Summer Is Over...by Craig Smith, Commodore

Or so the calendar says, but I’m not convinced. Howeverthat means that the Fall activities are cranking up, or running. Sail School probably could use your help;

Oktoberfest is coming, Officer and Board elections, Halloween,Thanksgiving, and Christmas boat parade are all right around thecorner. This means that you need to be here and not let me haveall the fun.

Joel Heyne and Doug Fuller have just about nailed down a newlease for us, taking BCYC into the year 2020. Good job andthank you very much.

The new Catalina 16.5’s have yet to arrive, but I have beenassured that they are really coming.

Nominations for Life Member are due, so if you know someoneyou feel that deserves that honor, please get me the written nomination soon. Short column this month, so until next time…..

A Note From The Editorby Jennifer Travis & Tim Stark, Windword Editors

September was a busy month for us.We started it off by participating in our first ever raft-up.What great fun! Wejoined our good friends Mike and Dawn aboard the Layla.

We were all sunburned beyond recognition, but no one seemedto notice after consuming numerous rum soaked pineapples.

Many thanks to Tom Hurley of BiPlane Rides for taking the arialphotos of the raft up. He did a beautiful job. His photos can bepurchased by calling him at 727-895-6266.

We have so appreciated how everyone has helped us make thisissue even better than the last. Please feel free to contact us withyour suggestions, advertising and contributions to the Windword.View a full color version of the newsletter online at www.sailbcyc.com.

While in Nassau, Roy Young and Bill Casey were walking upthe office of the marina when a fellow stopped us to talkto us. He noticed Roy was wearing a BCYC t-shirt and

asked us who we were. It turns out to be a good member that hasnot been active for a few months, Greg and Terri Pentek, they havenot been to the club in a while but are still active members andenjoying sailing their nice new boat, Priority. It was a shame we gotto meet them when were about to leave Nassau, but did enjoy anevening. Hordes with other boats as well. It was a lot of fun and hopeto seem them back at the club soon to share some of their picturesand stories of their sailing voyage.

Yes folks, it’s not too earlyto start thinking aboutgoing on this years

We areplanning to go for the entireweek, probably South to theBoca Grande area. But we had agreat week up in the TarponSprings, Dunedin, and Caladisiarea, so that is still a possibility. If you have never gone on alonger cruise, this is good one tostart on, with the safety of agroup going with you. New Zealand Wins America’sCup at BCYC

by Jean & Jeff Grossman

With ten countries competing in four events the New Zealandteam, led by Tom & Ruth Hicks, Andy Bell and Najla Kassis, managed to amass the highest overall score of 31 points.

Though they did not win any of the individual events, consistent finishes near the top in each event gave them the win overSwitzerland (29 points).

The evening opened with the Knot Tying contest with teams beingtimed on how fast they could tie a bowline, square knot and figure 8.The Swiss team lead by Tony Angel won completing all three knots injust 11 seconds.

As the international dinner was being inhaled by the competitors theAmerica’s Cup Trivia contest was held with ten hard questions posed.Team USA led by Steve Honour, and Mark Rother won this event bygetting nine of the ten correct!

After dinner the third event, Dicey Racing, was staged with represen-tatives from each table, er, country, lining up on the race course.Thedice were fair and the competition close, but after three heats, SouthAfrica just managed to pass New Zealand at the end for the win.

The final and most exciting event of the evening was the Blow Boatcompetition. Each team representative was handed a straw and challenged to blow their boat around the race course in a match race.A tote board kept track of the races and after a dozen races the finalscame down to USA and England. The three race Finals were held withEngland winning the first race, USA the second, and England taking theEvent by winning the third and final race!

Congratulations to all of the competitors and we hope the winningteams enjoy their prizes of wine, chocolate and T-Shirts!

The best laid plans of mice and men..." I'mnot well read enough to actually knowwhere that phrase came from but it sure as

hell fits the situation. I remember telling othersthat the previous sailing school was lacking in"true management." It could only be called "con-trolled chaos." So I applied true management: "Thecoordination of men, money, machines and materi-als to achieve the desired result within a specifiedbudget and time frame." The end result of myapplication of "true management," was ........., "con-trolled chaos." Yes, I am apologetic and chagrinedbut thank the power that controls the universe, our energetic and committed members have againstepped up to adjust as required to the uncooper-ative weather requiring make up days, the changing

cruise dates and cruise locations, an uncooperativesound and video system, the new boats that mayvery well be on their way here through thePanama Canal, the temporary failures of the hoistand safety boat, the postponed Wednesday NightSailout and every other change which is apparentlyjust another sailing school session to which somany club members apply their particular skills tomake a success. After a while, the expectation thatevery other day will bring a new surprise gets tobe, well, just another day.

You have some heroes here and you know whoyou are. It's all the sailing school volunteers, thenew members, we welcome your experience andskills and the old members, thanks for your dedi-cation and perseverance.

If you wanted to see some great boat captains atwork, you should have been here last Sundayafternoon when a thunder storm snuck up on usand six students had an exciting ride while Nigel,Barb and Marianne and the safety boat crew skill-fully brought them safely home.

In conclusion I think it's working.Thank y'all.Arewe having fun yet?

September’s workday was a gray one; theweather forecast prevented us from paintingthe deck, but we still accomplished quite a bit.

David Perillo fixed the broken bench on the deckand removed the non-working lights from the deckand the tree. Mike got the fluorescent light fixtures on the ceiling working, and along with Bob Calvillo and Ken Stone, replaced the noisy ceiling fan on the porch.

Sharon, Dave Malone, Nigel and Steve assembledthe dingy dollies. Pim Miranda and Paul Pittmanfought their way into the tool room and did a fantastic job cleaning it out and organizing it. Haveyou seen the office lately? Last week, Linda Raytook on the Herculean task of cleaning out all thejunk that had accumulated there and organizing thewhole office.

Bob Seamon assisted by Steve Stephenson and Bob Newcomb trimmed back all of the tree limbsthat had been brushing on the roof of the clubhouse. Our merchandise cabinet is secureagain thanks to a new hasp and lock installed byPhil Raia. Jack Green took on the much neededtask of cleaning out and organizing our first aid kit.Dave Tarbox worked on designing a new brick barbeque grill.

Judy and Ursula Raia tackled the mess that ourstore room had become and got things straightened up and organized. Bev Newcomb wasthis month’s “white tornado” in the kitchen. JoanCollins and C J Morris did a nice job cleaning upthe porch. While they were waiting for the weather to clear, the Sea Scouts cleaned all of thetable tops in the club house.

Dick Timothy, Randy Southerland Dave Perillo andRamon Torres led by Steve Butcher, screwed downall of the loose boards on the dock. Mike Collins,Jimmy Meyer John Meyer and Pepper Haywood

joined Barb Meyer in weeding, pruning and generally spiffing up the grounds. As I write this, I’ve noticed a recurring theme of“cleaning out and organizing”. Please honor theirwork by not leaving junk around in the tool room, store room, office, etc. Also, the area to the rightof our main entrance is not a dumping ground. Please do not leave discarded items there. Everyworkday we end up throwing half of this stuff inthe dumpster and taking the rest to Goodwill orotherwise disposing of it.

Thanks to everyone who participated in work day;the club house looks great. A special thanks to Jeffand Jean Grossman who sponsored Saturday night’scovered dish. The cornucopia of gastronomicaldelights was not to be missed. Everyone whocame had a great time participating in all of thecompetitions to win the America’s cup.that come closer. We have a committee to helpbatten down the clubhouse when a hurricanewarning is issued. The committee members are:Don Rogers and Gary Woodard. We could use acouple more members. If you would like to helpout, please give me a call or send me an E-mail.

I want to thank Craig Smith for filling in for me onWorkday. Under his direction club membersinstalled several ceiling fans on the patio on theeast side of the clubhouse. They also replaced thelandscaping 3 x 4’s and re-worked the pavers thatwere collapsing on the patio. The clubhouse wascleaned and the grounds were weeded andtrimmed. Thanks to everyone who came on thathot August day to help out.

Well we’ve just about made it through anotherlong excruciatingly hot summer, and I for one amlooking forward to going cruising this Fall.

News From The Desk of Your “Flag Officers”by George Freund and Tony Angel

Our ViceCommodore

Linda, and first man Keithwere swinging on the anchor outin the bay enjoying a pleasantbreeze when the sky becamedark and rain started to spitdown upon them. Linda askedhandy man Keith to shut the forward hatch so he scrambledforward to reach up and lowerthe lid. At that point the cloudmoved on and cheerful rays ofsun beamed down on the littlesolar fan in the hatch above ourman Keith. Now with Mr. Ray’sabundant hair style, wouldn’t youknow it... that little fan in thehatch pulled our man Keith offof the floor and into the intake. What a life you guys live on thehook!

I’vebeen away

from the club for acouple of months, but soon-

er or later all dumb things cometo my attention. Our Commodore,Craig Smith is the man who knowsall, about the repairs that need tobe made on every boat in the club.Ask him a question about boatmaintenance and he’ll go on forsome time on the subject.

If you need to replace your stanchions, life lines, running rigging, chain plates, or standingrigging, Craig is your man! So wasCraig running a life test on chainplates when his mast fell off of“Salt Walter” in the middle ofTampa Bay? It has been 24 yearssince a power boater held theprestigious office of Commodoreat Boca Ciega Yacht Club.Whatwill this amazing man do next?

Inthe excite-

ment of this yearsRaft-up one of our new

members usually entertainsus, and this year was not excep-tion! Harry Haigley was launch-ing his sail boat. He asked afriend to pull down the rampwhile directing the event.Theyfloated the boat and Harryhopped on board to take it tothe T-Dock while his friendpulled the trailer up the ramp.Did I say UP THE RAMP?Harry watched as the trailerand his Lexus glided gracefullyunderwater. They say that theLexus is one of the best builtcars in the world... but theydon’t sail very well!

Fortunately our Raft-Up chair-person, Barb heard the screamsand called faithful Jim, whojumped off of the inflatable hewas driving, and ran to get thatsuper truck he acquired whilehe was Treasurer. With 5-wheeldrive, and monster truck tireshe easily recovered the Lexusand it’s trailer from the deep.Well Mr. Haigley you are ingood company with your flagand you certainly entertainedus. To Jim Meyer goes the“Good Ship Lollypop” flag.

Over the past 4 or 5 years our club haschanged it's attitude and it's relationshipwith the community we reside in.There

has been a corresponding change of attitude by thecommunity and the City of Gulfport. This is good.

At BCYC most of us are no longer all about me!We are rapidly becoming more of a service organization, and the lease we hope to sign reflectsthis.

Boca Ciega Yacht Club's mission statement is :1. To promote safe boating activities in Pinellas

County and waters adjacent thereto.2. To promote instruction and education in safe

boating and all nautical activities.3. To foster fellowship and camaraderie among the

members.4. To be an integral part of the Community of

Gulfport.

Well --- that's pretty much why we went to workin 2006 to organize a new arm of our Not-for-Profit Boca Ciega Yacht Club Inc. Gulfport YouthSailing was incorporated February 7th, 2007 andwe immediately filed the forms to gain IRS recogni-tion as a NONPROFIT CORPORATION. It tookthe last 7 months to get Federal approval and thento gain State recognition of G.Y.S as a charitableorganization. This was done in record time but itseemed to take forever.

The reason we have done this is that we need tobe able to raise gifts, and donations, and charitablecontributions to do the work we should do for thenext generation of sailors.

With Gulfport Youth Sailing Inc., we can acceptboats, parts, materials, and in kind service that istax-deductible to the donor and tax-exemptincome for Gulfport Youth Sailing to support it'sservices. All donations must be carefully documented, butbelieve me it is worth the work. The Port Supplydiscount account we have to repair club boats, andthe $390.00 of Trinidad bottom paint that WestMarine gave our Scouts are just a small example ofhow this new nonprofit can help our programs. This is how a working man's sailing association canafford to sponsor the very expensive activity ofyouth sailing without a large charge to the kids.

When the core group of advisors shouldered theresponsibility and organized BCYC Sea Scout Ship915 we realized that venture Sea Scouting forTeens cost more per capita than any other divisionof Scouting. The need for small cruising sail boats, for slips, and for repairs demands the backing of acharity. This is not a sleeping bag, a pup tent and adad to drive them to camp and back like mostscout troupes. We're talking B.O.A.T.Fortunately, everything is coming together andunder the umbrella of our new corporate statusthe youth programs flourish. There is little questionthat over the next year our BCYC Board willreview other activities to see how they can benefitfrom this change.
