Simon RichmondCoordinating Author; Cape Town Simon has been hooked on Cape Town since first visiting in 2001 to research Lonely Planet’s South Africa, Lesotho & Swaziland guide and the Cape Town guide. He’s returned for every edition since, exploring practically every corner of the Cape and surrounding area, taking full advantage of a travel writer’s licence to meet a cast of inspirational locals and indulge in the fruits of the land – not least of which are its delicious wines! An

award-winning journalist and photographer, Simon has written scores of titles for Lonely Planet and other publishers, as well as contributing features to many magazines and newspapers around the world. Follow him on Twitter, Instagram and at www.simonrichmond.com.

Lucy CorneDay Trips & Wineries, The Garden Route Since she first visited South Africa in 2002, Lucy has been hooked and has returned on six occasions, spending time in over 200 towns across the country. She moved to Cape Town in 2010 and spends her weekends exploring the wineries, restaurants and breweries of the Western Cape. Lucy has become one of the Cape’s leading beer experts – a role she’s been practising for since university. She blogs about the South

African beer scene at www.brewmistress.co.za. Read more about Lucy at: http://auth.lonelyplanet.com/profiles/lucycorne

Our Writers

Our StoryA beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies. Lonely Planet was born.

Today, Lonely Planet has offices in Franklin, London, Melbourne, Oakland, Beijing and Delhi, with more than 600 staff and writers. We share Tony’s belief that ‘a great guidebook should do three things: inform, educate and amuse’.

Watch the traditional key ceremony at 10am on weekdays. (www.castleofgoodhope.co.za; cnr Castle & Darling Sts; gCastle)

Company’s Gardens G9

1 This former vegetable patch is now a verdant escape in the heart of the city; locals can be

found lazing on the lawns. Don’t miss the Public Garden and the National Library. (Government Ave, City Bowl; gDorp/Leeuwen)

South African National Gallery G10

3 South Africa’s impressive premier art space harks back to Dutch times and includes

some extraordinary pieces. (www.iziko.org.za/ museums/southafrican-national-gallery; Government Ave, Gardens; gAnnandale)

Bo-Kaap Museum F8

4 With its vividly painted houses (pictured left), Bo-Kaap is one of the most colourful

and photographed parts of the city. Bo-Kaap Museum provides an insight into 19th-century Cape Muslim lifestyle. (www.iziko.org.za; 71 Wale St; gLeeuwen)

Long Street F9

5 This busy thoroughfare, with its grand Vic-torian buildings, is a place to shop and party,

and once formed the border with the Muslim Bo-Kaap district. (City Bowl; gDorp/Leeuwen)

Greenmarket Square H8

6 Surrounded by art-deco architecture, this cobblestone square hosts a lively and

colourful daily crafts and souvenir market. (City Bowl; gChurch/Longmarket)
