thefromdowntownbutalsolikestoplaydefensejustashard.Martin,afootshorterat5’4”,isquickoffthedribbleandlikestodriveto
thehoop.However,ontheinsidetheyshareatleastonecharacteristic..theloveof
basketball.ForbothHollimonandMartin,theirdaysaresimple.“Gotoclass.Play
basketball.Eat.Sleep.”And that’swhat the freshmanduo isdoing tohelpprovide thewinning
formulafortheTigerandLadyTigerbasketballteams.Hollimoncomesfromthebasketball-richMemphisMelrosearea,while
MartinsuitedupasaLadyConquistadorforOliveBranchHighSchooldur-ingherprepseason.
Bothhelped topropel their respective teams todominanceduring theirfinal varsity year with Hollimon leadingMelrose to a 37-4 and a state champion-ship. Martin led the LadyConquistadorsto20winsherfinalyearandfollowedherfamilytoNortheast.
Now, both are lending their basketballtalents to Ricky Ford’s Lady Tigers andDavidRobbins’Tigers, and have found ahome in the friendly confines of BonnerArnoldColiseum.
During the early part of the season,MartinhelpedleadtheLadyTigerstoa5-5overallmarkanda1-1recordintheNorthDivision entering the holiday break, butithasbeenathomewhereMartinandtheLadyTigershavefoundsuccess.
BeforeChristmas,Martin and theLadyTigerswent 4-1 at the friendlyconfinesofBonnerArnoldColiseum,whileHollimon’screwwasjustonewinoffthatrecordwhenheandtheTigersposteda3-2markathomeduringthe2010portionoftheschedule.
BonnerArnoldColiseumhasbecomea secondhome forHollimonandMartinaseachhasspentmorethantheirfairshareoftimeinthelegendarybuilding.
Fromathleticcompetitionstopractice,HollimonandMartincanroutinelybefoundperfectingtheirgamesinthespaciousgymnasium.
“Ihavetopracticehard,takemytimeandmakegooddecisions,”Martin
said.“Tobeagoodshooteryouhavetoconstantlyworkonit,”Hollimonsaid.
“Youhavetoworkoniteveryday…andmakesureyoufollow-througheachtime.”
ForHollimon, there has been an adjustment to the speed of the game.Martin,ontheotherhandhashadtogetusedtothestyleofthecollegegame.
“It isadifferentpace,”Hollimonsaid.“Youhave to think three-to-fourstepsaheadandbeprepared.”
“Thespeed,thecompetitionisalldifferent,”Martinsaid.“Theshotclockmostly.”
However, as both gain experience in the competitiveMississippiAsso-ciationofCommunityand JuniorColleges (MACJC)NorthDivision, theirrespectiveindividualtalentsadjustthemselvestothegameathand.
Hollimonbelievesdefenseisthekeytoagoodoffenseandhasformedhisgamearoundwhattheopposingdefenseisdoingtostophim.
“It is reallybasedonhow thedefenseisplaying,”Hollimonsaid.“Eitherpullupandtakeaquickshotoruseexperienceandtechnique.”
While Hollimon is still trying to readan opponent’s defense on the move, it isthefreshman’sowndefensethathasledtopointsfortheTigers.
“Wehavetoplaydefense.Defensewinschampionships.”Hollimon said. “Defenseturns intooffense.Defense is abighonortome.”
Martin wants to show the league thatshe is more than just a 5-4 guard. ThefreshmanfromOliveBranchwantstobealeaderonthefloorandthinksthatwithexperience,theleadershipcapabilitiesneededtoguidetheLadyTigerswillcome.
“IwanttotheleadtheteaminagooddirectionandshowthemIwanttobealeader,”Martinsaid.“Iwanttobeabetterpointguardanddefensiveplayer.”
WhileleadingtheLadyTigersissomethingMartinwouldliketoaccom-plish,shehasalreadyaccomplishedsomethingherfamilywantedhertodo.
“Mymomanddadwenttothisschool,”Martinsaid.“IhavealotoffamilydownheresoIfiguredIwouldgiveitatry.”
ButwhilemomanddadwenttoNortheastforMartin,Hollimonsummeduptheschedulefortheduo,“Gotoclass.Playbasketball.Eat.Sleep.”
