Remember if you volunteered to work the show to check with Sarah.

Guild Executive Board: Minutes and treasurer’s report were available for review. Flo clarified why there were negative amounts in the treasurer’s report – it is actually positive. She will email this info to all members in the future.

Showcase Boutique: Carol Patton has the sign-up sheet for participants. She went over the allowable items and rules. Keep in mind the 7% tax and 10% goes to the guild when figuring your pricing.

Sarah’s Guild Report: Sarah said there are 309 entries for the 2017 Showcase. She went over the Showcase volunteer jobs. Wristbands for volunteer entry will be given out next month. Don’t loose this as it is necessary to get into the Showcase at no charge. Our chapter has 2 items for the silent auction, and additional are welcome. The basket raffle donation is to have a $100 value and we have decided on a Modern Quilt theme. Nancy Buettner made a motion that we take up to $100 from our treasury to go for items for the basket. Debbie Bookman 2nd and motion carried. Sarah reminded us that the December guild meeting is December 6 at 7 p.m. Laurel Manor. Susan Perron is the speaker. Each chapter is asked to bring 4 dozen cookies – to be brought Dec 5 to Lake Miona 9:30 to 10 a.m. or Bradenton 11 to 11:30. Tentative date for the Quilters’ Closet & Notions sale is March 18, 2017. They are still deciding if the sale should be for residents only or open to the public. Alex Anderson will be doing 4 sessions on March 28, 2017. Cost for guild members is $10 (includes all 4 sessions). Members will get a voucher which must be taken to a box office by January 1, 2017 to get your ticket. After that date sales will be open to the public at a higher fee. The new guild website is up and running. To get on, use your email address, password is your last name with no caps. All upcoming classes are listed here. There will be a free-form quilting class on January 4 with cost of $35. Quilting Guild of The Villages now has 1096 members. A volunteer is needed to take over the public relations position. Esther Meinhart is retiring. Volunteers are also needed for the Colonial Days to be held at Brownwood on Jan 20, 2017. The guild will have an area where hand quilting will be demonstrated. Judy S. did this last year and had a good time. If you are interested contact her. Guild still has tote bags for $15 and cookbooks will be sold at the Showcase. Tips and Notes:

Template and Ruler Hanger: The best way I have found to keep my templates and rulers within reach is a belt hanger. You can usually find them in department stores or bed and bath stores.

Members’ Highlights:

Lynn Keole

My name is Lynn Koele and I live in the Village of Collier in The Villages and have been a member of the Big Cypress Quilters for three years. I am originally from Wisconsin, but came to The Villages from Fort Mill, SC, where my husband, Ken, and I lived for nine years. We have been married for 46 years and have three children and six grandchildren, all who live in Wisconsin. I have always enjoyed sewing, but became interested in quilting about 30 years ago. I joined a Quilting Guild in Jefferson County, WI, called the Calico Capers, and it was there that I was introduced to new quilting techniques and patterns, and my quilting interest and knowledge expanded. I have always been known for my baby quilts as over the years I have made quilts and crib sets for all of my nieces and nephews and now make them for their children and my grandchildren. I particularly enjoy choosing and selecting the fabrics and colors that go into my quilts. Thank you to my fellow Big Cypress Quilters for expanding my quilting knowledge by constantly introducing me to, and sometimes gently pushing me to learn, new quilting techniques, patterns, and tools.

Binding a Quilt Using The Classic Rollover

By Becky Jorgensen

If anyone is stuck on bindings out there- this is for you! This is really a pretty quick way of doing it and great for beginners.

1) Before quilting you need to make sure that your back is LARGER than your front!! This is the only way that this type of binding will work. You should always have extra on the sides when quilting anyways, but just in case check.

2) After quilting you need to trim those edges. The TOP of the quilt and the batting needs to be trimmed to the edge of the top of the quilt. Scissors are the best here. You need to especially make sure that the back does not sneak into that scissor line and get snipped. (I really hate it when that happens.) You want to be cutting ONLY the TOP and the BATTING here. NOT THE BACK!!!

3) Trim the back. Now you can use a super long ruler with your rotary cutter and trim the back. Take your ruler and measure 3/4 inch past the top and be consistent on this! It helps the front look nice. Do this on all four edges.

4) Now we make the binding. Take that 3/4 inch extra back and fold it. Line the raw edge right up to the edge of the top and batting edge.

Big Cypress Whispers

Binding a Quilt Using The Classic Rollover

By Becky Jorgensen

5) Fold once more. It will fold onto the top of the quilt and be 1/4 inch past the edge.

6) Pin, hold or clip into place. Now, here is where I cheat. I have been doing the binding for too many years to mention, so I can just whip it over to the machine and get that thing done in no time. No pinning or clipping for me. I know how to keep it in place and make it behave. You may notice this is very similar to rolling the edge over on a blanket and making it a nice edge.

7) Sew that edge down. Take it to the sewing machine and sew right along that edge. You don't want to be so close you are constantly jumping off and missing it, but not so far in it looks like a rookie was doing it. Hey, rookies become pros, so don't give up.

As an alternative, you could hand sew that down if you would like. After you fold, fold and pin or clip in place; sit and stitch it down.

A little note on corners: Corners can be tricky. This is the way I do them and I get a nice mitered corner on the top.

Stop sewing at least 1 inch before the end of the side you are stitching down. This will give you enough room to fold over the next side and make that corner look nice.

Fold that next side CORNER in a triangle.

Fold the edge till it meets the edge of the top and batting edge. Just like above. Then fold it again so it overlaps the top 1/4 inch.

Continue sewing along that edge to finish the binding and then —keeping your needle in the down position AND on top of the next side that you just folded nicely— turn the corner to the next side.

Finish sewing and folding and mitering the binding until you have done all 4 sides. Isn't that quick and wonderful?
