Avoiding fear-based tactics

• “stranger-danger” warnings and fear-based prevention approaches not effective

• Teach young people how to be smart internet users: empowerment

Understanding personal disclosure

• A common safety message is: “Don’t post personal information online.”

• Reality is different: “How do I register on a site?” “How can I have fun on MySpace without sharing information about who I am?”

• “Think before you post” (SID 2010)
