When fully operational, Baxalta’s (formerly Baxter International) new facility in Covington will bring additional capacity for testing, purification, and fill and finish for its biologic products. It will also create nearly 1,500 jobs. Products to be manufactured at the facility include immunoglobulin therapy for patients with immune deficiencies and albumin products primarily used as plasma-volume replacement therapy in critical care, trauma and burn patients.

Kaiser Permanente Announces New IT Center

April 2015: Kaiser Permanente announced plans for a new midtown Atlanta information technology center that will employ 900 IT professionals. The IT shared services facility will provide services related to cybersecurity, mobile technologies, patient medical records, consumer technologies, electronic medical record systems and other back office functions.

The Georgia Research Alliance, Georgia Tech and The Marcus Foundation, which funds medical

research and community food resources, recently announced a total investment of $23 million to

build a new research center that will develop new processes and techniques for manufacturing

living cells used in cell-based therapies.

The new center, called the Marcus Center for Therapeutic Cell Characterization and Manufacturing

(MC3M), will help standardize production and testing for living cells.

MC3M is expected to be the first of its kind in the United States and partner with various research

and clinical institutions, including Georgia Tech, the University of Georgia and Emory University.

The University of Georgia recently started construction on its Center for Molecular Medicine. Every research program within the center’s new building will have a clear link to human disease, with an emphasis on translational research that positively impacts human health. As part of its mission, the center also will train undergraduate and graduate students for careers in the biomedical sciences.

Quick Start helps Baxalta (formerly Baxter International)

Quick Start recently opened a $14 million state-of-the-art biotech training facility near the new Baxalta facility, which is scheduled to be fully operational in 2018.

Owned by the state of Georgia and operated by Quick Start, this facility is a key component of the state’s long-term initiative to promote and grow the life sciences industries.

Thus, while the training center will be dedicated to Baxalta for now, it includes space to accommodate the training needs of additional life science companies that might want to locate or expand in Georgia.

Employment-at-Will State

Georgia has no employment laws that are more stringent or restrictive than those at the federal level. In the absence of a written contract and in compliance with federal employment laws, employers in Georgia are able to exercise their own hiring and dismissal decisions; state laws make no provisions for wrongful discharge.

One-Stop Permitting: Georgia offers a consolidated state environmental program with delegated authority from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for issuance and enforcement of federal permits. One-stop permitting enables prospective

industries to obtain expedited required permits.

Georgia is home to more than 75 cold chain facilities owned or operated by third-party logistics providers, totaling more than 14 million in square footage. Furthermore, hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (hJIA) is home to the atlanta Perishables Complex, a 32,000-square-foot facility featuring on-site distribution and transport capabilities, USDA inspection services and USDA-approved fumigation chamber.
