THE CRUZE CHRONOLOGY By KALEA HALL | [email protected] LORDSTOWN “I have had a chance to see it, and it is amazing,” said Glenn Johnson, presi- dent of the United Auto Workers Local 1112. “The buying public will be very pleased with the next-gen- eration Chevy Cruze,” The world will see the next-generation Cruze on Wednesday at a global unveiling in Detroit. The Vindicator will report live from the Motor City. Its predecessor, GM’s best-selling car, hit suc- cess after success to make its presence known in the auto world and the com- pact-car segment. The plan for its successor is to build off the momen- tum and continue to keep things rolling in the right direction. “The Cruze was a vast leap ahead of the previous economy car, the Cobalt,” said Karl Brauer, Kelley Blue Book senior ana- I t’s been said you be- come the best by learn- ing from the best. Davis was living with his wife and baby daugh- ter in base housing while on Air Force assignment to support a no-fly zone. “There was a fuel pipe- line that ran pretty much under our cul-de-sac, and there was a terrorist group that set a time bomb on it to detonate that would have certainly killed my wife and baby girl,” Davis remembered. Fortunately, U.S. mili- tary personnel discovered the bomb and found that it wasn’t rigged properly to explode, Davis said. “We’re a Christian fam- ily, and I just thank God for that protection [and] Brent Davis, cen- ter, stands outside his Austintown home with his 19-year- old son, Justin, and his wife, Sonya. LEWIS THE VINDICATOR By ED RUNYAN [email protected] WARREN Now that the Ohio Senate has approved its version of the next two-year state budget, nine days remain for legislators to iron out the remaining details before final approval by June 30. Among the biggest headlines have been cuts in the income- tax rate and taxes to small busi- nesses. But of more concern to some local government officials are measures that cut funding to townships and other government bodies though a tax that the state started phasing out 10 years ago and plans to resume phasing out during the next two fiscal years, starting next month. A month ago, Larry Moliterno, a Boardman Township trust- ee, traveled to Columbus to ad- dress a commit- tee of the Ohio Senate about the $576,000 the township cur- rently receives through a pro- gram called TPP. Howland Police Chief Paul Mon- roe also testified. The full name is tangible personal property tax, a tax that companies used to pay in Ohio to the school districts and local governments in which they were located, but the state elimi- nated it in 2005 to promote busi- ness growth. Through 2010, the state said it would reimburse the schools and local governments for their lost tax revenue.
