Irazu ParkIrazu Park is the most visited national Park in Costa Rica.

The summit of Volcán Irazú is near tree-line, and the wind and volcanic activity conspire to give the effect of a

moonscape. There are several craters rimmed by gnarled, scorched trees, and lined with brilliantly colored rain fed mineral pools.

The last time Volcán Irazú awoke was in the first half of the 1960’s, when, for four years it showered the residents of Cartago and san José with ash, clogged the air with smoke, and sent glowing boulders rolling down its sides. The next eruption can’t be predicted with much accuracy, but currently the only activity in the crater is from fumaroles releasing toxic steam. Irazú has erupted frequently in his-

torical times — at least 23 times since its first historically recorded eruption in 1723. Its most famous recent erup-tion began in 1963 and continued until 1965 showering the capital sanJose and much of the central highlands of Costa Rica with ash.

The best time to get a view of the crater is early in the morn-ing between December and April. The Irazu Volcan due to it extreme elevation often above the clouds, enabling the sun to shine on the crater.

Beyond Xperience reader Dr. V. K. Kapoor from Lucknow India, current-ly in Abu Dhabi UAE, recently went on journey of his life time, here he would like to share his experiences during his trip with our readers. Delhi - srinagar flight had a mixed crowd – middle income group fami-lies gazing at the cold fumes jetting out of the overhead panels and ex-cited with various amenities, includ-ing individual TV screen at each seat (though no programme had started as yet), standing and talking aloud to members of their group seated several

rows away, exchanging seats and say-ing prayers aloud as the plane took off. There were few government offic-ers (frequent flyers) who, totally uncon-cerned with the surroundings, settled into their seats, put on their reading glasses and submerged themselves into the recent bestsellers. There was an obviously foreign returned young techie with his diamond-studded wife, sporting branded sunglasses flipped on her forehead, asking the cabin crew for English newspapers and business magazines.Accommodation in srinagar in golden Lily, a deluxe houseboat on the pictur-

esque Dal Lake, was part of the itiner-ary planned by the Airline. Latif, our houseboat attendant, was very sweet but served very spicy paranthas (In-dian shallow-fried bread) in the break-fast. While boating around in the Dal, do visit the floating market and buy eats, such as corn on the cob, from the floating vendors even if you are not in a mood for one as your gesture may feed his family that night. You can en-joy good Indian vegetarian food at a very reasonable price, just off the Dal gate (be prepared to wait, as the small place attracts a large number of cus-tomers and there is a queue inspite of a very rapid turnover and an extremely quick service). For a fabulous view of the valley, drive up to the 4th BC shankaracharya temple on top of the Takht-e-suleiman hill but be prepared to climb full 200 steps. For those with weak knees, pari mahal (fairy palace) is an easier alternative as one can drive right upto the terraced gardens. You must also pay your obeisance to the Almighty at the Hazratbal mosque on the nagin side of the Dal Lake – use one of the caps provided there before you enter the sanctum sanctorum. In spite of widely prevalent poverty, people are simple – our shikara walah (house boat owner) asked for bakshish (tip) for beedi (smoke). Earlier, when we asked him if we could leave our bags in the shikara – ‘is it safe?’, he replied with a smile ‘we may cheat (in

terms of overcharging, which they cer-tainly do) but would never steal’. The quoted prices are always high (some-times many times high) and bargain-ing and haggling is in order but please keep in mind that they earn only few months in the year – in consideration of abject poverty prevalent there, please do not mind overpaying and be liberal in giving tips also.Trip to the city is incomplete without a visit to the mughal gardens (remem-ber that they are closed on Fridays) – Chashm-e-shahi (royal springs), ni-shat bagh (garden of pleasure) and shalimar (abode of love); srinagar also boasts of a newly added tulip garden but they flower in April only. gulmarg (112 Km from srinagar) boasts of the highest gondola (cable car) ride in the world - it covers a slope distance of about 2.4 Km in 8 minutes; the pony owners, however, dislike it as it has encroached on their living. We were disappointed as the second phase of the gondola ride (Kongdoor to Affarwat) was closed for repair/ mainte-nance but our loss was more than com-pensated by a pony ride to Khilanmarg and a sledge slide down the glacier with a breathtaking view. When I en-gaged my pony owner into a conversa-tion, as we were riding from gulmarg to Khilanmarg (a distance of about 2.5 Km), he mentioned how business suf-fers everytime there is a trouble in the valley (I wonder if the pony’s response will be exactly opposite as less tour-ists would mean less work for the poor creature). Don’t forget to buy a box of cherries and strawberries but grab them early as you are going up as you may not find them as you come down.We were a bit unhappy with Indian Air-lines for not taking us from srinagar to Leh by flight but instead taking us there by road – a journey over 2 full days with a night halt at Kargil. That, however, turned out to be the most enjoying part of the entire trip. The valley, with its paddy plantations, soon gave way to the green hills which took us via gan-darbal, Kangan and gund to Kargil. We would have missed the breathtak-ing scenic landscape if we had instead flown from srinagar to Leh.The Border Roads organisation (BRo), which builds and manages the roads in the difficult terrain of Jammu & Kash-mir, has not only ensured that you can drive right upto Khardung La at 18,380

ft but also instructs you to drive safe. We saw JCBs digging into the rocky mountains but at many places the la-borers were working with bare hands also – it may be a good idea to carry some extra food and drinks for them. While driving, you will see many advi-sory/ cautioning slogans. In addition to the usual ones such as speed thrills but kills, safety saves lives, better late than never, there are several unique and original ones also.We were advised to carry food on our srinagar – Kargil - Leh journey but Coke, Lays and Maggi are omnipres-ent – Khaltsi, 140 Km from srinagar, offers some good restaurants to have a cup of tea and snacks. The island re-sort on the Indus River on way from sri-nagar to Kargil is a picturesque spot to stop and click photos. one must stop at sonamarg at 8,950 ft with Thajiwas glacier in the backdrop which is cov-ered with snow all around the year.

There were rough stretches of roads through glaciers between sonamarg and Chumri on way to Kargil. Just be-fore the Lamayuru monastery, however, they give way to tarred black silky road and one is tempted to speed. We drove at 100 km/ hour on a long straight road on a vast stretch of plain plateau on top of the mountains. After nimmu, about 30 km before Leh, is the famous mag-netic hill where a vehicle parked in neutral gear moves up the slope on its own. The srinagar - Kargil - Leh jour-ney by road with innumerable hairpin and corkscrew bends and ridges along

deep gorges is for you only if you love adventure; it is not for the weakhearts (close your eyes if you are one). At several places, one has to stop for the army convoys which have the right of the way (as also the vehicles going up and the herds of sheep). As we move on the landscape changed from pris-tine green of Kashmir to dry barren of Ladakh as also the faces, and the tin-domed mosques gave way to the gompas (Budhist temples). During the whole day drive from Kargil to Leh be on the look out for several Indian ver-sions of Mount Rushmores.sUVs are the best vehicles for the mountain roads (though we saw plenty of small cars such as Maruti 800s and Hyundai santros also competing with them). It is crucial to have a good pi-lot (driver) as the roads (especially the curves) can be tricky. Please make sure that he has ensured that vehicle has a stepney (with air) as a puncture repair

* Tips for the visit – Have a pair of sports shoes with good grip to do some trek-king. It would be worth investing in a good digital camera to capture the pic-turesque beauty of the valley – you may get tired of taking pictures but click-able scenes will never end; we could see families that were leaving for their journey back home taking last minute photos (though, I am sure they must have already clicked many) as they re-alized they may not have an opportuni-ty to return to the ‘heaven’ again in their lifetime. Carry skin cream/ lotion, chap-stick/ lipgloss, sunglasses, woolens/ jackets (as weather can suddenly turn cold). Carry medicines for motion sick-ness and vomiting and pick up a few vomiting bags from your flight. To avoid high altitude sickness – especially for the elderly and those with heart and lung disease – acclimatisation, is im-portant. Rest on day one, drink lots of water, have light food and avoid alco-hol. Diamox (taken after medical con-sultation) helps. In any case, I feel that the hypoxia (lack of oxygen) is not due to the high altitude but because of the new breathtaking views which emerge at each curve of the road – however, beware of the blind curves as dan-ger lurks behind them (‘Don’t test the curves, feel them’ as the BRo says).

Chinese New Year, BeijingChinese new Year or Lunar new Year is celebrated around much of the globe. Yet, you can’t beat the party that takes place in one of China’s ma-jor cities. Beijing being China’s capital hosts a massive celebration for this important holiday. Here you can ex-pect an abundance of colour, decora-tion and noise as the city buzzes with excitement. The new Year is more of a family festival for the Chinese and cul-tures of Chinese descent. Yet, being a tourist during this time allows you to experience the amplified atmosphere. The date for the excitement varies each year from January 19th and February 20th. In the weeks pre to its commencement decoration is under-way with chunlián (spring couplets) pasted to doors, vivid red streaming down alleys and streets (red is a lucky colour for the Chinese), glittering gold fringing edges, door gods hanging throughout the town and other splash-es of vibrant colours. Tuna TossingFestivalFor a bit of fishy, family fun head to the Tunarama festival in Port Lincoln over the long weekend for Australian Day. This festival began in 1962 and pro-vides free entertainment, competitions and contests organised for all age groups. Its original aim was to pro-mote the tuna industry, which began emerging in the town in the early 60’s. Tuna fishing is now one of the town’s biggest industries and so the festival stands as a celebration. The most in-

triguing part of the festival has to be the tuna throwing. Yes, that’s right - tuna throwing! Contestants in four cat-egories take on an olympic hammer thrower’s technique in attempt to cast a tuna fish weighing up to 22 pounds as far as they can. The prize is 1000 Australian dollars and so impels con-tenders to aim far. sean Carlin, an ex- olympic hammer thrower holds the record for the longest toss at 37.23 metres set in 1998. Festival Famadihana or Turning of the Bones, MadagascarCrowds of Africans dancing passion-ately to traditional music is an inter-esting and entertaining sight to see, but observing a Famadihana (funer-ary tradition) in Madagascar you will be even more intrigued. Dead body remains are wrapped up in scarves and heaved upon dancing arms. The corpses flay up, down, over and back to the live music in a unique ritual. Most would find this particularly pecu-liar but for the people of Madagascar it is a tradition which makes perfect sense. The custom is based upon a belief that the spirits of the dead finally join the world of the ancestors after the body’s complete decomposition and appropriate sacraments, which may take many years. This tradition has be-come regular and usually takes place once every seven years. It brings together extended families as they come together in celebration of their loved ones. The festival celebrates life, portraying a rich and diverse cul-ture. It may look very strange but the Madagascans emit a great ambience and joy during the performance.

Frightful Flights

With quite a few accidents through-out its history this nail biter emanates an air of danger. That’s right, Toncon-tin International Airport (TgU) locat-ed in Tegucigalpa, Honduras is one of the most extreme airports in the world. so why does Toncontin cause so much fret? Perhaps its the nearby mountainous terrain or its short run-way of a mere 1,862 m in length? The latter aspect makes an impossible landing for the larger of jets whilst the smaller are left to contend with a frightening descent. A notable trage-dy at this airport was the Boeing 727-200 which crashed into a mountain in 1989. Indeed a hill was bulldozed in the early 1990s making the approach

to TgU less dangerous but it still remains an interesting ride. For in-stance an airplane landing at runway 01 at TgU must circle inside the ba-sin below mountaintops. As you can imagine the sight of looking up at the wing to catch glimpse of trees and mountains whilst being ridged on the other direction is beyond gripping. As the plane lines up for the runway it must cross the fence separating the airport property and the highway and make immediate contact. Along with the short runway comes a downhill slope allowing little braking time. I’m sure everybody abides by the seat-belt rule on this flight!

This airport may not thread through mountains or contend with extreme weather but it fits

into the scariest of airports and likened to a space shuttle take off. of course the air-port is no where near similar to a nAsA site but the feeling you get inside the air-craft taking off will have you feeling you are heading for space. Why? You ask. The airport is situated in near proximity to com-munities and therefore contains the strict-est of aircraft access and noise monitor-ing programs in the UsA, if not the world. Pilots must being their takeoffs close to full power, then inline quickly and steeply before reducing the engine power. It may seem like the engine has been turned off and so causes fretting passengers. How-ever spokespeople for the airport assure that safety is always maintained and the capabilities of the plane allow for such procedures. still it can’t be relaxing listen-ing to an engine turn silent as you drop; no matter how much pre warning you get.

In a way, the airports dramatic landing location is fitting; new Zealand is after all known for its adrenaline rushes so what better way to prepare yourself than a first time taste of the country’s enthu-siasm for dangerous ventures. Furthermore the airport has produced a new look for the airport with the title ‘Wild at Heart’ as its brand name. Your heart will surely be beating wildly after a Wellington touchdown!

If you thought looping through mountains was unnerving then this one will have you terrified. Passengers descend-ing and ascending to and from La Aurora International are in for an interesting ride. The plane must weave through mountains at a high altitude and confront a steep drop at the end of the runway. so far it is sounding rather treach-erous but how about doing all this whilst spinning over a

series of volcanoes, and not just dormant.....active! The Pacaya volcano caused La Aurora to close due to volcanic ash fall which pelted over the city and airport. It all sounds very risky but the views at night as you crusade over dark valleys and threatening volcanoes will have you erupting with excitement and fear!

The frozen hot chocolate was created in partnership with Euphoria new York, the luxury jeweller that supplies the serving goblets lined with edible gold as well as the 0.2 ounces of 23 - karat gold sprinkled over each dessert.

The Frozen Haute Chocolate itself is a blend of 28 of the world’s most expensive and exotic cocoas.

The sundae is topped with whipped cream covered with more gold and a side of La Madeline au Truffle from Knip-schildt Chocolatier, which sells for $2,600 a pound.

It is eaten with a gold spoon dec-orated with white and chocolate-colored diamonds, which can also be taken home.
