The stripe is the ultimate fi x. Need to make a room to look taller? Paint or paper vertical stripes on the walls. Need to make a room look wider? Try horizontal stripes. Need to pull together a disparate color scheme? Find a striped rug that incorporates each color.

“Stripes are a problem-solver,” says Annie Selke, a Massachusetts-based designer and owner of textiles companies Pine Cone Hill, Fresh American and Dash & Albert Rug Co. (the last of which is popular for its approxi-mately 150 striped rug patterns). They can make a bold statement when wide or act as a textured neutral when thin. They can read as

nautical when blue-and-white or classy when used tone on tone. It’s no wonder that while other patterns come and go in popularity, stripes are here to stay.

“You might change other things in a room, but you can use the striped item again,” Selke says. “Stripes never go out of style.”

We talked to Selke and two other designers for tips and tricks when using the versatile pattern.

Selke loves the way that British designer ■

It’s a bad squash season

Well, I must admit, even the expert gets baffl ed sometimes.

I’ve been watching the cucurbits (squash and cucum-ber plants) in the vegetable garden at the offi ce and noticed for two weeks now all the

squash blooms are male. I jokingly said to one of the Master Gardeners, “I wonder if some-one sprinkled these plants with male dust?”

But, this is no joke. Without

those female fl owers, there is nothing for us to eat from those plants. They are that important.

Cucurbits usually send out a batch of male fl owers fi rst, followed by female fl owers, then a combination of male and female fl owers. At least that was the way I’ve seen it work in all my years of growing a vegetable garden. The typical problem encountered by visitors to the Master Gardener Plant Clinic is usually related to seeing a tiny squash or cucumbers on the plant that just wither and die. The immature (tiny) fruit is actually the ovary of the female fl ower. In order for the fruit to develop, pollination needs to take place. The pollen needs to transfer from the male fl ower,

Q: I bought this painting from an estate sale. It says “Cross River

Lake Katonah” on the back and the date looks like “10/22/32.” The frame is 17 inches by 13 inches. In the front bottom-right it has “M E Albers.”

On the Internet, I found that the initials are for Margaretha E. Albers and the Cross River Lake Katonah is in New York. Does this painting have any value? I would be grateful for any information.

A: Margaretha E. Albers was born in Katonah, New York, in

1881 and lived until 1979. She painted landscape and marine pictures. I think your painting would sell in the $100 to $200 range.

Q: I have a Shirley Temple doll that is signed on the back “Shirley

Temple 16.” It has a badge with “World’s Darling Genuine Shirley Temple Doll” on the front. On the back of the badge it says “Ideal Novelty Toy Col., Reg. U.S. Pat. Off” and her signature. On the rim of the badge it says “Made in U.S.A.” The doll needs some repair. Whatever you can tell me about its worth will be appreciated.

in large quantities. Your doll was likely produced in the 1930s to 1940s. Current collector interest

has dropped off severely since the 1980s to ’90s. Current potential dollar value in as-is condition is up to $100.

bakers by Savory. The small one is 14½

by 9 inches, and the large one is 18 by 12 inches. They are both in excellent condition. They are family pieces, but are a bit too large to use in modern-day ovens. Is there a value for this kind of bake ware?

Q: I came across a novel written by John R. Musick who, according

to Wikipedia, was a very prolifi c writer born in 1849 and died in 1901. The name of the book I have is “Pocahontas.” It is one of the 14 books he wrote while doing the “Columbian Historical Novel” series. I would be interested in knowing if there is any monetary value in this book and, if there is, how l would go about pursuing this.

Guess what? Hand pollination isn’t even an option for us to consider since there are no new female fl owers.

I decided to have a chat with Master Gardener Ray McNeal, who’s been gardening in Marion County for more than 80 years. Ray still volunteers in the Plant Clinic every Monday and most Fridays. Ray said to me, “I had someone call with that same question last week, and I asked if it was zucchini.”

The caller said it was zucchini, then Ray went on to tell me that he’s experienced that problem before, but only in zuc-chini.

In researching the mystery of the “male-blooming zucchinis” a little further, I found that the sex of the fl ower is infl uenced by tempera-ture, day length, maturity of the plant and hormones. The UF/IFAS publication “Home Vegetable Garden Techniques: Hand Pollination of Squash and Corn in Small Gardens” provides some excellent images of the male and female fl owers and how to hand-pollinate. Now to problem No. 2: melonworms. We try to limit the use of pesticides in the vegetable gardens, so when we started to see melonworms on the squash plants, I explained to the Empower Ocala Garden participants how to have fun killing the bad bugs that dare to visit their plants. We did as much of that as we could, followed by an application of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). I felt good about it, and left work for a long weekend. When I returned to work Monday, some of the zucchini plants were all stalks, completely devoured by melonworms. Melonworm larvae are light green with two white stripes along the length of the body. The stripes fade as they get ready to pupate. The larvae can get up to 16 mm in length. For more information on melonworms, visit edis.ifas.ufl .edu/pdffi les/IN/IN32000.pdf. For those of you who are new to gardening, if you’re having a bad squash season like I am, don’t be discouraged. Get out your notebook and make notes of the problems you encountered in your fall garden, what worked, and what did not work. The world looks fabu-lous wrapped in the colors of fall. And at the base of this

beautiful bouquet of radi-ant color is brown. Earthy, warm, soothing and satis-fying, the color brown en-courages us to slow down and snuggle in. And eat hot, buttery popcorn. Or, is that just me? I digress. Here are my favorite ways to work this dramatic but undemanding neutral into your home decor.1. PAIR BROWN WITH LIGHTER, BRIGHTER COLORS

A few years ago, brown was the bomb. So much so that we saw people going overboard with this dramatic neutral. Folks were washing their homes from ceiling to fl oor in brown, with brown walls, brown furniture, brown artwork and more.

It didn’t take much to make the Brown Houses, as we began to call them, more visually appealing. The trick? Pair brown with lighter, brighter colors. We created a palette that is perfect for a living room, dining room or bedding ensemble using fabrics featuring browns, creams and pops of warm reds. Switch the red for navy and you have the same stately look.

Brown also looks great mixed with brighter, bolder accent colors.

In a mix of fabrics, we added in a liberal amount of cream, then threaded in a bit of sage and celadon.

I also love turquoise, apple green, fuchsia, orange and yellow with brown.2. BRING BROWN ALIVE THROUGH PATTERN

The secret to keeping a focused palette interesting and alive is to swirl the

colors together with lots of different patterns. The mix of patterns in the furnish-ings is the key to success.

3. USE BROWN TO SPOTLIGHT LIGHTER ACCENTS AND ARTWORK

Great artwork can get lost on a light wall if you are not careful. But when you hang lighter pieces against a moody, dark canvass of brown, holy smokes! It pops! The walls in a gallery at Nell Hill’s are painted Molasses, one of my Mary Carol Artisan Paint colors. This is one of our most popular paint colors, and for good reason.

My friend Cynthia painted her dining room walls Molasses and the wood trim Garrity Cream. The light cream trim keeps the dark walls from feeling heavy or dull. And, wow, does it look great with her casual dining room furnishings. The brown is content to recede into the background and let the individual elements

in the room shine.4. ADD BROWN TO MAKE SPACES SOOTHING

Warm and wonderful, brown pillows on a comfy cream sofa look ready for your Sunday nap.

My Top 10 list of decorat-ing faves? A pair of brown leather wingback chairs fl anking a fi replace. The light stone fi replace surrounds, and blue walls and plump plaid pillows keep the chairs from feeling too dark. 5. PAIR BROWN WITH EARTHY ACCENTS

The color of bark and soil and fall leaves, brown is a natural when paired with earthy accents. My friend Jean made her covered porch an ode to nature’s rugged side by furnishing her space in brown wicker chairs and irresistible textiles in a mix of browns.

A rustic wood table is a perfect celebration of brown in all its many shades and fi nishes.

Stripes can even help with a blank, ■

empty room. Find a striped pattern that you like, Selke suggests, and pull out colors for paint and accent colors in the room. The Amalfi Striped Door Mat can be used in that way to inspire a front-porch color scheme ($54, www.olivean-dcocoa.com).

In a room full of the expected metal, ■

glass, fabric and wood fi nishes, Fried-man likes how the black-and-white wood-and-bone Rounded Inlay Coffee Table would add both “interest and texture” ($1,298, www.anthropologie.com). “Stripes can be a great way to add pattern for people who are afraid to add pattern.”

Stripes of different thickness can ■

“I love stripes on dishes, coffee cups, ■

glasses,” Tydings says. Kate Spade’s Tall Glasses feature a windowpane pattern ($30 for set of four, www.saturday.com). As Tydings reminds us, “Don’t think of stripes only as unidirec-tional.”

Is there anything more classicly ■

preppy than navy and white stripes? Tydings recommends Kate Spade’s Charlotte Street dinnerware pattern ($80 for a four-piece place setting, www.katespade.com). The designer also likes rugs in navy and white stripes, and has one in her own house. “It’s nautical and crisp,” she says.

Pendleton’s Glacier Park Flannel ■

Sheet Set “plays well with others,” Tydings says, because even though the stripes are bold, they are placed on a neutral background. The set would fi t with either a modern or traditional bedroom and could easily be mixed with other patterns ($119-$179, www.pendleton-usa.com).

of personality, Tydings likes School-house Electric & Supply Co.’s Multi HP-4408-08-4 shade ($69, www.schoolhouseelectric.com). Thick stripes on shades run the risk of obscuring the light inside, but on this shade, the stripes are fi ne enough to allow the light to shine through.

“What a fun way to use stripes,” says ■

Friedman about the Lafayette Lamp in a navy stripe ($389 including choice of shade, www.schoolhouseelectric.com). As with most stripes, how it reads depends on its environment; this lamp could be classic, traditional, nautical or preppy. Just make sure to limit stripes to an accessory or chair or two, Fried-man says.

Q: Ed, I’m planning to replace my old kitchen faucet, and since the

new faucet should be there for years to come, I want to keep up with current trends. With that said, I want to buy one of those new electronic high-tech faucets with automatic sensors so I can turn it on and off easily while I wash dishes, but still keep my set temperature. Can you please give me some basic tips on what to look for in my new state-of-the art kitchen faucet?

A: Like most plumbing fi xtures out there in today’s modern market,

it all comes down to personal preferences. Aside from style and fi nish, you can keep two basic choices in mind when looking for your high-tech kitchen faucet:

1. Faucet operation. While most will turn on normally with a standard-type handle, you can the stop and start the fl ow of water

through the spout with a built-in electronic sensor. Depending on the faucet, it can be a touchless sensor or a tap sensor. Decide what type may work best for your needs.

2. Power choice. If you’re dealing with

an electronic faucet, you may fi nd models that use battery power or the ones I’ve seen plug into a code-ap-proved electrical outlet under the sink. The big tip here is to check to see if a manual override of the faucet is available in the event of a power or battery loss.

Bottom line: When it comes to choosing a modern-day electronic kitchen faucet, you can still add your own personal touch to your kitchen.
