If it isn't blatantly obvious by the construction workers on campus, muddy sidewalks, and random drill-ing noises, the campus is indeed not finished. Now, before you get upset about this dreaded news, let’s take a moment and consider all the great things we get to experience while awaiting our brand new school.

Ninety percent of students and faculty surveyed believe that the new CHS will NOT be finshed by the bew deadline. I know this news might put a damper on your day, but won’t the finished product

be worth it?!

The students and some faculty at CHS get the pleasure of using portable classrooms, while I haven’t recieved this distict honor for my-self, I just know what a joy it would be to walk from the band room to J building on a rainy day with no awning.

Sometimes, if we’re lucky, the drill orchestra will visit us outside our classromm and serenade us with song.

I don’t know about you all, but I always enjoy a good sniff of muddy groud water in the morning, and all you have to do is walk by the lunch-room to get a good whiff!

Lastly, the hilight of my Wednesdays is always going to old gym for assemblies. Cramming 1,000 peo-ple into a small space with no air condition-ing is a great idea.

We recently surveyed fifty seniors, along with Coach Barnet and Mrs. Burroughs who were eager to give their input, to see if they though the new school would be finished by the deadline - November 3rd.

Hilight How-To’sHow to stay organized this school year

Always make sure you have your basic supplies, which includes: pencils, pens, folders, notebooks, and paper. If you aren’t sure what to bring, having paper and a pencil is always a good idea.

Having pockets and sections in a binder or notebook will make things much more organized. This can also help you to keep up with certain assignments from different classes, if you keep them separated.

Make sure that you have the correct size lead for all your mechanical pencils. If you don’t use mechanical pencils and prefer the standard #2 pencil, it wouldn’t hurt to bring a small portable pencil sharpener.

Since we have days for even classes, and days for odd class-es, it would make more sense to put even classes in one binder and odd classes in the other. By doing this, you will not have to bring your whole entire backpack on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

It’s easy for the inside of your bind-ers or backpack to get cluttered with paper so to keep things nice and neat, it wouldn’t hurt to clean those places out ever few weeks. This will make it much easier so you don’t have to go through so many papers at one time.

Keeping a Daily Planner helps tremendously: why worry about missing a homework assignment or turning something in late when you could write it down so you will never forget?

On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown, an 18-year-old, black resident from the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson was shot and killed by a white, county police officer. He was unarmed and then left uncovered in the street in broad daylight. The rioting and anarchy in Ferguson rang through the streets for the better part of the month. Although the situation has now simmered to synergy, another outburst of violence could ignite at any time. Volleyball Football

Cross-Country Swim and Dive

Cullman High School’s volleyball program has been preparing for its first season of 6A volleyball. The volleyball program kicked off their summer on June 10th with their first ever Cullman Bearcat Volleyball Clinic. This was a fun way for for the players to get to know each other as well as the future faces of the volleyball program. Starting June 17th the Lady Bearcats began their pre-season with their first of a total of 18 summer workouts and about 12 practices. In addition to the workouts and practices, the volleyball teams participated in Auburn’s volleyball team camp July 11-13. When asked about her experience at Auburn’s team camp, senior Allie Gipson said she felt like it was a good mixture of team bonding, individual skills, and team instruction. The volleyball team may not have gotten the most relaxing summer, but they did put in the work needed to conquer area rivals Hartselle, Decatur, and Austin. Please come out and support the Cullman volleyball team at their first home game on September 18th against Hartselle!

Being placed in one of the hardest regions in the state for their debut in 6A is nothing but motivation for the Cullman High School football team. In fact, the football team has been putting in long hours in the weight room all summer to prepare for the upcoming season. Starting in June, the Cats began with their 6 A.M. workouts and practices that lasted until about 9 A.M. They also participated in several 7 on 7 events to help point out areas that needed more work before the start of the season. While all of this may seem pretty grueling, you can’t forget about the infamous two-a-days. Two-a-days are known for their long hours and hard hitting. I asked senior Seth Donaldson how he felt about the upcoming season and he said, “Since we are 6A and placed in one of the toughest regions in the state, many people are questioning how are season will go, but I think we will surprise them all.” There is no doubt that the football team will do just that. They always rise to the occasion and do what is necessary to continue the winning tradition at CHS.

The Cullman cross country team has been working extremely hard this summer in order to excel this season. Runners have trained at many camps throughout the summer including the A Step Ahead camp held at St. Bernard where they met at 7-9am every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday and ran miles and miles of rigorous terrain. Several experienced coaches and runners came to speak and gave nutritional and personal guidance. The annual team camp was held at the Doublehead Resort in Moulton, Alabama. Our runners and coaches made it to the camp around 3pm, settled in the cabins, and then met to run at 5pm. The next two days the team ran at 7-9am. They had free time, which mainly included hammoking and watching crimi-nal minds together, until their next run at 5pm. Mrs. Coach Barnett and Mrs. Allison Norris cooked excellent meals for our runners. The last night of the camp the team gathered after din-ner to talk about their team goals. The Bearcats will be compet-ing in the Chickasaw Trails meet September 6th in Moulton.

The swim team had a stellar season this year. I had the pleasure of interviewing the beautiful Jillian Richard (freshman) so you can have a better idea of the day in the life of a Cullman swim-mer. “We practice during the summer at the aquatic center every morning, five days a week. On Tuesdays we have home meets and Thursdays is away meets. We have a total of about 10 swim meets and then a district swim meet to try and qualify for the state swim at the end of the summer. You can qualify for individual and relay events. This year’s state swim meet was at the new Birmingham cross plex.” The Cullman swim team fin-ished 3rd in the state and had many individual title holders to represent Cullman. The dive team qualified for state this year ans are now State champs! How hard is it to qualify and excel at state? Our very own Anna Evans (freshman) can tell you. “You had to get in the top three to go to state and have certain dives depending on your age group to go to district.” Anna won district and is now a state champion while Anna Trevar-than placed second at state.

“Melt faces and toss babies!” that is the silly, yet traditional motto that the Cullman High school Bearcat Marching Band embraces.

Although they may have their over-the-top humorous moments, when it comes time to playing music, that is when dedication and commitment prevail. To most people, the work behind the half-time show is irrelevant, but this article will explain the logistics and effort that makes up the Cullman High school Marching Band halftime show. The first objective for preparing a new marching show is learning the music. Two months prior to school, the band students recieve

the designated score for the upcoming season. The students begin practicing the new music individually, but as the season approaches,

sectionals are held to work on individual section strength. once the music is learned well enough to play, the sections combine to then focus on the music as an entire ensemble. From the time the music is dispersed, it is each student’s responsibility to try to retain the music from memory.

The first objective for preparing a new marching show is learning the music. Two months prior to school, the band students recieve the designated score for the upcoming season. The

students begin practicing the new music individually, but as the season approaches, sectionals are held to work on individual section strength. once the music is learned well enough to play, the sections combine to then focus on the music as an entire ensemble. From the time the music is dispersed, it is each student’s responsibility to try to retain the music from memory.

The next key in making a superior marching band show is learning to march! In a marching show, each student has a certain individual coordinate that they must meet in a certain amount of beats. Each of these coordinates connects, making different sets of images that give a new layer of life to the music. For the marching show this year (entitled “From the Earth to the Stars Above”) the CHS band plays a total of three scores on the field. Each of these tunes has a specific number of drill to accommodate the music. For example, there are eighteen sets in the first tune “Enterprising Young Men,” eight in the ballad “Journey of Man: Flying,”and a total of 21 in the closing score, “Prince of Thieves.” From July 1, the marching band spends around three to four days a week repeating these various sets with music to commit the routine to memory. The final- and quite possibly most important- factor in creating a remarkable show, is teamwork and

dedication. With a schedule packed full of rehearsals and performances, the 130 students that make up the Cullman Band spend -on average- a total of 228 hours together outside of school. This includes rehearsal hours, football games, parades, and the annual band trip.

Each full ensemble rehearsal lasts around two-to-four hours; during these practices, the band runs the show while isolating parts that need extra attention. Once the band has the show “cleaned” up to the point of performance, each student must get in the mindset of playing the show’s music and drill at once, with pride and dignity. While the band students act as one big family, the stress can sometime get overbearing. Although quarrels may happen, after a great performance, the “family” always reconnects. Tensions can always rise due to the work behind making a great show. The framework behind an award-winning marching show takes effort and perseverance. Everyone must put forth their hard-work, whether it is a freshman playing trombone, a sophomore on the danceline, or a senior playing tenor drums. Learning 40 sets of drill and three songs is challenging, but with some great friends, great instructors, and a great history, the outcome is nothing less than superior.
