Berwyn has been creating quite a buzz in the Chicago area, most recently with the new looks on Roosevelt Road and at the corner of Cermak and Harlem with the newly completed Berwyn Gateway Plaza and revitalization of Cermak Plaza. New infrastructure, new and improved buildings and new businesses have been key elements in Berwyn’s growing vitality. Nevertheless, Berwyn can also attribute its success to its solid economic bedrock filled

with many mainstay businesses. This issue is called the Jubilee Edition because it recognizes some of these old friends who are celebrating a milestone anniversary this year. These folks truly have given Berwyn its stable character and contributed to our traditional values and economic strength. All of our newest and greatest businesses are supported by these bedrock businesses. Congratulations and thanks to all.

Jubilee is not only about the personal celebration of our longstanding businesses but also about our moments of community celebration. As the warm weather breaks through the winter, it means that

Berwyn’s full-bodied event season is gearing up (see page 13 for a taste). I have always been amazed at the enthusiasm and hard work that the BDC member-volunteers have shown in creating fantastic special events like Oktoberfest, the Route 66 Car Show and the Piper Award Dinner. I want to make mention of one group that has truly gone above and beyond – the Depot District Special Events Committee. They produce seven events from the Monster Mini-Golf Pub Crawl in April through Deck the Depot in December. They meet year-round to plan and create community events that are a great cultural addition to life in Berwyn. Join me in thanking them and all of the BDC volunteers by attending each of these great events.

The BDC is also kicking off a membership drive this summer. As a not-for-profit membership organization, our mission states that “Through a shared vision with the community, the BDC is committed to those activities that support and contribute to the economic growth and vitality of our proud City.” Our unique structure makes the BDC a special place where small and large businesses, residents and representatives from the City can meet to exchange ideas, discuss common issues and work together to develop and expand the economic growth of Berwyn. Our members come from all business sectors, including financial, retail, service, corporate, government and healthcare as well as Berwyn residents. And with more economic growth and development on the horizon, isn’t it time that you become a community leader and add to the energy that keeps Berwyn Rising? Yes, it is the best time. Join us today.

No money for advertising? Go GUERRILLA!o your marketing and advertising budget was the first “nice-to-have” line item that was slashed during these stressed economic times? Fear not because all

is not lost! There are plenty of low-cost options that you can explore that will keep your business in the fronts of your customers’ minds. Have you ever heard of the term “guerrilla marketing?” In Spanish, the term “guerrilla” means “little war” and when applied to marketing, it references tactics and interactions that rely on the element of surprise in approaching your customers.

Guerrilla marketing is an advertising strategy that focuses on low-cost, unconventional means that rely heavily on creativity instead of cash flow. These marketing strategies target your existing customers who already know you rather than focusing energy on acquiring new ones. The term was first defined by Jay Conrad Levinson in his book Guerrilla Marketing. Levinson stated, “In order to sell a product or a service, a company must establish a relationship with the customer. It must build trust and support. It must understand the customer’s needs, and it must provide a product that delivers the promised benefits.”

Instead of money, the primary investments in this small business oriented marketing are time, energy, and

imagination. Owners are encouraged to forget about the competition and concentrate on cooperating with other businesses. Guerrilla marketers should use a combination of marketing methods to create a campaign and incorporate current technology as a tool to build a loyal customer base.

Because guerrilla marketing intends to take customers by surprise and make an impression, your business needs to find ways to pop-up where and when people least expect it. By being clever and unpredictable, you challenge customers who desire some fun in their products.

Ideas for guerrilla marketing include:

• Impressivebusinesscards Make yours stand out from the rest. Make sure you invest in a good design and paper stock as this will go a long way. Hire a graphic designer if needed. Don’t skimp out on having an impressive card.

• Colorfulenvelopes The idea is to stand out from the pile of junk mail and make your mailer memorable and impressive.

• Handwrittennotes(nolabels) This adds a personal touch and makes you seem like a real person instead of a machine. It’s personalized and will make an impact as it will stand out from the rest.

BDC puts Membership Drive on the horizon

TOGETHER we represent a significant voice, and as a group, we make a positive difference. The BDC membership is comprised of over 300 business,

organizational and resident members. As Jon Fey mentioned in the President’s Letter on page 2, the BDC’s mission is to “contribute to the economic growth and vitality of our proud City.” The swell of growth and pro-business climate in Berwyn has been accomplished through a group effort between our business community, residents and the City of Berwyn.

In order to support the continued momentum of the BDC’s business-building efforts, the Chamber Services Committee has joined forces with the Latino Business Outreach committee to launch a membership drive. The BDC will host an initial orientation luncheon session that will detail the programs and services offered exclusively to BDC members. The luncheon will also include a presentation by Rhonda Henderson, a small business coach and mentor with SCORE Chicago, on the topic of the tried-and-true benefits of face-to-face networking. The seminar will take place on May 31 at 11:30 a.m. at Paisans Pizzeria & Bar. Register for the event at Berwyn.net.

The BDC Membership Drive will officially launch on

Thursday, June 14 at 5:30 p.m. at a Berwyn After Hours event that will be hosted at FitzGerald’s Sidebar with catering from Capri Ristorante. The event will feature an introduction to the BDC through a panel discussion from BDC members as well as an opportunity for networking. The event is open to potential members as well as active members. Business representatives interested in attending should contact the BDC at 708-788-8100 or [email protected] to RSVP for the event.

The BDC Board of Directors and staff look forward to an exciting year and encourage you and your employees to take advantage of the myriad of benefits that we offer. Please attend one of our upcoming business events to learn first-hand how our seminars, networking events, marketing and advertising programs, and public relations can benefit your business. We view membership as a collaborative effort, and we want to know how we can continue to serve you and your colleagues better. Join us.

North Berwyn School District 98

Berwyn Public Library

South Berwyn School District 100

School District 100 was honored to host Governor Pat Quinn on February 27. Governor Quinn toured the 2nd grade and kindergarten classes at Piper School to observe the district’s use of technology in the classroom. In his press conference to promote 21st Century learning, Governor Quinn stated “The miracle of what’s going on right here at Piper, we need to do everywhere in Illinois.” Board President, James Swicionis, pleased with the Governor’s visit, stated “Technology is essential and it’s nice to have the governor qualify that.” We are grateful to the Governor for showcasing District 100’s accomplishments in bringing 21st Century Learning, specifically our 1:1 initiative, to every student in School District 100. When District 100 opens its doors for the 2012/2013 school year, 100% of students will have 24/7 access to wireless devices.

Future District 100 learners are eager to start school. During February’s kindergarten registration, 325 children were enrolled for the 2013 school year. In addition, our yearly preschool screening, held March 21-23, resulted in 160 children screened in areas of hearing, vision and social development skills.

Great things are happening in School District 100. Please visit www.bsd100.org for information on our district and to be linked to the individual schools.

On April 18, the eighth grade students took their annual spring trip to Springfield, Illinois. Departing from Lincoln at 6:45 a.m., the students visited the Lincoln Tomb, the New State Capitol, the Old State Capitol, the WWI, WWII, Vietnam and Korean War Memorials and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. The trip is designed to provide the students with an understanding of the history of Illinois and the function of state government.

The Prairie Oak School library reports that

17,601 books were checked out for the months of February and March. Teacher promotion of student independent reading and the Prairie Oak incentive program, this year called “Reading with Spirit!”, is having an impact on the success of the Prairie Oak Media Center in promoting student enjoyment of reading.

Thirty-five seniors at Morton West High School have been named 2012-13 Illinois State Scholars due to their performances in the classroom and on the Prairie State Achievement Examination and/or ACT or SAT college-entrance exams. Wing Boss 6625 W. Roosevelt Road

Michael Pace has had a variety of experience in the restaurant industry. Past endeavors include LaBella and the Avenue Ale House both in Oak Park. His most recent project brings him to Berwyn where he will open Wing Boss, a fast food style restaurant specializing in chicken wings and their quick delivery. Mr. Pace is renovating the approximately 1,250 SF space formerly occupied by Gelato Uno into this new restaurant. The TIF scope of work includes, but is not limited to, demolition, interior renovations including framing, HVAC, plumbing, electrical and carpentry upgrades needed for the new business.

Blue Penguin Bar & Grill 3250 S. Grove Avenue

In the Depot District, the former Salerno’s building will be getting an upgrade and name change. Onalisa Zeller will be opening Blue Penguin Bar & Grill. The TIF scope of work includes awning and signage. The approximately 4,000 sq. ft. commercial space will be a full service bar and grill featuring pizza and traditional American cuisine with banquet seating on the second floor.

Off the Traxx 3144 S. Oak Park Avenue

With the closing of Cherry Lounge, Eddie Wilkowski saw an opportunity to open another business. Off the Traxx will be Mr. Wilkowski’s second bar establishment as he currently operates Marlins in Lyons. This new business will feature exposed brick and train décor, while offering a limited food menu along with all your favorite drinks. The 970 square foot space will be completely gutted, with the TIF scope of work including a complete interior build-out consisting of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, flooring, ceiling and façade renovation.

Collision Centers of America 6305 W. Ogden Avenue

Collision Centers of America recently purchased property on Ogden between Cuyler Avenue and Highland Avenue. Collision Centers has had incredible growth in the Chicago region in recent years. The location on Ogden is their 24th unit, serving all collision repair needs from minor dents and fender benders to complete frame repair and paint. The TIF committee worked with the applicant to ensure the front façade, of historic value to Route 66, was preserved and repaired.
