Misty RoweCo-founder of TheragNos in Golden, CO There’s no such thing as a typical day for Misty. Working for a start-up company involves balancing the business side with the researchside.Sometimesshe’ll be writing proposals or talking with people about investing in TheragNos. Other times she’ll be in the lab working on an extension of her Ph.D. research at the ColoradoSchoolof Mines, which led to the formation of her company. Her research aims to eliminate harmful side effects associated with MRIs, thereby making the procedure safer. Misty says that the best part of her job is not having to do the same thing day after day. Shecontinuallylearnsnewthings, which is why she got intoresearchinthefirstplace. Her favorite high school classes were AP Biology and Chemistry – both of which got her interested in science.

Sarah MutkaAssociate Director of Cell Biology for N30 Pharmaceuticals in Boulder, COSarah’scompanyisworkingto develop drugs to treat lung and cardiovascular diseases. Her days consist of meeting with team members, reading scientificpapers, designingexperiments, analyzing data and working in the lab. Lab work typically involves treating cells with drugs or compounds and analyzing the effects of the drugs. It’s not that simple, though; cell-based experiments take several days to set-up, perform and analyze before you know the results. Sarahsaysit’sveryrewarding to be a part of something that could someday help save lives; it’s even better that she gets to use high-tech equipment and have fun conducting experiments in the process!
