The extraordinary mission -to take part in the toughestrowing race in the world, TheTalisker Whiskey AtlanticChallenge - generated nearly£1m for three military charities. On their epic 51-day,3,000-mile voyage across theAtlantic the crew were facedwith a multitude ofheart-breaking obstaclesranging from horrific weatherto unfortunate technologicalmishaps ultimately causingirreparable damage to theirboat. In defiance of theChallenge’s disqualificationrules the crew where givenrepair assistance and continuedtheir journey to complete therace.

The incredible morale and

determination demonstrated bythe crew generated a hugeamount of support for theircauses and continues to do so.However, with just under£100,000 still needed for themto reach their goal of £1m, theteam have decided to exhibittheir remarkable vessel to thepublic for the first time. Theboat provides a uniqueopportunity to tell the dramaticstory of the crossing and of theincredible successes those withdisabilities can achieve.

Paddy Nicoll, Chairman ofthe Board of Trustees said:“This Row2Recoveryexhibition perfectlyencapsulates the spirit of theParalympics. It’s an honour forus to tell the story of thisamazing Row across theAtlantic by these braveamputee servicemen. I thinkthe public will be captivated.”

We hear that the digital age has come, thatelectronic devices are the way forward , we’reall on Twitter and Facebook, blogging andcommunicating in ways unthinkable even adecade ago. Books have had their first format

change since the invention of printing in the 15th century. But arewe in danger of holding the funeral before the body is dead?

The rise of Literary Festivals and the appetite for meeting authorsand finding out the true meaning of their work is evidence to thecontrary. All over the country festivals of words and books are on therise. At a recent Booksellers conference delegates were told that 15%of all adult fiction book sales were digital but the counter to that isthat 85% were hard copy or pbooks as they are now called! Whiledevices have their place – on trains, holidays etc the physical bookstill has certain advantages - no battery to charge, no expensivedevice to purchase, you can easilylend it to a friend or give it as agift. Only rarely is there a mentionthat the total number of bookssold is rising slightly, even in thesehard times.

The big change in buyingpatterns is between the differentways of obtaining a physical book– in a supermarket, online or in a‘real’ bookshop. What none ofthese can offer is the opportunityto met the author, hear themspeak about the book, itsinspirations and challenges, itscharacters and have it come to lifefor you.

The rise of festivals is evidenceof the public’s desire to haveexperiences. The Victorians wouldhave regarded anything smackingof commerce as an insult to thenoble art of literature. Yet Dickensgave public readings. Unlike KatiePrice, he stopped short of settingup a signing in his local market, but local booksellers did makesure they had extra copies on hand in case demand should surge!

Hay is only 15 years old and at the last count attracted 30,000visitors flocking into its marquees in early June. Cheltenham andEdinburgh, Oxford and Southwold all hold very popular Festivals.

Literary Festivals are most often rooted in the local community. They reflect the full breadth of interests and subjects you wouldexpect from any group of widely differing ages, pastimes and tastes.

Our local Festival, held in Chorleywood, on the edge of the

Chiltern Hills, in November eachyear, is no exception. In itsseventh year it has attracted suchbig names as Ben Elton, NickRobinson, Nigella Lawson,Howard Jacobson and JohnSuchet as well as a host of otherauthors. Each year it holds anevent for ‘rising stars’, authors notwell known but looking for aplatform to get their work in thepublic eye. Previous festivals haveattracted Sir Ranulph Fiennes,Howard Jacobson, Carol AnnDuffy, Jodi Picoult, MaxHastings and BBC’sAny Questions.

In a short timethis festival hasestablished itselfas a favouritewith audiencesand authors alike not

least for its informal style and infectious enthusiasm. If you have never been to a festival before, or if you are an oldhand, this Festival, brings the stars of the literary worldclose to home and is well worth a visit. Ticketsare on sale now either online fromwww.cwlitfest.org , where you can find alsofull details of all the events, or fromChorleywood Bookshop 01923 283566

As we continue to beencouraged to ‘buyBritish’ and see Marco

Pierre-White on TV selectinghis fruit and veg from a marketstall, it’s reassuring to know wecan also do the same locally.Farm shops and farmers’ marketsare ever popular, as isBeechwood Fine Foods, basedin the market town of Tring inHertfordshire.

However, Beechwood goesone-step further with itscommitment to sourcing localproduce, with many homemadeproducts served in its welcomingFairtrade café alongside a freshdeli counter; includingtraditional raised pork pies, cured meats and hams andspecialist British cheeses.

Frustrated by the lack oflocally sourced good qualityproduce, husband and wife team,Toby and Sarah Murray, startedthe business in June 2010 with apersonal desire to create a farm

shop in town, combining theirlove of home baking withfirst-rate coffee. “Sarah and Ifelt there was an opportunity forus to develop something a littledifferent within Tring, basedupon our own needs,” explainsToby. “We wanted to create aunique and friendly atmospherefor those people looking formore than just the off-the-shelf,pre-packaged andmass-produced!”

Earlier this year the shop wasawarded top marks in the FoodHygiene Rating Scheme - aFood Standards Agency/LocalAuthority partnership initiative -designed to assist consumersdecide where to eat out and shopfor food with good food hygienestandards. Owners Toby andSarah Murray proudly displaytheir certificate in the shopwindow.

Over the past two years, theshop has grown to be an integralpart of the community, with

Toby and Sarah attending andtaking part in events such as theHerts County Show and TringFairtrade Fortnight as well asacting as official ticket agents fora number of local organisations, including the Pendley CourtTheatre and Tring Carnival.

2011 saw the launch of theshop’s website and, shortly after, the introduction of onlineordering. The choice of deliciouscakes is extensive and includestraditional favourites, suchVictoria Sandwich and the moreexotic Black Forest Sandwichcombining cherries andchocolate. The range issupplemented by a variety ofwhicker hampers, perfect foryour Christmas store cupboard.Cakes from £10 and hampersfrom £30 with free local delivery.Full details via the website.In-store Christmas gift hamperscost from as little as £12.

“Sarah’s homemade cakes,especially, are much sought-after,

and the online facility gives usthe opportunity to provide anadditional service for theconvenience of our customersand to reach out to those whohave not yet had the chance tocall in to see us at our shop inFrogmore Street”, said Toby.

Launched this Autumn,Beechwood Country Preservesis the deli’s own-brand ofpreserves and chutneys, madeon-site by Sarah, using locallysourced ingredients whereverpossible, many from Grove Farmin the bordering town ofIvinghoe, Buckinghamshire. The range currently extends to11 preserves including OldDoverhouse Chutney, VictoriaPlum Jam, ‘Cherry & Berry’ and‘Curried Apple & Date’. In 1997, 55-year-old John Grimes of Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, was recovering from chronic fatigue syndrome followingPericarditis. To help him manage the stress of returning to work,

he took up yoga and, after that very first session, felt happier andhealthier. Today, John says, “I’m calmer and more relaxed and contented thanever before. Yoga has changed my whole outlook on life and aidedmy recovery from illness – and that’s something I want to share.”

Your unique, easy-to-follow plan, comes with detailed descriptionsand diagrams, and will be based upon yoga postures, breathingexercises, relaxation and meditation, personalised to meet yourspecific needs.

“We will refine and update your plan as you progress and I willgive you plenty of support, guidance and advice to help you continuethe practice in your own time,” which, says John, is usually achievedin 3-5 sessions.

Travel fromHenley-on-Thamesto PaddingtonStation and hop onthe underground

and you will find yourselfbombarded with a barrage ofbrightly coloured billboards, posters and adverts – quite oftenvoid of any style or intelligence! However, if you head down tothe River & Rowing Museumfrom 20 October you will seehow it should be done. “StuckUp” is a new exhibition that seesa striking selection of Thamestransport posters broughttogether from the early 20thcentury - the golden age ofBritish poster art.

The new exhibition celebratesthe masterful eye of Frank Pick(1878 – 1941) who becamepublicity officer for LondonUnderground in 1908 and wasinstrumental in the evolution ofits eye-catching brand design. The exhibition also captures atime when the Thames bankswere a thriving social hub –during the early 20th centurythere was a surge in interest inthe River Thames as a leisuredestination. With mostLondoners of that era alreadyrelying on the underground toget to work, Pick realised theonly way to increase passengernumbers was to persuadeLondoners to use the systemmore during their leisure time, taking advantage of the newtrend towards punting, swimming, rowing andrambling on the Thames – andhe developed an ingenious wayof doing so.

To promote London’s parks, museums, suburban beautyspots and historic houses andencourage more LondonUnderground usage, Pickwanted to use colourfullithographic posters in the sameway as Paris in the 1890s (Parishas revolutionised commercialadvertising with artists such asToulouse-Lautrec, Chéret and

Bonnard forming theemergence of the moderngraphic poster). In London at

this time, little thought wasgiven to the design of postermarketing materials and, after

becoming dissatisfied with thequality of design, Pick soondecided that instead of lettingthe printers hire commercialartists, he would commissionyoung and emerging artistshimself. By the 1920s thisapproach to advertising hadtaken off and Britain wasexperiencing a golden era inartistic and stylistic quality.During the 1920s and 1930sbold and striking poster designsappeared all over the LondonUnderground with artistsdrawing inspiration fromavant-garde art movements suchas Cubism and Futurism. Theuse of these styles introducedelements of modern art to amuch wider audience.

Thanks to Pick, in the 1920sand 1930s designing a poster forLondon Transport became seenas an honour for bothestablished and emerging artists. One of the earliest and mostnotable long runningcollaborations was with EdwardMcKnight Kauffer (1890 –1954) who introduced many ofthe general London public tomodern art through theinfluence of the cubistmovement on his work. Otherwell known artists who acceptedcommissions included Man Ray(1890 – 1977) and GrahamSutherland (1903 – 1980).

‘Stuck Up!’ at the River &Rowing Museum was inspiredby the generous donation offour duplicate Thames androwing posters from theLondon Transport Museumand includes a number o0fitems kindly loaned from theirpermanent collection.

“Stuck Up” will run from 20October – February 2013Tickets are £8 for adults and £6for children and provide free accessto the museum for a year. River & Rowing Museum, Mill Meadows,Henley-on-Thames, RG9 1BF.Follow @River_Rowingwww.rrm.co.uk

Q. WHAT ARE DENTALIMPLANTS, ARE THEYSCREWED INTO YOUR JAWOR YOUR TOOTH ROOTS?I am going to concentrate thismonth’s edition on DentalImplants and try and give youbasic understanding on dentistry’sexciting field. I have touched onthe subject in previous editorialsbut am happy to go over it againas it’s an exciting field.

Dental Implant is a titaniummetal rod which is placed into thejaw bone. They are used to replacemissing teeth and they can be usedto support one or more false teeth.Research indicates that dentalimplants biocompatible surfaceactually stimulates the requiredfusion with the bone. Once thathas been achieved, the crown, bridge or whole tooth replacementcan be fixed to the implant orimplants to feel and function likenatural teeth.

Implants are a well-established,tried and tested treatment. Over95% of modern implants shouldlast for many years with the rightcare. More people than ever arechoosing dental implants as thepreferred tooth replacementtherapy. That’s because people arediscovering that implants not onlyfeel secure and stable, allowingthem to speak and eat clearly, but

they look natural as well. Andthere’s another bonus- becausethey help prevent bone loss, implants can help to maintain amore youthful appearance!

Q. CAN IMPLANTS ALWAYSBE USED TO REPLACEMISSING TEETH?Regardless of the cause of toothloss, dental implants can be asimple, proven lasting solution forrestoring teeth. After a thoroughexamination of your medicalhistory, your dentist can advise youwhether dental implants may bethe right solution for you. There isno upper age limit.

Nevertheless, it does depend onthe condition of the bone in yourjaw. Your dentist will arrange for anumber of special tests to find outthe amount of bone still there. Ifthere is not enough, it may bepossible for the bone to be built upby grafting bone into the area first. This will be an extra procedureprior to placing the implant.

Also, heavy alcoholconsumption, smoking, diabetes orother clinical conditions mayinterfere with an implantsintegration process and its ultimatelong term success. Patients whogrind their teeth at night must alsoundertake a careful evaluation withtheir dentist.

DO IMPLANTS HURT? The big question! Placing theimplant means a small operationand can be performed using asimple local anaesthetic, andsometimes with sedation if you arenervous. Sometimes the dentistmay need to use general anaestheticfor complex cases. You will not feelany pain during the procedure butyou may feel discomfort during theweek after the surgery.

HOW LONG DOES THETREATMENT TAKE?Your dentist will be able to giveyou a rough timetable before thetreatment starts but usually thepermanent teeth are fitted 3-6months after the implants are putin. In a minority of cases, it maytake up to a year for the implant tofully integrate with the bone.

HOW LONG DO THEY LAST? How long implants and the newteeth last depends primarily onhow well your teeth are cared for.If you have good oral hygiene, including good home care andregular dental re care visits, yourimplants can lasts for many years, possibly up to an entire lifetime.

IS THERE ANYCOMPLICATION OR RISK? Careful preparation and

implementation of implanttreatment reduces risk to aminimum. However, Implanttreatment is a surgical procedure andas such it is associated with certainrisks. Under normal circumstances, the swelling and mild pain whichmay occur often disappear after afew days. Periodontitis (gumdisease), poor oral hygiene, inadequate wound healing, smoking,or serious general disease (e.g.diabetes) may be a contraindicationfor dental implants. Your dentist willbe glad to provide you withinformation about potentialcomplications and risks.

IS THE TREATMENTEXPENSIVE?Unfortunately, yes. However, inmany situations the cost is only alittle more than the cost of moreconventional treatment withcrowns and bridges. Over thelonger term, implants are usually amore cost effective and satisfactoryoption. There are advantages tohaving an implant. An implant toreplace a single tooth avoids theneed to cut down teeth either sidefor crowns to support a bridge.Implants can also help anchor adenture better so they do notmove around. However, it is best to discuss thedifferent treatment options withyour dentist and decide on whatsuits you best and fits with yourbudget.

Keep smiling.

I AM GOING TO GO OVER SOME IMPLANTQUESTIONS AGAIN THIS TIME AS WE HAVEHAD A FEW QUERIES ABOUT THEM RECENTLY.

Every year in the UK, 50,000 people, including about 300men, are diagnosed with breast cancer, making it our mostcommon form of cancer.

"Every 10 minutes someone is diagnosed in the UK," says GeriHalliwell, who has been a patron for charity Breast Cancer Care for12 years.

De Spice Girl is throwing her weight behind the annualawareness month, which raises money for breast cancer charities aswell as helping spread awareness of the disease.

With the pink ribbon as its emblem, the month has come tomean a lot to people who have breast cancer, and their family and friends.

"Dress pink, eat pink, party pink and think pink," says Halliwell. But as well as raising money with a pink fashion show or tea

party, it's also a time to acquaint yourself with some facts.Dough breast cancer is common, survival rates are better

than ever.Around 11,500 die from the disease each year. But since the

Eighties, breast cancer death rates have fallen by more than a third, and currently 82% of people survive beyond five years.

Dis is testament to the effectiveness of campaigns such as BreastCancer Awareness Month. Increased awareness means people arebeing diagnosed earlier, plus advancements in treatments havehelped.

However, director of services at Breast Cancer Care, Diana Jupp, points out that UK survival rates lag behind those of otherEuropean countries, because UK women are still more likely to belater seeing a doctor about changes in their breast.

"Presenting late impacts on the outcome of their treatment, soit's really essential that we get the message across so women getthemselves checked quickly," stresses Jupp.

"Nine times out of 10 it isn't cancer, but it's always best to get it checked."

So, despite the success of Breast Cancer Awareness Month so far, there's still a lot of work to be done. Here's a look at the key issuessurrounding breast cancer today...

COMPLEX CAUSESIf you thought breast cancer only occurred in people with a familyhistory of the disease, think again - it can happen to anyone, male or female.

While scientists have now identified genes which predisposepeople to breast cancer (families with high rates can be screened),and having more than one close relative who've been diagnosed mayincrease your own risk, charities point out that less than 10% ofcases will run in families.

More often than not, the exact reasons why one person developscancer and another doesn't can't be pinpointed, but research has

More often than not, the exact reasons why one person developscancer and another doesn't can't be pinpointed, but research has

found evidence that certain factors may increase the likelihood. One recent study found that a poor diet early in life may be a

factor, and obesity in adulthood is also thought to be a potential link.Dose who drink more alcohol may also be at higher risk, and

Hormone Replacement Derapy (HRT) and how much oestrogenyou've been exposed to over your lifetime, are also cited.

DIANA JUPP POINTS OUT THAT RESEARCH IS STILL ONGOING."We're still not that much nearer to understanding what causes it,"she says.

However, age is one of the biggest known risk factors, with some80% of breast cancers occurring in women over the age of 50.

Still, that means around 20% of diagnoses are for people under50, which amounts to around 9000 people every year.

THE SUPPORT NETWORKBreast cancer isn't just a life or death issue - for the majority ofpeople diagnosed, a key challenge is coping with the disease, and alot of charity funding goes towards helping with this.

After the initial shock of being diagnosed, a person will need toadapt to living with cancer. On top of dealing with the illness and, often very draining, treatment, normal life - and all the stresses andcommitments that come with it - goes on.

LUCKILY, HELP IS OUT THERE.Friends and family often offer to help with childcare, and this can bea real lifeline.

Rachel Rawson, Senior Clinical Nurse Specialist at BreastCancer Care, says: "It's always a good idea to take up offers of help, and look into other childcare options in your area."

De charity runs a free helpline, which people can call at anytime for support and advice on any issues relating to their illness -whether that be worries about surgery or practical dilemmas, such ashow to tell their children or employers.

"Money can be a big worry. We spend a lot of time signpostingpeople to the relevant avenues for support, whether that's transportto hospital or income support," says Rawson.

Dere are also specialist support forums, including for theyounger women who have breast cancer.

Clinical Nurse Specialist Jackie Harris points out that becauseyounger women are the minority of breast cancer patients, theyoften find it hard to meet anyone of a similar age going through thesame thing.

"De Younger Women's Forums bring these women togetherfrom all around the country," she says.

"Dey gain so much support from each other, share experiences, and remain firm friends afterwards."

LIVING WITH SECONDARIESBreast Cancer Care is using this year's awareness month tohighlight secondary breast cancer, with Secondary Breast CancerAwareness Day taking place on October 13.

Dis is when breast cancer spreads to other parts of the body -commonly lymph nodes, lungs, liver, bones and brain. Around36,000 women and men are currently living with secondary breastcancer, and although it can be treated, it can't be cured.

But Jupp points out that if a person has a secondary breast cancerin the bones, for example, they could still live with it for another 10 years.

"But you've got a ticking clock over you and you don't know howlong you've got," she warns.

De charity is currently fighting for more support for peopleliving with secondary breast cancer. Dey have identified a need formore access to specialist nurses, information and palliative care.

HOW DO I CHECK MY BREASTS?Lumps and bumps don't automatically mean cancer, but if you getinto the habit of checking your breasts regularly, you will knowwhat's normal for you and be able to spot changes. All parts of the breasts should be checked, including the armpits andup to the collarbone.Changes you should look out for include: Changes in size or shape. Changes in skin texture such as puckering or dimpling. Inverted nipple. A lump or thickening of breast tissue. Redness or a rash on the skin or around the nipple. Discharge from one or both nipples. Constant pain in the breast or armpit. Swelling in the armpit or around the collarbone.

Spotting these signs may not mean you have cancer, but seeing yourGP quickly is crucial. He or she will be able to put your mind at rest,or refer you for further tests if needed.

It is not every day HazlemereWindow Company gets anorder from their local

That said, double glazedconservatories and/ororangeries are not just for thosemore Conservative minded, asHazlemere have conservatorydesigners with over 30 years’experience who specialise indesigning structures that are soin-keeping with the existingproperty, that it is difficult totell that there has been anyextension at all to the dwelling. That also was the case here, andin a letter to HazlemereWindow Company dated 19thSeptember 2012 (See extractbelow), High Wycombe’s MPwas effusive in his praise forHazlemere Windows products, quality of installation andexperienced staff.

“We are delighted with ournew extension. Hazlemere'sproducts are first class and thebuilding work was managedand carried out with exceptionalprofessionalism. The buildersastonished us with their tidinessat the end of each day. Ofcourse there were the inevitableminor issues but these wereresolved swiftly and completelyby Jason, who could not havedone more to be helpful. Thankyou for the excellent service andproduct you have delivered. Thanks again for adding awonderful new room to ourhome,”Steve Baker MP Beng MScCEng MRAeS

In response, HazlemereWindows Marketing Director,

Mark Austin commented “It isalways nice when any clientwrites in of their own volition, particularly when one of theseis from our local ConservativeMP. Adding a full blownorangery to any home as Mr &Mrs Baker have done is a majorextension, and a partnershipbetween the client and theinstallers, requiring patienceand perseverance during theseveral weeks of disruptionwhilst building work isundertaken.

I am truly delighted thatSteve and Beth are thrilled withtheir new brick built doubleglazed orangery extension, reartwo section bi-fold door, lanternlight roof, internal downlighters and six sectionaluminium bi-folding and

Run by husband andwife team, Jason and Claire, Crocketts create bespoke gates usingonly the best Redwood softwood, Iroko hardwood and EuropeanOak. All the timbers used are top grade quality and all are fromFSC certified suppliers, ensuring that all the wood is responsiblysourced and replenished.

The gates they create range from simple garden gates anddiamond braces, through to large entrance gates ideal forautomation. They have a wide variety of styles available that canbe made to any shape and size to accommodate a clients needs, but should a client have a new design in mind Jason and his teamare happy to work from a sketch or image.

All their gates are made in traditional ways: framed, ledgedand braced and morticed, tenoned and dowelled, to ensuremaximum strength and durability. All softwood gates arepressure treated using modern treatments to provide longevityand protection, whilst the Iroko and Oak hardwood gates can beoiled or left to season over time. “Our softwood gates are

naturally pale in colour due to the timber and treatment, as areour Oak gates which are made from air dried Oak,” said Jason,“Whilst our Iroko gates are a naturally warm brown colour thatis enhanced to a golden hue by adding a coat of Teak Oil.”

Jason said: “We pride our selves in providing a good oldfashioned service for our clients. We offer home visits and aninstallation service to ensure we work with our clients every stepof the way.”

A visit to them demonstrates this fact, they are willing tospend time discussing a clients needs and will happily offer aglance around their workshop to show you gates they arecurrently crafting. It is clear from talking to them that they takegreat pride in their work and that they have a large knowledgebase.

“A vast majority of our clients come to us viarecommendations, “Claire said, “It’s lovely to know that ourclients are so happy with their gates that they want to tell theirfriends and family. We also have an increasing number ofcontracts with architects, garden designers, landscapers andbuilders, who value a good business ethic and a quality product.”

It has never been a better time tobuild. Local builders are chasingwork and building costs are at the

lowest level in 10 years. House priceshave increased in the South-East ofEngland with borrowing costs for thosewith equity at historically low levels. Forevery £3 you spend on your existinghome you will get back £4. That is a33% return on intial spending. Movingincurs Stamp Duty, right now thereforeremodelling gives a better financialreturn than any otheractivity, investment or otherwise.

However, for the majority this is notthe main inspiration to build.Mostpeople are happy with their houses, butthere is usually an aspect of their homewhich just is not quite right. Thekitchen may not be big enough or havea poor view. The dining room may bebadly situated or the living room toodark. There may be a more basicrequirement for extra bedrooms, buttoday the desire for a walk-in wardrobeor luxury en-suite bathroom is often agreater motivation.

Thoughts such as these are common, but rarely acted upon. Thereason being uncertainty that can only be answered withprofessional help. This is exactly what Mary and Chris ofBeaconsfield Buckinghamshire were seeking from Robert TimmsArchitects.

Mary : “We were not entirely happy with the layout of our

home.Intially in talking with Robert, wefocused on our dining-room being toodark and that we thought we neededmore bedrooms”

Robert Timms Architects offer a freeconsultation and explain both the goodand bad design points of your existinghouse. “The final design untapped mywish for a better kitchen with anadjacent dining area with with access tothe newly landscaped garden insummer”. Mary added.

“The design also gave us a newfamily-room based on a a ‘NewEngland’ precedent(Mary was born onthe US east coast) with a new fire-placeand a purpose designed media centre”.

All the new interior spaces havedouble-doors to the garden and havelarge rooflights to give a very brightinterior.Upstairs the new work hasprovided a master ensuite bathroomand a walk-in wardrobe. One furthernew bedroom was provided with aensuite.

When asked to picture a quintessentially English home, theimage that comes to mind is that of a traditional thatchedproperty in beautiful surroundings. And this is exactly

what you get with Theccan House. The five-bedroom, five-bathroom house is 4,500 square feet of a

truly unique home. Its chocolate-box looks combined withstate-of-the-art technology makes for a one-off in Beaconsfield –located in a highly desirable road one mile from the New Town andwithin catchment for the excellent private and state schooling facilitiesincluding Davenies for boys and High March for girls. London toMarylebone is reachable within 23 minutes.

The sense of charm and character predominant in Theccan's designis largely attributed to its thatched roof. First used to cover houses inSaxon times, thatch has enjoyed a resurgence over the past 30 years, ashouse developers and buyers increasingly acknowledge the advantagesof thatch insulation as well as its aesthetic qualities. Nationally, thatching is a growing trend with 60,000 properties now in the UK(according to the Thatching Advisory Service) and it has become asymbol of quality and prosperity.

Theccan house has been thatched to the highest standard by E. E.Sharp & Son – a family business that, now in its fifth generation, hasbeen thatching for 130 years. This firm has thatched hundreds ofproperties over the years – including some for the Royal family – andis a member of the National Society of Master Thatchers, so was theobvious choice for the project. The house has been built to the DorsetModel – a guide produced by the Dorset Technical Committeefollowing extensive research with the fire authorities and thatchingservices. This model is welcomed by insurance companies and ensurespremiums are reduced. Indeed, historical stereotypes that thatchedproperties can be difficult to insure are now virtually redundant – even

John Lewis now offers insurance for such specialist homes. For fans of thatched houses, the benefits the technique can bring to

a property are obvious – such as heat insulation, noise and pollutionreduction, as well as adding distinction and a real sense of charm to ahome. This is further enhanced in Theccan House due to its Englishoak double gables which give an elegant finish to the building.

The oak design continues throughout the property with oak doorsto every room, oak beams in the master suite and a curved oakstaircase leading to the first floor. Also in keeping with the traditionaltheme, the living room features an impressive stone surround fireplacewhich is suitable for either a gas or open fire. Other standout featuresinclude marble tiles in the master en-suite and an Italian curvedwalk-in dressing area to the master bedroom.

In contrast to its quaint, traditional exterior, Theccan House hasbeen fully equipped with the latest technological features. The Clipsallighting system creates the ultimate mood lighting for any occasion aswell as a programme for the more security conscious where the lightsin the property have an 'at-home' look when no one is actually in.Added to this, the Sonos music system has been connectedthroughout the home. This installation allows wireless control of musicthroughout the house – which can either be synchronised or managedon a room-by-room basis. Both these systems offer smart phone appsso that they can be controlled remotely.

With its desirable location and distinctive heritage, Theccan Houseboasts a unique blend of traditional beauty with state-of-the-arttechnology. This rare find really is a must-see for those seeking theperfect family home. To view this property please contact Nigel Briggs & Co on 01494 671099,or Frost Partnership on 01494 681234. Show home open weekdays from11.00- 13.00.

The Coalition Governmentrecently announcedproposals to relax planning

for home improvements in anattempt to boost the economy. However, these have met withmuch opposition from groupsfearing the relaxing of planninglaws could lead to serious disputesbetween neighbours.

As the law stands at present, aslong as a property still hassufficient permitted developmentsrights intact and all existingbuilding and planning laws arecomplied with as they stand, thenmost home owners can build asingle storey extension orconservatory up to a projection of3m if the property issemi-detached and up to 4m ifdetached. However, even nowneighbouring properties have“rights to light” and some councilsenforce a 45 degree rule, whilstothers a 60 degree rule, in that nostructure can go out further than adiagonal line from the neighboursnearest window i.e. line of sight. Inaddition there are restrictions onthe height that single storeyextensions can be built to.

Since 1st October 2010, whenstricter Building Regulations cameinto force, adding or replacing anexisting glass extension like aconservatory or orangery inEngland or Wales, needs carefulresearch to ensure that what isadded is permitted development.

From a long terminvestment/hassle free point ofview, it is important that any newdouble glazed structure fullycomplies with the planning rulesand Building Regulations in forceat the time. Failure to do so canhave significant consequences ifand when the property the glassextension is connected is sold. It isthe responsibility of the purchasersSolicitors to ensure that anyconservatory, extension, orangeryor replacement windows anddoors, fully comply with the rulesthat were in force at the time thesehome improvements were made.

Erecting any type of extension,be it a glazed structure or not,

which does not comply with allthe rules is rather like the man inthe bible Jesus talked about whobuilt his house upon the sand, soas soon as the waves, wind andrain came it disappeared in thestorm. Whereas in the past, someproperty owners have wrongly“got away” with breaking the law, planning enforcement noticesnowadays are more common. It isworth be aware that both theBuilding Regulations andplanning rules in England andWales are now much stricter sincethe need for all new structures tobe more thermally efficient, to

help cut carbon emissions. It clearly states on the

Government’s planning portalwebsite – as “With all buildingwork, the owner of the property(or land) in question is ultimatelyresponsible for complying withthe relevant planning rules andbuilding regulations.” This publicinformation Government websitewww.planningportal.gov.uk clearlysets out the issues eachhouseholder needs to take intoaccount before ordering a newdouble glazed conservatory ororangery, or indeed replacing anexisting structure, because the

rules make it quite clear that anychanges are made at all (i.e.removing external doors betweenthe house and glass structure, changing the width, depth, height, design etc.), it is likely thatplanning and/or BuildingRegulations will be required.

Double glazed conservatoriesand some orangeries that havesufficiently double glazed roofsand walls are normally exemptfrom building regulations if:• They are built at ground level

and are less than 30 squaremetres in floor area.

• The conservatory is separatedfrom the house by externalquality walls, doors or windows.

• There is an independent heatingsystem with separatetemperature and on/off controls.

• Glazing and any fixed electricalinstallations comply with theapplicable building regulationsrequirementsThe Government’s planning

portal also advises home ownersnot to construct conservatorieswhere they will restrict ladderaccess to windows serving roomsin roof or loft conversions, particularly if any of the windowsare intended to help escape orrescue if there is a fire. It is worthbeing aware that any newstructural opening between theconservatory and the existinghouse will require buildingregulations approval, even if theconservatory itself is an exemptstructure.

Glass extensions like doubleglazed conservatories andorangeries can be built if sufficientPermitted Development rights areintact, but even then they may stillneed to comply with all planningrules and Building Regulations. For free professional help and adviceabout planning and buildingregulations for any glass extensionfrom one of Hazlemere Windowsexperienced conservatory designexperts, call 01494 854266 toarrange a no obligation consultationor quotation based on your exactrequirements. As the autumn draws inour thoughts turn tothe comforts of home,

preparing for the long nightsand holidays over the festiveperiod.

Time together as a family isalways precious. Open-plankitchen and living areas allowyou to maximize time spenttogether whilst preparing, cooking and eating meals.

“An island provides apractical and sociablepreparation area” commentsMartin Postle from Oxford’sTeddy Edwards. “It maximizesworktop space, giving all-round,easy access to work surfaces.” Italso doubles up as a servingarea, whether it is a hearty stewfor family and friends onbonfire night or mulled winefor a Christmas party.

Guests and family can

congregate around the island tochat with the host or even helpwith the preparation of largermeals like Christmas dinner. The cook can face out into theliving areas, joining in withfriends and family and enjoyviews of other living areaswhere the family may begathering around a fire orenjoying a festive film. “Allow

for seating close to where thecook is working” continuesMartin “it allows friends orfamily to sit with a drink orsnack and chat easily with thecook”.

Another importantconsideration for open-planliving is ensuring the kitchencompliments the style of theother living areas. For the

kitchen, emphasis needs to beon furniture rather than onmodular kitchen units. “Here atTeddy Edwards we offer acontemporary take on classichandcrafted furniture withwarmth and charm rather thanmodular kitchen units. If you have recently been looking for new sofas and chairs, youmay have been disillusioned and disappointed to find that thequality doesn’t match the advertising. A lot of furniture offeredon the High Street these days is imported, and is of a very poorquality. Even big brand names are no longer reliable as they are

often of inferior quality masquerading behind a label. In completecontrast however, at TailorMade Sofas in High Wycombe, theybuild “home grown”, high quality, bespoke sofas and chairs at greatvalue prices.

When you visit them, always remember you are talking to themanufacturers, who in fact have their workshop above theshowroom. You will find on display, examples of over twenty models, all of which can be varied to suit you. Your choice of arm style startsthe decision process together with fine-tuning the design. You canchange legs, skirts, back and seat shapes for example.

Although there are standard sizes, all dimensions can be alteredby any amount. This of course is particularly important if you requirea change in seat depth, back height or the overall length. It is worthnoting, that corner groups can be built to the exact size of yourroom. Having established the arm style, features and framedimensions, the next decision is the fillings for the seats and backs. They have upholstery foam of varying firmness, different types offibre and also feathers are available to suit comfort and appearance.

Once you select the elements for your ideal sofa or chairs, you canthen decide on the fabric. Although there is a choice of hundreds offabrics, which may seem a daunting task, let a member of theirexperienced staff guide you through the process, and you should findexactly what you want. To help make the right choice they offer afree fabric sample service and they are happy to make a home visit ifrequired. At TailorMade Sofas there is no hard sell, they wouldprefer you to make the perfect choice.

They will deliver free of charge within fifty miles, at a time to suitthe customer. Manufacturing time is normally within four to sixweeks. If you decide to have your existing furniture recovered itwould normally be returned within two weeks.

Before you visit them, you may like to look at their websitewww.tailormadesofas.co.uk for more information. On the site youwill find most of their models with standard dimensions and priceguide. For those not familiar with High Wycombe there are alsotravel directions to their showroom in Victoria Street, which has freeparking.TailorMade Sofas, Victoria Street, High Wycombe, Bucks HP11 2LTTelephone: 01494 – 462233 • Facsimile: 01494 – 450593E-mail: [email protected]
