Executive Meeting Report — April 2015

Carol Darou was thanked for hosting this meeting. President (Carol Darou) - Sue Matte outlined her plans for our 25th Anniversary party with discussion and guidance being provided by the Executive. Carol advised that the 200th Anniversary quilt will be on display at QOTT. Gloria (Secretary) had raised questions regarding Archives; discussion followed on what needs to be kept in Archives. Carol advised that Committee year end reports are due at the May Executive meeting. Vice President (Marilyn Robinson) - advised where the May Executive meeting is being held. She asked that people car pool if possible. Past President (Jean Sherwin) - would like to start looking for a Vice President for next year so that the person can be involved from January ready for the November 2016 sale. Treasurer (Janice Spitz) - the report was reviewed and approved. Block of the Month (Cathy Price) - showed the Tree row and explained what was involved in making it. Library (Marie Amyot) - showed the library books for April. Membership (Muriel Hopper) - Muriel will be away in May, but Rosemarie Alarie will be taking care of Membership in her absence. Newsletter (Lynne Green) - advised the deadline for April’s newsletter articles

Outreach (Anna Cornel) - in Anna’s absence, Gloria advised that the EMC published a photo of the quilt but only in black and white. The 2015 bursary is going to Smiths Falls Collegiate Institute. Program (Alexis Mongeau) - provided an update on preparations for the May Challenge. She also reviewed the workshops for April and May, and outlined what she is working on so far for next year. Publicity (Arlene Pellett) - showed the poster for Retta Rive’s trunk show this month. Social (Barb Dodds) - advised all is going well.

March 2015 Meeting Review

There were 80 members and 3 visitors attending our February meeting. Door prizes were donated by Linda Bates and Mara Harrison. The winners were Terri Marsden and Karen Miller. We were treated to a small but lovely Show and Tell, with nine items shown. Anna Cornel presented this year’s Outreach charity quilt to representatives of The Great War Memorial Hospital of Perth District Foundation, who advised monies raised on raffling the quilt will be going towards a family room. Carol Darou presented membership pins to Cate Nesbitt and Janette Wood. Carol then announced a proposition from Perth Fair to provide money towards fabric, etc., for someone to make a Queen size quilt for 2016. Information is on the notice table at the back. Heather Buchan announced that the Lombardy Fair is holding a quilt block competition to celebrate its 150th Anniversary (see full information in this newsletter). Jean Sherwin advised that she has filled the three positions advertised; the Secretary position is a voted position, so others can still put their names forward if interested and a vote will be done at the May AGM. Nancy Jossinet advised that there are still spots available for the April Retreat, so give her a call. Cathy Price showed the Butterfly Row for March’s BOM; there are two blocks in the row. Marie Amyot introduced the books she had purchased for the Library this month.

Alexis Mongeau advised that there are four spots left in the second class being held for High Tech Tucks on May 26. She also advised that anyone taking Al Côté’s workshop on May 6 can purchase the backing from him. In lieu of a guest speaker, five stations were set up for demonstrations of various techniques by Guild members, as follows: a quick and easy strip-method to make prairie points to adorn quilt edges (Rosemary Alarie); the art of stained glass (Colleen Richardson); stack and wack which is an easy way to create quilt blocks with unique kaleidoscope designs (Rick Richardson); how to use the True Cut Circle cutter as well as a couple of quilting machines (Sue Gieretz); modern ideas in using piping to enhance and complement your quilts (Molly Hartin).

Block of the Month

Welcome everyone to the final row of this year’s Block of the Month. It will be a Row of Trees. I tried a number of different methods of making this row, including paper pieced. But since I promised no paper piecing on this project, I settled on piecing with templates. I hope you have enjoyed this journey and had fun. ~ Cathy ~

Did you know?

This month’s “F” word ideas for completing your UFOs (by Pamela J. Durant in QNM September 2006): Keep part of a UFO near your sewing machine, ready to

sew. Then when you are chain piecing, instead of cutting off the thread, sew a seam between pieces on a UFO;

Also, keep an uncut part of a UFO near the cutting table so while you are cutting pieces for a new project, you can cut something for your UFO.

Your tips, hints or general news are needed for this section or elsewhere in the newsletter, so please email or give them to Lynne Green. Thanks.
