RICHARD AVEDON Richard Avedon (1923 – 2004) was an American fashion and portrait photographer. An obituary published in The New York Times said that "his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century". Many personalities from politics and culture made a point to be photographed by him. Often produced images that are received into the collective memory, for example, by Ezra Pound, Marilyn Monroe, Igor Stravinsky, John Ford and Henry Kissinger. One of his most famous works is the photography of Nastassja Kinski. (picture above)

IRVING PENN The Photographer (1917-2009) was born in Plainfield, New Jersey and is known as one of the world’s greatest photographers. He studied design and painting under Alexei Brodovitsch at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art. Still a student, he also worked under Brodovitsch at Harper’s Bazaar. Penn’s career included projects with Alexander Liberman for Conde Nast Publications in New York and for Vogue. His repertoire also includes ethnographic photographs (picture left) from around the world and portraits of creative personalities like Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso or Martha Graham.

 

HERB RITTS Herb Ritts (1952-2002) was an American fashion photographer who concentrated on black-and-white photography. He worked with magazines such as Vogue, Rolling Stone and Harper’s Bazaar on portraits of famous people and models. Very successfully he created advertising campaigns for Chanel, Gap, Giorgio Armani, Levi’s and others. In 1991 Ritts received an Infinity Award for Applied Photography from the International Center for Photography (ICP) in New York. 1996 to 1997 his work was displayed at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and in 2003 a solo exhibition was held at the Daimaru Museum, in Kyoto, Japan. One of his most famous works is „Fred with Tires“. Ritts also directed music videos like Madonna’s „Cherish“ or Michael Jackson’s „In the Closet“.

THOMAS RUFF The Photographer was born 1958 in Harmersbach, Germany and lives and works in Dusseldorf, Germany. Ruff studied photography from 1977 to 1985 in the class of Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (Düsseldorf Art Academy). During his studies he started to practice conceptual photography in series. His work has appeared in Documenta 9 (1992), the Venice Biennale (1995 and 2005), the Biennale of Sydney (1996), and the Bienal de São Paulo (2002). Ruff's work is held in the collections of many museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; The Art Institute of Chicago; National Museum of Photography, Copenhagen; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.

 

ANDY WARHOL Andy Warhol was born 1927 in Pittsburgh and died in 1987 in New York City, USA. He was and still is a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. After a successful career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol became a renowned and sometimes controversial artist. Warhol's art encompassed many forms of media, including hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, silk screening, sculpture, film, and music. He was also a pioneer in computer-generated art using Amiga computers that were introduced in 1984, two years before his death. Some of his important works are Campbell's Soup (1962),Marilyn (1964), Mao (1972) or the Dollar Sign (1982). He is also in a lot of Collections like the Metropolitan Museum, MoMA - Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Tate Modern, The J. MICHEL COMTE

Michel Comte was born in Switzerland in 1952. The professionally trained art restorer approached photography autodidactically.1979 Comte received his first international advertising assignment from Karl Lagerfeld for the fashion house of Chloe. Within a few years, Michel Comte evolves to one of the most sought-after fashion and magazine photographers in the world. He portrays numerous celebrities from the world of art, movies and entertainment, ranking from Julian Schnabel to Demi Moore and Michael Schumacher for Vanity Fair and Vogue. One of his most known works is the photography of the former model Carla Bruni (picture above).

 

JULIE BLACKMON

The artist was born in 1966 in Springfield, Missouri where she still lives. She studied art at Missouri State University. Her work is inspired by her role of a mother and the everyday life of her family. Her art is both fictional and auto-biographical, and reflects not only our lives today and as children growing up in a large family, but also moves beyond the documentary to explore the fantastic elements of our everyday lives, both imagined and real. The resulting photographs of family life appear at once disorderly and playful, and at times impossible. Blackmon won a lot of Awards worldwide and is collected e.g. by Angelina Jolie or Elton John or represented by famous museums like The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX or the George Eastman House, Rochester, NY. SONJA BRAAS

She was born in 1968 in Siegen, Germany and lives in New York, USA. The visual aesthetic of Sonja Braas is one of dazzling paradox. In 1995 she studied major photography at the School of Visual Arts , New York. The images look artificial, for they are only partially based on actual nature and landscape photographs. Many of the images are of models built by the artist, and this lends them a characteristically uncanny atmosphere.

  GEORG GERSTER

Georg Gerster, born 1927 in Winterthur, Switzerland, is a pioneer areal photographer and journalist. From 1950 to 1956 he was science editor of the Zurich Weltwoche. Since 1956 he has been a freelance journalist specialized in science reporting and aerial photography. He has undertaken extensive visits to every part of the world, including Antarctica. For two decades Georg Gerster’s aerial photographs for Swissair’s posters and calendars had contributed substantially to the airline's image. Gerster works on a regular basis e.g. for National Geographic. His photographs are not only technical masterpieces and precise documents, but also offer special beauty in their presentation of the world. He is concerned with the preservation of the Earth. In 1976 he was honoured with the Prix Nadar. His works were published in: Flights of discovery: The Earth from above, Paddington Press Ltd. (1978) and Paradise Lost: Persia from Above, Phaidon, 2009.
