Service Review: NCMP
1.Why we did it
2.What we did
3.Outcomes & new processes
4.Lessons Learnt
5.Future Developments
6.Questions
Context
• YR and Y6 5443
• Participate rates 96% (provisional 18/19)
• 6 front line staff
• Opt-out process
Decision to review NCMP
• Structural & governance changes to 0-19
• Move from South West Yorkshire NHS Foundation Trust (SWYT) to Barnsley
Metropolitan Borough Council (BMBC)
• Realign all 0-19 pathways
• Admin errors
What we already knew
• Delays due to updating child record (Child Health: NHS)
• Relationships with schools needed to be improved
• Service needed to be more efficient & decrease potential for human error
• Staff wanted to do more proactive health promotion
What we did
• Observations
• Discussions & engagement
• Best practice
• Prioritisation: school engagement, planning , IT
& data, clinical pathway & result letter
• Tasks & finish group
• Staff journey
Changes we’ve made
• Introduced School Agreement, designated leads & specific contacts, clear communication GDPR
• Systems Process- broken down into 3 phases– Pre-measurement = Eligibility/School lists and administration.
– Opt-out = New process and way of recording at 1st point of call.
– Measurement = Eligibility populated from SystmOne from 2 phases above.
• Measurements inputted into on offline spreadsheet populated from SystmOne
• Communications: result letter
• Automatic task sent to relevant 0-19 team for nurses to review child’s record, if outside parameters
Pre-measurement
Opt-out
Measurement
Changes continued…
• Continuous data upload to NHS Digital rather than all at once at
the end of the academic year
• Updated clinical pathway
• Offer of health promotion
Outcomes • Easier system
• Improved validity: improved the integrity of the data
• Mitigated risk
• Removed the potential for human error
• Improvements for 0-19, schools, children and parents
Lessons Learnt
• Constantly reviewing & adapting
• Difficulties getting school to engage & nominate a lead but not specific to NCMP
• Monitoring phone call for results– Only 22 calls for results (approx. 0.4%)
• Lack of resilience
• This year service still uploading data ‘in bulk’ towards end of measurement period to NHSD NCMP IT system
Future Developments
• New centralised mailbox and calendar for all NCMP Team
• Workflow document to track progress for each school (resilience)
• and enabling technology
• New technology trials such as auto height and weight data collection
