LETTERs

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

My wife and I have always been fascinated of the oceans and seas of the world. Early 2009, we had our first romantic experience in MSC Cruise whilst celebrating our first wedding anniversary. Since your October issue tackled on this topic regarding cruise experiences and must try holiday getaways, we couldn’t help but be nostalgic. Indeed, your magazine is worth having in our household. It’s a must-have for us! More power to your team.

Editor:

My friends and I have always been frequenting Paris for over the past years. Paris is rich in history and culture more than being the romantic city in the world. Thanks to your informative mag I told my pals to even grab their own copies and write our wonderful experiences there. It’s the best we have had so far!

Dear Editor,

I am an Asian gal living in the Middle East and sure it’s a pride you always cover our region. But what caught my attention is your topic about festivals to watch out for. It’s exotic and thrill-ing! I sure want to catch these events by 2012; I love Beyond Xperience!

The graceful rhythmic dances of fountain entice you to watch it more beautifully whilst unfolding before your eyes along with perfectly in sync with repertoires from

renowned sopranos and tenors that amazingly captivates anyone. The Dubai Fountain, a must see in tourist guide when visit-ing Dubai, set on the 30 acre Burj Khalifa Lake. This majes-tically design fountain shoots water jets as high as 500 feet (150 meters). The beautifully made solemn spot oversees and is in the middle of metropolis urbane atmosphere per-fectly will soothe anyone’s mechanism of escaping the buzz and glitz of the city.Designed by WET and dubbed as one of the best made fountain show ever of 900 feet with five beautiful circles of

different sizes of two central arcs, the fountain is luxuriously displayed of arcs, shoots, super lights and rich colored projectors creating a mesmerizing wide visual spectrum of abstract attractions. Even the beam of lights that proudly shines upward from the fountain can be seen as far as 20 miles away, tagged as the brightest ever in the Middle East and most probably in the world! The wavelength of the fountain has abled me to escape from my stress; hypnotizing me like I was one of the foun-tains sprinkling waters to those spectators. Even the scenes around this spot are positively crafted as well. Anyone can quickly unwind with the near food shops and malls around. The breathtaking experience of dancing fountain is surely worth a try.

A truly unique lifestyle xperience

set on the stunning saadiyat Beach, where the azure waters of the gulf softly lap against the pristine white sands of the shore, a new beach club is now offering

its members an unrivalled experience of luxury, relaxation and bespoke hospitality. The Monte-Carlo Beach Club, saadiyat is now open following a soft launch earlier in september, bringing a slice of the Riviera to Abu Dhabi. The Monte-Carlo lifestyle is built around the concepts of ex-

clusivity, relaxation and chic living. The Monte-Carlo Beach Club, saadiyat, is set in the heart of saadiyat Beach, where it offers a vast and cool swimming pool where one can bask in the sunshine or relax in private cabanas. A short stroll over a wooden walkway takes guests to the beach, where they can take a dip in the shimmering blue sea. Visiting the club will give many the first opportunity to walk on the pris-tine sands of saadiyat Beach; watching the sunset in this setting is a true delight to the senses.

Coral Castle

We invite you to experience something sensational, something incredible! Probably it is homage to unrequited love or perhaps it relates to ancient

sciences that defy gravity or it exemplifies raw human determination! You will be mystified forever after exploring the one and only Coral Castle!

Millions have seen this on the popular TV show “That’s In-credible”, mentioned in Ripley’s Believe It or not and even Rock star Billy Idol wrote his hit song “sweet sixteen” about Ed’s lost love. It was Ed who built his beloved Coral Castle. And till date no one knows how he built it as it was built in the cover of the night and in secrecy. From 1923 to 1951, Edward Leedskalnin single-handedly with home made tools carved over 1,100 tons of coral rock, and his unknown pro-

cess has created one of the world’s most mysterious ac-complishments. Did he have supernatural powers?

Today, you can tour the Coral Castle with knowledgeable guides speaking English, spanish, French or german avail-able. open every day, the Coral Castle Museum welcomes visitors from around the world to explore this enchanting south Florida destination. Features of the Coral Castle Mu-seum includes a 9-ton gate that moves with just a touch of the finger, a Polaris telescope and functioning rocking chairs – all made entirely of stone!

Come Xperience this unusual and amazing stone sculp-tured garden. Ed labor of love is absolutely incredible, truly captivating!

Irazu ParkIrazu Park is the most visited national Park in Costa Rica.

The summit of Volcán Irazú is near tree-line, and the wind and volcanic activity conspire to give the effect of a

moonscape. There are several craters rimmed by gnarled, scorched trees, and lined with brilliantly colored rain fed mineral pools.

The last time Volcán Irazú awoke was in the first half of the 1960’s, when, for four years it showered the residents of Cartago and san José with ash, clogged the air with smoke, and sent glowing boulders rolling down its sides. The next eruption can’t be predicted with much accuracy, but currently the only activity in the crater is from fumaroles releasing toxic steam. Irazú has erupted frequently in his-

torical times — at least 23 times since its first historically recorded eruption in 1723. Its most famous recent erup-tion began in 1963 and continued until 1965 showering the capital sanJose and much of the central highlands of Costa Rica with ash.

The best time to get a view of the crater is early in the morn-ing between December and April. The Irazu Volcan due to it extreme elevation often above the clouds, enabling the sun to shine on the crater.

around 1,300 meters above sea level? It’s not for the faint hearted. Xperience reaching and returning from the Lost City - a journey lasting six exciting days. letproof fabric is now available from Harrods’s of London. Caballero has been dubbed the “Armani of armor” His proprietary lightweight, removable ballistic panels allow for maximum flexibility and discretion while providing protec-tion from weaponry ranging from a 9mm pistol to an Uzi. Just the thing for riding in the back of your new Maybach Landaulet. It comes in three levels of protection. since the linen-covered polo is by necessity quite thin, considerable skill and expense is involved in crafting it. Harrods is the first and only retail outlet for Caballero’s line outside of south and Central America. However, U.s. residents can order custom-made garments directly from Caballero’s Bogota atelier, should one they wish for a bul-letproof cashmere topcoat, for instance.

since this item is a custom order, there are no RETURns oR EXCHAngEs. Please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery.

Come folks, xperience an open flame rolling down your back on alcohol doused cotton. It will hurt a lot and you will feel the sickly sweet scent of skin

being scorched… an xperience like nothing before – and all your stiff muscles and pain will just burn away into oblivion. no exaggeration - all this happens when you experience the Fire Doctor of Taipei

Master Hsieh Ching-long uses open flame to get rid of pain. He has created fire therapy after years of medical training in Beijing, applying his knowledge of traditional medicine, martial arts and ‘pyromania’ to invent a power-ful treatment for muscle aches and sports injuries. To heal with pain says Master Hsieh Ching requires years of mari-tal trainings to channel one’s inner energy and the use of hands as iron.

How does he untie the thick knots in one’s back? How does he relieve back pain? He starts by using glass cups to rea-lign one’s energy. The back is coated with a brown paste of herbs, covered with a towel and ‘spiritized with alcohol. The lights are then lowered and a blow torch is ignited and lo! one’s back is flamed up and one experiences intense heat and probably great fear. The scorched skin is sub-jected to the vice like grip of the ‘Fire Doctor’ and what follows is his deep tissue massage which signals the end of the treatment. The back becomes bright red but is free from burn marks and as one steps out of the clinic, a magi-cal transformation takes place – the stiff muscles and the back pain dissipate into thin air.

You will love your back being set ablaze and will be thrilled to experience the Fire Doctor of Taipei – your pain will burn away.

READER’s XPERIEnCE

Beyond Xperience reader Dr. V. K. Kapoor from Lucknow India, current-ly in Abu Dhabi UAE, recently went on journey of his life time, here he would like to share his experiences during his trip with our readers. Delhi - srinagar flight had a mixed crowd – middle income group fami-lies gazing at the cold fumes jetting out of the overhead panels and ex-cited with various amenities, includ-ing individual TV screen at each seat (though no programme had started as yet), standing and talking aloud to members of their group seated several

rows away, exchanging seats and say-ing prayers aloud as the plane took off. There were few government offic-ers (frequent flyers) who, totally uncon-cerned with the surroundings, settled into their seats, put on their reading glasses and submerged themselves into the recent bestsellers. There was an obviously foreign returned young techie with his diamond-studded wife, sporting branded sunglasses flipped on her forehead, asking the cabin crew for English newspapers and business magazines.Accommodation in srinagar in golden Lily, a deluxe houseboat on the pictur-

esque Dal Lake, was part of the itiner-ary planned by the Airline. Latif, our houseboat attendant, was very sweet but served very spicy paranthas (In-dian shallow-fried bread) in the break-fast. While boating around in the Dal, do visit the floating market and buy eats, such as corn on the cob, from the floating vendors even if you are not in a mood for one as your gesture may feed his family that night. You can en-joy good Indian vegetarian food at a very reasonable price, just off the Dal gate (be prepared to wait, as the small place attracts a large number of cus-tomers and there is a queue inspite of a very rapid turnover and an extremely quick service). For a fabulous view of the valley, drive up to the 4th BC shankaracharya temple on top of the Takht-e-suleiman hill but be prepared to climb full 200 steps. For those with weak knees, pari mahal (fairy palace) is an easier alternative as one can drive right upto the terraced gardens. You must also pay your obeisance to the Almighty at the Hazratbal mosque on the nagin side of the Dal Lake – use one of the caps provided there before you enter the sanctum sanctorum. In spite of widely prevalent poverty, people are simple – our shikara walah (house boat owner) asked for bakshish (tip) for beedi (smoke). Earlier, when we asked him if we could leave our bags in the shikara – ‘is it safe?’, he replied with a smile ‘we may cheat (in

terms of overcharging, which they cer-tainly do) but would never steal’. The quoted prices are always high (some-times many times high) and bargain-ing and haggling is in order but please keep in mind that they earn only few months in the year – in consideration of abject poverty prevalent there, please do not mind overpaying and be liberal in giving tips also.Trip to the city is incomplete without a visit to the mughal gardens (remem-ber that they are closed on Fridays) – Chashm-e-shahi (royal springs), ni-shat bagh (garden of pleasure) and shalimar (abode of love); srinagar also boasts of a newly added tulip garden but they flower in April only. gulmarg (112 Km from srinagar) boasts of the highest gondola (cable car) ride in the world - it covers a slope distance of about 2.4 Km in 8 minutes; the pony owners, however, dislike it as it has encroached on their living. We were disappointed as the second phase of the gondola ride (Kongdoor to Affarwat) was closed for repair/ mainte-nance but our loss was more than com-pensated by a pony ride to Khilanmarg and a sledge slide down the glacier with a breathtaking view. When I en-gaged my pony owner into a conversa-tion, as we were riding from gulmarg to Khilanmarg (a distance of about 2.5 Km), he mentioned how business suf-fers everytime there is a trouble in the valley (I wonder if the pony’s response will be exactly opposite as less tour-ists would mean less work for the poor creature). Don’t forget to buy a box of cherries and strawberries but grab them early as you are going up as you may not find them as you come down.We were a bit unhappy with Indian Air-lines for not taking us from srinagar to Leh by flight but instead taking us there by road – a journey over 2 full days with a night halt at Kargil. That, however, turned out to be the most enjoying part of the entire trip. The valley, with its paddy plantations, soon gave way to the green hills which took us via gan-darbal, Kangan and gund to Kargil. We would have missed the breathtak-ing scenic landscape if we had instead flown from srinagar to Leh.The Border Roads organisation (BRo), which builds and manages the roads in the difficult terrain of Jammu & Kash-mir, has not only ensured that you can drive right upto Khardung La at 18,380

ft but also instructs you to drive safe. We saw JCBs digging into the rocky mountains but at many places the la-borers were working with bare hands also – it may be a good idea to carry some extra food and drinks for them. While driving, you will see many advi-sory/ cautioning slogans. In addition to the usual ones such as speed thrills but kills, safety saves lives, better late than never, there are several unique and original ones also.We were advised to carry food on our srinagar – Kargil - Leh journey but Coke, Lays and Maggi are omnipres-ent – Khaltsi, 140 Km from srinagar, offers some good restaurants to have a cup of tea and snacks. The island re-sort on the Indus River on way from sri-nagar to Kargil is a picturesque spot to stop and click photos. one must stop at sonamarg at 8,950 ft with Thajiwas glacier in the backdrop which is cov-ered with snow all around the year.

There were rough stretches of roads through glaciers between sonamarg and Chumri on way to Kargil. Just be-fore the Lamayuru monastery, however, they give way to tarred black silky road and one is tempted to speed. We drove at 100 km/ hour on a long straight road on a vast stretch of plain plateau on top of the mountains. After nimmu, about 30 km before Leh, is the famous mag-netic hill where a vehicle parked in neutral gear moves up the slope on its own. The srinagar - Kargil - Leh jour-ney by road with innumerable hairpin and corkscrew bends and ridges along

deep gorges is for you only if you love adventure; it is not for the weakhearts (close your eyes if you are one). At several places, one has to stop for the army convoys which have the right of the way (as also the vehicles going up and the herds of sheep). As we move on the landscape changed from pris-tine green of Kashmir to dry barren of Ladakh as also the faces, and the tin-domed mosques gave way to the gompas (Budhist temples). During the whole day drive from Kargil to Leh be on the look out for several Indian ver-sions of Mount Rushmores.sUVs are the best vehicles for the mountain roads (though we saw plenty of small cars such as Maruti 800s and Hyundai santros also competing with them). It is crucial to have a good pi-lot (driver) as the roads (especially the curves) can be tricky. Please make sure that he has ensured that vehicle has a stepney (with air) as a puncture repair

facility may be miles away. Hill drivers are much more co-operative and ad-justing cf. those in the plains who are usually adamant and always in a fight-ing mood. Manners and etiquettes of hill driving are different from those in the plains e.g. honking is encouraged (especially at the curves). At Mulbek, 40 Km from Kargil, we made a 10-minute stop to pray at a (suppos-edly) 2,000 year old temple built by King Kanishka. We also passed by the small but magnificent gurudwara Pathar sahib. You don’t have to go all the way down to southern India to cel-

ebrate your marriage anniversary on a beach nor spend thousands of rupees to book an expensive resort to have a private beach – after nurla and before Uletokpo the Bajra Battu beach on the right bank of the Indus river is all yours for free - just carry beverage of your choice and a pair of glasses – stones that tumbled down the hill last evening will serve as table and chairs.our accommodation in Leh (11,500 feet) was at Hotel singge Palace. We were disappointed by its entrance through a narrow lane but were heart-ened as the small lobby led to its beautiful lawns (where we enjoyed our breakfasts in the morning sun) and spacious wood-furnished rooms. The 13th AD Hemis monastery at 13,500 feet is one of the biggest in Leh – don’t miss the museum. The rich colorful Thiksey monastery is made of stone, wood and clay – dark quiet in-teriors are semi-lit by Jugnu solar cells. As the monks with cropped hair and in maroon and saffron robes sing the hymns (om ma ni padme hum) with pipe, cymbal and drum, butter tea is served to them by child monks. As you stand there, your abnormal TMT, falling nAV of your shares, arrogance of your CEo, your daughter missing admission to university by a whisker, all fade away and a tranquil peace envelopes your mind, body and soul. The dilapidated shey palace with clifts and caves and colorful frescoes, sindhu Darshan sthal on the banks of the mighty Indus river and the main market of Leh with its handicrafts, thanka paintings, gifts, souvenirs and antiques are also worth a visit. shanti stupa on top of a hill of-fers a panoramic view of the 16th AD

9 storied Leh Palace and castle at the Tsemo hill against the backdrop of dry rocky mountains with snow capped peaks.A visit to the Khardungla Pass which boasts of the highest motorable road in the world at 18,380 feet needs a spe-cial permit which is checked at south Pullu check post (15,300 ft). on way at ganglas (13,200 feet) one can see a frog shaped rock aptly called the Khar-dungla Frog. Leading on to the nubra Valley, the small ‘rooftop’ Pass has a gompa, a temple, a medical camp, tel-ephone tower, dish TV and a souvenir shop.A panoramic view of the Pangong lake (14,200 feet) - a part of India and China – out of the left window seat on the Leh

– Delhi flight was an apt culmination of the very exciting and enjoying.

* Tips for the visit – Have a pair of sports shoes with good grip to do some trek-king. It would be worth investing in a good digital camera to capture the pic-turesque beauty of the valley – you may get tired of taking pictures but click-able scenes will never end; we could see families that were leaving for their journey back home taking last minute photos (though, I am sure they must have already clicked many) as they re-alized they may not have an opportuni-ty to return to the ‘heaven’ again in their lifetime. Carry skin cream/ lotion, chap-stick/ lipgloss, sunglasses, woolens/ jackets (as weather can suddenly turn cold). Carry medicines for motion sick-ness and vomiting and pick up a few vomiting bags from your flight. To avoid high altitude sickness – especially for the elderly and those with heart and lung disease – acclimatisation, is im-portant. Rest on day one, drink lots of water, have light food and avoid alco-hol. Diamox (taken after medical con-sultation) helps. In any case, I feel that the hypoxia (lack of oxygen) is not due to the high altitude but because of the new breathtaking views which emerge at each curve of the road – however, beware of the blind curves as dan-ger lurks behind them (‘Don’t test the curves, feel them’ as the BRo says).

Any country becomes a tourist hotspot if it has a history and heritage worth discovering. Another feather in the cap is the modern day well-being techniques or services it can of-fer. ‘Beyond Xperience’ unveils one such destination which is a complete package in itself for a tourist from any genre. Czech is definitely a country that has antiquity, ethos, night-life and modern means of attaining serenity. It is the only country that can charm with having eleven UnEsCo sites in a single country.

The Czech state, formerly known as Bohemia, was formed in the late 9th century as a small duchy around Prague. The traditional English name “Bohemia” has been derived from Latin ‘Boiohaemum,’ which means ‘home of the Boii.’ The current name comes from the Czech endonym Cechy using the antiquated spelling Czechy, identical with the Pol-ish one. In november 1989, Czechoslovakia returned to a liberal democracy through the peaceful ‘Velvet Revolution’. However, slovak national aspirations strengthened and on 1 January 1993, the country peacefully split into the inde-pendent Czech Republic and slovakia. Phytogeographi-cally, the Czech Republic belongs to the Central European province of the Circumboreal Region, within the Boreal Kingdom. Ruzyne International Airport in Prague is the main international airport in the country. In 2010, it handled 11.6 million passengers, which makes it the busiest airport in Central and Eastern Europe. In total, Czech Republic has 46 airports with paved runways, six of which provide inter-national air services, in Brno, Karlovy Vary, Mošnov (near ostrava), Pardubice, Prague and Uherské Hradište.

In order for tourists to easily gain their bearings, the Czech Republic is divided into 17 tourist regions. These divisions do not copy the institutional borders, but place an empha-sis on the related tourism offer. The most visited region is the capital, Prague, but it would be unfortunate not to ven-ture elsewhere and relish in some of the Czech Republics other treats. You will only learn what Central Europe is re-ally like after visiting Bohemian Paradise, south Bohemia, south Moravia and the West Bohemia spas. Each region is completely different and each provides a rich and varied spectrum of tourist activities.

Prague, the capital city of the country is also known as the world’s party capital and has an amazing nightlife. one of the most famous cultural site in the city is Prague’s Castle. It holds a number of records. The largest castle in the world being one, entered in the guinness Book of Records. It is also the most visited Czech monument among tourists. It is the most important of Czech castles, because from time immemorial it has been the dwelling of sovereigns, and cur-rently the President. In concern for aesthetics it is the most beautiful castle in the Czech Republic. Prague Castle is un-paralleled in the country in all respects and visiting it is a ‘duty’ for all tourists.

The old Town Astronomical Clock dating from the 15th century is one of the most treasured and best-known of Prague’s historical sites and should not be missed. It can be found on the side of the gothic tower of the old Town Hall. The Astronomical Clock is a one of the best examples of Czech gothic technology and a prized work of art.

on the hour every hour between 9.00 and 21.00 small statues of the 12 apostles appear in small windows at the top of the clock. on either side of the clock a skeleton, a Turk, a Miser and a figure representing Vanity come to life. When all the apostles have pre-sented themselves to the crowds be-low, a cockerel crows and the clock chimes the hour.

According to legend, Prague’s coun-cillors had the eyes of the creator of the Astronomical Clock taken out so that he could not repeat the feat else-where!

The Astronomical Clock shows four different times: Central European time - this is marked by the sun-arm travelling round the Roman numerals around the inner edge of the clock face.old Bohemian time - according to this way of timekeeping, the new day be-gins at sunset. It is marked by gold gothic numerals on the outer ring of the main clock face.

Babylonian time - the day lasts from sunrise to sunset meaning in sum-mer the days are longer than in win-ter. Prague’s Astronomical Clock is the

only one in the world which shows this time.stellar time - This is shown in Roman numerals. Below the main clock is an-other calendar disk which shows the days, weeks and months.

since the earliest of periods differ-ent types of beauty techniques and theories are being followed to main-tain one’s natural look to stay beau-tiful longer. Various natural herbs and other natural ingredients are ap-plied in this process. Different natural agents like water, clay, minerals etc and swimming pool chemicals play a remarkable role in this process. This is the best way to maintain one’s natural look without any long term side effect. spas, which is considered to be one of the best ways to attain serenity in the modern days has various benefits which has increased the popularity of this process over the years.Importance of spa

- It helps to relief body pain- It helps in proper blood circulation- Enhances body energy- Helps in better body movement- Relaxes the body muscles- Detoxifies the body- Reduces stress- Helps to lower body fat- Helps to prevent hypertension and blood pressure

Czech is a renowned spa destination that offers various conventional and non - conventional spa programs. The two most prominent reasons for going for a spa amongst others are Beauty enhancement and stress relieving. Do you spend all your time at work, are you overwhelmed by information overload, do you need to just switch off? set out to a spa and try out one of the programmes focused on com-bating stress and exhaustion. over the course of only a few days, this will help you to recharge your batteries, regain that lost vitality and charge you up with positive energy.

Management programmes; The spas also cater for those who do not want to or cannot leave their duties at work behind for a long period of time and who need to get a substantial amount of rest for at least a couple of days,

or who just want to be pampered. Management programmes have been prepared precisely for them, combin-ing a high level of hotel services with relaxation procedures. Their aim is improvement of mental and physical wellbeing, without the need to funda-mentally interrupt the regular working regime. Management programmes do of course include the possibility of re-maining in contact with your company thanks to a WiFi connection. short-term programmes are offered to managers with their partners or alone, and the offer of services is adapted to fully suit their requirements. For example, in Lázne Libverda they of-fer various anti-stress and regenera-tion wraps, such as a wrap in banana leaves or a chocolate ritual. Lázne Ve-lichovky has prepared a week of relax-ation for exhausted managers, where they can have a rest and recharge their batteries with the aid of reflex therapy on the soles of the feet, In-dian head massage, special baths or

yoga. stays intended for all those who are exposed to great mental stress at work, those who work sitting down and those who work at a computer are also offered by Mariánské Lázne, Pode-brady and Mšené.

To add to the spa programmes is the romantic spa. The spas in Czech have long romantic colonnades, green parks and white pavilions, fountains with flowing crisp clear water. The spas in the Czech Republic have an inexhaustible number of romantic lo-cations and natural sceneries, where fans of charming little corners of towns and those who prefer remote places in the middle of the countryside are ca-tered for. Use your stay in a spa to gain some unforgettable memories or plac-es to return to every year. Everybody is catered for here, whether they want to enjoy a romantic weekend with their partner, celebrate Valentine’s Day or an anniversary, spend their wedding or honeymoon there, give as a kind

gift voucher or show their children the beauties of the country.

Before all that relaxing, it is good to ensure your physicality is in shape. The alpha and omega of a healthy lifestyle is exercise, but not many peo-ple find time for this during a packed working week. The spa is the perfect place for this. Yes it may seem daunt-ing to some, especially after reading about all that relaxation. Yet after par-ticipating in one of the copious options in sporting activities your heart will be pounding and your adrenaline run-ning. now its time to reward yourself with some well-deserved spa relaxa-tion.

so it seems the Czech Republic has a lot to offer. It stands as an absolutely delightful getaway to rewind and re-vitalize oneself with the amusing his-tory and architecture, party hard and finally relax with a soothing and most suited spa.

Chinese New Year, BeijingChinese new Year or Lunar new Year is celebrated around much of the globe. Yet, you can’t beat the party that takes place in one of China’s ma-jor cities. Beijing being China’s capital hosts a massive celebration for this important holiday. Here you can ex-pect an abundance of colour, decora-tion and noise as the city buzzes with excitement. The new Year is more of a family festival for the Chinese and cul-tures of Chinese descent. Yet, being a tourist during this time allows you to experience the amplified atmosphere. The date for the excitement varies each year from January 19th and February 20th. In the weeks pre to its commencement decoration is under-way with chunlián (spring couplets) pasted to doors, vivid red streaming down alleys and streets (red is a lucky colour for the Chinese), glittering gold fringing edges, door gods hanging throughout the town and other splash-es of vibrant colours. Relations and work colleagues exchange red enve-lopes filled with money and the mes-sage to ‘make money’ becomes ap-parent. At night fireworks are launched everywhere and you won’t be able to hide from the noise. Every nook and cranny expels sparkling hues into the air and this goes on for days. It is easy to see this is China’s biggest celebra-tion each year.

St Patrick’s Day FestivalWe have all heard the saying, ‘paint the town red’ but have you ever heard the saying, ‘paint the town green?’ on March 17 people from Ireland and numerous other countries flurry together to celebrate saint Patrick’s Day or Paddy’s Day. spirits are high as parades of green wash through

cities and towns in celebration of this religious holiday. saint Patrick is the most commonly recognised saints of Ireland and this day commemorates his life and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. It is a day of fun and joy with anything associated with Irish such as good luck, shamrocks, and green and gold. Irish music resonates through-out the streets, rhythmic feet flip in the air with Irish jigs and people’s clothing and faces are embellished with sham-rocks. Although the festival is native to Ireland many other countries party just as hard. new York for instance throws the biggest festivity. The four other largest parades are held in Dub-lin, Manchester, Montreal and Boston. Many other cities just as enthusiastic about the fun and celebration include London, Paris, Rome, Munich, Co-penhagen, Hong Kong and Chicago, which are famous for dying its river green for the celebration. Fun for the kids is included in games, crafts and face painting. It is a day where every-one can become Irish for the day and join in on the ‘craic’ (a typical Irish say-ing for good fun) and excitement.

Tuna TossingFestivalFor a bit of fishy, family fun head to the Tunarama festival in Port Lincoln over the long weekend for Australian Day. This festival began in 1962 and pro-vides free entertainment, competitions and contests organised for all age groups. Its original aim was to pro-mote the tuna industry, which began emerging in the town in the early 60’s. Tuna fishing is now one of the town’s biggest industries and so the festival stands as a celebration. The most in-

triguing part of the festival has to be the tuna throwing. Yes, that’s right - tuna throwing! Contestants in four cat-egories take on an olympic hammer thrower’s technique in attempt to cast a tuna fish weighing up to 22 pounds as far as they can. The prize is 1000 Australian dollars and so impels con-tenders to aim far. sean Carlin, an ex- olympic hammer thrower holds the record for the longest toss at 37.23 metres set in 1998. If you fancy your-self as a tuna tosser and reckon you have what it takes, join in on the fishy festivity at Tunarama.

Festival Famadihana or Turning of the Bones, MadagascarCrowds of Africans dancing passion-ately to traditional music is an inter-esting and entertaining sight to see, but observing a Famadihana (funer-ary tradition) in Madagascar you will be even more intrigued. Dead body remains are wrapped up in scarves and heaved upon dancing arms. The corpses flay up, down, over and back to the live music in a unique ritual. Most would find this particularly pecu-liar but for the people of Madagascar it is a tradition which makes perfect sense. The custom is based upon a belief that the spirits of the dead finally join the world of the ancestors after the body’s complete decomposition and appropriate sacraments, which may take many years. This tradition has be-come regular and usually takes place once every seven years. It brings together extended families as they come together in celebration of their loved ones. The festival celebrates life, portraying a rich and diverse cul-ture. It may look very strange but the Madagascans emit a great ambience and joy during the performance.

Frightful Flights

With quite a few accidents through-out its history this nail biter emanates an air of danger. That’s right, Toncon-tin International Airport (TgU) locat-ed in Tegucigalpa, Honduras is one of the most extreme airports in the world. so why does Toncontin cause so much fret? Perhaps its the nearby mountainous terrain or its short run-way of a mere 1,862 m in length? The latter aspect makes an impossible landing for the larger of jets whilst the smaller are left to contend with a frightening descent. A notable trage-dy at this airport was the Boeing 727-200 which crashed into a mountain in 1989. Indeed a hill was bulldozed in the early 1990s making the approach

to TgU less dangerous but it still remains an interesting ride. For in-stance an airplane landing at runway 01 at TgU must circle inside the ba-sin below mountaintops. As you can imagine the sight of looking up at the wing to catch glimpse of trees and mountains whilst being ridged on the other direction is beyond gripping. As the plane lines up for the runway it must cross the fence separating the airport property and the highway and make immediate contact. Along with the short runway comes a downhill slope allowing little braking time. I’m sure everybody abides by the seat-belt rule on this flight!

This airport may not thread through mountains or contend with extreme weather but it fits

into the scariest of airports and likened to a space shuttle take off. of course the air-port is no where near similar to a nAsA site but the feeling you get inside the air-craft taking off will have you feeling you are heading for space. Why? You ask. The airport is situated in near proximity to com-munities and therefore contains the strict-est of aircraft access and noise monitor-ing programs in the UsA, if not the world. Pilots must being their takeoffs close to full power, then inline quickly and steeply before reducing the engine power. It may seem like the engine has been turned off and so causes fretting passengers. How-ever spokespeople for the airport assure that safety is always maintained and the capabilities of the plane allow for such procedures. still it can’t be relaxing listen-ing to an engine turn silent as you drop; no matter how much pre warning you get.

John Wayne airport, California

Wellington international, neW Zealand

This pick is reputed to be a rough and turbulent landing spot due to the chan-neling effect of Cool strait creating significant crosswinds to an aircraft approach-ing from the south. In addition it has a runway of a 1,936 metres, hardly enough for larger aircrafts. Frequent Wellington landers claim that each descent causes hearts to pound all the way to baggage reclaim. In a way, the airports dramatic landing location is fitting; new Zealand is after all known for its adrenaline rushes so what better way to prepare yourself than a first time taste of the country’s enthu-siasm for dangerous ventures. Furthermore the airport has produced a new look for the airport with the title ‘Wild at Heart’ as its brand name. Your heart will surely be beating wildly after a Wellington touchdown!

If you thought looping through mountains was unnerving then this one will have you terrified. Passengers descend-ing and ascending to and from La Aurora International are in for an interesting ride. The plane must weave through mountains at a high altitude and confront a steep drop at the end of the runway. so far it is sounding rather treach-erous but how about doing all this whilst spinning over a

series of volcanoes, and not just dormant.....active! The Pacaya volcano caused La Aurora to close due to volcanic ash fall which pelted over the city and airport. It all sounds very risky but the views at night as you crusade over dark valleys and threatening volcanoes will have you erupting with excitement and fear!

The Penthouse Suite,

Hotel Martinez, CannesCannes is known for its swanky lifestyle, glitz, glamour and yacht filed harbors so its not surprising it contains one of the most ex-pensive hotel rooms in the world. The Penthouse suite in Hotel Martinez is also known as the Exceptional 7th Floor suite and being over 2,000 square feet it has the room to offer a multitude of opulent aspects. They include four bedrooms, marble baths, various luxury living and dining rooms, plasma screen TVs with satellite programming, and a terrace spa to relax whilst taking in the panoramic views of the Mediterranean. In addition it pos-sesses a 24 hour butler to serve your every need, and a design of indulgent Art Deco, with streamlined furniture, silk curtains and teak parquet floors. If you like to play your music extra loud you are free to do so as the rooms are soundproofed. Its ser-vices go beyond and although the price tag causes jaws to hit the ground it can be reduced with the option to separate the suite into four smaller suites.

The Presidential Suite,Hotel Cala di Volpe, Sardinia, Italy

Lap up the Mediterranean sea in a lodging of pure indulgence in this Presidential suite. Beware though, the multiple-level suite has a hefty multiple digit pricing to match. It contains two living rooms, three bathrooms, three bedrooms and much more. In actuality to get through all the amenities and perks of the suite one would have to stay for numerous months. The Cala di Volpe boasts various balconies for that perfect view, a rooftop terrace with private swimming pool and a fitness suite and steam room to give your body that detox boost. And thats not all, the hotel contains an exclusive cellar, two 42-inch flat-screen TVs and an extensive CD collection to entertain all needs. With an array of handcrafted sardinian furniture the suite exudes a strong essence of the island. so it seems like Hotel Cala di Volpe offers it all. However internet is not includ-ed in the $34,000 nightly charge! If you want to get online to check your damaged bank balance you must pay up some more....‘Preposterous’, I hear you cry.
