Today, on this Fifth Sunday in Ordi-

nary Time, we hear the end of this

“day in the life of Jesus” as recorded

by Mark. This busy day of teaching,

healing, exorcising ends with a visit

to Peter’s house in Capernaum. We

hear Jesus healing Peter’s mother-in-

law and then her rising to wait on

them. While we are not told of the

dinner, we can imagine that Jesus and

his friends end this busy day with

fellowship and food in Peter’s house. Oh, the stories that they must have shared

as they looked back on this full day.

The gathering of friends and family and the sharing of meals are so important to

our lives. It is around our meals that we often share our greatest dreams and our

deepest concerns. It is around meals that we laugh with gusto and pause in mo-

ments of tender affection for those who are closest to us. This meal, this feast,

the Mass that we celebrate today invites us to see each other as family, as

friends, gathered by Jesus, in his Spirit, to share our deepest longings for love,

peace, and mercy. Around a dinner table, there are no strangers, only friends.

Today, many of our homes are going to be filled with food and special meals as

families and friends gather for the Super Bowl. This day is not only a day of the

big game but also special commercials. It is a special day of friendships shared

around tables of plenty. As we clean our tables tonight, whoever wins, like Pe-

ter’s mother-in-law, we can know that we have been blessed in this day.

In ten days, Lent will arrive with Ash Wednesday. We will begin the season of

fasting in which we are invited to set aside some meals and to take a different

approach to food. It is a season of less as we prepare for the great celebration of

Easter. Fasting offers us an opportunity to appreciate the blessings of food and

fellowship in our lives. At the same time, fasting in any form we choose unites

us and our hearts in solidarity with those who daily live in want and need of

food, water, and fellowship. While we still have a chance, now is a time to pre-

pare for how we will fast in the season of Lent — beyond the required days of

fast and abstinence — and how we might share our plenty with others in the

forty days of this holy season. Again, we are invited to consider sharing monies

saved by fasting from meals or meals out with Christian Community Service

Center, Casa Juan Diego or any agency that helps to feed the hungry of our com-

munity or the world.

Blessings and enjoy your Super Bowl feast!

Bienvenidos

Día de Bendiciones

E N E S PA Ñ O L
