    BBSI was founded in 1992 and occupies 3 prominent and adjoining Victorian buildings located in the centre ofBournemouth, a beautiful seaside resort on the south coast of England. Our primary aim is to deliver a wide variety of high-quality study programmes for international students and to optimise their learning experience in the UK.

    English Language TrainingBBSI offers English courses of the highest quality year round at differentlanguage levels. Students can also study for and undertake the IELTSexamination and a wide range of Cambridge ESOL English examinations.

    Business & Professional TrainingWe offer an extensive variety of study programmes all year round in popularsubjects from certificate to diploma level. All courses include extensive andsupportive English-language elements, and provide students with the opportunityto acquire valuable academic and professional qualifications.

    Summer CoursesDuring the summer months, July-September, BBSI offers short courses ofbetween one and 12 weeks duration. In addition to English, participants canstudy popular business or specialised subjects and prepare for and obtain arange of useful qualifications.

    UK University Placement ServiceBBSI University Foundation and Pre-Masters courses include a comprehensive University Placement Service to top universities inthe UK. Provided students obtain the necessary grades, they are assured of their university place prior to completion of their course.

    Academic FacilitiesBBSI comprises 31 well-equipped classrooms withDVD/VCR/CD, inter-active whiteboards and PowerPointprojector equipment. Schoolcapacity is around 350 students.Facilities include 2 fully-networked IT Multi-MediaCentres, and Wi-Fi high-speedBroadband access throughoutthe premises provides real-timeaccess to the Internet, as wellas e-mail facilities. There isa student common roomwith satellite televisionand refreshment facilities.In addition, BBSI has areference library, a gardenand patio area for relaxation,and parking areas for bicycles.

    Sports, Leisure & RecreationBBSI offers a comprehensive selection of leisure, sports and social activities, both during the day

    and in the evenings. In planning such activities, the School takes full account of the cultural differencesbetween life in England and in students' home countries. In satisfying this requirement, staff consider,

    among other factors, cultural background, lifestyles and religious faith. Activities include:

The surrounding countryside is some of the most beautiful in England and the relaxed,friendly and personal atmosphere at BBSI provides a central facility where students can base both theacademic and social structures of their lives.

    BournemouthBournemouth is a holiday town with a reputation for being sophisticated and vibrant. The town is a regional centre for commerce, with itsown university, and is a unique and popular place in which to live and study throughout the year. There isa vibrant nightlife with a wide range of quality entertainment, including cinemas, concerts,theatres, night clubs, bars and restaurants. Our shops cater for all tastes. Bournemouth isalso famous for its 7 miles of sandy beaches, beautiful parks and gardens, and itscosmopolitan atmosphere. There is also easy access to many regional cultural attractions.Bournemouth International Airport has daily flights to numerous UK and Europeandestinations and there are daily sea ferries from Poole to France,Spain and the Channel Islands.

    Surrounding AreaThe beautiful coastal area to the eastand west of Bournemouth is adesignated World Heritage Site. To thewest of Bournemouth lies the ancientport of Poole, situated within a vastnatural harbour. Poole provides access towildlife, deserted islands and beautifullandscapes. It is also one of the busiestand most exciting places in the UK topractise water sports. To the east liesChristchurch, in a picturesque setting at the estuaries of 2 rivers. The town has acharming medieval atmosphere and is dominated by its ancient priory.

    Travel DetailsBournemouth is less than 2 hours travelling time from London by coach, train or car. On their first morning at BBSI, students arewelcomed to the School and are provided with an appreciation of local services and amenities. Transport facilities are explained,including those bus routes between BBSI and the residential areas where our host families are located. Most bus journeysin and around Bournemouth take between 10 and 20 minutes.

    While you study in Bournemouth, it is important that you are comfortable in your domestic environment and that youmix with as many native speakers of English as possible and absorb the local culture in your everyday activities. BBSItherefore offers various accommodation options to suit your personal requirements, including homestay, hotel and guesthouse accommodation and residential facilities.

    AccommodationA popular tourist resort, Bournemouth offers a wide choice of accommodation. BBSI selects only quality accommodation thatcomplies with the English UK Homestay Charter and Accreditation UK Guidelines.

    Standard HomestayOne of the best ways to 'acquire' the English language outside the classroom and to experience British culture is to live with aBritish family. BBSI homestay accommodation includes a comfortable single study/bedroom, and is available on a part-board basis(breakfast and evening meal Monday-Friday, with full-board facilities (all meals) at weekends); on a bed and breakfast basis; or on

    a self-catering basis. Our host families are located close to the Schooland are inspected regularly to ensure that the highest standards ofaccommodation and care are continually met and maintained.

    Executive HomestayThe executive homestay option provides accommodation in a high-quality home in an exclusive residential area, with study/bedrooms ofabove-average size and with en-suite/private bathroom facilities.Moreover, many of our executive rooms have television and Internetconnection included. Accommodation is available on a part-board basis(breakfast and evening meals Monday-Friday, with full-board facilities(all meals) at weekends), on a bed and breakfast basis or on a self-catering basis. Our families are located close to the School and areinspected regularly to ensure that the highest standards ofaccommodation and care are continually met and maintained.

    ResidentialBBSI can organise residential accommodation on a self-catering, roomonly, or a bed and breakfast basis. Fees will vary according to locationand room type.

    Guest Houses & HotelsBBSI can recommend several small, friendly guest houses and hotels close to our premises that would suit all budgets. You can choosea room with or without a private bathroom, and breakfast is included. Dinner can also be provided on request.

    Welfare FacilitiesBBSI staff have developed a unique understanding of international students and werecognise that individuals have widely different welfare and cultural needs. Ourpolicy is to provide and maintain a safe and healthy environment for study.Welfare staff are on hand throughout normal School opening hours andemergency staff are contactable at weekends and overnight.

    SUMMARY

    Students at BBSI are encouraged to take responsibility for their own development. Self-motivation is encouraged,which engenders rapid progress in professional skills and the acquisition of accurate and fluent English. Ourtraining methods are functional and practical, and we offer a correct balance in emphasis between trainingethos and social atmosphere.

    We employ a wide range of effective teaching methods to suit different types of learner. Interactive techniques stimulate interest,inspire motivation, increase the efficiency of the learning process and achieve the highest possible levels of retention. Our aim is tomake the UK learning experience as enjoyable as possible. Each of our courses contains some or all of the following elements:

    * English-language development and skills practice * functional, everyday social and professional communication skills* individual study skills development * specialised academic and professional training* preparation for academic or professional examinations * computing and IT training

    The maximum class size is 12 participants; albeit BBSI reserves the right to increase the number to15 during peak periods.

    Academic Coordination. Our academic management standards are extremely high. All trainingprogrammes are supervised personally by the Director of Studies. In addition, students areallocated a personal tutor who is responsible for the following:

    * coordination of students' work with other teachers * marking and assessing assignments* supervision of individual academic progress * monitoring of attendance and performance* regular, individual consultation with students * liaison with administrative and welfare staff* coordination of academic reports

    Academic Staff. BBSI employs full-time tutors, part-time tutors and freelance specialist trainers. All tutors are professionallyqualified with either a degree, or a diploma or certificate qualification in ELT. Tutors undergo regular continuation training anddevelopment.

    School Timetable. Study periods comprise blocks of 2, forty-five minutelessons at set periods throughout the day. In addition, students are expected tooptimise their learning experience by utilising the extensive BBSI extra-curricular IT and multi-media facilities. Personal tutors are available daily forindividual consultation.

    Assessment & Grading

    To assess academic progress accurately and fairly, BBSI employs a system ofcontinuous assessment that has been developed as a rigorous alternative to aformal examination system, and is designed both to support study and tocontribute to the motivation of students. Assignments are set regularly toassess the achievement of learning outcomes. These assignments may be in the form of written essays, reports, or case studies;progress tests; research and analysis projects; preparation and delivery of presentations; business simulations; or portfolio work.

    To ensure grading is consistent and fair, careful guidelines are set and internal verification is standard procedure to meet rigorousquality-management requirements. All work is assessed on the basis of the quality of its presentation, content and language.The following are also taken into account: general ability and performance, assimilation, participation and motivation,punctuality and attendance, and overall academic progress. Grading criteria are shown in the table below.

    FCE is an Upper-Intermediate level examination that indicates sufficient proficiency inEnglish to be of practical use in clerical, secretarial and managerial jobs for example, or inthe tourist industry, where contact with English speakers is required. FCE is also usefulpreparation for students working towards higher-level examinations, such as the CAE.

    CAE (Certificate in Advanced English)

    CAE is the second-highest level of Cambridge ESOL examination and is ideal for thosewho want to work or study abroad. A CAE certificate demonstrates language skills in a wide range of contexts. The examination is based on realistic tasks, and indicates theability to use the language in practical situations, such as meetings and discussions.

    BEC (Business English Certificate)

    University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations

    FCE (First Certificate in English)FCE is an Upper-Intermediate level examination that indicates sufficient proficiency in

    English to be of practical use in clerical, secretarial and managerial jobs for example, or in thetourist industry, where contact with English speakers is required. FCE is also useful preparation for

    students working towards higher-level examinations, such as the CAE.

    CAE (Certificate in Advanced English)CAE is the second-highest level of Cambridge ESOL examination and is ideal for those

    who want to work or study abroad. A CAE certificate demonstrates language skills in a widerange of contexts. The examination is based on realistic tasks, and indicates the ability to

    use the language in practical situations, such as meetings and discussions.

    BEC (Business English Certificate)There are 3 levels of BEC examination: the BEC Preliminary, BEC Vantage and BEC

    Higher. All 3 examinations are ideal for students preparing for careers in the fields of internationalbusiness and commerce, where a good knowledge of English is required to function

    effectively. BEC certificates are internationally recognised and demonstrate that the holder has acquired an appropriate standard of English

    in a professional context.
