Bhutto was the eldest childof former prime minister
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a Pakistaniof Sindhi descent and ShiaMuslim by faith, and Begum
Nusrat Bhutto, a Pakistani of
Iranian-Kurdish descent,similarly Shia Muslim by faith.Her paternal grandfather wasSir Shah Nawaz Bhutto, who

pursued her higher education in
the United States. From 1969 to1973, she attended RadcliffCollege at Harvard University,where she obtained a Bachelorof Arts degree with cum laudehonors. She was also elected
for Phi Beta Kappa. Bhuttowould later call her time atHarvard "four of the happiestyears of my life" and said itformed "the very basis of her
belief in democracy". Later, in1995, as Prime Minister, shewould arrange a gift from thePakistani government toHarvard Law School.

Struggle for Feminism
During the election campaigns theBhutto government voiced its concern
for women's social and health issues,including the issue of discrimination
against women. Bhutto announced plans
to establish women's police stations,
courts, and women's development banks.
Despite these plans, Bhutto did not propose any legislation toimprove welfare services for women. During her electioncampaigns, she promised to repeal controversial laws thatcurtail the rights of women in Pakistan. Bhutto was pro-lifeand spoke forcefully against abortion, most notably at the

The Taliban took power in Kabul in
September 1996. It was duringBhutto's rule that the Taliban gained
prominence in Afghanistan .She, likemany leaders at the time, viewed theTaliban as a group that couldstabilize Afghanistan and enabletrade access to the Central Asian
republics, according to authorStephen Coll. He claims that like theUnited States, her government
provided military and financialsupport for the Taliban, even sendinga small unit of the Pakistani army
into Afghanistan.
She took an anti-Taliban stance, andcondemned terrorist acts allegedlycommitted by the Taliban and theirsupporters.

In 2002, Pakistani presidentPervez Musharraf amended
Pakistan's constitution to banprime ministers from servingmore than two terms. Thisdisqualified Bhutto from everholding the office again. Thismove was widely consideredto be a direct attack on formerPrime ministers BenazirBhutto and Nawaz Sharif. On3 August 2003, Bhutto

After eight years in exile in Dubaiand London, Bhutto returned to Karachi on18 October 2007, to prepare for the 2008national elections
En route to a rally in Karachi on 18October 2007, two explosions occurredshortly after Bhutto had landed and leftJinnah International Airport. She was notinjured but the explosions, later found to bea suicide-bomb attack, killed 136 peopleand injured at least 450. The dead includedat least 50 of the security guards from herPPP who had formed a human chainaround her truck to keep potential bombersaway, as well as six police officers. A
number of senior officials were injured.Bhutto, after nearly ten hours of the paradethrough Karachi, ducked back down intothe steel command center to remove hersandals from her swollen feet, moments
before the bomb went off. She wasescorted unharmed from the scene.

On 27 December 2007, Bhutto waskilled while leaving a campaign rally for
the PPP at Liaquat National Bagh, whereshe had given a spirited address to partysupporters in the run-up to the January2008 parliamentary elections. Afterentering her bulletproof vehicle, Bhutto
stood up through its sunroof to wave tothe crowds. At this point, a gunman firedshots at her and subsequently explosiveswere detonated near the vehicle killingapproximately 20 people. Bhutto wascritically wounded and was rushed to
Rawalpindi General Hospital. She wastaken into surgery at 17:35 local time, and
pronounced dead at 18:16

After the assassination, there wereinitially a number of riots resulting in
approximately 20 deaths, of which threewere of police officers. Around 250 carswere burnt; angry and upset supportersof Bhutto threw rocks outside thehospital where she was being held.
Through December 29, 2007, thePakistani government said rioters hadwrecked nine election offices, 176
banks, 34 gas stations, 72 train cars, 18rail stations, and hundreds of cars andshops. Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the
rival opposition party Pakistan MuslimLeague (N), stated that "This is atragedy for her party, and a tragedy forour party and the entire nation."President Musharraf decreed a three-
day period of mourning.
