It is crunch time because when we return from break we will have 3 weeks until finals and the end of the semester. Winter sports have started and we are getting into the games and matches for our student athletes. It is vital that they get rest and organize their time so they can stay up on their classes. For those parents who have just finished a fall sport, you should have received a survey on your student athletes’ season. Please take the time to fill those out so we can get feedback on our season and coaches. The survey can also be found on the front page of our website. In addition to winter sports, we have a number of concerts and events that occur in the month of December. If you have not had a chance to attend a concert, I highly suggest you do. We have an outstanding music program and it is well worth the time. On December 4 th we will have an Orchestra concert, on December 11 th a band concert, and on December 18 th a Choir concert. As always we are hoping you can carve out some time to join and support the BHHS Booster club. Our meeting in December is on Wednesday, December 10 th at 6:30 here in our staff lounge. One of the things I would like to get started here at Black Hills is a Hall of Fame. I would like to start both an Athletic Hall of Fame and an “Overall Hall of Fame” (for a graduate that has gone on to do something extraordinary with their life post high school). These are still in the infant stages, but I wanted to get word out to our community to see what kind of support there is for these ideas. Last, I can tell you that you are raising a wonderful group of citizens. The student body here at Black Hills High School is amazing and does positive things every day. I know we are not able to send out all the good things that your sons and daughters are doing here at school, but please know we see things every day that prove what wonderful people we have within our student body. Thank you for sending us your best on a daily basis. As we continue to work to improve our school, feedback from the students, parents and the community is an important part of this process. Anytime you have a concern, question, or feedback, please drop me a line. I truly feel blessed to have the opportunity to be the principal here at Black Hills High School and I thank you for your support as we constantly strive to improve. DECEMBER 2014

Dear WolfPack Nation,

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving break and is ready for the 3 week push to

Winter Break! It is crunch time because when we return from break we will have 3 weeks until finals and the end of the semester.

Winter sports have started and we are getting into the games and matches for our

student athletes. It is vital that they get rest and organize their time so they can stay up on their classes. For those parents who have just finished a fall sport, you should have

received a survey on your student athletes’ season. Please take the time to fill those out

so we can get feedback on our season and coaches. The survey can also be found on the front page of our website.

In addition to winter sports, we have a number of concerts and events that occur in the

month of December. If you have not had a chance to attend a concert, I highly suggest

you do. We have an outstanding music program and it is well worth the time. On December 4th we will have an Orchestra concert, on December 11th a band concert, and

on December 18th a Choir concert.

As always we are hoping you can carve out some time to join and support the BHHS Booster club. Our meeting in December is on Wednesday, December 10th at 6:30 here in

our staff lounge.

One of the things I would like to get started here at Black Hills is a Hall of Fame. I would

like to start both an Athletic Hall of Fame and an “Overall Hall of Fame” (for a graduate that has gone on to do something extraordinary with their life post high school). These

are still in the infant stages, but I wanted to get word out to our community to see what

kind of support there is for these ideas.

Last, I can tell you that you are raising a wonderful group of citizens. The student body here at Black Hills High School is amazing and does positive things every day. I know we

are not able to send out all the good things that your sons and daughters are doing here

at school, but please know we see things every day that prove what wonderful people we have within our student body. Thank you for sending us your best on a daily basis.

As we continue to work to improve our school, feedback from the students, parents and

the community is an important part of this process. Anytime you have a concern, question, or feedback, please drop me a line.

I truly feel blessed to have the opportunity to be the principal here at Black Hills High School and I thank you for your support as we constantly strive to improve.

Have a Wonderful December and Winter break!! Write to you again in January!!

Dave Myers Principal – Black Hills High School

Recent Attendance Policy Inquiries

Attendance and Students 18+ Students who turn 18 still need to have the parent/guardian excuse their absence or tardy. We do not allow the student

to excuse themselves.

What is Period 8?

When you receive a message from the auto dialer reporting an absence in 8th period, this is the timeslot assigned to the 30-minute PACK time following second period, where your student goes for extra help in another subject, other than

their second period class.

Absent in just one period on a certain date?

If you receive the automated system informing you that your student was absent for a particular class, but you feel the absence is in error, please have your student contact the teacher directly to discuss the absence. I am unable to change

the absence without the authorization from the teacher directly.

Contact Mrs. Barrett at 709-7815 if you have other questions about our Attendance Policy.

Senior Updates

There are several steps throughout the senior year you need to check off your to-do list.

Step 1: If your student plans on attending a four year college or university, they should

have their applications completed by the first of the year. (University of Washington’s deadline is Dec.1st) Colleges may want official SAT or ACT scores. These must be sent through the testing clearinghouse. Any score sent by BHHS will be considered unofficial. If you still need to take one of these tests, register on line. You can have your scores sent to 4 colleges for free if you list at the time of registering for the test. Infor-mation can be found on the Counseling/Career Center webpage.

If your student is planning on attending a 2yr or vocational school, they should apply now as

well. You can go onto SPSCC’s website and apply to any community college in the state with that one appli-cation. There may be an application fee for some.

Keep track of important dates- scholarships, financial aid. Every college is different. Seniors should be looking at the Scholarship Bulletin on our webpage every week for new opportunities.

Step 2: Get your resume and community service hours into Mrs. Jones ASAP. Step 3: Verify your name as it should appear on your birth certificate. Do this in the Career Center. Step 4: Fill out your FAFSA as close to the Jan. 1 opening date as possible. To complete this, go to FAF-SA.gov. Both student and parent will be a PIN. This step is a must if you hope to receive financial aid or scholarships through the college, whether it is a 4yr, 2yr or technical program. There will be more infor-mation in January about available help with the FAFSA process. Step 5: Start preparing for you Senior Exit Interview. Signups will be at the end of January with inter-views scheduled in March. You must have all your community services documented as well as your final re-sume turned in before signing up. Information on the interview can be found on our website.

If you are a graduating senior male, age 18 and planning on attending college with the help of financial aid, you must register with the Selective Service. This should be done within 30 days of your birthday. To register online, go to www.sss.gov. ASVAB will be given on December 11th in the Career Center. Students can sign up in the Career Center.

When weather or other events impact our ability to transport our students or to operate our schools, these are the procedures that we typically follow. Beginning at about 5:45 AM, the district provides delay and closure information to local television and radio stations using www.flashalert.net. Information is posted to both this site and to Tumwater School District site, www.tumwater.k12.wa.us.

At 6:00 AM we call and send an email to all District parents and staff using our SchoolMessenger system. To update your contact information, please call your school. You may also call the district’s information line 709-7999, watch KOMO Channel 4, KING Channel 5, KI-RO Channel 7, or KCPQ Channel 13 or check any of the following radio stations A.C.T. DAYS ARE IMPACTED BY LATE START

If weather causes a late start on a Friday A.C.T. day, students will be released at the regularly scheduled time. There will be no early release for teacher collaboration.

HOW ARE DECISIONS MADE? When weather events happen, there are always questions about the process for making decisions to delay or close schools. Here are typical steps that are followed. 3:00-5:00 AM: The Transportation Supervisor drives bus routes to determine road conditions. He also checks local, state and regional weather forecast information. 5:15 AM: The Transportation Supervisor makes recommendations to the Superintendent relative to school closure or late start. The Superintendent may check forecasts and consult with other local school district lead-ers before making the final decision by 5:45 AM, when he contacts staff to alert the media Snow Routes can be found on our web page under the headline: Storms this Year?
