural practice). (MK)

leren Ontwerpen! Een student vertelde mij dat hij zich verbaasde over de voldoende die hij kreeg voor zijn ontwerp. Ik snap er niets van, waren zijn woorden. Dat is niet best! Dit alles heeft te maken met de verkeerde manier waarop je les krijgt. Al een aantal jaren krijg ik wekelijks pia-noles. Mijn pianolerares kan goed uitleggen wat ik goed en fout doe.

Zo laat ze me zien en horen dat ik te veel met mijn vingers speel en te weinig met mijn hand en arm. Je aanslag wordt bepaald door het gewicht van je arm. Als ze me een cijfer zou geven dan zou dat cijfer voor mij volstrekt in lijn liggen van haar begeleiding en beoordeling. Natuurlijk is het lesgeven in ontwerpen iets heel anders, maar op het punt van conse-quentie vergelijkbaar; begelei-ding, beoordeling en eindcijfer moeten eenduidig zijn, anders kun je het wel schudden.

Ontwerpen is in de eerste plaats een vaardigheid. Tijdens het ontwerpen moet je rekening houden met veel verschillende zaken. Een ontwerp is een antwoord op een complexe vraag. Allereerst moet een ontwerp oogstrelend zijn, ruimtelijk spannend, functioneel en tegelijk technisch vernuftig. Ga er maar aan staan, je kunt het alleen methodisch doen. Daar moet het leren ontwerpen op gericht zijn.

Mijn pianolerares leert mij weinig over muziek: dat moet ik zelf ontdekken. Ze leert mij des te meer over de methodiek van pianospelen. Zo ook het leren ontwerpen. De manier waarop je het aanpakt moet je leren, schoonheid en vernuft ontdek je zelf!

Delft – The eAAe or european Association of Architecture education is an international non-profit association based in Belgium committed to the exchange of ideas and people within the field of architecture education and research. Towards its goal of improving the know-ledge base and quality of archi-tecture and urban design educa-tion, the Association publishes a guide of its member schools. Though by far not an exhaustive overview of schools in europe, the eAAe Guide is one of the few sources where general informa-tion can be found on many european architecture schools and what they offer. The colloquia offer insight into state of the art research, lively discussions and a good amount of critique, which is valuable to speaker and public, staff and students. This is now the 5th edition and there is no doubt a full palette of interesting subjects will be presented.

The following PhD's will present their research:Hans Teerds will start the day. The notion of public realm is one of the main themes in architec-tural and urban discourse. Philosopher Hannah Arendt introduced this notion, albeit in the political and philosophical discourse. Teerds re-reads her work and arguments in the architectural context and con-fronts them with contemporary developments in the city.

Willemijn Wilms Floet analyses the history of the Dutch ‘hof’ (courtyard), a spatial type which developed between the 12th and 19th century in the context of the walled city. Still, after the disman-tling of the cities walls, this building type was re-interpreted

and adapted by several generations of builders and architects ever since. Wilms Floet’s research aims to demonstrate how and why

this typology is used again and again and rewritten in

relation to contemporary design questions.

Nelson Mota aims to clarify the reasons why the post-war architectural avant-garde used vernacular architecture as a reference to unify the critical approach to Modernist principles and its consequences to housing design. Mota will use the Portuguese architectural discourse and housing design from the end of World War II until the 1970s to demonstrate how the peripheral context of Portugal and the Mediterranean were both influenced by the avant-garde and an influence to the post-war revision of Modernist principles.Mark Pimlott revisits the very large controlled public interior – see his publication ‘Without and Within: Essays on Territory and the Interior’ (Rotterdam, 2007)- and wonders how the develop-ment of this type – best repre-sented by the shopping mall, the casino and the urban atrium – is linked with historical develop-ments of the American territory and cities in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries? Mark Schoonderbeek, the last speaker of the day, explores the technique of mapping. How can it fabricate small scale-readings of urban conditions and subsequent-ly be used as a tool for architec-tural design interventions? (MK)

“De Real Estate Career Day is geschikt voor alle geïnteres-seerde vastgoed gerelateerde HBO en WO studenten die zich in de laatste jaren van hun studie bevinden,” aldus voorzitter van de organisatie Maarten Matze.

Om dit extra kracht bij te zetten is dan ook gekozen voor een nieuwe naam: de Real Estate Career Day. De organisa-tie wil een bredere groep studenten aanspreken. Niet alleen studenten uit Delft, maar studenten uit het gehele land moeten naar de bedrijvendag afreizen. In de toekomst wil de bedrijvendag zich ook steeds meer op internationale studenten en bedrijven gaan focussen.“De Real Estate Career Day onderscheidt zich van de BOSS Bedrijvendag door het aantrekken van een bredere groep vastgoed-studenten van verschillende universiteiten, en de zoektocht naar de perfecte match tussen bedrijf en student,” aldus Matze. Op de dag zullen 250 studenten aanwezig zijn en ongeveer 25 bedrijven. De bedrijven lopen uiteen van projectontwikkelaars tot adviseurs, van beleggers tot woningcorporaties.

Bedrijven uit de vastgoed wereld zijn over het algemeen hard getroffen door de financiële crisis en de recessie. Veel bedrijven hebben hun personeelsbestand ingekrompen om de crisis te overleven. Na elke recessie trekt de markt echter weer aan en ontstaat een periode van groei, waarin bedrijven weer werknemers aannemen.De arbeidsmarkt voor afgestudeerden op het gebied van vastgoed is op dit moment zeer slecht. Voor 2008 had elke Real Estate & Housing afstudeerder van de TU Delft binnen 3 maanden een baan, dit is momenteel zeker niet het geval. De verwachting is echter wel dat binnen 1 tot 2 jaar de markt weer aantrekt en bedrijven weer op zoek gaan naar personeel.De Real Estate Career Day anticipeert op deze tendens, het is van belang dat huidige masterstudenten van alle vastgoedgerelateerde studies in Nederland nu al in contact komen met bedrijven die in vroegtijdig sta-dium anticiperen op de aantrekkende markt.

Het programma zal zich enerzijds richten op oriëntatie, anderzijds zal het programma de juiste studenten en bedrijven aan elkaar koppelen. Bedrijven zullen hierdoor de interessante studenten ontmoeten, terwijl studenten de bedrijven naar hun interesse ontmoeten. (MK)

Het centrale thema vormt de samenhang tussen architectonisch en bouwtechnisch ontwerpen, waarbij de relatie tussen concept en detail van essentieel belang is. Architectuur geïnspireerd door materiaal, klimaat en constructie als verrijking van de architectuur.

mEYEmedia&IDoor MediaStudies en Informatica. De mediavaardigheden (handtekenen, maquettes, computervisualisatie) worden behandeld. Studenten worden gestimuleerd om hiermee creatieve combinaties te maken, met als doel zijn of haar ideeën op een creatieve manier te kunnen communiceren.

In deze Minor doe je kennis op over het materieel erfgoed in Nederland en de manier waarop historici en ontwerpers daarmee omgaan. Centraal staat kennisneming van en oefenen met begrippen als historische identiteit, waardestelling en ruimtelijke interventie bij objecten en structuren van cultureel erfgoed in een historische omgeving.

Sociaal-duurzame wijk: Transitiestrategieën voor probleemwijkenDoor de Veldacademie. Centraal staat de sociaal-fysieke invalshoek, d.i. de wederkerige relatie tussen maatschappij en ruimte, binnen de probleemwijken-problematiek. Kernbegrippen zijn leefbaarheid, (sociale) duurzaamheid, en het ontwerpen en (aan)sturen van sociaal-fysieke transitie- en transformatieprocessen.

The Beauty of ThingsDoor Interior in samenwerking met Landschap. In deze Minor wordt een openbaar gebouw met een aantal sociaal-culturele functies onder één dak ontworpen. De aandacht binnen dit project is gericht op het ontwerpen vanuit de beleving van de gebruiker.

Stedenbouw in de DeltaDoor Urbanism in samenwerking met Civiele Techniek. Je verkrijgt bredere stedenbouwkundige kennis en ontwerpvaardigheden in relatie tot de actuele waterproblematiek.

LandschapsarchitectuurDoor Landschapsarchitectuur. Het thema van dit project is het ontdekken van het stedelijk landschap als architectonisch vraagstuk op verschillende schalen. De creatieve samenhang tussen architectuur en landschap en tussen landschap en stad wordt blootgelegd in het ontwerp van een tuin, een park en een polder.

ImaginationDoor TO&I. Het doel van deze Minor is dat studenten een ontwerp of onderzoek verbeelden met behulp van handtekenen, film en computervisualisatie. Dit resulteert in een animatiefilm van 90 seconden.

Interactive EnvironmentsDoor Hyperbody in samenwerking met IO. Centraal staat de interactie van meerdere gebruikers met slimme ruimtelijke omgevingen. Een interactieve sociale ruimte wordt ontworpen waarin autonoom opererende, intelligente bouwcomponenten zijn opgenomen.

Retail DesignDoor Interior in samenwerking met IO. Het onderwerp is het ontwerpen van een kleine winkel voor een hedendaags product met een passende doelgroep. Het ontwerp wordt doorontwikkeld van concept tot de uitwerking van kleinschalige details.

Andere minorsNaast de hier genoemde minors kan ook gekozen worden voor een stageminor en een vrije minor (een minor aangeboden door een andere faculteit op de TU Delft).

On 22 April, the next Master Event will take place at bouwkunde. During the meeting, a clearer overview of what the different tracks and studios have to offer is provided for students who have not yet chosen which Master programme they wish to participate in.

Op maandag 19 april presenteren de elf verschillende bSc-5 Minorprogramma’s die bouwkun-de aanbiedt zich tijdens een speciale bK-minorvoorlichting. Studenten die zich deze periode inschrijven voor bSc-5 doen er goed aan deze voorlichting bij te wonen: alle bK-specifieke Minors worden dan gepresenteerd.

Maandag 26 april vindt een tweede Minorvoorlichting plaats, maar dan TU-breed: alle facultei-ten presenteren in de Aula de Minors die zij aanbieden, zodat studenten van zowel binnen als buiten de faculteit een volledig overzicht verkrijgen van het Minoraanbod op de TU Delft.

Hiernaast zijn de elf Minors die bouwkunde aanbiedt kort weergegeven. Uit ervaring blijkt dat de bK-Minors wel erg populair zijn: zorg dus dat je er bij de inschrijving snel bij bent!

Clemens M. steenbergen (1946) is a landscape architect, and since 1993 a professor of Landscape Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture TU Delft. He is an author of international books, including Italian Villas and Gardens (1992), Architectural Design and Composition (2000), Architecture and Landscape (2003), Sea of Land (2005), Composing Landscapes (2008) and The Polderatlas of the Netherlands (2009). Many of his other book, publications, design studies and exhibitions have involved the theory of research by design, the architecture of the Dutch country house, and the transfor-mation of the Dutch water, polder and urban landscape.

NEW MASTER TRACK: LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Starting September 2010, a new Master course in Landscape Architecture will be offered to students. Wasn't Landscape Architecture a part of the Urbanism department until now? Clemens Steenbergen: yes, but with the new master course and graduation studios, Landscape Architecture will become an independent entity that is fundamentally different from Urbanism. We like to look at the city not in the first place as a brief, or a combination of social and societal demands that we need to respond to by design. instead we look at a city as a landscape. Looking at a city as a landscape also means knowing what landscape is. Just look at the enormous sprawl and the sheer size of the city: you can only understand it as a landscape that needs to be analysed and organised. Over the centuries, landscape architects developed very specific tools to deal with this, which is what we’ll be offering to our students.

So Landscape Architecture will no longer be taught at the Urbanism department? CS: Originally, there was an independent department of Landscape Architecture that was somewhere between Architecture and Urbanism. We contributed to both. then, more than 10 years ago, the curriculum was re-organ-ised and we ended up as a part of Urbanism, where we now contribute to the Urbanism graduation track. in our new position as an independent track,

we will still be contributing to Urbanism. in addition we also want to cooperate with Architec-ture, as we did in the past, exploring design items in the field between architecture and landscape as we did in the past, exploring design-items in the field between architecture and landscape.

It seems paradoxical that right in the middle of various budget cuts, there is a new master track on its way. How does this correspond to the faculty’s financial policy? CS: We believe that the dean has made a good decision with the addition of Landscape Architecture. the whole profession (of Landscape Architecture-red.) has grown enormously over the last ten years. Almost all architecture faculties abroad offer a course in it. tU Delft and our faculty are quite well known internationally, and we had many foreign students inquiring about the possibility of graduating in Landscape Architecture. Until now, this option was not avail-able. Financially... let's say we work hard. Although a lot of people say that about themselves, it is actually true for us (laughs). We have quite a limited budget, and a lot of the work is from our own initiative and time. We are very dedicated and enthusiastic, so at this stage, we don’t need an enormous budget…Inge Bobbink: We’ve done business studies and there is a lot of demand for landscape archi-tects, be it in the various branch-es of government, architectural offices and, of course, offices of

landscape architecture. there is a demand in the market and in the field of our profession that is not yet being met, so we believe we have a solid case.

Landscape architects seem to work in many different fields. For example, Adriaan Geuze has designed the Schouwburg-plein (a city square) in Rotterdam and the Borneo-Sporenburg neighbourhood of Amsterdam. Will the new Landscape Architecture track also have this broad orienta-tion? IB: As professor steenber-gen said before, we feel that we are closely related to both Architecture and Urbanism. We need their knowledge, but the landscape architect has a specific set of tools that we use to work with on contemporary urban issues. CS: in order for the track to be certified, certain criteria must be met, so the graduates have the right to use the title of Landscape Architect. We have met these, but the emphasis of our course is different than the landscape course offered at the University of Wageningen. they focus on the landscape as a bio-ecological system. At our faculty we put more emphasis on understanding the landscape as a spatial system, which responds to the program-matic requirements. We are more design- and less system-oriented. IB: Our instructors also come from different disciplines. We have landscape architects, naturally, but also urbanists and architects that currently incorporate landscape architecture in their work. We believe that a good

NEW MASTER TRACK: LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Isn’t there a possibility that what you’ll be teaching is perhaps too specialized and applicable only in the ‘polder’? CS: We have worked within the european masters of Urbanism (emU) programme and we offer a semester called ‘Hybrid Land-scapes’. the design task of this semester focuses on the ronde Venen, a typical polder. many foreign students consider this man-made landscape fascinating. When you show brazilian students for example the way you can consider and analyse a landscape they are very sur-prised. in the Netherlands, we’ve made our landscape and we understand it, which means we can easily design for it. the Dutch landscape is a learning case and an experiment for these students. then they can look at their own landscape in a different way. We do focus on Dutch landscape very intensively for half a semester, but we also have courses, which examine the relationship between architecture and landscape and between landscape and the city in an international context.IB: perhaps the Dutch students can sometimes become so used to the landscape, that they lose interest in it. but the Dutch landscape has a strong architec-tural quality that is well worth studying. it’s unique and at the same time it provides a very explicit and general study object for landscape architects.CS: Over the years we have acquired extensive knowledge of landscapes, how to analyse and design them. books like Compos-ing Landscapes, that look at landscape analysis and presenta-tion, are internationally well received as they offer our differ-ent insight. When architecture schools in the Us like mit put your books on display, you like to believe that you’ve made a real contribution.

CS: We actually have many professors at the faculty who are not directly linked to the Chair of Landscape Architec-ture, though they are in fact landscape architects. they will also contribute to the master track. Dirk sijmons, for example, who holds the Chair of environ-mental Design, and eric Luiten who holds the belvedère Chair, which is about history of places. they are both landscape architects with extensive experience who will be contrib-uting to the new master track. Furthermore, we will be working with guest instructors and with Architecture and Urbanism instructors from our own faculty.

Will the Bachelor students from Delft have enough prior knowledge to do the master track, provided that the

course, especially now that we know that the Landscape Archi-tecture master track is about to be launched. We hope that this minor will prepare the students for the master course. the students responded quite well to the broad knowledge they acquired, from botanical knowl-edge to designing with different landscapes. We recommend that students who wish to do the master track with us take this minor, so they can get a feeling of what Landscape Architecture is about.CS: the minor Landscape Architecture offers a very broad cross section of our field. We work and design on very different scales, from the building and interior scale, to the scale of the city landscape. From hearth to horizon.

The Dutch landscape is very different from other global landscapes and very specific.

subject matter is not explicitly present in the current curricu-lum? IB: We are involved in the curriculum of bsc-1, bsc-3 and bsc-6, and we also have our own minor (bsc-5 - red.). We feel that we could do more, but we will first start the master track and from there we will implement the required changes that need to be made in our contribution to the bachelor courses.CS: Although our contribution to the bachelor curriculum is now small, we believe it is enough for the students to be able to complete our master course successfully because they have very good design and process skills.

You also mentioned the Minor Landscape Architecture. Are you planning to continue with it and what were your experi-ences? What was the response of the students and instruc-tors? IB: We have revised the

Stylosstylos is the student association for the Faculty of architecture and has been around for more than a hundred years, as can be seen in the number of student boards that have been seated (this year’s is number 114). in con-trast with the practical associati-ons, stylos does not concentrate on a specific degree programme or group within the faculty but rather represents the general interests of all bouwkunde students. The activities that are organized are many and diverse but perhaps more important is the fact that stylos is the central student hub at the faculty.info@stylos.nl

Student Council (FSR)The student Council or Facultair studentenraad (FsR) is probably one of the most important groups representing students. Student Practice Associations (Praktijkverenigingen)These student associations have been set up to improve ties with the specialized disciplines in the work field and were set up in the

late 1980’s/early 1990’s. There are currently five practice associa-tions in total which were origi-nally linked to the five main degree programmes offered at the faculty at the time. as their accent lies on the link with the professional world, they focus chiefly on the Master phase.

Argusargus is the student association for architecture. argus has had an unsteady history at the Faculty. This has to do with a number of factors, mainly due to the overlap with stylos which also offers many activities related to architecture. anno 2010 a new student board is forming and the association is slowly but surely coming back to life. in the coming months, the new argus board will brainstorm with stylos and the architecture Department to determine how it can strengthen the ties between students and the architecture profession.argus-bk@tudelft.nl

Door roemer warners

Tussen Delft en Den Haag ligt sinds 2002 de splinternieuwe Vinex-wijk Ypenburg. Ypenburg is gebouwd op het oude vliegveld Ypenburg en op een grootdeel van het grondgebied van Nootdorp. Acht jaar na de bouwstart zijn nu bijna alle projecten opgeleverd en is een groot deel verhuurd of verkocht. De wijk heeft met 40.000 inwoners twee nieuwe winkelcentra, Ypenbrug (Rapp+Rapp, 2005) en Nootdorp (Sjoerd Soeters, 2003). De twee centra liggen twee tramhaltes bij elkaar vandaan, zijn ongeveer even oud, hebben ongeveer hetzelfde winkelaanbod en zijn ongeveer even goed bereikbaar. In plaats van dat de beide centra ongeveer evenveel bezoekers zouden trekken, staat Ypenburg voor 20% leeg en is Nootdorp een groot succes. Waar heeft dit mee te maken? Komt dit enkel omdat je in Nootdorp gratis kan parkeren of zijn er wellicht nog andere factoren die het succes van een winkelcentrum verklaren?Om hier inzicht in te krijgen moet onderzocht worden waarop de consument de keuze voor een winkelcentrum baseert. Bij het ontwerpen van winkelcentra in Nederland beweren architecten en ontwikkelaars dat ze ontwerpen vanuit de voorkeuren van de consument. Het vertalen van deze voorkeuren zou de sleutel tot succes moeten zijn. Dit klink allemaal heel logisch, maar als de klant altijd koning is, waarom hebben we in Nederland dan zoveel ‘Ypenburgen’?

Het hoofddoel van mijn onderzoek is inzicht krijgen in waarom een persoon kiest voor een bepaald winkelcentrum. Deze keuze wordt bepaald door een combinatie van ratio en emotie. Zo is deze keuze een combinatie van harde aspecten (aanbod, parkeren, reistijd, bereikbaarheid) en zachte aspecten (atmosfeer, routing, architectuur). Het is echter moeilijk om met name de emotionele aspecten te meten.

Om een uitspraak te kunnen doen over zowel de harde als de zachte aspecten ben ik samen met Clarine van Oel en Dion Kooijman bezig met het optimaliseren van een relatief nieuwe onderzoeksmethode: de vignettenmethode. Het gaat hierbij om een speciale manier van enquêteren. Deze internetenquête bestaat uit twee delen. De respondent moet na het invullen van een aantal persoonlijk aspecten in het tweede deel steeds kiezen tussen twee opties (een set van twee vignetten). In elke van de twee opties zijn een aantal kenmerken verwerkt waardoor de respondent indirect zijn of haar keuze laat bepalen. Deze vorm van enquêteren heeft een aantal voordelen ten opzichte van normale vragen-lijsten. Er wordt gewerkt met plaatjes waardoor het voor respondenten duidelijker is wat er precies gevraagd wordt. Een ander voordeel is dat de respondent niet weet waar je als onderzoeker naar op zoek bent en daarom is het minder makke-lijk om strategisch te antwoorden. Door de respondent te laten kiezen, wordt realistischer onderzocht waar de respondenten in het echt ook voor zouden kiezen. Tot slot is de enquête laagdrempeliger dan de bekende vragenlijsten.

Petition to the Management Team of the Faculty of Architecture

Can we help you?

During the past year, communica-tion between the Management Team and the faculty community has worsened. Even the dean has admitted it. So we have to do something about it.

The Management Team informing the faculty community by more adequately will do only half the job. The faculty also must be enabled to address the Manage-ment Team.

Years ago, democracy was abolished in our faculty. Strangely enough, today the administration of ‘BK City’ can only be addressed by a petition – a genre that belongs to a feudal past.

Our faculty harbours ca. 4,000 grown-up, intelligent and committed people: an enormous human capital of expertise, creativity and energy. If this is not used, loyalty will turn into passivity, cynicism or worse.

Now that the faculty is in trouble, we, the signatories of this petition, will offer our help. We want to liberate the Management Team from its autism and lure it out of the back rooms in which it tries to solve capacity and financial problems for us.

In these bad times we refuse to submit ourselves to a restrictive top-down regime. Also we refuse to be passively played off against one another.

We want the spirit of May 14, 2008 back, the day after the fire.

Can we help the Management Team? We believe we can. We ask you to adopt five simple measu-res. They can be implemented immediately with no or minimal costs.

Petition to the Management Team

1. The Management Team publishes a short but well-reasoned list of its decisions on the faculty website, as soon as they are taken.

2. The Management Team publishes key information about personnel and financial matters on the faculty website and updates this information regularly. By key information we mean: the number of permanent and temporary staff and guest teachers, the distribution plan of vacant Chairs, the composition of selection advisory commit-

tees, faculty budget, annual accounts and financial prospects for the near future.

3. The Management Team guarantees freedom of speech within the faculty building and its electronic networks, in accordance with article 7 of the Dutch constitution. This implies the free delivery of speeches, the dissemination of pamphlets and the organization of public meetings.

4. Every year, in September, the dean delivers a ‘state of the faculty’ speech. In it, he deals with the current situation, the problems and opportunities, a long term perspective and the main intended policy measures.

5. After the ‘state of the faculty’ speech – and as often as a substantial part of the faculty feels the urgency to do so – a public meeting will be organized open to all members of the faculty community. It will be led by a competent, external chairman. Modelled after the example of the ‘town hall meetings’ in the United States of America, these meetings will enable the faculty to hold the Management Team accountable, to express criticism and to put forward policy suggestions.

ZondagGraag zou ik willen weten hoe

mijn collega’s de zondag doorbrengen. De zondag, gestigmatiseerd als de dag waarop God rustte en terugkeek op zijn onwerkelijke inspanning om in zes dagen de complete aarde te creëren: “En God zag dat het goed was”. Volgens de Tien Geboden mag er op de zondag dan ook niet gewerkt worden.

Bij mijn ouders werd er op zondag naar de radio geluisterd. De enige radio, in de huiskamer. Met ons zessen zaten we dan in pyjama klaar om het begin van Für Elise niet te missen. Dit programma over klassieke muziek werd rechtstreeks vanuit de Spiegelzaal van het Concertgebouw uitgezonden en begon steevast met een vrije interpretatie van het beruchte Albumblatt Für Elise van Ludwig van Beethoven door een genode solist of centraal geprogram-meerd ensemble. De gelukzalig-heid van het samenzijn werd gerekt met steeds weer koffie en sigaretten. We rookten allemaal. Daarmee stoppen zou afbreuk hebben gedaan aan ons heilige ritueel. Het verdere verloop van de dag was voor ieder van ons verschillend: ik leed de rest van de dag onder melancholie, mogelijk door het contrast met de ochtend die zich pas over een week weer zou herhalen.

Met mijn eigen gezin ging het iets anders. Ruim op tijd voor de kinderprogrammering van de VPRO kropen de kinderen bij ons in bed om televisie te kijken. Een lange sessie tussen de beschuit-kruimels. Ik leed, ondanks het familiegeluk, nog steeds onder melancholie die nu waarschijnlijk het gevolg was van het besef dat ik per week maar één enkele dag kon ontsnappen aan mijn werk dat, hoewel goed betaald, consequent tot gewetensconflic-ten leidde.

De kinderen zijn het huis uit. Mijn vrouw en ik kijken op de zondagochtend televisie. In de huiskamer. Mijn vrouw gekleed voor de dag, ik in pyjama. Vrije Geluiden, Boeken en soms Buitenhof. Für Elise bestaat nog, heet nu Spiegelzaal, maar is uit de gratie. De melancholie van de namiddag is er niet meer. Ik ben gezegend met mijn werk en om op maandag opgeruimd en goed geluimd te kunnen beginnen, werk ik alvast op zondag. Met koffie en sigaretten. Zondigen heeft een goede uitwerking op mijn geest.

I like the Sugar City Redevelopment by Sjoerd Soeters. I always go by it in the train, so you see the transforma-tion from an ugly concrete silo into something that people can use, something that looks very high tech. I live in Rotterdam, and I also like all the skyscrapers that are being built along the river. It attracts successful young people into the city again and looks great when you drive by on a bike.

I think the Binck in The Hague is a great recent project. It’s a large building near the railway and it now houses different small creative businesses. It is beco-ming lively again. I also like the City Hall in The Hague by Richard Meyer. It forms a connection to the central station and is very important in the city context.

My favourite building is the Rudin house by Herzog & de Meuron in Switzerland. It seems like I could live in there, it’s very “design”, but it looks like a house and it’s very comfortable and I would feel relaxed there. I don’t think architecture is all about construc-tion and technology.

I think that the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. It’s an older building, but it’s very special. I read a lot about it in the last year, and it’s fascinating how Mies van der Rohe realized his philosophy and thoughts in that building. I also liked this house they built from LEGO in Top Gear, and one of the guys lived in it for a week.

I like the Reichstag in Berlin. It has a very totalitarian feel, it’s a very overwhelming building. It leaves an impression. But I’m not a student of Architecture, I just know a few people here, and I like hanging around. It’s nicer than my own faculty.

My favourite architect is Bjarke Ingels. He works in a very rational manner, but his architec-ture is spectacular. He never does anything by accident, he is very consistent in his work. I think one of his best projects are the Mountain Dwellings, and the Danish Pavilion for the Shanghai expo is quite original. It lets people ride a bicycle around a statue of the Little Mermaid. Typically Danish.

Vijf Architecten - Jo Coenen, Michiel Riedijk, Bob van Reeth, Dick van Gameren, en Henk Engel, allen verbonden aan de TU Delft - maakten een ontwerp vanuit de hypothese dat het spoor in de toekomst onder-gronds gebracht gaat worden. De vraag was welke nieuwe programma’s, typologieën en beeldtalen deze vrijkomende gebieden zouden kunnen omvormen tot de centra van de 21ste eeuw?
