“I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was about two-years old and my family’s had a JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) team ever since then,” explains BHS senior and the 2009 JDRF Beachwood Schools Team Captain Andrew Darvin. Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in children, according to the American Diabetes Association, and there is not yet a cure. JDRF offers support to families and is working to develop a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.

The Community Service Committee for BHS Student Council, under the direction of Craig Alexander and Sophomore Lauren Lipsyc as chairperson for the 2009 committee, organizes a number of charitable activities

Community Service Team Raises $32,000 for Juvenile Diabetes Researchthroughout the year and became involved with JDRF two years ago. “We send out a fundraising letter to all of our friends, family and acquaintances and the responses we get are truly phenomenal,” continued Darvin. This year, with Darvin as captain and involvement from student council and community members, the Beachwood Schools Team raised an amazing $32,000 for juvenile diabetes research.

This year’s fundraising efforts concluded with 57 participants from the Beachwood Schools Team walking in the Cure Diabetes Walk on Sunday, September 27th at the Cleveland MetroParks Zoo. In addition to the students who walked that rainy morning, in attendance were Superintendent Markwardt and his wife Nancy, Beachwood Board of Education member Beth Rosenbaum and her husband Jeremy, Beachwood teachers Craig Alexander, Jennifer Flaherty and Casey Matthews, and Beachwood parents Joan and Alan Lipsyc and Dana and Howard Darvin.

Congratulations to Noelle Britt, this year’s Beachwood Homecoming Queen! Britt was recognized on Saturday, October 17 during the halftime show of the football game.

The top six Homecoming queen finalists and their guests were all treated as royalty earlier this month when they participated in a unique fashion show with Dino Palmieri Salon on Kickin’ It with Kenny/Fox 8 on October 6. Students showcased new trends in hair, makeup and clothes for Homecoming events across Northeast Ohio.
