Dawes Association Reunion was held in August in Healdsburg, California, along and view the pictures and read the accounts of our latest reunion. Come For those of us who attended, it was a wonderful time. There's a quaintness about rural town Healdsburg. The tourists who have discovered the small burg have found a gem of a get-a-way. The weather was perfect even with the disruption of a 6.1 earthquake whose epic center was 50 miles away in Napa, California. It goes without saying that it's the people who attend who make the reunion a success. Over the many years of my involvement, I always look forward to seeing our regulars. It goes without saying, there's an element of comradery as each family arrives; a satisfaction in meeting once again. Having our national reunions provide opportunities for younger generations to become involved. Many of us want to learn about our forefathers, their trials and travails. You too, have a story and your story connects with the other "leaves" that are part of this awesome Family Tree. I urge you to get involved and learn about what has already been discovered about your ancestry. You just might be amazed. Janie Melton Sihilling

The California reunion was a success! It's always so good seeing those folks you've met before but also meeting

those whom you have not met and those who are attending for the first time and seeing how much they enjoy it.

President Janie and I talk regularly about the newsletter, reunions, family events and thoughts for the future of theAssociation. A few weeks before the California reunion she commented she was going to try to put together apower point for the reunion relating to family histcry. I mentioned about my extensive files and that I would seewhat I could send to help out. As we talked we realized it would be a real advantage to get together and work on

it together and not long after that she arrived in Pennsylvania and the fun began.

We spent several days of long hours delving through past newsletters searching for family pictures, interestingstories, and general history of the life and family of J.W. Dawes. The more we read the more intrigued we got.We went through my files of things that have been donated to me and forwarded pictures to Janie's husband, Cal,who agreed to input and consolidate it all. What a blessing that was as we could then focus our attention onresearch and compiling. Another good source was ancestry.com which recently added the feature of pictures ofgravestones and we were able to include pictures of the tombstones of several of J.W.'s children. (There is not astone on his grave.) After she returned to Minnesota there were numerous emails and long phone calls trackingthe whereabouts of items that had belonged to the earlier generations, adding, editing and correcting information.

Even within hours of leaving for California we were making finishing touches.

We soon realized this is a "work in progress". Time was limited allowing making additional contacts. Somecontacts were too busy to look for "packed away somewhere" information. And then another issue is, "we have abox of old pictures that have been passed on but there are no names on them". Still, we were pleased to present

what we had at the Saturday evening gathering.

Our hope and goal of locating pictures of each cf J.W.'s children was not successful. We are still hopeful oflocating pictures of Jeremiah, Samuel and George, three of J.W. sons. We will continue adding to thispresentation and look forward to presenting an updated and expanded version at the next reunion.

HOW ABOUT YOU??? DO YOU HAVE ONE OF THOSE BOXES THAT HAVE BEEN PASSED ON? WE

KNOW THERE ARE STILL MANY PICTURES AND INFORMATION OUT THERE AND I ENCOURAGE YOU

TO CONTACT ME AND LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE THAT WOULD BE A HELPFUL ADDITION

TO SHARE ABOUT THE DAWES HERITAGE.

My email, phone number and address are listed on page 2 Ardath Dawes

On behalf of the Officers and Members of the Dawes Association, I would like to say thanks to Diana

and Bob Green for hosting our reunion.

The Greens' chose a niche in Sonoma County that represented thearea's industry -fields of beautiful lush grape vines with groupings ofmany small communities of hardworking people who support theindustry. Diana arranged a chartered tour bus; guests boarded andseveral destinations were planned for the Saturday tour. At the firstvineyard guests boarded "2014-style covered wagons" and were takento four different areas where a specific grape was grown. At each stop, guests were able to taste the specific grape and then were invited totaste the wine made from the grape.

After wine tasting, the group rode a short distance to the Francis Coppola's restaurant and museumwhere an outdoor lunch under a canopy was served.

Others, who decided to not go on the tour, spent their time visiting other points of interest or relaxingand visiting under a shaded patio.

Later that evening, we all gathered at a nearby restaurant for supper and then for the associationmeeting. The main focus of the meeting was a Power Point presentation which spanned time starting

with J.W. Dawes and family living in Loch Berlin, New York arfea, where he worked on the Erie Canal (circa 1808). The timeline

continued through the rest of his life and encompassed each ofhis children and their families and his continued work on the

Erie Canal Extension in Pennsylvanian and his last move toWisconsin where he died and was buried.

Other Dawes cousins were highlighted in the Power Point due totheir significant contributions such as inventors, entertainers, etc. If you would like a copy of the Power Point, contact Jane at

    immsihillinqffqmail.com.

Diana concluded our time together Sunday morning with a short morning service. Janie Sihilling

Can't believe it has been almost a month since our time in Healdsburg for the Dawes Family Reunion.

Doug and I were so fortunate to be able to attend with my brother Charles Sihilling (93653) and ourmother Mary Sihilling Ozmun (9365). We all especially enjoyed getting together for our evening mealsand just relaxing and visiting. We were so impressed with the amount of time and energy that wentinto our Saturday evening power point presentation presented by Jane Sihilling (93625) and ArdathDawes. It was so impressive. Doug couldn't get over the longevity of the Dawes family even in the1800's. Bob and Diana Green did a fantastic job putting everything together for us all. Many, manythanks to them for all the hard work they put into making a perfect weekend. They even included avery large earthquake! Glad everyone was OK.

Great seeing everyone!! Doug and Sheri Sihilling Wilson (93654)

Vicki and I enjoyed our time at the reunion. The Melton siblings were all there except one (due to aprior obligation) and we had not all been together for quite some time.

We were blessed to see Aunt Mary. I had not seen her for a long time. Also cousins, some I had nevermet, some I hadn't seen for a long time. It was special to see them and visit with them.

Also, had the chance to see nephew Brian. And of course, other members of the Dawes tree, some Ihad never met. I am very glad that we were able to attend.

Thanks Diana for organizing and planning. The wine tour was very interesting.

Thanks Cal for getting the house. Great idea, and offered a place for fellowship. We had a good time.Jerry Melton

Fall in Kansas is beginning to show itsbehaviors; lawns beginning to slow down, crickets being vocal, grasshoppers still hopingfor a few more days of life before a freeze takesthem (YEA), fields of cornturning brown and ready forharvest, soybeans losing theirleaves in preparation forharvest and fields beingreadied for wheat planting. Allall, farmers are pretty happy!! We have cutmost of the dry land corn and irrigated corn willbe ready in about 10 days. We arc preparingfields for wheat planting by applying dryfertilizer and incorporating it by discing theground. When the grasshoppers disappear, wewill field cultivate ahead of the drill and plantour winter red wheat. Soybean and miloharvest will be in competition with wheatplanting. Weather determines what comes first.

The Dawes reunion was great fun. Visiting thewine country was very informative. We enjoyedthe tours and our guide was great. Yes, we all"sipped" wine as we toured. Thanks, Bob andDiane Green for planning the event.

A most remembered event for me was the

earthquake (6.1) that hit the Nappa Vallev areaon Saturday. My son, Brian, and I were stayingin a motel in Santa Rosa and IT was for real.Wow, the first for me!!

This Dawes reunion had a very special meaningto me because all but one of my siblings was inattendance. This reunion was the first for mybrother Jerry and wife Vickie (Melton) fromVicksburg, Miss, and the first for my son BrianStoskopf from Riverbank, California. Sister JanHaney and brother LaVern Melton were inattendance and of course Janie and Cal(Sihilling) it was awesome!

It was also special, for the first time, to meetthe Jade and Forrest Green and it was also theirfirst time to attend a reunion. It is always aspecial treat to see Aunt Mary Ozman. Two ofher children, Charles Sihilling and Sheri andDoug Wilson were in attendance too- greatcousins!

Janie and Ardath, Thanks for your Power Pointpresentation—it was powerful!! I can't imaginethe work involved in finding all of theinformation. The Ananias branch had the most

people represented, but John and Ardath—weclaim you as part of us!!

I recently attended the funeral of my uncleLaurence Twaddell. We attended his 100thbirthday celebration on July 23. He was a greatuncle and will surely be missed.

I am planning an Essmiller-Stoskopf Thanksgiving dinner this year. I will share more in thenext newsletter. Our blended family memberslive in distant states, so it's always hard to geteveryone together—hopefully we will this year.

    Sylvia Scott 93642Manhattan, Kansas

Laurence Twaddell passed away on September11, 2014. He fell and broke his other hip ashad broken one 5 years ago. He opted to havesurgery as didn't really want to lay in bed therest of his life. The surgery went well andseemed fine for a few hours but then his blood

pressure went way down. They put him in ICUand tried various things but his heart was justtoo tired to keep going. Kathy managed to flyin before he died as well as Mary came backdown from Onaga. Our sons that lived here gotup to see him as well as their wives too.Anyway, we all got to say good-bye. Know he isup with Mom and John and the rest of thefamily where he has wanted to be for a while. We were lucky to have had him stay with us to

  • 100 so had gotten to celebrate several timeswith family and friends.

Mary Twaddell Carpenter's daughter, CatieCarpenter Shaffer and husband Kyle had a babygirl, Callihan, born on Dad's birthday, July 23rd.We thought that was quite special and Dad didget to see and hold her. Mary is Laurence andAvis Twaddell's youngest daughter.

We have been traveling some and will continueto do this while we can. We plan to headsouthwest in January where it is warmer for afew weeks and will hope to see Aunt Mary andcousins on the way and coming back toKansas. We were hoping to get to the reunionbut just too much going on this year. Ourfamily gets together for a family vacation everyyear and this year we spent a week in Bransonin August.

    Doris Fox (93732)Beloit, Kansas

After the nice Shurts family reunion out at AuntLeta's, Arnold and I hosted a get together thatevening for the McMann reunion. We had agood hail storm on August 31. It did a lot ofdamage to every building we have. They saidwe had golf ball size to baseball size and Listedfor 30 minutes.

    Vera Melton Brichalli (93626)Springfield, Missouri

Recently Mario and I were able to take thevacation we had dreamed of for many years. Wearrived in Bellagio, Italy on September 2.Mario's father was

    raised in this area

    and still has cousins

living there today. We visited hisfather's family homein Visgnola anddrove to the town ofCaspoggio, the birthplace of his grandparents. A familyreunion was held in

Caspoggio where wewere able to visit

with many relatives, ate wonderful NorthernItalian food and saw the Italian Alps. It was trulymagnificent. We also traveled to Colico, Piona,Mandello Del Lario, Bergamo, Varenna andTremezzo. These six towns were in Northern

Italy and all but Bergamo were on the shores ofLake Como. We did drive south and spent time

in Marina Di Massa which is a resort along theLigurian Sea. We also drove to Pisa and yes thetower is still leaning.

The last day was spent back up in Caspoggiowhere we drove way up in the mountains andhad a meal prepared by cousins Bruno andMarco Scilironi. It was a beautiful day for diningalfresco.

We truly spent 3 1/2 weeks with the commonItalian people and felt so welcomed, they wouldgive you the shirt off their back. The languagebarrier was really not a problem as severalcousins spoke very good English. We havealready decided a return trip is a must but wehave a feeling that we will be entertaining somespecial relatives before then.

Seasonal change is on the way not so muchhere in southern Florida! Summer was a goodtime for the family, We were able to get all ourlittle family to Mercer county Pa. for a smallreunion at my niece Melissa Mohr's home inWest Salem township, and a couple of eveningspartying, at my sister, Carol's pool. Thegrandchildren had a ball meeting up with newacquaintance, sharing fun and the cool watersof the early June surprise temperatures.Whatever happened to that Global Warmingtheory?

  • My brother Keith was so gracious in offering atime of reunion at his home overlooking theShenango Reservoir. A highlight of the weekspent there was a breakfast on Wednesdayattended by some of the extended relatives, local to Greenville Pa. area, held at the GoldenArch family Restaurant. A usual bi-monthlycousins breakfast, was hastily set up for the outof townees, by changing the day upon myrequest! (thank you very much) It was great torekindle and joust with a couple cousins that Ispent my early youth days, growing up with, onthe old Charlie Dawes farm. Ardath and Johnwere so kind to make such an effort inorganizing the day, and it flew by so quickly, our kids were amazed, it was enjoyed by all,and good fellowship is always a blessing.

Now the awesome news of the Pennsylvaniajourney, all the family, all 8 of us got to stay inthe old homestead. So cool, Tillie and CharlieDawes house, for a week! My Dad grew up inthat house, I remember chasing about in it as achild. I found a VHS tape of a small reunion thattook place in 1990 that took place at the houseand we had a night that my sister and herfamily came and sat there in the renovatedhome, the LARGE home. This old quaint but socomfortable home. We v/atchecl the videc andlaughed at ourselves. We ached, inside, seeingour parents and some of the siblings of ourfather, grandfather, who grew up there in thathouse, missing them.

The time afforded us in the house was by thenow owner Lisa Selnekovic Zarwell, We thankyou Lisa.

Since the last newsletter we have been blessedwith time with family. We had our local yearlyDawes reunion and our bi-monthly "cousinsbreakfasts". Both are opportunities to shareour stories and get better acquainted. We arealways finding out something new about eachother and have lots of laughter. It was a specialbonus to have all the Lon Dawes family hereand I'm sure a time they will never forget asLon shared in his contribution above.

It was joy having Janie Sihilling here for severaldays and we are grateful for the DawesAssociation that has given us the opportunity tomeet and develop friendships.

We felt very fortunate to be a part of theCalifornia reunion and grateful to Diana Greenfor her efficient and interesting plans for us.Our son Andrew joined us and we did alot ofsightseeing before, during and after thereunion. Because of the lower rates andwanting to visit Death Valley and other areas weflew into Las Vegas a few days earlier and"touristed" over to Healdsburg for thereunionand a different route back. I'll have toadmit I didn't do especially well with all thehours spent going up the mountains c. alllllthose miles of narrow hairpin curves. Grandma "Sylvie" and Her Soap Opera

Grandma loved to watch "All My Children". After Mike and Igot married in 1968,1 worked about 10

minutes awayfrom Grandma's house and would often go byand have lunch with her. Ifound out realquick that when I had the late lunch shift Iprobably did not want to go to Grandma's if Iwanted orneeded to talk to her. If her "story" was on we did not talk until it was over, which did not give us muchtime and so funny, even if Ihad not seen the show for a few weeks, Icertainly had not missed much.

Always easy to catch up!! No matter what, it was alwaysfun to be with Grandma!

Mom, MarySihilling Ozmun, just told us that Grandma started watching her "story" when she was

working at Newport Harbor High School....that was a long time ago!

What I loved most about Grandma was that she seemed like such a saint (which she was of course,

because she was a child of God's) but she was always so real in how she lived her life.

pictures which we were able to use in the power point presentation.
