“Hardware” in Biotechnology

Laboratory

• PCR Thermocyclers

• Tissue Culture - Incubators

Industrial

• Vaccines / Pharmaceuticals – TTIs - TIs

• Fermenters – heat removal!

• Waste treatment plants

Page 7: Biotechnology Thermal “Needs” Paul Nesvadba EVITHERM meeting at PTB Berlin, 17 th May 2004

Industrial Fermentation

• The optimum fermentation temperature is about 32 °C

• The heat of formation of ethanol is 1.2 MJ / kg of ethanol

• Cooling is necessary in order for the yeast to survive and work efficiently

Brewing

• The oldest biotechnology process

• 8000 years ago in Babylon

• Today’s large scale brewing is highly sophisticated

• Involves many heating and cooling steps
