We are more than halfway through our 2015 journey, let us stop in our paths and take a breather, let

us take a look back at what we have done and experienced in the past few months, and let us evaluate the various lessons we have learned during this period. Let us remind ourselves that as long as we are breathing our journeys continue and let us always walk our paths with the aspiration to become someone better, a better person who enjoys the journey that is life.

“Triumph through Challenges” offers an alternative perspective on life and how our mind set may affect our disposition towards life and its challenges. We hope to encourage everyone to see life as a blessing, and from that point of view, continue in their journeys of life with a zest regardless of the challenges and problems that they experience.

What children see, they will remember; “Sportsmanship in Children” reminds us that

sports alone do not teach children sportsmanship; it is the behavior and actions of adults in sports that teach our children sportsmanship. We should never forget this when we introduce our children to the world of sports.

“Siblings for Life” shares some information on the importance of sibling relationships to our children, from the time that they are young, until the time that they are fully grown adults living their own lives with separate families. Now that we know this, as families with young children, let us take conscious efforts to encourage positive sibling relationships among our children.

“Collaboration towards Development” continues our advocacy on community development and offers an alternative approach in community collaboration. Instead of families spearheading community development programs, let us allow our community institutions to spearhead the efforts to collaborate towards a common vision.

LIFE

We have heard that at some time everyone has a problem or even multiple problems. A young boy will spend hours in sadness

after breaking his favorite toy while a young man who just graduated from college will probably feel similar emotions if he fails to receive an employment offer from a company that he has been aspiring for.

Regardless of our age, health conditions, stations in life, or civil status, life has a way of throwing its curve balls at us. We do not have to consciously plan to avoid and evade all these curve balls, we simply cannot, what we have to be ready for is to prepare ourselves so that we can continue to play regardless of the curve balls that will hit us.

First and foremost, let us remind ourselves that a life without any problem is impossible, it is a myth. Some of us believe that the more wealth we accumulate the less life problems we will have. We may worry less about next month’s mortgage payments and expenses as we have more money in the bank but these problems do not simply vanish, these problems are replaced by different problems, some common ones are stress and strained interpersonal relationships with the family, both of which have greater negative effects on one’s health and well-being in the long run.

Second, we need to honestly assess the situations that we are in. Sometimes our perspectives create problems for us, we complain about our bosses and jobs, we complain about our wives and husbands, and we complain about our children and family members. Are these truly the sources of our concerns and problems in life? Or are we inadvertently creating our own problems because of our personal views and biases? Are we really going to be happier if we resign and join another company, or will we be worse off there with a boss that we cannot tolerate and colleagues that we are happy with? Let us try to view life from a lens that is unaffected by our personal biases, do we really have a problematic life or are we introducing problems into our lives because of certain aspirations we have developed over time?

There are problems, there will always be challenges in life and we should not sit around waiting for these problems to resolve on their own. We need to address life’s challenges, we need to plan and implement possible solutions to resolve our problems, but first we need the right mind-set and perspective, without these we will not be able to appropriately act to resolve our problems. What does not destroy us can make us stronger; let us triumph in life by properly acting on its challenges.

PARENTING

By Debbie Huang

A few weeks ago I saw a photo of my young nephew practicing on a surfboard, it was his first time to surf and he was receiving

instructions from a surfer. The photo reminds me of myself almost two decades ago, trying to surf the rough waves of the ocean without proper training and instructions, the memories made me smile and remind me about the importance of sports in children’s lives.

Sports is important for children, physical activity through sports is a foundation of good health, in addition and more importantly, what children observe as they go through the process of learning a sports, sportsmanship, is a key foundation in developing strong characters in adults.

Children observe good sportsmanship in adults through sports. This is something that adults who are involved in introducing children to sports should never forget. A sport itself does not teach good sportsmanship to children, the adults who introduce that sport to children teach good sportsmanship, their actions and behaviors are directly responsible in the development of children’s concepts of sportsmanship.

Sportsmanship teaches us to respect our teammates, our coaches, our opponents, and our officials. Children observe this respect from the adults in sports, if they do not see adults respecting other adults in sports their definition of sportsmanship will definitely be skewed.

Let us encourage our children to develop sportsmanship as they pursue various sports. Let us remind our children to treat all their opponents with respect. We can start by explaining the importance of the simple gesture of shaking the hand of an opponent before a match, or why it is always best for us to display dignity and grace in all situations, even when we lost a match, by congratulating our opponents.

Children who develop good sportsmanship bring these values beyond sports, into other areas of their lives, into classrooms and into their respective communities. This is why it becomes much more important that we, as adults who will introduce or are introducing children to sports, should always prioritize the importance of good sportsmanship above winning. Let us not play to win, let us play to have fun, to have fun, to help the team, and to develop our skills.

Children who observe adults behaving in a sportsmanlike way have an understanding that the real winners in sports are those who exemplify sportsmanship whether they win or lose a game, to act and behave with dignity in the conduct of sports. Winning a game is no longer the priority for these children, and such mind-set definitely is nurtured through the behavior and actions of the adults around them.

PARENTING

We have heard of sibling rivalry and sibling bullying, and we do all that we can to avoid such from happening in our

homes. What we probably missed is the fact that research has shown that positive sibling relationships early in our lives may significantly affect the development of our characters as adults, and directly impact our health conditions as adults.

Psychology Today’s Lohmann points out that children “with positive sibling relationships report higher life satisfaction and lower rates of depression later in life. Also in times of illness and traumatic events, siblings provide emotional, social, and psychological support to each other. Research shows that this support is common regardless of whether they live next to or far away from each other.”

How should we digest this information and how can we as parents with children of our own react? Foremost, some explanations on the reasons why sibling relationships can be of greater impact on children’s lives compared to other relationships may help. First, siblings are forever, they are siblings since they were young, and they will still be siblings even when they have their own separate lives. Second, sibling relationships are often some of the most authentic relationships; they grew up in one family, sharing the same parents, the same childhood memories, and the same home. Third, our siblings is part of who we are, they have a shared history that makes their relationship unique from the

PARENTING

relationships they have with their friends and other family members.

Sibling relationship is important in child development, let us initiate conscious efforts to nurture positive sibling relationships in our own family:1. Encourage our children to respect each other

even when they are toddlers. Negative and harmful behaviors in sibling relationships should never be tolerated in our family.

2. Never practice favoritism towards any of our children.

3. Family time is important, it must be a routine, a venue where family members can talk about anything and everything, about feelings and emotions, about issues and expectations. The more time our children spend time together to do these things, the better is the bond that will develop among and between them.

4. There will be disagreements, encourage your children to try to resolve such disagreements on their own first. Explain the importance of win win solutions, guide them in negotiating towards such solutions when they are younger.

5. Encourage our children to spend time and develop healthy relationships with their siblings. They do not have to be with their siblings 24 hours a day 7 days a week, a few hours a week will not be troublesome, they can go to the mall or even watch a movie together.

COMMUNITY

Collaboration Towards Development

By Debbie Huang

We have been encouraging families to spearhead community development efforts and act as catalysts to achieve

our communal vision. We continue to encourage families to participate in such activities, today however, we remind our community institutions that they also bear the social responsibility of developing and achieving a community’s vision.

Let us take a look at what a few educational institutions have done in some parts of the world, their actions and contribution towards community development are inspirational and should encourage our community institutions to initiate similar efforts.

A school in the United States is offering special summer programs to help children with disabilities

express themselves and excel. The programs offered by the school include gymnastics, dance, and theater, and the children who enroll in the programs are mostly children with disabilities, including amputees and children with autism.

Trained educators and instructors work with these children from the beginning of the program, towards the end of which, they will organize an event to showcase the confidence and skills that these children have gained through the program and through the love and care of their educators and instructors. Such programs are not only beneficial for the children, such programs are beneficial for the entire community. These programs allow the community to collaborate and bond, to eventually achieve their vision of community development.

COMMUNITY

We can start by identifying an educational institution in our community, an institution that is eager to participate in community development. Such an institution may not have sufficient resources to offer programs similar to what are offered in developed countries, nevertheless, as members of the community let us collaborate to support the institution.

We can help the institution identify the technical resources necessary to support the programs that will be offered to children with disabilities. For instance, children with autism can be encouraged to join theater-oriented programs, and there are special educators and instructors who can help these children go through such programs. There are costs in offering these programs and a community institution may not have the financial

resources necessary to offer such programs for free. As members of the community, we can help by identifying sponsors for children who want to join the program, and if we have sufficient financial resources ourselves, we may consider participating as sponsors too.

There are other ways to help; families in the communities can collaborate to organize the events to showcase the talents of children enrolled in the programs. They can make the necessary arrangement for the events, help prepare the food and drinks to be offered to visitors, and perhaps sell tickets to visitors of the events to help raise funds for future programs. The ways that families can collaborate towards a common vision of development are limitless, the possibilities are endless.

FAMILY

Bali is with no doubt one of the best holiday destinations for everyone in the family. When it comes to teenagers, the island offers many activities that

will entertainment them and make the best use of their energy.

If your teens like surfing, the beaches of Canggu, Double Six and Kuta are good spots to get on a board and ride some waves. All of these beaches are in

the southern part of the island, only a few minutes away from the most popular destinations in town.

Some teens are more interested in interacting with nature. If that is the case, Bali Safari & Marine Park should be in the list of places to visit. But do not conform to just that. You can also take them to Lovina in north Bali and watch the dolphins swim at sunrise. Also, Bali Botanical Gardens in Bedugul and the Bali Bird Park in Gianyar should be included in your itinerary if you are planning to stay in the

island for a while.

Do not hesitate in taking them to the new Escape Hunt Experience if they like to solve riddles and crack mysteries. If they feel like they’ve spent enough time at the beach and they rather go for a swim at a pool, take the experience to the next level

and try one of the waterparks in town such as Waterboom, Circus or Splash.

There are also teens that never have enough of the city life entertainment, and they rather go shopping or enjoy a nice movie at the theatre above anything else. If your teens are in that category, southern Bali offers many options for them such as the

widely popular Beachwalk Shopping Center in Kuta.

Whether your teens like indoor activities or outdoor adventures, Bali surely has a place for them to have fun.

FAMILY

It is no secret that any family coming to Bali for holiday, or a long stay, is definitely looking to have some good times at the beach. Mom

might like to rest on a chair and read a book while getting some sun, while dad and the older kids will go out for a swim and perhaps some surfing if the waves are right. However, when it comes to toddlers, their interaction with the sand and the ocean can be unpredictable or unexpected. Their interests change from time to time and at the end of the day they might not enjoy the beach as much as you do, unless you help them out.

Here are some tips that you might find helpful for the next time you go out with your little ones:

1. Feed and entertain them. Every kid has a favorite snack. Why not take that snack along with you for the next beach getaway? Watermelon, apples, and other fresh fruits will surely please their appetite in a healthy manner, but don’t be afraid to bring some chips and cookies for your day at the beach. Whatever they like, bring it along and it will surely put a smile on their faces. Also, bring toys that they like so they can play in the sand whenever they don’t want to go into the water.

FAMILY

By Josue Martinez

2. Protect them. The use of sunscreen in Bali should never be considered as something optional. Even though the middle of the year benefits the island with soft waves of wind, it is important to protect your skin and the one of your kids from the sun. Also, make sure you have enough water to keep them hydrated. A little bit of sun poisoning or dehydration would be more than enough to end the smile in your kid’s face and surely, the smiles of everyone else in the family.

3. Understand them. Perhaps going to the beach sounds like the best idea to you, but your little one might not be as interested in going. It’s necessary to expose the kids to new challenges and adventures, but if your kid doesn’t like the beach maybe you should consider doing something else. Or perhaps your toddler likes to go but prefers to stay in the sand rather than go in the water. Whatever it is that your little ones like to do, make sure you listen to them as you plan your time together.

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH

It seems like it is safe to assume that the things that make us passionate are the things that help us go far. At least that

is the case of the man of the month: Mr. Sagon Togasa.

Back in 1984, Mr. Togasa came to Bali for a two week summer holiday. Little did he know that he would fall in love with the island and come back to become the mastermind behind one of the most successful Japanese food empires in the region.

Mr. Togasa had always been passionate about Japanese food. During his college days in San Francisco, he would drive as far as he needed to do so in order to enjoy a good Japanese meal while listening to good bands playing jazz music.

Today, Mr. Togasa is the proud owner of the franchise of Ryoshi Restaurants and Sakanaya fish markets. His first shop opened its doors next to the famous DVD shop in Seminyak and remained there for the next fifteen years before it moved a few shops down six years ago.

By Josue Martinez

Anyone traveling around South Bali is likely to notice some of Mr. Togasa’s creations as his famous Ryoshi Restaurant already has six branches and is currently preparing a seventh one. With no doubt, Mr. Togasa is one of the individuals responsible for bringing authentic Japanese food to the Bali community. In fact, he holds the title of creating the first sushi bar in Bali, which he used to call Goa back in 2001 when it first opened. Moreover, Mr. Togasa is known for developing his own products. As he noticed that Bali had limited access to authentic Japanese products, he decided to create everything he needed from scratch.

When asked for advice about how to become a successful businessperson, Mr. Togasa encourages people to travel the world and take opportunities to study abroad. He believes that doing these things will allow our minds to see new things and develop fresh and innovative ideas. Ultimately, he believes the secret of success dwells in starting something new without worrying about failing or how much money we can make.

The flavors of the Mediterranean are starting to take over Bali. If you’re looking for a taste of authentic dishes from this region of the

world, make sure you make a stop at Istanbul, a comfy little restaurant near the end of sunset road.

Istanbul is the creation of Turkish chef Kevser Dengiz. Dengiz moved to Bali around two years ago. Following her unstoppable passion for cooking, she decided it would be a good idea to open her own restaurant with recipes she learned from her mom back in Iskenderun, her hometown in southern Turkey.

Hummus, kebab and lamb chops are just some of the many options you can find in this restaurant. What makes it so special is the fact that Dengiz

By Josue Martinez

is committed to make these dishes from scratch. Everything she serves has a fresh and authentic flavor. Even her homemade lemonade is squeezed out of imported lemons.

The options at Istanbul are not only authentic and affordable, but they are also healthy. They do not fry anything on a pan with oil. Instead, everything is cooked in their wooden oven that you will surely notice as you enter the restaurant.

Perhaps you’ve been to Turkey in the past and you miss their food, or you dream of going there one day but today you just wonder what their food tastes like. Whatever is the case, Istanbul will surely satisfy your craving for good Mediterranean food.

Early in June, Ubud hosted its first ever Food Festival, a three day event filled with many activities that focused on something that we

all love and need: Food.

The festival started on June 5, bringing local and international chefs together to lead workshops and food demonstrations in which audiences of all ages and backgrounds gathered to celebrate and

learn more about Indonesian cuisine and all the ingredients and cultural aspects that make it unique among other countries in the world.

Among the invited local chefs were Bara Pattiradjawane, Rahung Nasution and Jon Priadi. The list of speakers also included international chefs such as Ryan Clift and Dave Pynt. Their cooking demonstrations showed how local ingredients have made an impact around the world. Also, foreign chefs who now live in Bali hosted cooking demonstrations in which they showed how non-locals have developed a genuine love for authentic local recipes. Penelope Williams, the chef from Bali Asli, is an example of this and she shared the secrets of how to make a good Sambal Matah and Bumbu Kacang at a food demonstration during the last day of the festival.

The event not only brought together chefs, but it also opened a platform for social media celebrities, food specialists, and university professors to come and discuss the way food intervenes in different aspects of someone’s life. If you did not get the chance to attend this year’s food festival, stay tuned for the one happening next year. You do not want to miss this fun and informative event that will enrich and transform the way you look at food.
