A very busy October with packed out houses for Jane Eyreand Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy leads us very nicely into the final programme of the year - which includes a couple ofextra screenings for those two sold out runs. Also a fittingfollow up for Brontë fans comes right on the heels of JaneEyre with a very different take on Wuthering Heights.Other fantastic new titles abound but the film event of theyear for me will undoubtedly be the stunning restoration of the greatest of all French films Les Enfants du Paradis.Hugely accessible, fantastically moving it was also amagnificently subversive work of resistance made under the watching eyes of the Nazi occupiers in wartime Paris.Thank you for your support in 2011 and see you in 2012.

Drive [18]

Wednesday 2 & Friday 4 November / 8pmThursday 3 & Saturday 5 November / 5pmDirector Nicolas Winding RefnCast Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Ron Perlman, Christina HendricksUSA 2011 / Colour / 1hr 40m Driver is a Hollywood stunt driver but as he likes to say, “It's only part time.” By night he's the best getaway driver in town. Into hiscarefully controlled world comes single mother,Carey Mulligan... and a whole heap of trouble. It’s been noted before that the irony of film noir was that it came from one of the sunniestplaces on earth – California. From the late ’60sanother set of filmmakers took the stapleelements of the genre – brooding heroes, gun-crazy villains, desperate dames – and broughtthem out into the light... This then is a film builton familiarity, in terms of narrative and style but it’s an entirely welcome riff on old material, a pulse-pounding, electronically enhanced coverversion of a beloved standard. Sure, it’s shallow, but it’s also slickly compelling, beautifullycrafted and so damn shiny. Time Out“The most stylish film in years”The Independent

We Need To TalkAbout Kevin [15]

Sunday 13 November / 2pmMon 14 & Tue 15 November / 8pmWednesday 16 November / 5pmThursday 17 November / 2pmDirector Lynne RamseyCast Tilda Swinton, John C Reilly, Ezra MillerUK/USA 2011 / Colour / 1hr 52m For her third feature after Ratcatcher andMorvern Callar , British filmmaker LynneRamsay has adapted Lionel Shriver's popular2003 novel about an American woman, Eva,suffering from the fallout of a terrible crimecommitted by her teenage son, Kevin.Ramsay's bold and intensely visual adaptationis a fractured, mysterious story that swingsbetween periods and moods and is bothhaunting and provocative. One minute, wewitness the trappings of the suburban dream as Eva and her husband, Franklin, are bringingup two children in comfort and wealth, despitethe rumblings of a familial civil war. The next,we observe the situation of an outcast as Eva is attempting to rebuild her shattered life. Most impressively, Ramsay has converted the defining structure of Shriver's book - aseries of letters from Eva to Franklin - into aradical, lyrical form of first-person cinema. The result is partly a domestic tragedy, partly a horror story and partly a deeplyclaustrophobic and troubling portrait of awoman in crisis.London Film Festival

The Green Wave [12A]

Thursday 17 November / 8pmDirector Ali Samadi AhadiDocumentaryIran/Germany 2010 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 20m Green is the colour of hope. Green is the colour of Islam. And green was the symbol of recognitionamong the supporters of presidential candidateMir-Hossein Mousavi, who became the symbolicfigure of the Green Revolution. This sober yetenraging documentary mixes animation, amateurfootage, interviews and even reconstructions ofTwitter feeds to recall the false hope of Iran’s June 2009 election. Most powerful are the readings from blogs written during that month, and it’s these sections that are animated in a style that recalls the Israeli film Waltz with Bashir.

Anonymous [12A]

Friday 18 & Saturday 19 November / 5pmSunday 20 - Wednesday 23 November / 8pmThursday 24 November / 2pmDirector Roland EmmerichCast Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson, David ThewlisUK/Germany 2011 / Colour / 2hr 10m Roland Emmerich immerses himself inElizabethan England to tackle a creativecontroversy that has intrigued thinkers as variedas Mark Twain, Charles Dickens and SigmundFreud, namely: who actually wrote the body of work credited to William Shakespeare?Anonymous takes as a given that Shakespearewas not their author, and spins a compellingyarn out of the theory that the true writer wasEdward de Vere, the Earl of Oxford. The story is acinematic gift, replete with suspicion, snobbery, duplicity and self-advancement, and Emmerichtackles it with gusto. London is recreated as a city of extremes, from vermin-infestedbackstreets and dubious taverns to the splendourof the royal court, where back-stabbing, vanityand corruption span the class divide. Involved in the intrigue is an epic cast of characters, including Ben Jonson and other notable theatrefigures of the period, as well as the Queen ofEngland, her ambitious advisers and the Earlhimself. Whether you fall into the Oxfordiancamp or don't much care, the whole is rollickinggood fun, and the recreated performances at theRose Theatre are a delight, reminding us thatwhoever they came from, Shakespeare's writingsare a gift to us all.

Based on the award-winning playFarragut North, The Ides of March bringstogether an outstanding cast in a story ofambition, loyalty, betrayal and revenge. As the presidential primary race hots up, some are willing to do anything to beat theopposition. Les Enfants du Paradis [PG]

Friday 2 & Saturday 3 December / 8pmSunday 4 December / 3pmDirector Marcel CarnéCast Arletty, Jean-Louis Barrault, Pierre Brasseur,Maria Casarès, Marcel HerrandFrance 1945 / B&W / Subtitles / 3hr 10m Widely regarded as the greatest French movie of all time, comparable with Lawrence of Arabia,The Leopard or Casablanca as a defining momentin the history of that country’s movie mythology. The exraordinary fact that Carné’s sublimleyromantic yet subtley revolutionary portrait was made during the Nazi Occupation of Parismakes it almost miraculous. Charting the fortunes of various actors, aristocrats, aficionados and villains frequentingParis's theatrical district in the 19th century, thisrich, engrossing tale of professional and personalrivalries, intrigue and unrequited passionexplores, to brilliantly witty effect, the crucial role played by different kinds of performance in all aspects of everyday life. Inspired by real events and colourful characterslike the mime Baptiste Debureau, the film is notmerely a masterclass in great acting but abreathtaking achievement on every front, fromthe superb cinematography and sets to Carné'sdeft elaboration of the sheer genius of JacquesPrévert's script. All are enhanced in this glitteringnew digital restoration.

14

Wuthering Heights [15]

Friday 2 & Saturday 3 December / 5pmSunday 4 December / 8pmMonday 5 & Tuesday 6 December / 5pmWednesday 7 December / 8pmThursday 8 December / 2pm Director Andrea ArnoldCast Kaya Scodelario, James HowsonUK 2011 / Colour / 2hr 10m Director Andrea Arnold is one of contemporaryBritish cinema's boldest directors, so who better to put her own distinctive stamp on this tale ofobsessive love and class division. In Emily Brontë'snovel, a Yorkshire farmer on a visit to Liverpoolfinds a homeless boy on the streets and takes himhome to live as part of his family where the boydevelops an all-consuming relationship with thefarmer's daughter. Arnold has brought a timelessuniversality to the story, and has succeeded in making Heathcliff and Cathy, two of literature'sbest known characters, feel entirely fresh and new. While respectful of the original text, this is a decidedly radical interpretation, not least in itscasting of young unknowns in the lead roles. Equally original is the film's breathtaking visualstyle; for while there is no shortage of filmedversions of Yorkshire's wild and windy moors, it's unlikely you will ever have seen them sobleakly and beautifully captured as here.London Film Festival

Based on the one chapter that was missingwhen Clark published his memoirs 40 years later,My Week With Marilyn depicts the story of theirbrief encounter as Clark escorted Monroe, desperate to get away from her retinue ofHollywood hangers-on and the pressures ofworking, around a different, very real England. In an Oscar-worthy performance the wonderfulMichelle Williams captures not only the stars’notorious fragility, both on-screen and off,but also her magical, unclassifiable charisma, accomplishing the near-impossible task of portraying Marilyn Monroe as an actual person, not just an easily caricatured icon.

HesterCollier leads a privileged life as the beautifulwife of a High Court judge, though theirs is a companionable rather than a passionatemarriage. When Hester meets a young ex-RAFpilot, Freddie Page, she falls devastatingly inlove with him and to the shock of those aroundher she leaves her marriage to live with him in shabby lodgings. But as time passes, Hestercomes to realise that the dashing but damagedFreddie is unable to return her all-consumingpassion, just as she is unable to return herhusband's love. This heartbreaking theme of the painfulinequalities of desire finds exquisite expressionin Davies' screen version, informed as it is by his evident love of the classic melodramas ofthe 1940s and 50s that evoke the pull betweenemotion and repression.

that it is based on the true story of turn-of-the-century pioneer filmmaker Georges Méliès. At the end of his life Méliès, having sold or lostthe right to all his films did in fact work in a toy booth in a Paris railway station and hisoutput contained a collection of mechanical,wind-up figures called automata.Scorcese imbues the film with his own love andknowledge of the silent film era creating a worldthat is both authentic and magical, populated by heroes and villains both slapstick andmysterious who will appeal to audiences of all ages. Not just for children this is a perfectChristmas adventure for imaginations young and old.
