Beccles Twinning Association Newsletter July 2014

We all had a great time over the twinning weekend in June. Although some of the visitors were well known to their hosts, some came for the very first time. So for those of us new to twinning, they all came as visitors and left as friends and I guess that is what twinning is all about. Here are some pictures of the weekend. It was sad to lose the plate challenge to Petit- Couronne, but now we have even more reason to take a strong contingent over in 2015 to try and win it back! Thanks must go to all the hosts, without whom twinning could not take place, Tesco’s for parking and the farewell breakfast, Chris Capps-Jenner and his team from the Rugby Club for the Welcome Breakfast, Alison at Beccles Library for the Suffolk Puff workshop, the musicians and all who helped with the Saturday evening Hog Roast, Sunday Barbeque and Plate Challenge including Beccles Lido & Big Dog Ferry. The ‘Old Goats’ ran a parallel programme of events that was equally well enjoyed.

Thank-You Barbeque

On August 3rd, we will be holding a Barbeque at Puddingmoor Place to say thank you to our hosts and look at twinning photos. Members of the French Chat group and Twinning working party are very welcome to attend however they will be asked to contribute a dish or similar. If you would like to come along, please contact Suzanne by July 23rd : [email protected]

French Films at the Public Hall

Following the screening of the ‘Intouchables’ (in May) and ‘Amelie’ (on July 10th) Beccles Public Hall are screening two more iconic french films with English subtitles on a Thursday evening: ‘Jean de Florette’ on the 14th August and ‘Manon des Sources’ on the 11th September.

Jazz visit in September

We are looking forward to welcoming the Jazz Combo from Petit-Couronne and their supporters from the 19th to the 21st September. If you would like to see the full programme, are able to host, or assist in anyway during the weekend please contact Michelle (01502 470734) as soon as possible for more information. Our visitors will be attending the Beccles festival Jazz concerts and performing at a fringe event (to which all will be welcome) as well as helping local schoolchildren at Jazz workshops. Do come along and support them. It promises to be yet another fun weekend and will be fully reported in the next Newsletter.

October Visit to Petit-Couronne

Early in October, a small group of us are looking forward to travelling to Normandy to take part in the Autumn Apple festival along with a similar group from Ahlem – Full report and pictures in the October Newsletter.

New Chair and Vice Chair

At the Twinning Working party meeting on June 19th, the first in the new civic year, the Mayor Caroline Topping and former chair of the association, announced that we needed to elect a new Chair and Vice Chair and promptly nominated Michelle Golding as Chair and Suzanne Gibbons as Vice Chair and they were unanimously elected. We will do our best to serve the association for what promises to be an exciting year ahead.
