Running track project
breaks ground
St. James-Assiniboia School Division began construction on its new
running track and soccer field project at St. James Collegiate in
August.
The division received official approval for the $500,000 project from
the City of Winnipegs Board of Adjustment on Aug. 9. Board
officials negotiated a land lease agreement with the city for the
section of the project that encroaches on Bourkevale Community
Centre land.
And the division also obtained the appropriate letters of authorization
and permits over the past few months to finalize the deal. The schoold board is very pleased that construction of the new track
and soccer field will soon be started, board Chairman Bruce Chegus
told the Bourkevale Bulletin. It has been a collaborative effort by all
concerned to move the project forward to this point it will be great
to have it completed for the students and the community to use and
enjoy.
The project includes a regulation-size running track and a crowned,
full-sized soccer field, both of which will be accessible to the general
public.
The running track will allow the school to start a track program and
hold official meets, while the soccer pitch will provide local clubs
with a new, state-of-the-art field.
As part of the agreement, the division has also agreed to construct
Bourkevale a soccer field on community centre land.
Bourkevale residents voted overwhelmingly in favour of the project
in a community vote held in February.
Completion of the project will depend on the contractor and the
weather over the next two months. But school board officials say
theyre hopeful it will be completed in the fall.

Canteen-skate room expands hour
of operation
Carolers brighten up skate room in December, 2011
One of Bourkevales goals is to have the club open as many hours of
the week as possible. We do that in various ways, including throughprograms the club runs and through special events organized by club
volunteers.
Our skate room is one area of the club thats open the most frequently
And weve continued to expand its hours of operation over the past
few years.
In addition to being open during the winter months, the skate room is
now accessible in the spring and fall during weekday evenings. We
opened it during those hours primarily for our soccer teams, which
play Monday to Thursday. But its also open to the public for general
use and for washroom accessibility. We even added an air hockeygame to the room this year. So come down for a drink and a snack.
Check out our hours of operation below.
Club gets new ice

Presidents ReportHello and I hope everybody is enjoying the late summer heat. I know my garden is finally producing the
way it should. Our club, thanks to the hard work of our volunteers, has stayed on course on its path of continuedimprovement. We have new kitchen counters, cabinets and paint. As you may have already seen, work habegun on the new soccer field north of the lawn bowling, which we negotiated in exchange for allowin
St. James School Board to expand their track on to 30 M of our land. Allowing the school division to
expand will also give our soccer program access to a new full size and irrigated soccer pitch in the center
of the track. The track work has also begun.
On top of having the best ice in the city and a great soccer program we have new programs this year such
as yoga on Tuesday nights and small dog night in the south rink. We are continuing to look at adding new
programs but need your help to facilitate this. If you know of a program or somebody that would like to r
a program at our club, please let us know.
While the club is healthy financially, there are problems. Since I have been president we have not had afull-time special events coordinator, thus most of the events have been run by the board on top of their
regular portfolios. This will now stop as it is too much. There will be no Halloween Howl, Xmas party or
pancake breakfast unless somebody steps up to run one of those events or all of them. Also as of print tim
there will be no silent auction at the Hoedown as nobody has stepped up to run it.
We also need help at soccer convener and treasurer!!!
This club has been successful because of the efforts of people stepping up to help out. And unless there is
more help, your kids will miss the above mentioned events and the 2014 Hoedown. So please raise your
hand and help out.
This is not an idle threat but a reality if people do not step up to help our club out.
