1.Number 1 - La Sagrada Familia churchNumber 1 Barcelona Top Ten Tourist Attractions list is the fabulous unfinished church of La Sagrada Familia designed by Antoni Gaudi. This very unusual construction is Barcelona's most famous and most visited tourist attraction. It is rated one of the world's top attractions by Tripadvisor users. It is free to see from the outside, but going inside is another matter. La Sagrada Familia welcomes over 3 million visitors a year, so expect long queues to get inside. The mornings are busiest. Late afternoons are less crowded. A good tip is to buy skip-the-line ticketsin advance. How long does it take to visit? From the outside it takes about 30 minutes to see. The inside of the Sagrada Familia church takes longer. You might have to queue for 1 hour or more for tickets - and then you will need 1 or 2 hours inside to see it all. But it's worth it. This unfinished basilica is one of the most famous buildings in the world and a top must-see sight in Barcelona. It was designed by famous Catalan architecht Antoni Gaudi over 100 years ago and the foundation stone was laid in 1882, when the surrounding area was just fields. The splendid Sagrada Familia interior was opened to the public in 2012. The outside is still being built and was at 65% completion in 2013. Only 8 towers of the 18 spires are finished. The plan is to complete the Sagrada familia church in 2026 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death in 1926. When finished it will be 144 years since construction began. See a YouTube video animation of how Sagrada Familia will look when finished Gaudi knew that it would take a long time to finish the temple and he famously once said, "My client is not in a hurry!" Gaudi died tragically in 1926 after being hit by a tram. At the time only the nativity facade was completed. Visit the Sagrada familia on a hop-on-hop-off bus tour or take the metro to station Sagrada Familia. See mapVisitor tip: Beat the 1 hour long queues to get inside by buying tickets in advance. Number 8 - Modernist buildingsNumber 8.Modernist buildings Barcelona. Modernisme was a Catalan cultural movement centred in Barcelona and Catalonia from 1888 to 1911. It is most famous for its architectural expression in particular the many works of Antoni Gaud. There are a handful of modernist buildings in Barcelona that are outstanding. Three of them are in the one Barcelona city block called the Illa de la Discrdia - the "Block of Discord" on the street Passeig de Gracia. They are "Casa Amatller" designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, the magical "Casa Batll" by Antoni Gaudi and the "Casa Lle-Morera." A little further up the street Passeig de Gracia on the opposite site is one of Gaudi's most famous buildings in Barcelona named "Casa Mila" - and nicknamed "La Pedrera" (the Quarry). which is pictured above. In the summer months you can enjoy rooftop terrace jazz concerta at La Pedrera. Sadly for visitors in 2014 Casa Mila facade is covered for cleaning and restoration, but you can take a Pedrera guided tour, see exhibitions and have a coffee or drink in the Casa Mila cafe on the first floor. At Casa Batllo you can tour the builiding and also enjoy summer concerts in the modernist courtyard. Another modernist treasure is the beautiful Palau Guell town house near Las Ramblas, also by Antoni Gaudi. For modernist art and furniture visit to the Barcelona Modernist museum. A popular way to see top modernist buildings is on foot on Passeig de Gracia or by taking hop-on-hop-off tourist buses. Nearst Metro stations Passeig de Gracia or Diagonal

Montjuic hill and Poble Espanyol de Barcelona - the Spanish Village of Barcelona. Montjuic hill has many parks and attractions including an old fort at the very top called Montjuic Castle, which has a rich and dark history and fantastic views of Barcelona. The other big attraction on Montjuic hill is a unique Spanish village called Poble Espanyol which was built in 1929 for the Barcelona 1929 World Fair and Universal Exposition. The Poble Espanyol village is the 4th most visited attraction in Barcelona. It was built in 1929 as an architectural experiment to create a village to showcase Spain's different architecturalstyles. It was so popular that it was left intact after the world exhibition and it now houses a wide variety of cafs, summer open air night clubs, restaurants, over 40 very nice handicraft shops and a full programme of concerts and events, especially in the summer. You can also see a very good flamenco show called El Tablao de Carmen at Poble Espanyol, which includes 1 hours free entrance to Poble Espanyol. 2.We suggest the following plan for 3 days and nights

1 day walking (or biking) in the Barcelona's old city centre, called Ciutat Vella, the old town. Ciutat Vellahas three neighbourhoods worth visiting which have major attractions and charm. They are called El Gtico, El Born and Barceloneta. El Raval is also interesting to visit for it's bohemian atmosphere.

1 day to explore the sights of the newer parts of Barcelona on theBarcelona hop-on-hop-off busesoutside the old city which include the 19th century Eixample area, Sant Marti area which has beaches, Les Corts area where the Camp Nou stadium is located, Montjuic hill with parks, city views and an old fort - and Tibidabo hill which has a city views, and old fairground and church.

1 day or half a day outside Barcelona on a day tour outside Barcelona or Half-day tour outside Barcelona to Montserrat Monastery and Mountain - or Girona or Sitges.

You can mix the three days we suggested above, anyway you want. Barcelona shops are usually closed on Sundays (except in July and August,) so a walking day in the old city will be more fun on any day except Sunday. For excursions and day tours outside Barcelona try to avoid the weekends, because many local residents leave Barcelona for the weekend, so beaches and towns outside Barcelona are more crowded and there will be more traffic coming back to the city on Sunday evening.

Most of the Barcelona attractions and things to see are in these three districts of Barcelona, which you can see on the map below. For the best places to stay in Barcelona see our "Best area to stay in Barcelona" guide and check out our Barcelona practical tips page

Ciutat Vella, which means "the old city" in the Catalan language, is the oldest district of Barcelona, where it all started with the Roman city of Barcino.Eixample and Sant Marti are the newer city extensions from 19th & 20th century. Eixample has most of the 19th and early 20th century modernist buildings. Sant Marti used to be the old industrial area of Barcelona but has been modernised since the Olympics in 1992 with modern neighbourhoods and top class beaches.

Take a closer look at the satellite map of part of Barcelona below. You will notice that the old city centre of Barcelona has many narrow winding streets. That is the Ciutat Vella" - the old city of Barcelona dating back to the middle ages. Because of the narrow streets, the tourist hop-on-hop-off buses dont go into the old parts of Barcelona. The hop-on-hop-off buses only stop on wide roads on the edges of the old city, so this part of the city is absolutely best explored on foot or on bicycle.

The Ciutat Vella consists of several neighbourhoods. The most central one is "El Gotico." This is the gothic quarter, which expanded around the original Roman city of Barcelona called "Barcino." You can still see parts of Barcelona Roman city walls and if you look closely at the map of the gothic area of Barcelona, you can still make out the outline of the old Roman city of Barcleona.

The Eixample district, which means extension in the Catalan language, is outside and around the old city of Barcelona. This is the newer part of Barcelona which was built in the late 19th century. Readhow Barcelona's Eixample area was created. There are many interesting tourist attractions to see in this area and they are best seen from the Hop-on-hop-off buses, which make stops at all the big attractions in Barcelona

Day 1 in BarcelonaWalk round Barcelona's old Ciutat Vella areasThe "Ciutat Vella", which means "old city" in the Catalan language, is one of the biggest medievel city areas in Europe. It includes the five neighbourhoods of La Raval, Barri Gotic, La Ribera / El Born and Barceloneta. You can spend 1 day walking or bicycling around the three most interesting neighbourhoods of the old city which are called El Gtico, El Born and Barceloneta,The pedestrian boulevard Las Ramblas cuts through the old city of Barcelona and should not be missed either. If you don't have a full day then start at Las Ramblas street and focus mostly on the Gothic part of the old city, which has the most historic sites in the old city. The gothic area is almost the most central because it grew around theRoman city of Barcelona called Barcino. You can still see parts of the Roman walls and four Roman temple columns in the gothic area of Barcelona. Other sights of interest inthe Gothic area things to see are Las Ramblas street,Barcelona cathedralandthe square Plaa Reial. Then head over to theBorn/Ribera part of the old city, which has some lovely medieval streets, trendy small boutiques and cafes, and two big Barcelona attractions, which are the Picasso museum and famous gothicSanta Maria del Mar church. Then if you have time and want a lovely walk with harbour and sea views, stroll down to Barcelonetawhich is the old fisherman's quarter in Barcelona, which borders on Barcelona's beaches.

Day 2 in BarcelonaSee Modernist sights of Barcelona on hop-on-hop-off tourist bus1 day on the hop-on-hop-off buses exploring the areas outside the old city including the Eixample area, Sant Marti, Les Corts, Montjuic hill and Tibidabo hillThe Eixample is the area that was developed in Barcelona when the the old middle age city became too overcrowded and so in the late 19th century the old medieval city walls were pulled down and a new part of the city called the Eixample sprang up around the old city. This is where you will find most of the famous modernist buildings that Barcelona with one important exception which is the Palua Guell by Guadi which is in the Raval area of the old city. But most of the modernist architecture is in the newer areas of Barcelona and is best seen on a hop-on-hop-off tour, which will take you along the elegant shopping street Passeig de Gracia past Gaudi's Casa Mila and Casa Batllo, also to Sagrada Familia church and past FC Barcelona's famous foot ball stadium Camp Nou. There are several routes on the hop-on-hop-off buses and you can also go as far as the hills overlooking Barcelona which are Montjuic hill and Tibidabo. The hop-on-hop-off buses also visit Plaza Espanya where you can see the famous Magic Fountain but this is best enjoyed at night when you can see the fantastic Magic Fountain light and music show.Sant Marti is the district of Barcelona that is on the coastline of the city. Prior to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics Sant Marti was the industrial area of Barcelona and called the "Manchester of Barcelona." For the Olympic games the area started a process of transformation that now has turned it into a new residential and business area of Barcelona. Sant Marti is somewhat off-centre, but is well connected to the city centre and the big attraction of the Sant Marti area is the close proximity to the beaches. The hop-on-hop-off buses will take your past this area, but apart from the beaches there are no major sights.

Day 3 in BarcelonaSee attractions outside Barcelona on a Day Tour1 day or half a day outside Barcelona on a day or half day group tour or small group tour.Barcelona is a bustling, vibrant and cosmopolitan city. It can also be noisy, busy and hot, especially in the summer. So for Day 3 we recommend that you get out of the city and book a tour to one of the many beautiful spots, which are just one or two hours from Barcelona. There are many top class attractions outside Barcelona and you can choose between a wide variety of wonderful and interesting day tours from Barcelona to popular attractions like the Costa Brava beaches and coast area, Montserrat mountain and monastery, seaside village Sitges, Roman city of Tarragona, Girona - the city of sieges, world famous vineyards of the Penedes region, the pre-pyrenees and Pyrenees mountains and much more.

Just imagine the dedication, devotion and commitment involved in creating a building for that length of time. Some people love the Sagrada Familia and some people hate it but whatever you think I guarantee it will cause a reaction one way or the other. The first time I saw it I was rather shocked. It was so different from anything I had ever seen I had no reference point. However each time I visited it I really grew to love the building. Its uniqueness, its boldness and shear size are breathtaking. It is under construction which means that each time you visit you will see something new. You will also be witnessing a masterpiece in its creation as the work will be going on whilst you visit.I have travelled the world and seen many breathtaking constructions but for me the Sagrada Familia is at the top of the list.
