CAPA News School Musical

The big week is drawing closer for Bellingen High School’s bi-annual musical. This year we are taking on Beauty and the Beast, with a stellar cast from across the age groups. Rehearsals are going well, with lots of hours put in by our diligent students. Please come and support us! For the first time we are running a Saturday matinee, to allow for the littlies in town to come and witness the magic. Tickets at the door!

Mathematics News Year 8 Maths Day Success

On Friday 18th May four

talented students from Year 8,

Etienne Axelsson, Matt Borgert,

Sam Case and Byron

Livingstone accompanied Mr

Webb to the University of New

England in Armidale to

compete in the annual Year 8

Maths Day competition. This

competition has been running

for over 25 years and this year

there was a total of 54 teams

competing.

The competition was divided into five sections throughout the day:

1. Free for all contest where teams answered 25 questions collectively.

2. Jigsaw where each team member is given a clue to a problem, then the teams

put the clues together to find a solution.

3. Head to Head contest where the teams compete against another team solving

number pattern questions. This was repeated 5 times against other teams.

4. Smorgasbord where teams tackled a series of graded problems with points

awarded according to the degree of difficulty.

5. Construction activity where the students were required to build the tallest free

standing tower as possible out of 10 sheets of A4 paper, 4 foam drinking cups

and some sticky tape.

The four students worked extremely

well as a team with vigorous debate at

times. By the end of the day they

had accumulated enough points to be

announced as the overall winners.

This is the 2nd time that Bellingen

High has won this competition in the

last four years and shows excellent

work that is happening at our school.

From the TAS Faculty Hospital Education Day – Year 9 Child Studies

Students from Year 9 Child

Studies recently attended an

Education Training day at the

Coffs Harbour Health

Campus held in the SIMLAB.

The day included a number of

hands-on experiences for

students in the Simulation

Lab and introduced students

to many possible careers in

health, as well as some

valuable sessions on personal

safety and health-related

issues for young people.

The Centre trains doctors, nurses and health professionals from many fields, so

Bellingen High students are very fortunate to be able to participate in this program.

Huge thanks to Rob, Belinda and Natasha for their time, expertise and humour!

The students who attended enjoyed the day immensely, were outstanding ambassadors

for our school and impressed with their thoughtful questions and engagement

throughout the day.

Year 11 Aboriginal Studies Meditating and Creating Stories in Sand

Throughout this semester our Year 11 Aboriginal Studies class has welcomed many Elders and community members to our lessons. Aunty Maureen and Uncle Troy have joined us for many of our evening classes where they have shared stories, songs, knowledge and personal experiences. Recently Aunty Maureen guided us through a meditation and visualisation to help us connect to Country, everyone shared stories, then expressed their learning creatively through sand mandalas. We are grateful to Aunty Maureen and Uncle Troy for bringing their expertise, knowledge and guidance to our classes.

The journey continues with students currently undertaking a Local Community Case Study on an area of special interest to them in our Gumbaynggirr Community. Many Elders and community members have joined us for discussions and yarning, walking on Country and interviews. Some of the topics the students are investigating are Art, Music & Song, Land and Land Rights, Aboriginal Language Education, Didgeridoo, Bush Tucker, and Dance.

We are fortunate to have so many people in our Community who are passionate about sharing Culture and impress on our students the importance of passing on knowledge and stories. Respects to Uncle Michael Jarrett, Aunty Gloria Mercy, Kieren Brown, Ricky Buchanan and Nelli Gallop for their contributions.

From the Ag Plot Poddy calves now have names

The calves have been at school for five weeks now and finally, the names are settled. They are P-Nort, Pepa, Pepsi, Phenix, and Prince.

The students have been busy looking after their every need and now realise how demanding calves can be. Year 9 and Year 10 Agriculture students can now prepare and feed the calves milk, importantly clean the buckets preventing disease, provide pellets, fill the hay net, and provide clean drinking water.

Club Shows

The show Poultry Show Team have been competing at the local poultry club shows over the last two weekends. Both our large and bantam Rhode Island Red birds took out major breed prizes, with a rooster awarded Reserve Champion.

They are our last shows until the spring. It is now time to collect the eggs, hatch out some cute fluffy chickens, and hope they become champions next year.

Bellingen High Seedling Enterprise Takes Off

Every student has planted a number of seedling trays this year. We sell them at Norco and the proceeds provide some of the necessary funding to run our Agriculture program. This enterprise is a great way to explain how four small seeds costing a few cents, turns into something profitable. Now, profit is interesting to students.

The Bell-Hy Red Poll Breeding Season is over

The cattle were artificially inseminated last Thursday and Friday, with straws from Eurimbla Gladstone, Eurimbla Fonz and Eurimbla Leopold. Our bull returned to the farm on Sunday with a sad face. Thank you to Alister Dieckmann from Promised Land Angus Stud, for your support. The calves are due in March. The students are looking forward to seeing beautiful Red Poll calves in 2019.

Year 11 Primary Industries Update The class has nearly completed Cluster 1 and Cluster 5. When finalised they have gained competency in the care for the health and welfare of livestock, able to handle livestock using basic techniques, identify and mark livestock, and carry out regular livestock observations following correct WH&S processes. Well done on completing the first part of the course Year 11!

Sport News Records Smashed

The annual Bellingen High School Athletics Carnival was held on Thursday afternoon

31st May and all day Friday, 1st June in fine and sunny conditions. Participation was

high and colourful skirts in House colours the obvious theme.

The first record to fall was the 12 years girls 2oom record when Yasmin Ball

smashed a 42 year old record by 1.26seconds running a 28.74. Yasmin went on to

break the 12 years girls’ Triple jump record by 12cm jumping 8.29m.

Sophie Boyd ran the 14 years girls 800m

in a record time of 2.36.87 to take over 6

seconds off a 20 year old record.

There was one more record to fall with

Dane Cross taking over a minute off the

1500m Walk event in completing a great

walk race where he lapped all other

competitors.

Age Champions on the day were hotly

contested as you nearly had to go in every

event to enable you to amass the greatest

number of points.

Five teams through to the Northern NSW

Titles

Bellingen High School had 9 teams competing at the Coffs Coast Futsal Titles.

Teams came from as far away as Tamworth, Armidale and Maclean to compete in

these titles so the competition was fierce. Teams need to finish in the top 2 to

qualify for the Northern NSW Championships to be held in Port Macquarie in August.

The boys 19 years team found the going tough and lacked a little cohesion in their

play-making despite having trained well prior to the tournament. They enjoyed their

time and will look forward to next year, as many of them were Year 11.

In a closely contested tournament the 16 years boys displayed flashes of brilliance,

unfortunately the boys couldn’t catch a break on or off the court with some disputed

results. Disappointingly this resulted in the boys missing the final.

The 14 years boys played a very strong tournament displaying great improvement

from last year. They finished in first position after the preliminary games, which

put them in to the final against Oxley High School. In a hard fought and often

physical battle, the game was tied at 3-3 at full time, taking the game in to golden

goal extra time. In the second period of extra time, against the run of play, Oxley

scored the winning goal. This left the boys as runners up and qualifiers for the

Northern NSW Championships.

Page 16: Bellingen High School...The Centre trains doctors, nurses and health professionals from many fields, so Bellingen High students are very fortunate to be able to participate in this

The 13 years boys played tremendously well in the first tournament developing their

tactical awareness. They came up against a strong Bishop Druitt College team in the

final and were down 3-1 at half time. They fought back well eventually going down 4-

3 at full time. Again, runners up and qualifiers.

The 19 years girls had a very successful tournament to finish in first place after the

preliminary rounds. In the final they had to take on old foes in Bishop Druitt after

having disposed of Maclean

High. The final was a one-

sided affair with the girls

winning 5-2 to be Champions

on the day.

The 16 years girls had 2 teams in the competition with both faring well and both

teams making the semis. The yellow team (15 years girls) had to play Oxley High

School in their semi and lost 2-0 in a close game. The blue team had to play Bishop

Druitt and won a one-sided game 5-0. This put them into the final against Oxley

High from Tamworth and unfortunately did not play their best game going down in a

close encounter 2-1. Runners-up on the day, and with only one team going through

there will be more depth (and less tired legs) at the next level.

The 14 years girls also had 2 teams experiencing their first tournament – only two

girls had ever played before. Many of the girls were 12 and 13 so the future looks

bright. The Yellow team had many of the younger players and while improving their

understanding of the game, failed to win a game. The Blue team made the semis and

had to play Bishop Druitt who they beat in their preliminary round 4-0. However,

nothing is predictable in this game where close games can change so quickly! The

girls were down 3-0 with 7 minutes to go when the girls realised they needed to win

to compete at the next level. Sophie Boyd slotted in 3 unanswered goals before full

time to take the game to golden goal extra time. The extra time could not split the

teams so a penalty shootout was to determine the result. Clementine Whiteley in her

first tournament ever at 13 years of age had to face the Bishop Druitt shooters as

goalkeeper. Three girls were selected to take the penalties – Summer Hogan (13),

Indiana Brodbeck (12) and Sophie Boyd (14). All four girls stood up to the pressure

as the shootout went through 4 rounds before the deadlock was broken and Bellingen

High won and went on to play the final. The final was against Oxley High and despite

leading early, the girls went down in the dying moments 3-2. These girls get to

progress to the next level having experienced and learnt so much.

So overall a very successful day with one champion team and 4 team’s runners up and

all 5 qualifying for the Northern NSW

Championships.
