What? It’s already a month since we stepped into New Year? Gosh! Is it me or do you also think time is flying?

Our February issue has some really exciting things to watch out for! The weather is slowly changing and so it’s time to tuck the woolies in. We’ve showcased stylish, international and local designers with their Spring-Summer Collections for 2015 (Pg 52).

Though Plus Size Fashion is coming up in a big way, not all markets have accepted it totally. There is a mental block that ‘thin is beautiful’. Mai Al Saudi, Bahrain’s first Plus Size Fashion blogger for women, shares her styling hacks and budget-shopping tips with us in an EXCLUSIVE (Pg 44) .

We can’t get enough of local talent and so have decided to feature one awesome reader every month. In this special feature, we will talk to you about your talents, dreams and how you are making a difference in Bahrain! For more details on this, go to Pg 41.

Speaking of homegrown talent, we talk to an upcoming metal band in the Kingdom about their music and plans in an EXCLUSIVE (Pg 42).

A main highlight, this month, is The Makeover. We’ve come to the end of yet another session! Check Pg 68 to see the final result.

Once again, we’ve explored the island and found interesting spaces you can visit, this month (Pg 24). There are so many new things to look out for as well, so, don’t forget our New in Town section (Pg 18).

Save the date! Our events calendar (Pg 8) lists fun-things-to-do, this month. On that note, we’ve been updating this list on our website, every weekend, in our ‘Weekend Blast of Fun Things-to-do’, so, visit bahrain-confidential.com

Check out COMPETITIONS on Pgs 8 and 64 and write to us. We can’t wait to give-away those prizes and listen to what you have to say!

Malja – A Red Bull Initiative

Bahrain’s first open space creative community is now up

and working! Malja, ‘shelter’ in Arabic is the product of the

growing need for an artistic ,networking hub on the island.

Young and innovative minds can now interact with like-

minded individuals and express their talents in a nurturing

environment.

THE MONTH

INSIDE NOW: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK OF ESSENTIAL NUMBERS

EXCLUSIVE: WHO’S THAT WITH CRISTIANO RONALDO?

reat article about Tails Bahrain! I love animals and admire all those who work towards protecting strays on the island. There have been quite a few cases of animal cruelty, recently, which were exposed in newspapers and

on social media platforms. It’s sad how people can abuse these poor creatures. In my opinion, anyone who does is just the lowest type of bully, I sincerely hope we resolve to do our bit for them, this New Year. Sayed Fawaz, Accountant in Bahrain

G

was happy to find London’s Koshari Street in your January issue. I stay in the UK and was in Bahrain on a festive break. My husband and I love the food there, even the kids are fans. It’s always so fresh and delicious, and the ambience is great too!

Lubna Azeemi, Banker in the UK

Dear Lubna, the images of the food made us salivate so we can only imagine what the real deal would be like! Arabic food is such a win-win because it’s not only tasty but healthy too. Hope you enjoyed your stay in Bahrain!

I

’ve been meaning to colour my hair for a while now. Though, I was apprehensive of the side effects especially hair loss, and confused, thanks to so many opinions my friends gave me. That was until I read the article, ‘New Year, New Hair’ in your January

issue, It brought out the ‘brighter’ side of hair colour and I think I’ll just take the plunge, this year! Kaitlyn, Bahrain

Go for it, Kaitlyn! Nothing like a new look for the New Year!

I

oved the piece on New Year Trends! Some of those things are surely on my wishlist (provided I get a crazy raise or win a lottery!). It’s sad you didn’t include anything that’s trending AND AFFORDABLE for poor souls like me.

Broke-as-a-joke

Dear Broke-as-a-joke, we empathise with you; putting that story together killed us too! But hey! It’s called a ‘wishlist’ for a reason, no? Have a great 2015 and yes, we really hope you win that lottery, this year!

Dear Fawaz, all of us at the Confidential office are animal lovers too. We know the cases you’re talking about, they were appalling! It’s okay if we can’t adopt strays or do much for them but hurting animals is the worst kind of wrong.

Well, you can choose your fillings – different flavours of cake, marshmallows, choco chips, fruit, nutella, chocolate sauce, and what not! When you pour the hot chocolate sauce on the ball, it caves in, revealing all these yummylicious contents and then, pure heaven. All this for under BD5!

alentine’s Day. You either love it, or you loathe it. 14th February is a prominent date for spending money on chocolates, teddy bears, roses, heart-shaped cards – all for that one special person.

Well, what happens if you’re going through a rough patch with the special someone? Or, if you’ve recently broken all ties with him/her?

The point is, just because you’re one-special-personless on the affirmed date of true love and what not, doesn’t mean you have to feel miserable and alone. This here’s called taking the initiative to reform the idea so that you – yes, you! – are in power.

On Saturday, 14th February, you will not wake up with a groan, and wish for the day to be over as quickly as possible. You will not stuff your face with Hershey’s Kisses. And you will most certainly not stay cooped-up at home, all by yourself, wishing you were somebody else – possibly somebody with a higher self-esteem. No. No. No. Instead, you will wake up with a smile – it’s a Saturday, for goodness’ sake, the weekend and that’s something to be happy about!

You will have a nice, healthy breakfast and wear nice clothes – you want to know why? Because you will already have a made plans with your friends to go out, all together. Whether it’s a movie date with your besties, or a shopping spree, you will have fun. And, hey, just for the fun of it; why not buy your own stuffed teddy bear? Call him Bubbles. Bubbles and you will then go out for dinner – I suggest you take your friends along as well – you don’t want to be the crazy person talking to a bear at the restaurant. After all that fun, you will have certainly created good memories, and laughed about the silliest things. And you will have done all of that independently and like the strong person you are. You will not have let a date define you!

It’s not important to find the right person just to show him/her off on Valentine’s Day. Finding the right person is unexpected, and it’s thrilling. You meet someone feel comfortable around them – they make you feel more like yourself than you’ve ever felt before. 14th February isn’t a day to feel awful about being alone, or about rubbing it in people’s faces if you do have a special person standing next to you. It’s a day.

In the week. Of a month. And its value is equal to every other day in the month of February.

Don’t wait for Cupid to shoot an arrow. Just relax and take it slow and easy. Enjoy the day just like any other and don’t let people make you feel lonely.

Whether you’re single or with someone, have a great day and laugh a lot! It’s like my friend once said, “Life is for the LOLs.”

“After all that fun, you will have certainly created good memories, and laughed about the silliest things. And you will have done all of that independently and like the strong person you are. You will not have let a date define you!”

How has your experience at Mövenpick been so far?My experience in Bahrain so far has been extremely positive. Besides feeling very welcome in the hotel, I also feel well received in the country. It is easy to settle into Bahrain and once you start to know people and your way around, it has a cosy feel to it. I have been with Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain since April, and we have been fortunate to run an extremely busy hotel. All our results have been very positive financially and more importantly in the area of guest satisfaction.

interviewBahrain Confidential February 2015

"Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain is the first Green Globe certified five-star hotel in Bahrain"

How would you describe your leadership style?I am a very approachable manager and will offer my support where and when needed. I believe that I am the one providing the tools, environment and training for my teams, so they are able to perform their jobs well in their areas of expertise. I will guide the process but should not be running their departments.

What do you think Bahrain’s hospitality industry needs to further boost tourism?I believe there are huge opportunities when it comes to developing Bahrain’s coastlines. We live on an island with a very limited number of public beaches that are controlled and maintained. Developing the beaches and combining this with the culinary diversity and aspirations in Bahrain could result in some fantastic leisure facilities for both residents and tourists.

Any highlights in 2014 that stood out for you and your team? Our major highlight has been the opening of our beautiful new spa, Rimal Spa. It has always been our wish to have a world-class spa facility added to our property. We are extremely pleased with the way it turned out and the way it has created interest amongst our guests and local residents.

Meanwhile, 2015 is looking fantastic already. We were recently recognised at The International Hotel Awards 2014-2015! We are very pleased to share with our guests that the hotel won the five-star award as ‘‘Best Sustainable Hotel” in two categories – both Bahrain and the Arabia regions.

Any surprises for the New Year?In the second half of the year, we will make some exciting announcements. We will offer some creative packages that will put together hotel facilities and Rimal Spa. We will also create some interesting promotions around our popular brunches, so that our guests get to enjoy added benefits and a different feel every day.

We served two American-themed brunches last year and they were immensely successful. This time, we will offer an Italian-themed brunch on 27 February, with the very talented Chef Stephano from Mövenpick Hotel Ibn Battuta-Dubai. In March, we will fly back Chef Paul from Leon des Bruxelles for our Belgium Mussels Madness week.

Your message to guests as the new GM?Having had enough time now to understand Bahrain and the market we operate in, I would like to keep reminding our guests that we offer a unique product in Bahrain. Ours is a boutique airport hotel that offers resort-like ambiance and facilities, combined with one of the most popular F&B offerings in town.

For more info about the hotel and bookings, call Tel. +973 1746 0000 and for Rimal Spa call Tel. +973 1746 0052

Accolade! Best Sustainable Hotel in ArabiaAs its environmental footprint gets ever lighter, Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain pulled its weight instead at The International Hotel Awards 2014, where it has won the five-star award as ‘Best Sustainable Hotel’ in two categories – for both Bahrain and the Arabia region.

The International Hotel Awards committee and judging panel, chaired by Sir David Michels, describes the winners of these awards as those who have proven they are the best nationally or internationally amongst their peers.

Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain is the first Green Globe certified five-star hotel in Bahrain, which helped in paving the path to winning these awards. The hotel follows pre-established core criteria and guidelines for sustainability that have been adapted regionally.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is a great advocate of green practices. The upscale hospitality company looks forward to continuing its sustainable efforts in protecting the environment and scaling down carbon footprints.

Throughout the Hotel, contemporary local culture is celebrated in a collection of works by Bahraini artists, including a

wonderful series of ceramic tiles depicting the region’s ancient Dilmun Culture by Huda Al Saie.

The CUT Bar & Lounge is another concept at the hotel. Four additional concepts include Bahrain Bay Kitchen, Bay-View Lounge, Vento which means “breeze” in Italian and Azure.

Five Unique Swim ExperiencesFour Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay will offer five swim experiences, Free Form Infinity Pool “Spilling” into

The Spa Spa Director Chandarella Luzon, most recently of the acclaimed Spa at Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai in Thailand, leads a team of internationally-trained therapists who will work their magic in 17 luxuriously-appointed treatment rooms. BIG realsoon!Jenny Thomas interviews

Keep an eye out for Metaholic. They’re going to make

Bahraini band, Metaholic

Page 45: Bahrain Confidential Feb 2015

local talentBahrain Confidential February 2015

Starting with the cliché question, what is Metaholic’s story? We started out back in 2011, as a regular band that performed any style or music genre. It was after a certain cancelled Valentine’s gig at Bahrain Mall, did we realise that we were more of a heavy metal kind of band. We came up with the name, Metaholic, started

to compose and cover music and now here we are. Oh, we also have interesting nicknames like Vampire, Wolf and Bella.

Tell us about the music video, Cremation. Before Cremation, we had the opportunity to produce a music video for a movie, ‘Silveraven’. That became pretty popular and was screened in cinema halls. After the success of that, we were attempting to produce more music videos, which led us to release Cremation, for the OST of Dead Sands.

It was tedious amounts of hard work and with limited help, but it was all worth it. Just maybe, for future reference, we probably might not do videos when it’s 40 degrees outside! Of course, we would not have been able to go through with it if it was not for our friends, Ahmed Al Zayani, Abdulwahab Basil and Hasan Fulath.

Is Rock/ Heavy metal as prominent in Bahrain as the other music genres? We would like it to be. But unfortunately, it is not. It’s too underground. We have people who come from other parts of the Middle East commending us on our music, but in Bahrain it still needs to grow. We aren’t talking just about ourselves; it’s the genre as a whole that needs support. Bahrain is a country with some amazing talents in every field. Hopefully, in the coming years, we can receive more support to live the BIG DREAM.

What has helped you attain a huge fan base? The music videos for two movies did their part in getting our name out there. Also, we did have the privilege (it is something we are proud of) to play under the Ministry of Culture for their event, ‘Bahrain Summer’. We also performed at the BIC for National Day!

If you had to inspire other upcoming musicians, what would you say?We are still going through struggles when it comes to making it BIG, but that just means we have climbed up a couple of steps on that ladder. It’s not an easy road. It’s lot of dedication, hard work and persistence. Do not give up. Work hard for it, find people who motivate you and you will succeed.

I think it’s a rock thing, to dress up in all black. Sitting in front of me are four talented Bahrainis, whom people know better as Bahrain’s famous band, Metaholic. Talking to them has been immensely entertaining. I must say, throughout the interview, this disclaimer was running through my mind,“I vow to not comment or stare at your hair’s success story.”

On a more serious note, Naji Al Moosaawi (bass guitar), Mohammed Bu Idrees Alam (vocalist), Mohammed Hussein (guitar) and Yousif Zarka (drummer) tell us their story and how it is to love heavy metal in this island!

exclusive interviewBahrain Confidential February 2015

Mai Al-Saudi always liked creating looks with clothes, accessories and make-up. Though, she didn’t take it seriously enough to start a blog until a friend suggested she does and that's when people started noticing and liking her style. She was recently signed-up by one of the Kingdom’s most reputed talent management agencies. “It started snowballing from there,” she says.

Plus by Mai focuses on plus-size fashion and budget shopping, for women. “Most women can’t afford designer brands and I don’t want to guilt girls into buying fakes,” says Mai who is currently juggling university and a part time job along with blogging.

I ask Mai if she’s received any criticism for not making an effort to shed the extra pounds. “People say, lose weight so you can wear pretty stuff and I’m like hey, I’m plus-size but I still look pretty! I pull off skinny jeans well. I've been asked if 'I’m sure I want to wear skinny jeans' and I say yes; I do have a belly but am blessed with good legs and so look good in them.”

“My main problem growing up was that all my weight was in my stomach (still is). Though I was just 50 kilos back in the time, I had a belly. In fact, some people actually asked me if I was pregnant! It’s more to do with my body type.” says Mai who feels more confident today than she did when she was ‘skinnier’.

A shopping consultant, Mai has observed that many a time women don’t keep an open mind and are very impatient. “You can’t go to just two shops and start whining,” she says. "Most shops these days offer clothes for pear shaped women. So, those who are thicker in the middle or big busted find it challenging." She advises always keeping a good tailor handy. “Sometimes you may pick a jacket that’s bigger and then alter it.” It took Mai years to find the shops that she is currently comfortable shopping at and she tells me that some of her best picks come from lesser known brands.

We discuss some of Mai's top fashion hacks. “Everyone says black makes them look thin but it makes me look fuller; white helps me better,” she says. She adds a few more to the list: if you have short legs, go for longer pants; if you have a bigger backside, don’t go for pants with pockets; if you have a bigger bust and want to show some skin, show some ankle; accessories make a lot of difference too, just tweek things a little to create different looks. She further stress on how important it is to choose the right inner wear. “It makes a big difference and if you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing, it will show.”

Mai advises against going shopping with someone who is impatient or makes negative comments. “Many a time people succumb to peer pressure when they shop with friends and may end up paying a bomb for something they will hardly use,” she says. So, who is Mai’s shopping partner? “Well, I do my best shopping alone!”

In her message to plus-sized fashionistas, she says, "Shop when you feel and look your best. Put on some make-up, do your hair and shop happy!" I couldn't agree more!

Plus by Mai Bahrain’s first plus-size fashion blogger tells Melissa Nazareth why she can pull off skinny jeans!

Mythos products are available at Ruyan pharmacy outlets across Bahrain.

Lrish American author, Jean Kerr once said, “I'm tired of all this nonsense about beauty being skin deep. That's deep enough. What do you want, an adorable pancreas?” As much as we may discount outer appearance,

there is no denying that it does play a part. It’s less about beauty per se and more about a healthy, nourished happy body.

There are so many products entering and exiting the market every other day, promising glowing and supple skin, long and luscious hair, and what not! It can get tricky as to which products are really 100 per cent natural and which aren’t, especially if you have sensitive skin and hair. Home remedies are a safe option.

Grabbing the spotlight for a while now, the humble, old olive has become a household favourite. The fruit, and its oils and other extracts are easily available at your local supermarket; they also have numerous benefits for skin and hair.• Anti-ageing. Rich in vitamins, minerals, natural fatty

acids, and antioxidants, they prevent skin ageing, onset of wrinkles and fine lines.

• Moisturiser. If you have dry skin, massage olive oil well in your skin – face, scalp, elbows, knees, chapped lips, under eye area etc to lock in the moisture for longer.

• Medicinal. If you have irritated or sunburnt skin, massage olive oil on the affected area. It’s great to lighten stretch marks too.

• Conditioner. Massaging warm olive oil on your scalp helps treat split ends and frizzy hair. Combining it with egg gives volume and shine to your mane.

Mythos – Olive Tree ProductsGreek brand, Lifoplus develops cosmetic products based on the olive tree (oil, extract, leaves, seeds) but also based on a range of additional herbal ingredients of Greek and Mediterranean nature, with the trademarks CleanSkin & Mythos. Its innovative formulae guarantee a range of new generation products for the face, hair, body, hands and feet. The mild formulas don’t use synthetic colours making these products safe for sensitive skin too. Insight – Nourishing Hair TherapyMade from natural ingredients like almond, carrot, linseed, organic oats, lemon and others, Insight’s range of hair care products including shampoos, conditioners, anti-frizz masks and gels promise to nourish your scalp while leaving you with healthy, shiny hair. Insight is a brand for all hair types because of its natural properties. Now, hair-fall, damaged roots and bad hair days are a thing of the past!

WIN WIN WIN If you want to walk away with a Mythos & Insight gift hamper including shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, firming oils, anti-stress massage oils, shower gels, shower scrub, body butter, body milk, hand and nail cream, cleansing facial bar, naturally slimming soap, suncare milk, deep tan oil, aloe moistursing and cooling gel, and MORE! Just answer the question below and email us with your full name and contact details on [email protected]

Dream Date ReadyRed lipstick, check. Little black dress, check. Diamond-studded earrings, check. If you think you’re ready to have him swooning, think again! Nothing completes a gorgeous, evening look like good hair styling. It doesn’t have to be complicated, just letting your hair down will do the trick. Though, you want it to be voluminous at the crown and reaching below your shoulders – that’s what will add the feminine touch!

Most of us aren’t blessed with good length and volume. Thanks to the salty water in this part of the world, hair fall is common which makes things worse. There are ways to work around this: rinsing your hair with drinking water just before you step out of the shower, oiling your hair regularly, following a healthy diet and drinking lots of water, and exercising. Though, these are lifestyle changes and you will need a lot of patience to see results. So, what is an instant solution?

Effortless Hair Extensions is the answer! Regular extensions damage your natural hair due to clipping and may even lead to scalp diseases. But what sets Effortless Hair Extensions apart is that it is synthetic hair attached to a string which you can easily slip over your head. Then just brush your natural hair over it and voila! Effortless Hair Extensions provides a quick and easy way to add body and fullness in an instant. Also, there are a wide range of colours available and you can style it anyway you want to. Valentine’s Day is coming up this month and may be this is just the magic trick you need to be dream date ready!

“I had an amazing experience with Dr Dean Gomes and love the final results. I fully intend to be a returning customer! I have seen the results of overzealous use of Botox and fillers but Dr Dean gave me a very natural make-over. Flying back on the red eye flight to England, for Christmas was the ultimate proof for me - I arrived looking fresh and alert, and all my friends in the UK commented on how refreshed I am looking. Bye, bye tired eyes and wrinkles!” – Michelle Page

Hair & Make-up, Check!"Michelle's natural hair colour is dark golden brown. She wanted to go a bit lighter, so I changed her base colour to golden blonde and applied the lightest blonde highlights and golden mahogany blonde lowlights. I gave her a bob and layered haircut to suit the shape of her face and finally simple make-up to enhance her natural beauty." - Felda del Prado

“Felda gave me ideas about hair colour and we even chopped off about 6 inches of my locks, though, I love the final result! And I have my beautiful hair extensions from Hair by Becca, for when I want those inches back! The make-up session was an eye-opener, literally! I will definitely continue to go to Felda's.” – Michelle Page

“I was very excited to win Bahrain Confidential’s makeover prize at the BSPCA auction. It was the

very first social event we attended as we had only moved to the island in August last year. I really didn't know what to expect but was delighted

to see a list of lovely, pampering treats. The overall experience has been wonderful; I’ve learned new ways to look at colour, found a great hairdresser and lost some

wrinkles! What a great way to start my new life in Bahrain - thanks to the team at

Big Deal is a group buying website that posts the best discounted deals on Bahrain’s favourite outlets ranging from products, services, health and lifestyle to travel and events.

For businesses in the Kingdom, it offers an exciting new way to market their products and get free online advertising and for consumers it puts the power of numbers in your hands. Because once a desired product is offered with a “big deal” all you have to do as an interested consumer is get your friends, family and everyone you possibly can, interested in the Big Deal and it’s yours! Not only do you get a product, service, trip or event - you get it at the price you want!

How Big Deal works for businesses? What Big Deal needs is for the merchant to set the minimum target that he would need to generate from the deal. Then Big Deal, posts the offer on their website for free. The company has a database of active consumers, and if the merchant has an existing database, Big Deal can tap into that too.

The email advertisement then goes out to hundreds of customers who are reached through both the Big Deal website and their email addresses - if they’ve registered with Big Deal- as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

In addition, the customers are motivated to promote the deal to their friends. So there’s a huge knock-on effect and the customer has a hand in being part of the activation of the deal, to make sure the deal reaches its minimum number of people. Users tell their friends using Facebook, Twitter, email or phone. Until Big Deal reaches the target the merchant sets, the deal will not go live.

If the target that the merchant has set is achieved - the deal will go live! That means that consumers that have signed on for the deal will get the coupon automatically sent to their inbox which they can print and use like cash.

If the stipulated minimum isn’t reached then the deal doesn’t go live. The only down side to that is that there’s no change to the merchant’s status. The up side is that even if the deal doesn’t go through the merchant will not be charged.

Using Big Deal is secure and easy for customers too!Shopaholics can rejoice! Right on their computers, they know where the best deals

are on offer! That’s because all users have to do is check out the Big Deal website every day to see the latest Big Deals or subscribe to a Bargain Alert and they get the deals emailed to them every morning. What’s more payment is made through the safe, secure, highly encrypted Credimax payment gateway.

When a Big Deal goes live, in other words, when enough people have joined to activate the deal, Big Deal sends them a coupon that they can print and use like cash.

On the one hand it guarantees the best offer for the people of Bahrain to enjoy and on the other hand it guarantees footfall and revenue for the member establishment.

What Big Deal offers is a bridge between the retailer and potential customers.

It’s truly a win-win case. The merchant now has another very lively channel of highly focused, targeted advertising – for which he pays nothing unless it results in sales. Which other medium offers him this? That’s why it’s called a Big Deal.

Love is a beautiful emotion and research states that this emotion can have tremendous and remarkable benefits for your body. People talk about staying healthy by eating the right kind of food, getting the right exercise regime into your daily routine and more and when you go for your regular health check up, your doctor probably will not tell you this, but not having love by your side (we do not mean the physical kind), can be dangerous to your health as it can lead to obesity, depression, smoking and more.

This is the four letter word can turn the your worst times into your best times.

WANT BETTER HEALTH? THE CLUE IS:

1. Meditation There is a certain type of meditation that

is called ‘loving-kindness’. This is said to strengthen your capacity to have a positive connection with people.

Method: Sit in a comfortable, relaxed position (upright

though) that helps you take deep breathes. Pay attention to your heart while you think of someone dear to you. Visualise their face and their good qualities. Once you do that, take a few minutes and repeat to yourself slowly these phrases of goodwill.

• May(thenameofthepersonyouare thinking of) be happy.

• Mayhe/shebesuccessful.• Maythispersonlivesafelyandlivewith

ease.

You can end this meditation by constantly reminding yourself that this type of good feelings can be generated anytime, anywhere. Also, do not forget to tell people about this. Spread the love.

Page 77: Bahrain Confidential Feb 2015

2. Renew and Recharge Your Body You know what they say, ditch those toxins that cause you to gain that extra

weight. That way, shedding weight gets a little easy. A little love for your heart will do you a lot of good. Research says spending time with a loved one lowers blood pressure. So make sure you have lunches planned, movie nights saved in your diaries. Also, you know when you see that special someone, you heart starts racing really fast. Apparently, your brain releases hormones like dopamine, adrenaline that makes your heart stronger. These spikes in your heart rate help pump blood better.

3. Get A Pet; It’s Called Pet Therapy How can you say no to those cute little faces! For years, people have admitted that owning a pet has helped them cope with

a lot of mental and physical problems like:• Banishloneliness.Yes,wesaidbanish.Howcanyouevenfeellonelywhen

those cuddly animals take all your time!

• Heartpatientswithpetstendtolivelongerthanthosewithoutpets.Thosewhohavepetsbytheir side at times of difficulty suffer fewer increases to heart rates, blood pressure, and are more emotionally stable.

• Certaindogscanbetrainedtopredictaseizure.Thishelpsinalertingpeopleclosetothemoreven the individual itself.

• Havingafurrycompanionalsohelpsinsocialinteractionandboostsconversation.

“Regardless of age, regardless of position, regardless of the business we happen to be in, all of us need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You."

As Tom Peters rightly said, we all need to have a personal brand – one that will define who we are and what we do. Personal branding has the potential to single you out as a professional person in your field of expertise. You are a unique person with a multitude of skills and knowledge so how do you want to be branded? Today, you have chosen to follow your spouse to Bahrain and therefore by default you are a trailing spouse. The question you need to ask yourself is do you want to be branded only as a trailing spouse or do you want to take this opportunity to also recreate yourself and establish your own brand identity?

Personal branding is easier to achieve than company branding - you know exactly who you are, what your skills are, what you can do and what you cannot or don't want to do. YOU are the Brand of your own company. So how can you create that exclusive brand called YOU? How do you establish your brand identity? One of the things you need to do is focus on the three C's of branding: clarity, constancy and consistency.

Clarity. You must be clear about who are. Define your brand. What do you stand for? What do you want people to associate you with when they think of your name - your brand? Be different; be personal so people can connect with you.

Constancy. Are you visible to your chosen audience? Create your online presence. You want people to be able to find you – start with a website or a blog, open social media pages on selected channels. The more active you are online the more you will appear on search engines. Have you ever googled your name? If not then you should do this right away – see what the results are.

Consistency. Utilise your social media channels to promote who you are. Post relevant content about what you represent. Share information with your followers. Be sure to use uniformity all along – same wording, same tone of voice, same colours – express your brand in the same way across all channels. Use social media to inform, promote and connect.

With the rise in popularity of social media the world over, it has become easier to promote your personal brand effectively and economically. You can choose to have your website hosted on shared platforms at minimal cost; your email address is free and so are social media channels such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook etc.

Whether you are looking at opening a small business or simply sharing with your friends and

family the exciting opportunity of living in various and diverse countries, creating and promoting your brand identity - your uniqueness - is the first step to achieving that.

The buzz in town – “The hot model who posed with Cristiano Ronaldo for Sacoor Brothers fashion line”.A Brazilian model, youngest of three sisters, talented and quite obviosuly gorgeous lady known for her multiple appearences and for her work with various fashion brands.

Bahrain Confidential, in an EXCLUSIVE interview talks to Anna Beatriz Barros.

Who Is The Top Model That Posed With Cristiano Ronaldo?

Anna Beatriz Barros

exclusive interviewBahrain Confidential February 2015

What did you want to be when you were a child?I wanted to be a doctor, but nowadays I faint at the sight of blood. I do not think I would have been a good doctor!

You were discovered by a talent scout when you were out walking with your sister. Was it a difficult start for you at the time?I was at the beach with my sister, in Rio de Janeiro, and I had no idea what the fashion world was. I was 13 and hadn’t even heard of Claudia Schiffer. But my mother – who was always looking ahead, always wanted to know everything about me – she used to measure me every month to find out how tall I was going to get and was convinced that I was really going to be a model. Later, I won a contest and was able to get a world contract. I moved to New York. It was very hard for me at the beginning. I didn’t speak English, wasn’t used to the cold, the competition, rejection… But as time went by, I began to understand the business.

Although you are very young, your career already spans to almost 20 years. What were the most memorable moments for you? My first big fashion show – a show for Christian Dior – that was when I really thought: "I’ve got where I wanted to get, I’ve reached the top".There was also my first job at Victoria’s Secret, which became a veritable phenomenon. I like it when people recognise me, the affection from fans. I even like it when they ask to take photos – after all, I’m a model, it’s my job.

Do you have any record number of hours worked in one day?I’ve worked almost 20 hours straight, without breaks. And that has happened more than once.

Is it true that your only flaw, professionally speaking, is that you’re shy?In the beginning, I was very shy. When people stopped and looked at me, I used to panic a bit. But then, I learned to deal with it and it went away.

And what’s your best quality as a model?I’m very professional and always on time, I do what’s asked of me. If I have to go out in the cold, I go. If I am asked to jump, I jump.

How far do you hope to go? It’s hard to say, after a career of 20 years. I’m very happy with my life. But I’d like to do a makeup campaign. I’ve never done one.

Feelings for Football.I love the game, but I'm a disaster at it.

What was it like working with the best in the world- Cristiano Ronaldo? It was great. He’s really nice, calm, not at all like a “star”. I was flattered. I had heard that Cristiano Ronaldo was a really calm person, so the shoot went just as I had expected it to.

“Really calm”?He was relaxed. For example, I asked him: "Can I lean on your shoulder?" and he immediately said yes. He didn’t restrict anything. When he came into the room, you could feel a strong presence, like a bright light.

What’s your wardrobe like?I think I’m a casual chic. But it depends on the occasion. For example, if I wake up feeling pretty, I like to dress well, put on some makeup, etc. But, if I’m tired, I prefer a more relaxed style, jeans, no makeup.

Is there ever a time when you don’t feel pretty? (Laughs)Of course, lots of times. I am human.

What do you like doing when you are away from the spotlights?I love horse riding. It’s my passion. I’ve been riding since I was 6. I also love food, trying out new dishes, travelling, and spending time with the people I adore –

my friends, my boyfriend, my mother. I’m just a person who enjoys living.

What advice would you give a woman?Women nowadays need to take care of themselves: not just their beauty, but their health too. Men prefer women who know how to take care of themselves.

What’s your favourite Sacoor Brothers item this season? The white dress I was photographed in with Cristiano. It’s beautiful.

Your mentor. My mother. I really trust her. If she says "jump into the hole", that’s what I would do.

An object you are never parted from…My phone.

Something you would change in your life…I would like to have a bit more routine. It’s something I believe is necessary and, as of now, I can’t have it.

When you finish modelling, what do you intend to do?I want to start my own brand, and be a designer. There are also lots of small but important things I want to do like learning to cook, speaking French, basically everything I didn’t have time for when I started working.

Sacoor Brothers is located in City Centre Bahrain

The latest underwater vehicle from the Netherlands-based submersible manufacturer U-Boat Worx, the HP Sport Sub 2, is also its most compact to date, requiring a footprint of just 71 square feet

of storage space and weighing only 4,850 pounds—nearly 3,000 pounds less than the company’s next smallest sub. Because of its compact size, the sub can easily fit in the tender garage of nearly any yacht longer than 100 feet without a requiring a refit. It is also light enough to be launched and recovered with existing tender cranes.

The cockpit of the HP Sport Sub 2 can accommodate the pilot and one passenger, with its acrylic dome allowing for nearly 360-degree views of the sub’s surroundings. An array of six thrusters provides

vertical and horizontal propulsion, controlled by a user-friendly interface that is intuitive enough for even an untrained passenger to take a turn behind the controls. The thrusters allow the craft to travel at up to 3 knots on the surface and 2 knots underwater, though an upgraded propulsion system is available that allows the sub to reach 5 knots on the surface and 3 knots underwater. The HP Sport Sub 2 is capable of descending as far as 330 feet, for trips that can last up to six hours. In case of an emergency,

the craft is equipped with life-support systems that can operate for up to 96 hours.

The HP Sport Sub 2 is priced from $1.35 million (approximately BD508923), which includes an

operator training course and certification. U-Boat Worx plans to begin

deliveries, this fall.

Car Resolutions 2015!

CAR NEWS

Kamran Shaukat, Jaguar Land Rover Brand Manager at showroom

Save hundreds of bucks on car maintenance with these New Year promises to your car! – Powered by Carmudi, the fastest way to buy and sell cars online.

# 1Carry out two check-ups per year. Are you confident that your car fluids, battery, brake system, steering and suspension are up to scratch? Think again! Unless you have scheduled two car check-ups per year with an expert engineer, you cannot be sure. Only trusted experts can identify the smallest of problems and thus help you save on your maintenance costs in the longer term. If there is a problem, it will be picked up early on, and thus prevent it from turning into

Land Rover Sales Milestone

a more costly repair job. And when it comes to selling your vehicle, potential buyers will be very impressed both with the condition of your car and the maintenance documents that you can produce at the time of the sale. So get ready to cash in more from your car.

Result: Higher resale value, plus save up to $200 (approximately BD75) on breakdown costs!

# 2Avoid aggressive driving, be smart. Are you an adrenaline-seeking, pedal-to-the-metal kind of driver? If so, then this resolution will surely be difficult to stick to. But it’s not impossible, and the savings will be well worth it. Stop the high speed driving; avoid quick starts and hard braking. Drive smart and increase your fuel efficiency. You can even further reduce your fuel costs by driving at the optimal fuel saver speed of between 80 and 100 kilometers per hour.

Result: Increase your fuel efficiency by up to 40 per cent!

# 3Maintain proper tire inflation. Over inflated tires coupled by poor road conditions - potholes, rocky roads etc, can lead to rapid wear and tear and even punctured tires. If you want to get the best performance out of your tires, then you must keep your tire inflation at optimal levels. How? Check the information provided by your tire manufacturer. Keep in mind that under inflated tires can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 15 per cent, reduce your tire life and can lead to maneuverability problems which can cause accidents.

Result: Save on tire costs, fuel costs by up to 4 per cent and repair costs, and avoid risk of accidents.

# 4Keep-up with fluid changes. Give a lot

of importance to oil and transmission fluids, making sure to carry out regular changes. Why? It will help to

ensure the brakes and clutch system, are well maintained, thus avoiding the need for replacement which can be rather

expensive and time consuming. Replacing brakes can costs up to $300 (approximately BD113), and repairing clutch system can

cost up to $1100 (approximately BD414).

Result: Save more than BD500 on replacing the brake and clutch system!

# 5Keep your car clean. You will be surprised to know that dirt and grime

can be very harsh on your vehicle, especially for the interior of your car. Investing in a good quality car mat and vacuuming it on a regular basis can fetch you

good long-term returns. So, keep your car clean and make use of your car-care kit regularly.

Result: Save up to $5000 (approximately BD2000) by not having to replace the entire interior of your car!

he Audi A7 continues to set new standards in automotive design, just as it did when it was first launched back in 2010. The most striking changes in the latest models are to the Single

frame grille, bumpers, tailpipes and headlights. LED technology is now standard.

The body of the all- new Audi A7 consists primarily of aluminum and high tech steel grades. It is extraordinarily lightweight and designed for maximum comfort in terms of noise. The cargo space under the long, electrically driven trunk lid has a base capacity of 535 liters. When the rear seat backs are folded down it grows to 1,390 liters!

The sporty style of the exterior is echoed in the car’s spacious interior with pristine aluminum/Beaufort walnut inlay and standard Valcona leather - impressive finish! The color palette has been redesigned, offering six color options even for the seats.

More Power! You can choose from three powerful and highly efficient engines: two TFSI and one FSI engine. Their power rating ranges from 220 hp to 333 hp. The top

of the range engine, the 4.0 TFSI is available in the Audi S7, and Audi RS 7, delivering 450 hp and 560 hp respectively and using innovative COD (cylinder on demand) technology.

The engine configurations have a seven speed S tronic transmission; the RS 7 is equipped with the eight-speed tiptronic transmission. In the version with front wheel drive, the dual clutch transmission has been fully redeveloped. In engine configurations starting at 333 hp, quattro permanent all-wheel drive can be supplemented with the sport differential

(standard on RS 7), which actively distributes power between the rear wheels.

The salon features wheels with diameters ranging from 18 to 21 inches and the power steering system features an electromechanical drive for high efficiency, thus combining sporty precision with high comfort.

Infotainment The standard MMI navigation plus system with MMI touch, utilises the latest generation of the modular infotainment system; its highlight is a powerful graphics processor from Audi’s partner Nvidia. Touchpad control lets the driver scroll and zoom-in lists and maps. The top of the Hi-Fi line is the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System (standard in the RS 7).

The assistance systems – including adaptive cruise control with stop and go function, the further improved night vision assistant and the Audi pre sense safety system – are also state of the art. Audi side assist and Audi active lane assist work closely together to make lane changes even safer.

ne of the world’s most successful SUVs is now in Bahrain! The 2015-generation can be identified by the new front and rear designs and by its new colours. In terms of technology, all V6 and V8

models now come equipped with an automatic post-collision braking system (helps prevent a secondary collision in case of an accident), bi-xenon headlights and a coasting function.

The front-end design of the Touareg has been totally re-developed. Especially distinctive are the headlights which are now larger; moreover, bi-xenon headlights as standard and the newly designed LED daytime running lights, available from the SEL package onwards. It is available in a total of twelve body colours; five of which are new to the model package: “Light Silver Metallic“, “Sweet Date Gold“, “Moonlight Blue Metallic“, “Black Oak Brown Metallic“ and “Reef Blue Metallic“.

The new Touareg also offers an extended line-up of upholstery materials and wood accents - the “Vienna leather“: a fourth colour, “Bonanza Brown“ (dark brown), is now offered in addition to the colours

“Titan black“, “Corn Silk Beige“ and “Natural Brown“. In addition to these four colours, there is the elegant “Nappa leather“ which can now be ordered in the new colour “St. Tropez“ (light sand hue) and “Bonanca Brown” . Also new are the two fine wood accents “Sapelli Mahagoni“,”Wallnut” and “Engineered Ebony“.

Above the RCD 550 infotainment system, the central push button/display bar on the centre console is now extended. Previously the console consisted of three elements: “Park Distance Control“(PDC), hazard warning unit and status display “Passenger airbag off“. In the new generation Touareg, the new push button for windscreen heating has been integrated to the right of the passenger airbag indicator, meaning the three button module now boasts five buttons. Another upgrade as standard includes a manual lumbar support adjustment in the front seat area.

The V8 versions offer extra standard features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, the “Chrome & Style“ design package, comfort seats in “Vienna leather“, fine wood accents, electric opening and closing function for the boot lid, anti-theft warning system and a Keyless entry and exit, and engine starting system.

In everyday driving, fuel consumption is reduced by an optimised stop-start system, a standard coasting function for the V6 versions (until now only available with the Touareg Hybrid) which means as soon as the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the engine is decoupled from the gearbox; this is also known as “coasting“– a function even possible at vehicle speeds up to 130 km/h. The new Touareg is available with both V6 and V8 FSI, a direct-injection petrol engines.

For your test drive visit the Volkswagen showroom in Sitra.

t’s official! Italian food is comfort food, at least for me. I simply can’t imagine how a warm, cheesy, saucy pasta dish will not uplift a drooping spirit or how a crunchy, thin crust pizza drizzled with nutty olive oil will not assure

me that everything’s going to be okay! It’s one thing to dig into Italian cuisine when

you’re relaxed, over a weekend, perhaps but how about eating some spaghetti and meatballs or a bruschetta for lunch, on a weekday? Getting yourself to work after that is going to be a tall order (hope my boss is not reading this!) but hey, it does pamper your taste buds to bits, and we all need some of that to brave a busy day at work!

Stefano Demartini, Chef at Medzo, InterContinental Regency Bahrain’s Italian restaurant invited me to sample their Business Lunch. He is originally from Sicily, the land of pizzas! We talked about the menu, and Chef Stefano described each of his Italian creations so passionately, I coudn't wait to start eating!

We started with appetisers and I selected the fried aubergine. Crispy slices covered in warm cheese and Italian spices really worked my appetite for the main course. You can also choose other appetisers like a simple tomato and cheese bruschetta drizzled with olive oil and garnished with herbs or a basic salad with this magical dressing that only Chef Stefano knows.

We moved on to the main course. I decided to have the pizza, a thin crusted one with boiled egg slices, pepperoni (beef or pork), mushrooms, black olives and of course cheese as toppings. Chef Stefano introduced me to his special infused olive oil drizzle which enhanced the flavour of my pizza. Though I couldn’t finish it and had to pack it to-go, I really liked it. There are other options for main course like spaghetti (al dente) with a rich meatball gravy and lasagna – thin sheets of pasta layered with saucy goodness.

I was stuffed by the end of it all but felt happy and yes, comforted. We ended our lunch with a cup of strong coffee; I needed it to get back to the office.

I’d totally recommend this place to anyone, especially Italian food lovers. The ambience at Medzo is great too, whether you’re having a quiet evening dinner with your family or a formal business lunch with colleagues. Great service coupled with delicious food and of course Chef Stefano’s hospitality - my verdict for Medzo is a thumbs-up!

Vacationing in Dubai might not be what most people have in mind for a holiday, especially if you already reside in the Middle East. But, I was up for anything that involved getting on a plane, sleeping till late hours, gaining some holiday fat and experiencing new things.

I have to admit, putting relaxation aside (Yup! We didn’t really get much of that), this trip would definitely go into my memory lane.

Fine dining, shopping, endless hours of walking (we had to walk off the amount of food we ate, and I’m not even joking) it was fun, one after the other.

Things I can strike off my First Time List- Fishing, camping, shooting, desert safari in the night (it’s so much better then because you cannot see a thing!)

And of course New Year’s Eve. We are in one of the most happening places in the world, so it had to be done in style! Getting on to the VIP guest list of one of the global superstars (I don’t intend on disclosing who) is definitely something I’ll be talking about for a while- the #DXBNYE at The Meydan. It was the perfect start to 2015 with Pharrell Williams, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Busta Rhymes, Paul Oakenfeld, Charli XCX, Sky Blu and Seb Fontaine performing at one end and when you turn around, there it was, the most talked about Burj Al Khalifa fireworks!

So, like I was saying EPIC holiday and I returned refreshed, happy and all buckled up for 2015.

Bring it on 2015!

Things to knowTaxisTaxis are easily available in the capital, Manama, and have meters but be sure to make the driver use the meter. 99% of drivers won’t switch on the meter and will try to charge you double the legal fare. Beware!

Confidential Tip: BD1 per five minutes in the cab is the most you should pay for an un-metered journey. If traveling from the airport or busy taxi rank, add BD2/after midnight add BD1 to the total e.g. a 10 minute drive from the airport after midnight should cost you no more than BD5 (BD2 + BD2 + BD1= BD5). Taxis do use meters and companies may use similar rates.

Avoiding OffenceGenerally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.
