LONDON (AP) Bolton mid- fielder Fabrice Muamba was critically ill in a hospi- tal’s heart attack unit on Saturday night after col- lapsing during am FA Cup quarterfinal at Tottenham. Muamba fell face-down to the field near the midfield line without any players near him. Medics rushed onto the field with a defibrillator and treated the 23-year-old, pumping his chest for around six minutes of treat- ment before he was rushed to hospital. “Fabrice Muamba has been admitted to the heart attack center at London Chest Hospital where he is currently in a critically ill condition in intensive care,” Bolton said in a statement about three hours later. “No further information will be issued at this stage. The club has requested the me- dia to respect his family’s privacy at this time.” When Muamba collapsed in the 41st minute, Bolton manager Owen Coyle shouted from the sideline: “He’s just collapsed.” Tottenham players William Gallas and Louis Saha along with referee Howard Webb immediately called for medical support as the game was stopped and live television coverage turned away from Muamba. Some distressed players appeared to be praying and tearful as fans chanted Muamba’s name between periods of complete silence at White Hart Lane. Muamba was carried off on a stretcher with an oxy- gen mask and with his chest still being pumped as the crowd applauded. All the players also left the field before Webb abandoned the match. Coyle and forward Kevin Davies accompanied Muamba to a hospital, while the rest of the Bolton team returned to northwest England by train. Former Arsenal team- mate Johan Djourou wrote on Twitter that he had visit- ed Muamba on Saturday night. “Just left the hospital,” he said. “Love you so much man! Keep fighting. Every- body please pray for him he’s an amazing man and friend.” Tottenham striker Jer- main Defoe, who played in Saturday’s match, tweeted: “God willing he will pull through.” Muamba’s Bolton team- mate Stuart Holden, who was watching the game on television, tweeted: “Pray- ing for you Fab.” “The guy is a fighter on and off the field. We love you bro,” he added. “Wait- ing anxiously for updates from teammates.” BASKETBALL NCAA Tournament F I R S T R O U N D A t U D A r e n a D a y t o n , O h i o T u e s d a y , M a r c h 1 3 Western Kentucky 59, MVSU 58 BYU 78, Iona 72 W e d n e s d a y , M a r c h 1 4 Vermont 71, Lamar 59 South Florida 65, California 54 E A S T R E G I O N A L S e c o n d R o u n d T h u r s d a y , M a r c h 1 5 A t T h e C O N S O L E n e r g y C e n t e r P i t t s b u r g h Kansas State 70, Southern Mississippi 64 Syracuse 72, UNC Asheville 65 Gonzaga 77, West Virginia 54 Ohio State 78, Loyola (Md.) 59 A t T h e P i t A l b u q u e r q u e , N . Bolton announced that Muamba is crit- ically ill. CHRIS O'MEARA / AP Jim Furyk lines a putt on the 16th hole during the third round of the Transitions golf tournament Saturday in Palm Harbor, Fla. Furyk ties with Goosen at Transitions PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) Retief Goosen was about ready to give up. His lower back was in so much pain that he decided to withdraw next week from Bay Hill so he could get treatment. A double bogey late in his round knocked him nine spots down the leaderboard, which he figured was the end of his hopes to get in- to the Masters. One day later, every- thing changed. Goosen ran off three straight birdies on the back nine and closed with a tough par from the fair- way bunker on the 18th hole Saturday for a 6-un- der 65 that put him atop the leaderboard with Jim Furyk in the Transitions Championship. Goosen is No. 52 in the world ranking, and he has to be in the top 50 after next week to avoid miss- ing Augusta National — along with St. Andrews, his favorite course — for the first time since 1999. Or he can avoid the math and just win the tourna- ment, which comes with an automatic invitation. Those prospects looked dim when he decided Fri- day to pull out of Bay Hill, and arranged for a protein injection in Virginia on Wednesday. Suddenly, the final round is packed with significance. “Maybe I’m fighting for that last spot in Augusta,” he said. Either way, it figures to be quite a battle. Furyk, determined to overcome an atrocious season in 2011, surged into the lead with a 6-iron that covered the flag on the par-3 15th hole and settled 3 feet away for a birdie. He fell back into a tie on the 18th hole with a three-putt bogey up a steep ridge. That gave him a 66. Furyk and Goosen, for- mer U.S. Open champions who have won before at Innisbrook, were at 11-un- der 202. “I made some birdies out of the rough today, and was able to knock some putts in and keep the round going,” Furyk said. “I played very pa- tient, and when I strug- gled — no putts were go- ing in — I didn’t let it bother me.” Furyk was tied for the lead with Sang-moon Bae, the South Korean rookie who lost in the quarterfi- nals of the Match Play Championship to Rory McIlroy. Bae escaped with a par on the par-5 14th after his 3-wood found the water by making an 18-foot putt. He wasn’t so fortunate on the 16th, however. He drove left into the trees to pro- tect against water run- ning down the right side of the hole. He pitched out to the fairway into the rough, flew the green and three-putted for a triple bogey. He had at least made birdie on the 17th, and wound up with a 68. Bae was one shot be- hind, along with Jason Dufner, who struggled to a 71 and hopes is worst round is out of the way as he tries to win for the first time on the PGA Tour.

Jim Furyk lines a putt on the 16th hole during the thirdround of the Transitions golf tournament Saturday inPalm Harbor, Fla.

Furyk tieswith Goosenat Transitions

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP)Retief Goosen was aboutready to give up. His lower back was in so

much pain that he decidedto withdraw next weekfrom Bay Hill so he couldget treatment. A doublebogey late in his roundknocked him nine spotsdown the leaderboard, which he figured was theend of his hopes to get in-to the Masters. One day later, every-

thing changed. Goosen ran off three

straight birdies on theback nine and closed witha tough par from the fair-way bunker on the 18thhole Saturday for a 6-un-der 65 that put him atopthe leaderboard with JimFuryk in the TransitionsChampionship. Goosen is No. 52 in the

world ranking, and he hasto be in the top 50 afternext week to avoid miss-ing Augusta National —along with St. Andrews, his favorite course — forthe first time since 1999. Or he can avoid the math

and just win the tourna-ment, which comes with anautomatic invitation. Those prospects looked

dim when he decided Fri-day to pull out of Bay Hill, and arranged for a proteininjection in Virginia onWednesday. Suddenly, thefinal round is packed withsignificance. “Maybe I’m fighting for

that last spot in Augusta,”he said. Either way, it figures to

be quite a battle. Furyk, determined to

overcome an atrociousseason in 2011, surged into

the lead with a 6-iron thatcovered the flag on thepar-3 15th hole and settled3 feet away for a birdie. Hefell back into a tie on the18th hole with a three-puttbogey up a steep ridge. That gave him a 66. Furyk and Goosen, for-

mer U.S. Open championswho have won before atInnisbrook, were at 11-un-der 202. “I made some birdies

out of the rough today, and was able to knocksome putts in and keepthe round going,” Furyksaid. “I played very pa-tient, and when I strug-gled — no putts were go-ing in — I didn’t let itbother me.” Furyk was tied for the

lead with Sang-moon Bae,the South Korean rookiewho lost in the quarterfi-nals of the Match PlayChampionship to RoryMcIlroy. Bae escaped with a par

on the par-5 14th after his3-wood found the water bymaking an 18-foot putt. Hewasn’t so fortunate on the16th, however. He droveleft into the trees to pro-tect against water run-ning down the right sideof the hole. He pitched outto the fairway into therough, flew the green andthree-putted for a triplebogey. He had at least made

birdie on the 17th, andwound up with a 68. Bae was one shot be-

hind, along with JasonDufner, who struggled to a71 and hopes is worstround is out of the way ashe tries to win for the firsttime on the PGA Tour.
