The Effective Advisory Board

The primary and most important function is tosupport the local corps officers.

The board assumes a liaison role between The Salvation Army and the community. The boardwill work to increase the visibility of theorganization and its interaction within thecommunity.

The board members also function asinterpreters. They must interpret thecommunity to The Salvation Army so as tounderstand its pulse, character and needs. This will provide better understanding fordeveloping appropriate programs and fundingresources.

The board must be instrumental in developinggoals and a strategic plan of action to achievethose goals.

Board members are the doers.

The very nature of a not-for-profitorganization is to depend on its board forfundraising assistance.

Along with fundraising comes fiscalaccountability. Since each local unit must standon its own financially, the Advisory Board must beinvolved in this process to help ensure a solidfinancial operation and appropriate accountabilityto the community.
