Letter from the President
Hello Ladies!
Spring is here, plants are blooming, businesses and facilities are re-
opening, which is good news for us!
The Retreat is on. We are holding the Retreat in May this year, thanks
to Ginny Dodd, allowing more time for members who wish to attend to
become vaccinated. Participants always enjoy gathering and sewing
with old and new friends. It will be especially sweet this year!
We are still hoping to hold Spring Lecture later this year. We are look-
ing at an outdoor pavilion, so members will feel comfortable attending.
As details are finalized, you will be informed.
Each Spring, we vote for new GHQG and Chapter officers. Please con-
sider volunteering to help steer your Chapter’s future. Ballots for the
Executive Board Members have been collected and will be compiled at
the May Steering Committee Meeting. The winners will be announced
shortly.
GHQG will be collecting dues this year. If you are an Independent
member, the renewal form is in this Basting Lines. If you are a member
of a Chapter, your Membership chair will be collecting your dues.
Please make sure all your information is correct, so you will continue to
receive emails, Basting Lines, and access to Groupworks. We will not
automatically issue new membership cards, as they are no longer hon-
ored for discounts in most places. However, they will be available in the
fall at Spring Lecture, or upon request, if you would like one.
GHQG now has its own Zoom account. The email address and pass-
word have been given to the chapter Presidents. Now, chapters can
host their own zoom meeting if they are not yet meeting in person.
When chapter meetings are held in person, there is the option of using
zoom for those members who cannot attend.

Zoom is also a way for members to connect socially, without be-
ing physically present. For example, you can attend a sew-in
while remaining in your home where your tools are (no lugging of
machines, forgetting items, etc.) while you visit with fellow
GHQG members. Or you can attend a planning meeting without
having to travel. Since only one zoom meeting can be held at a
time, there is a calendar to keep track.
Finally, I wish to take this opportunity to thank the GHQG Execu-
tive Board members and Steering Reps that I have served with
these past six years. I appreciate your support, as well as the
contributions you make to the Guild. It has been my pleasure to
serve you and all GHQG members.

Ellington Country Quilters, cont’d
We will install new Officers and say farewell to outgoing Officers. Members will participate in a Program Planning session for 2021-2022. We hope to be outdoors for this meeting, weather permitting. Location is TBD. We will continue Zoom, even when outdoors, to accommodate all members.
Enfield Quilters Maureen MacDonald
Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month
at the Hazardville United Methodist Church, 330
Hazard Ave, Enfield, at 7pm with social time begin-
ning at 6:30pm. No meetings are held if schools are
closed due to bad weather.
Enfield met for the first time last month with a program showing off our antique notions and quilts. Pictures in Bits and Brags.
Friendship Quilters of Windsor
Elissa Dunn
We usually meet at 6:30pm on the 2nd Thursday of
the month, however, no “face to face” meetings are
planned at this time. We are meeting monthly on
Zoom.
Ongoing projects include making tote bags to be given to patients at infusion centers, quilts for clients of social service providers, shelters, etc. and patriotic table runners for Windsor families who have deployed family members. We also make “Friendship”quilts for our members who are incapacitated or bereaved.
During our meetings, we had two projects. One was a table runner challenge made from a “Pop star” pattern and the second was a mystery which became a star block made from our scraps. We are doing a block of the month and we made a quilt commemorating the 40th anni-versary of Northwest Park. Our members made paper pieced animal blocks and trees which were assembled into a spectacular quilt which will be raffled by the Park in order to raise money to support their programs. See the quilt in Bits and Brags. Quilting was done by Sharon Kozaczka.
Apple Valley Quilters
Rose Unwin
AVQ meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from Sep-
tember through May, 7-9pm, currently via Zoom. Guests
are welcome at our meetings. There is a $5 non-member
fee if we have a paid lecturer.

Berlin Sisters in Quilting
Vreni Breakell-Caudle
Meetings are held at 6:30pm on the first Tuesday of each
month at a location to be determined. Guests and new
members are always welcome. Come check us out!
Berlin has begun meeting in a member’s yard now
that the weather is cooperating. We’ve been working
on our challenge “Think Inside the Box”. We were
each given a 12”x6”x6” box containing a fat quarter of
fabric. This challenge fabric must be contained in a
final quilted object that will fit back into the box to
qualify. It can be anything quilted as long as it fits.
Our reveal will be in June. Many members are also
working on the Guild challenge of a quilt with a chil-
dren’s book.
Ellington Country Quilters
Micheline Bissell
Meetings are (usually) held on the 3rd Thursday of each month. We are meeting via ZOOM until further notice. Guests and new members are welcome. Please send Micheline an email if you wish to attend our Zoom. Show and Tell will be held every month.
May 20: We will vote on the budget and elect Of-ficers for the upcoming year. We hope to be out-doors for this meeting, weather permitting. Pro-gram and location TBD.
Jun 17: All challenges, UFO (Un Finished Ob-jects), KIT (Keep It Trucking), and Jelly Roll are due and should be ready for Show and Tell.

Heritage Quilters
Janette Steward
Please note we have changed our meeting location to the
Wallingford Parks and Recreation, 6 Fairfield Blvd, in Wall-
ingford. Meetings are held from 6:30 to 8:30pm on the
fourth Tuesday of the month. There is no meeting in De-
cember.
Due to the surge in Covid-19 our meetings are on hold.
We will post in GroupWorks once we begin meeting
again - or if we have zoom meetings.
Quilters West
Valerie Bonee
Meetings are being held via Zoom until further notice. We
meet on the Third Wednesday of the month. At this time we
are having Zoom sew-ins twice a month.
May 19: Dianne Georantas and Linda Jacobson,
Quilters West members, will have a hands-on demo
and show of hexies made with the Wendt ruler. Mem-
bers can cut a 2 1/2” strip and create hexies on the
eve of the super moon during our Zoom meeting.
Jun 16: We hope we’ll be all able to get together for a
potluck dinner.
Stafford Mill Town Quilters
Nancy Schwanda
Stafford Mill Town quilters plans to meet both physically
(weather permitting) and virtually through 2020—2021.
Saturday open sews, usually held on the third Saturday
of the month at the Stafford Fire House, Willington Ave,
Stafford, have also been suspended until further notice.
SMTQ has continued to meet on Zoom. With warmer
weather around the corner, we hope to soon be able
to meet in person outside the library. Judging of chal-
lenges for Think Irish, quilt book and bookmark swap,
fabric wreathe, apron fashion show, 20/20, and Wood-
stock 50 will take place when we can physically meet.
Meanwhile, members Jenn DeFosche has shared rag
rug making and Jeanne Dumphy has lead us in a mys-
tery bag challenge.
Vernon Nutmeg Quilters
We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at the
First Congregational Church at 695 Hartford Turnpike in
Vernon. We are an active group that enjoys Saturday
Sews as well as 2-day Mini Retreats. Guests and new
Newington Schoolhouse Quilters
Judy Van Blarcom
Newington meets on the 2nd Monday of the month (except
October, when we meet on the 3rd Monday) at the Senior
Center in Newington. Meetings start at 6:30pm. All are wel-
come to attend and join the group. We always welcome new
members and guests
We are not meeting until the weather allows outdoor
gatherings.
West Hartford Quilters
Judy Holcomb
Meetings are held at 6:30pm on the 1st Wednesday of the month. We have a new meeting time and place. Meetings will be held at St. Brigid’s Church on New Britain Avenue in Elmwood. Park at CVS across the street or in the church driveway.

Happy Spring! We have been meeting on Zoom, but now that the weather is getting better and the sun is setting later, we are just about ready to start meeting at Henry Park on meeting night again. Weather permitting, we will begin in May.
We have a retreat planned for November at Camp Hazen and are looking forward to hosting Annual Gathering in 2022. We can’t wait to resume our preparations.

Covid protocol
GHQG Spring Retreat –May 20-23, 2021
INcarnation Center
Hi all. We’re all feeling antsy about getting back to ‘normal’ life. The GHQG Executive board talked it over and we think we can manage a retreat with some Covid modifications.
• The staff are restricted from outside contacts.
• The staff have a disinfection procedure before entering the kitchen.
• The staff wear masks and face shields while preparing food.
• Meals are packed up “to go”
• Meals may be eaten in a spaced out dining room, at your work station, or in your room, or picnic outside. (social eating is one of the highest risk activities)
•
• YOu must have received at least one vaccine
• You must wear a face mask while walking around for everyone’s safety . (even with the vaccine, you can still carry and transmit the virus). Personally I will also wear a face shield.
For sewing you will be spaced 8 feet apart, one person per table.
• If you are sick or exposed you will stay away ( a refund will be given)
• No one will have a roommate.
Carpooling is discouraged. Even for shopping trips.
• This will be a ‘no frills’ retreat
No Vendor
No massage
No ice cream social
No marshmallow roast.
• We will have ‘door prizes’ with a different distribution system.
We will have a retreat quilt project with verbal and written directions. I can even Zoom the directions for those who want to but are really nervous about attending. The quilt is featured on “Missouri Star” . It is the “Good Fortune” tutorial, which you could make on your own, but I will be able to be more flexible and available for de-tails.

GHQG Quilt Retreat
Incarnation Center, Ivoryton.
Come and join us for 4 days of sewing with all your friends in GHQG. Thursday afternoon, Friday, Saturday, and until Sunday after-noon 2PM including all meals starting with dinner on Thursday and with full breakfast Fri, Sat, & Sun and Lunch on Sunday as part of your registration. Incarnation center is in a peaceful wooded setting, with walking trails to and around the lake. Rooms are dormitory style with singles, doubles and a couple of triples with full remodeled bathroom facilities down the hall. Handicap accessible.
There are limited spaces available so register soon. Registration Deadline May 6th
This year, due to Covid restrictions, we can have up to 25 quilters in Lodge, and 12 quilters in Brooks if enough people sign up. For
everyone’s peace of mind, please register only if you plan to have at least one vaccination shot by May 6th. Please read the Covid protocol.

This year's challenge is to make a quilt, of any size, based on a child’s book. Purchase a child’s book and then make a quilt or wall hanging based upon the book. The quilts and books together will be donated to Prudence Crandall in New Britain and My Sisters Place in Hartford. Both organizations work with families. I have donated to both these organizations in the past and they were very appreciative of the donation. If you have other organizations that you know would benefit from these quilts please let me know and I will bring the suggestion to the executive board. The quilt and book are due at the May meeting. If we are able to meet in person please give the quilt and book to your group’s Steering Rep. If we do not have an in-person meeting I will make arrangements for drop off points. Zoom Sampler Weekend
Many of you may have attended the virtual “Meet the Teachers” events held via Zoom by the Global Quilt
Connection. The Connection has offered quilters everywhere a chance to sample a bit more of what a
Zoom lecture/demo would look like in real time. On Saturday and Sunday, May 22 and 23, from 3:00pm to
6:00pm, there will be 9 instructors each afternoon giving a 15 minute lecture/demo on a skill or technique
that might be interesting to learn. The Greater Hartford Quilt Guild has paid for all of our members to attend
these two days of instructions. A couple of days before the event, an email will be sent to all Guild mem-
bers with a link to the Zoom meeting. All you need to do to attend is to download Zoom onto your computer
and then click the link. We are aware that this weekend coincides with the retreat, so Ginny Dodd is con-
tacting the Incarnation Center and will try to ensure that anyone who wants to watch, can do so on their
TVs. I will be putting together a quick “cheat sheet” for anyone who has never used Zoom and who would
like to attend, but feels uncomfortable. In addition, the week before, we will receive a .pdf file that outlines
the list of instructors along with the topics of their talk. This should allow you to pick and choose if you like.
