Believe it or not Middle East has its own Crater, yes it does. Xperience this prehistoric wonder in Saudi Arabia. The Wahba Crater is an enormous pre‑historic hole in the ground! A fancier attempt at describing the 2km wide and 260m deep crater would be a waste of superlatives – you have to see it and have your breath taken away – first, by the sheer size of it and secondly by the climb down and back up again. The crater is on the road to Riyadh. Approximately 5 hours from Jeddah. Although hot in the summer it is an incredible xperience. Go in winter, camp in night on the rim of the crater and feel the reality it.

Liwa is the destination that will blow you away with its massive expanse of beautiful desert and awesome dunes rising to heights of over 300 meters. Liwa is an oasis area in Abu Dhabi emirate of the UAE, lying south of Abu Dhabi on the border with Saudi Arabia. Like a sentinel guarding the southern approaches to the emirate it sits like a sentinel on the edge of the Empty Quarter, the famed Rub Al Khali ‑ the largest sand desert in the world. We started the journey with our team from AD 4 x 4 club, from Mussafah in Abu Dhabi under the guidance one of the most experience marshall called “Bulldozer”. We drove down 240 km to Hameem area, deflated the tyres at the petrol station and were all set for

an exhilarating ride over rolling dunes where we were on the ride of a lifetime. The size and scale of the sand dunes is quite spectacular, it definitely has to be seen to be believed. Our Liwa expedition was the most adventurous off‑road driving the UAE has to offer, and some of its incredible scenery. The pictures printed on this page, depicts only 5% of the fun, the reality is impossible to comprehend in words from being there live in flesh!

Tourists generally flock to the UAE with the mindset of being transformed to a world of glitz and glam. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the two most well known emirates and indeed modernity and splendour are found within both. However what about the other five? What do they boast? Another emirate, which is a haven for tourists but attracts for different reasons is the Emirates of Fujairah. It is an emirate rich in history and human heritage. It offers so many diverse features it is no wonder it allures the holidaymaker. From dazzling natural beauty to a long list of activities to entertain and a sparkling sun to complement a shimmering sea it is obvious as to why it is a favourable destination of many tourists.

The historical attractions of Fujairah will stir any history buff. Be brought back in time whilst experiencing its historical wonders. One can visit forts such as Fujairah fort, and Al Bathna Fort.

Fujairah Fort is located on a hilly centre point in the ancient village of Fujairah. The construction of this fort dates back to the period of 1500-1550. It is a fine construction, consisting of three main buildings each two storeys. Two of the buildings take on a cone shape, topped with pyramid like structures that were used in the past as shooting and observation posts. The third building takes on a cubical shape. At the castle you can overlook a vast expanse of agricultural land where you will view a landscape brimming with palm trees.

Al Bathna Fort is a very accessible for tourists as it is very close to the main road that links Fujairah to the rest of the UAE. This castle goes back to 1735 and here you can be taken away by the stunning majestic mountains and the fascinating palm orchards surrounding it.

Other historical attractions include: Al Hayl Castl, Al Budya Mosque, Fujairah Museum and Heritage Village Museum. Al Bidya Mosque is a must for visitors, here you can step into the oldest mosque in the UAE and enjoy a unique architectural mode.

The museum is interesting and educational for tourists; it demonstrates folkloric representation of daily life style of the people of Fujairah. The Heritage Village Museum also takes visitors back in

time to see a detailed past through a number of impressive display techniques, including a local folkloric dance spectacle known as ‘Al Ayyala’. A visit will also allow a viewing of the traditional method used in the olden days to pump underground water using the ox. You won’t be

leaving without a taste of traditional Arabic coffee, a symbol of deep-rooted hospitality.

Weekends at Fujairah won’t bore with the numerous excursions available.

Between the parks, waterfalls, mineral springs, souks and ancient sports visitors will have plenty to keep them entertained.

The Madhab Spring Park is vast spread of lush greenery located in the north end of the City of Fujairah.

Here you can find tranquillity within the surrounding mountains. The park is an attraction for a large number of tourists seeking natural treatment

from skin diseases. It features mineral springs where people from various parts of the globe come to test its creative properties, especially skin disease and arthritis.

Madhab and Ain Al Ghmour Sulphoic Springs are the two most important in Fujairah. The springs are reported to have highly satisfactory curative properties for those who suffer from arthritis, skin disease and shrinking of the muscles.

Al Wurrayah Spring Waterfalls is another natural beauty within Fujairah and it has visitors’ mouth’s gaping at its picturesque view in the middle of mountains and wadis. The falls are formed from the fresh waters of Al Wurrayah Spring. You can sit back, relax and soak up the splendid vision whilst listening to the gushing waters.

With all that relaxation at parks, springs and waterfalls you may want to exert yourself, and what better way to do it than with some mountaineering. The magnificent mountains of the Emirates of Fujairah are a favourite for hikers. The diverse and plentiful ravines covering on the wadis add charisma to the fantastic land.

If it’s shopping you care for, there is the Souk Al Juma which is located 30

kilometres from the City of Fujairah. This is a traditionally styled souk where you can pick up traditional handicrafts and local products. It is an energetic shopping experience and gives you a further insight to the culture of the region.

Natural beauty isn’t just contained on Fujairah’s land; the waters of the emirate highlight colourful coral reefs and a richly diverse marine life. And these can be experienced through the diving opportunities available. The unspoiled azure waters of Fujairah coast offer professional divers, beginners and trainees a unique chance to dive in the Indian Ocean. Be allured into the depths of the underwater wonderland with magnificent sights, exquisite deep-sea marine life and incredible discoveries.

Pamukkale is a natural wonder which is also known as the “Cotton Castle”. This exotic site is located in the Denizli Province which is in the south western region of Turkey. This site is famous all around the world for its terraces of carbonate minerals which are formed due to the flowing water. At this place you can also find travertines and hot springs. This world famous site appears like a Cotton Castle that is why various people from all around the world come to visit this place.

The ancient city of Hierapolis was located here many centuries ago and it is now completely in ruins. The water that comes through an underground source in this area is said to be a cure for various diseases. Many thermal hotels are also located very near to Pamukkale.

Shandur Top at 12,200 feet is the Roof of the World. This major mountain located in Khyber Pakhtunkwa connects Chitral to the Gilgit in Pakistan. It is on this Shandur Top – the highest polo ground in the world that a traditional Polo match is played annually between the two teams of Chitral and Gilgit amidst a festival which includes folk music, dancing and a camping village.

Freestyle mountain polo is arguably polo in its purest form. This version of the game played at Shandur has attained legendary status attracting international and domestic adventure tourists alike. There are no umpires and there are no holds barred. The rules are: There are no rules!

In order to decide the final teams to play at the Shandur Polo Festival preliminary matches are played both in Chitral and Gilgit in which the best horses and players are chosen for the final games by the local juries. What are Nazca Lines? Why are they so mystifying? The high deserts of Peru hold the most mysterious monuments of the world – the massive scale geoglyphs known as Nazca Lines. These geometric patterns to drawings of different animal and stylized human

like forms can only be discerned from high in the air. Generations are mystified and baffled that long before the invention of human flight how could these amazing ‘patterns’ be completed? Are these the works of an Alien existence or have these been etched by

giants? Who built them and for what purpose? Modern archeology may just have the answers sooner of later. But until then when in Peru xperience the patterns.

Peru is a country well known for its Inca culture. Thus, the most internationally recognized cultural tourist

attraction in Peru is the ruins of Machu Picchu. And why wouldn’t it be, the new Seven Wonder of the World is certainly magical. You are taken to another time and it is a must for anyone visiting Peru. Yet, there is a great deal more to Peru than this highlight. In fact Peru tourism can be divided into several categories such as archaeological monuments, gastronomic tourism, adventure tourism, ecotourism in the Peruvian Amazon, cultural tourism in colonial cities and also beach tourism. Other than the Inca sites there are many more attractions, including stunning mountains and volcanoes, impressive Spanish colonial architecture, and of course luxuriant Amazon rainforests. Lets investigate what this incredible country has to offer.

1. Exploring the Amazon Rainforest is a major ‘to do’ in Peru. The nation has the second largest amount of Amazon Rainforest after Brazil. It covers 60% of

the country, creating a unique and diverse ecosystem when combined with the mighty Andean Mountain range and Pacific Ocean. It is a haven for nature lovers as it is one of the most biologically diverse areas on Earth. Furthermore Peru has the largest number of bird species in the world and third largest number of mammals.

2. Taking a tour of the Floating Islands of Lake Titicaca is a must. Here you will step on an island made entirely of reeds! Also it is home to the Uros tribe, one that pre-dates the Incan civilization, so the trip will allow you to gain an interesting perspective into the lives of Peru’s aboriginal people.

3. The Colca Canyon. The adventurous soles are in their element in Peru. Its geographically diversity opens up an abundance of doors leading to exciting activity. You can surf, sandboard, dune

bash, raft, rally, trek, ski, mountain climb and so on, enough to tire any adrenaline junkie. Taking a hike through the Colca Canyon is worth an experience, even if you aren’t the most physically motivated, witnessing the beauty and spectacular scenery of the canyon should not be missed. In fact, the Colca canyon is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States!

4. Next up is the Nazca Lines, a series of ancient geoglyphs that range from wildlife to geometric designs. Although there are several theories about how and why these geoglyphs were created. It still remains a mystery. They are Peru’s most peculiar attractions and to take full advantage of viewing their extraordinary designs you should do so by air. Not only will you gain full vantage but you will also experience a rather adventurous plane ride.

5. The Sacred Valley of the Incas. Machu Picchu is the obvious top and winning spot when it comes to Incan archaeology but Peru contains another sparkling archaeological treasure. The Sacred Valley of the Incas is an essential visit for history fans and cultural connoisseurs. The region is abundant in ruins and archaeological sites and well known for its remarkable landscapes and lush agriculture. Today it remains as lush, still supplying the

city of Cusco with much of its produce such as maize, fruit and vegetables. The Sacred Valley can be discovered through tours organized from Cusco, the ancient capital of the Incan Empire.

6. Huachina. As I mentioned earlier, Peru boasts a wide range of thrills for the adventurous. The Peruvian desert oasis has become an increasingly popular tourist attraction for adventurers drawn to sandboarding and the high-speed dune buggy ride.

7. Mancora. If sand isn’t your ideal boarding base then head to Mancora. This beach town is located on the Pacific coast of Peru and renowned for its unspoiled beaches, great surf and relaxed atmosphere.

8. Lima, Peru’s largest metropolitan city doesn’t ever seem to be a tempting taste for tourists and is generally just overlooked as the ‘layover’ en route to Cusco. However its bad reputation for safety has camouflaged all its interesting richness in history and culture. It has lots of things to see and do, such as great museums, historic cathedrals, eerie catacombs, tasty traditional Peruvian cuisine and not to mention its electric nightlife and shopping prospects. Take your camera to the bluffs at the Miraflores to capture the spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.

9. The Cordillera Blanca. 420km north of Lima is Huaraz. This is the gateway to the Cordillera Blanca, the highest range of the Peruvian Andes

and well known for its magnificent snowcapped peaks and glaciers. The Huascarán, the highest mountain in Peru is included in the Cordillera Blanca. It reaches 6,768 metres

and stands as the third highest in the Western Hemisphere. If you are looking for a fantastic trek, you have it here; trekking the Cordellera Blanca in Huaraz is arguably the best place in South America for trekking and mountain climbing expeditions.

10. The Ballestas Islands is a wonderful nature reserve, accessed from the beach town of Paracas by tour boat. Wildlife lovers will relish here, it is a flavour of the Galapagos Islands but more affordable. The islands are abundant in animals, including sea lions, sea turtles, octopus, starfish, seals, and Humboldt penguins. The Peruvian marine fault, a merging point for two currents, the El Nino warm water and the Humboldt cold waters, was formed millions of years ago. This unique climatic condition allows for plankton, fish and shellfish to thrive. Visitors may also get lucky and spot aquatic mammals such as whales and dolphins. Species they definitely won’t miss are the birds, the islands are buzzing with alcatrazs, zarcillos, penguins, flamingos, and parihuanas.

So there you have it, a list of some other attractions other than the well-known Machu Picchu. Peru really does offer a diverse package and sends you home with fantastic stories to share.

With the heat scaling up and the scorching summer heading to be at its peak it’s high time to get away on a holiday and enjoy. A relaxing holiday with some good sight-seeing and gourmets is no more in fashion and rather seems to be another conventional monotonous style of holidaying. What is new is an adventurous holiday, doing something which stays as an experience of lifetime, a memory to cherish forever and a feeling that makes you nostalgic every time you think about it. out of many, Beyond xperience chose to talk about five of such mesmerizing experiences you should indulge yourself into this summer.

To begin with, the first in the closest vicinity is India’s Gangotri, though there are a lot of unconventional things that can be done in India but Gangotri is one of the most popular adventure hotspots. Up there in Uttarkashi district of the northern state of Uttrakhand,

amongst the glaciers of Garhwal Himalayas is one of the most popular glacier named Gangotri. India’s largest river, Ganga initiates from here and in Hindu mythology it is believed that Shiva seek his eternal peace at this peak. The Glacier is an apt place for adventure lovers. Travellers can do Ice skating, mountain trekking, white water rafting and bungee jumping all of them together at Gangotri. Falling down the river, rafting the steep mountains in the green rocks scares and amuses you at the same time (though there are enough trained coaches and tour staff to protect you from any accidents). Mountain trekking amidst the old holy saints away from the materialistic world seeking spiritual enlightenment

is an experience that will bring you a smile every time you talk about it.

The adventure lovers must have tried the rope way in Dubai or the rope trams in Europe, but have you ever imagined cutting through forests at a height with speed? Try going to St. Lucia, an island country in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with Atlantic Ocean and experience Ziplining. It is an adventure activity where one is tied

to mechanically operated ropes and travels from one place, cutting through the distance to another (rainforest in case of St. Lucia). St. Lucia has the thickest tropical rainforests in the Caribbean and no words can describe the escapade one enjoys. Being tied

on a rope cutting through the forests gives you the experience of your life time and will for sure make you realize that why did Tarzan never wanted to be civilized. Away from the hustle bustle of roads and traffic you hear; the sound of rubbing leaves and winds cutting across the trees, roaring animals, chirping birds and your heart beating at its peak yet capturing the joy of being wild.

Talking about adventure travelling won’t be complete unless we have spoken of exploring the wildlife of Africa. Though, every country on the continent has immense wildlife and distinctive features but ‘Beyond Xperience’, chose to discover Serengeti, a national park in Tanzania. Serengeti

This activity is popular worldwide, though is more widespread in New Zealand. New Zealand fur seals have a colony on Stephens Island to the north of D’Urville Island. After the breeding season the young pups are forced to reside outside this main colony. They take up residence in ‘haul out’ areas free from the larger seals. These are the areas where people enjoy their swims the most. The advantage being, that the young seal pups are more playful than adult seals and the water is calmer. One can also see the reef below and enjoy a variety of fish species and marine life and have an adventurous holiday with the new mates.

South Korea hosts a number of festivals but one which draws in the crowds, especially international numbers is the Boryeong Mud Festival. Become immersed in both the mud and the festival’s electric atmosphere with various activities, all involving plenty of muddy fun. The festival is held annually every summer. Enjoy a wrestle in the mud ring, be locked up in mud jail, slide down a mega mudslide, compete in a mud skiing competition or go for

a swim in the mud mega tub. And if you become bored of all the shades of browns you can brighten yourself up with the coloured mud, which is produced for body painting. Or if you become too dried up with the mud, the festival is ideally located on Daecheon beach so you can go wash it off and do it all again later. A large stage is erected on the beach, which is used for live music, competitions and various other visual attractions.

But being covered in so much dirt can hardly be good for you. Can it? Indeed it can as all the mud at Boryeong Mud Festival has been trucked to the Daecheon beach area from the Boryeong mud flats. This is not regular mud and is considered rich in minerals and used to manufacture cosmetics. So those who are looking for a good time and to gain a glowing complexion this is the ideal festival to xperience.

La Tomatina in Bunyol is one of the greatest Spanish Festivals and probably the world’s biggest food fight. It takes place on the fourth Wednesday in August and draws in around 30,000 people eager to throw around 240,000 pounds of tomatoes at each other. Prepare to be flushed a vibrant red. The festival commences at 10am in an interesting manner with the “palo jabón” which is comparable to the greasy pole. The aim is to climb a greased pole with ham on the top. Whilst this is happening, the onlookers work into a frenzy of singing and dancing whilst being showered in water

from hoses. The atmosphere intensifies and once someone manages to drop the ham off the pole, a loud shot will signal the start of the tomato fight and the chaos can commence.

Truckloads of tomatoes are thrown into the Plaza del Pueblo. These fruits come from Extremadura and are less expensive as they are of inferior taste. So you need not feel bad for wasting a succulent tomato by firing it straight for your rival’s head. Also, no need to fear injury as the festival has a policy in which the tomatoes must be crushed before throwing.

The second shot is fired exactly one hour later, announcing the end. The whole town square is coloured red and the rivers flow with tomato juice. It is then time for the cleansing process. Fire trucks hose down the streets and the partakers wash the tomato paste from their bodies with the locally provided hoses. The cleaning leaves the town sparkling due to the acidity of the tomato disinfecting and thoroughly cleaning the surfaces. Enjoy a BIG food fight? Then why not trip to Bunyol and xperience the biggest.

Cheese lovers of the globe take a trip to Cooper’s Hill, Gloucester in England to xperience an age old tradition of cheese rolling. It was traditionally set up by and for the people who live in the local village of Brockworth, but now people from all over the world take part. In fact the festival has become so popular it became a victim of its own success drawing in crowds of about 15,000 in 2009 to a venue equipped to cope with only 5,000. Hence the 2010 event was cancelled

due to health and safety worries. However the tradition is set for revival this June. So what does this festival entail? The answer is not as simple as the title suggests and there area lot more bodies rolling than cheese. From the top of the hill a round of Double Gloucester cheese is rolled, and competitors race after it in a fight to win the dairy prize.

It certainly isn’t for the faint hearted and has been labelled as

one of the world’s top ten extreme sports! If it doesn’t sound extreme it may be worth xperiencing the event. Throwing yourself down an incredibly steep hill in a chase after a hefty amount of rolling cheese, reaching speeds of 70mph puts it in the extreme sports category. Its all about lunacy and danger and if that is what interests you then the Cheese Rolling festival will impress; just make sure you have good health insurance!

Another bizarre activity, which draws in crowds from all over the world, is the Wife Carrying Championships. The title itself is intriguing, so how do you become a champion wife carrier? Take a trip to Sonkajärvi in Finland where the sport was first introduced and the major wife-carrying competitions are held. You must be male to compete and race whilst carrying a female teammate. The objective is for the male to carry the female through a special obstacle track in the fastest time. There are several types of carry that may be practiced: piggyback, fireman’s carry (over the shoulder), or Estonian style (the wife hangs upside down with her legs around her husbands shoulders, holding onto his waist).

And if you are eager to partake in the festivities but don’t reside in Finland, wife carrying is also practiced in the United States of America, Hong Kong, and other parts of the world. It has even made it into the Guinness Book of Records.

The length of the track is 253.5 meters and has two dry obstacles and a water obstacle about one meter deep. The wife being carried may be your own, the neighbour’s, or a friend; however she must be over 17years of age. She also must weigh no less than 49 kilograms. If she does weigh less, she will be burdened with a rucksack containing additional weight in order to bring it up to 49 kilo. These are some of the rules but the most important rules are to have fun and the winner is the person who completes the course in the shortest time. So if you fancy yourself as a potential wife carrying champion or just want to spectate to xperience the fun, get involved!

royal jordanian and Unicef sign Partnership Agreement

Royal Jordanian today signed a partnership agreement with Unicef to help improve the situation of children and adolescents in Jordan and support UNICEF’s programs and initiatives in Jordan which focus on the development, care and empowerment of children and adolescents.

The agreement was signed by RJ President/ Chief Executive Officer Hussein Dabbas and Unicef’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa Shahida Azfar.

Dabbas commended this partnership with the leading international children’s organization, and praised UNICEF’s work in Jordan and its continued support for the protection of women and children.

Azfar thanked Royal Jordanian and stressed that only through partnerships with the private and public sectors gains for children can be achieved. “There is no doubt that this partnership will yield positive results to Unicef’s work, in

the region as well as in Jordan, to promote the health, education and protection of children,” she said.

Royal Jordanian will encourage members of its frequent flyer program (Royal Plus) to donate points from their personal accounts to Unicef. These points will be valid for a two-year period.

Empire Aviation Group (EAG), the Dubai-based private aviation specialist, has announced plans to expand into India with a new Mumbai branch office opening by mid 2011. The company aims to replicate its success in the Middle East, where EAG manages one of the region’s largest managed fleets of business jets and which continues to grow with the addition of Dassault Falcon 7X jets.

The senior management team from EAG will attend EBACE 2011 as the company looks to develop its regional position and accelerate its expansion within and beyond the Middle East.

EAG’s new branch in Mumbai - the company’s first operation outside Dubai - will eventually offer the full range of Empire Aviation Group services in the subcontinent, and will have an initial focus on aircraft sales and management. The latest indicator of the steady upturn in Abu Dhabi’s cruise industry potential, the upmarket Ocean Princess, which is currently on a round-the-world voyage, is the first of two Princess Cruises’ arrivals scheduled to dock in Abu Dhabi in the coming weeks.

“This arrival is the result of three years of negotiations with senior Princess Cruises management, though the move to include Abu Dhabi on the company’s round-the-world itineraries gained compelling momentum in the last 12 months as the emirate’s international stop-over reputation spread,” said George Varghese, General Manager - Commercial, Rais Hassan Saadi Group, a port agent at the forefront of regional cruise industry growth.

With Varghese insisting the smaller, limited capacity luxury liner is “testing the waters” for Princess Cruises, he revealed the larger, 2,272-capacity Dawn Princess will arrive in Abu Dhabi on June 16 as part of its own globe-trotting voyage.

“The arrivals of Ocean Princess and Dawn Princess illustrate increasing international operator demand for Abu Dhabi. The emirate’s regular, winter season itineraries yield the majority of cruise traffic, but year-round stop-overs for round-the-world vessels could see arrivals extended to the traditional, out-of-season summer months,” added Varghese.

Princess Cruises is wholly-owned by Carnival Cruises, the world’s largest cruise line operator. Carnival, which operates more than 100 vessels under various brands - including Abu Dhabi stop-over regulars, AIDA Cruises and Costa Cruises - currently contributes 75 per cent of all Abu Dhabi’s cruise arrivals.

Master Stefano Ravera, Captain, Ocean Princes said he was “honoured” to be at the helm of the vessel as she made her historic maiden call in Abu Dhabi.

“As captain I can say I and the crew felt at home here as soon as we saw the fabulous city skyline. The passengers have had a fantastic experience in Abu Dhabi with them commenting that they felt safe and that everything is so clean,” he said.
