LiteracyReading Spelling & Grammar Writing

We are learning to read for fun and information

We are learning about the alphabet and how to read and spell ew words

Use the spelling approach; Look, cover, write, checkWe are learning to write letters with the correct

formation on their own and in sentences. Task: Set Text

Read your allocated book on Bug Club. Make sure you click on the bugs to complete the questions to earn your coins to play the fun games, build your treehouse or keep getting those stickers!!!At the end of your online book will be a task for you to complete. It may be something to talk about, do, draw or write.Keep practising your sight words regularly. Along with your sound knowledge these will help you read your set text on bug club more fluently.

Challenge: Keep looking for words and sentences in texts that aren’t familiar to you. E.g. recipe books, newspaper, magazines, tablet or computer. Use your sound knowledge, picture clues or the sight words you know to help you with this.

Task: The Lighthouse Keeper’s LunchIn the Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch, the authors used many words to describe things that may be unfamiliar to you. Read or listen to the book again and have think about what these words mean and try to find at least one word that could mean the same thing:-

e.g. delicious – yummy, tasty, scrumptious

industrious – devoured –scavenging –brazen –

Task: To sing the alphabet song and recognise alphabetical order.

Log into your bug club account and click on the icon that says ‘grammar and spelling’ in My Stuff.

Watch the video, sing the song*, learn the letter names then play both of the games. When played, you will earn coins and the games will be stored in your library so you can play them again. You might want to have the alphabet chart (attached below) in front of you:

o In game 1 you need to know the alphabetical order.

o In game 2 you need to know the correct names for both small and capital letters.

*The song in the video is slightly different from the lyrics on the Alphabet Chart – can you spot what it is?*

Task: ew

*ew is the last sound in the sound family ue, u_e and ew.*

Using your favourite creative writing or a mixture of all of them practise your ew spelling words.

Write your spelling words on the ground outside with chalk. Get someone to call out the word then quick as you can find the word by bouncing a ball on it or scooting water on it!!! If you have another fun game let your friends know about it on team chats!!!

Below you will find a pages with ew pictures cards. Either print it out and cut up the cards or make your own by copying the words and images onto squares of paper or card.

o Use the cards to play a memory game, snap or just as vocabulary prompts and flash cards.

Task: Practise the correct formation for lower case letters. Using the Alphabet Writing Mat as a guide have a look at

each letter and try to form them starting from the dot. Letters can be grouped depending on where they start their formation:

o Curly caterpillar letters:- a ,c, d, g, o, q; these letters all start at the top and form a ‘c’ initially which sits nicely on the line. f, and s form a little ‘c’ initially above the line and e curls up first before forming ‘c’.

o Right arm robot letters:- b, h, k, m, n, p, r; these letters can be tall or short. You start at the top of the letter and go down the straight back then you go back up the same line before going over a little hump, like the robot’s arm.

o Ladder letters:- l, i, t, j, u, y; can be tall or short and all start at the top of the letter. You go down the straight back then either round up and over or round under and up. Take your pencil off before crossing the ‘t’ or dotting the ‘i’ and ‘j’. *remember little dots, not great big ugly ones!!!

o Zig Zag Monster letters:- v, w, x, z; the most important thing about these letters is that you make sure you have noticeable points and straight lines. You start at the top of the letters then go down at an angle, z is the exception where you go across first. When forming ‘x’ you need to take your pencil off then back on.

Use the lined sheet attached as a guide for your tall, short and tail below the line letters. Or use your jotter and draw in your own guidelines using pencil:

Task: Write words and sentences using the correct formation and guidelines.

Write your name and some words of your choice to practise the formation using the guidelines.

Use the Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch word mats below to write 2 or more sentences about what Mr Grinling does on certain days.

o You could start your sentences with ‘On Monday…’, ‘On Tuesday…’ etc.

Remember to start your sentences with a *capital letter and end with a full stop and don’t forget those important finger spaces.*Capital letters are all tall letters; see ‘Alphabet Chart’ to help with formation. All Names and places begin with a capital letter.Key words: with, my, was, theJoining words: and, but, becauseEndings:- …ing, …ed; work, working, worked; clean,

Missing AddendsFirstly, addends are the numbers in an adding calculation e.g. in 5+3=7, 5 and 3 are the addends and 7 is the answer. This week you should practise finding missing addendse.g. 5+□ = 8You can do this by

- using concrete materials: start by counting out 5 then in a separate pile keep counting until you get to 8. Count up how many extra you added on to get 8.

- using a number line: start at 5 then count on (1,2,3) until you are at 8.

- by recalling number bonds mentally: you might remember that 5+3=8.

• Choose a worksheet to complete below.• Play an adding game (see links in ICT).• Log on to Ten Town and practise any numbers you need to work on. It could be to help you with formation (remember each story has a rhyme) or the digits you need to write 10-20.

Sharing equallyThis week we will be learning about sharing. Talk about some of these words and what you think they mean:share, fair, unfair, equal, unequal, leftover, enough

To help you understand a bit more about sharing watch the Numberjacks video ‘Fair Shares’ (link in ICT section). Once you have finished have a look at the Fair Share sheet below. You do not need to write anything, simply talk about which pictures are fair and unfair and what could be done to make them all fair. You may want to use some objects to figure this out. • The next time you are having a snack help prepare it by sharing items out. Share out the items one at a time and try counting as you do it e.g. 1, 1; 2, 2; 3, 3. Talk about what is fair and unfair or equal and unequal. • Pick a game at home that involves sharing. It could be dominos, cards. At the start of the game share out the resources to everyone playing. Ask everyone to count how many they have to make sure you have shared them equally. • Practise sharing equally with Curious George. The link to the game is in the ICT section. • Challenge - Are there any patterns you notice when sharing? When you share between 2 people some numbers cannot be shared equally – try and spot the pattern by sharing out 3,4,5,6,7 and 8 between 2 people. Can you spot any other patterns?

IDL Health and WellbeingWe are learning about lighthouses and the water cycle We are learning to recognise ways we can show kindness to others

Expressive Arts:Art and Craft – Create a wax resistant picture of a lighthouse. Draw a lighthouse lightly with a pencil and colour it in with red and white crayons; rub out any pencil lines you have made. You will need to make sure that you colour in slowly and carefully to ensure no paper can be seen on your lighthouse. Think about the top of the lighthouse, the light coming out of it and the rocks at the bottom. Colour all these parts with a crayon. Next mix a tiny bit of blue paint with water to create a ‘wash’. Paint over your whole sheet of paper with your blue ‘wash’ and watch as your lighthouse stands out against the paint.

Science:The Water Cycle - We are learning all about the water cycle and evaporation. Listen to the story called, ‘Drop goes plop’ on Youtube; I have linked the story in the ICT column. Discuss the book with someone at home. Could you draw a picture of something that happened in the story? Let’s investigate! Using chalk draw round a puddle in the morning (or if it hasn’t been raining you could pour some water onto the ground), what do you think might happen? You could write it down and then go back and investigate in the afternoon to see what has happened and if you were right. Write down what has happened to the water. Is it still there, has it became more or less? Watch the Water cycle video on Youtube that is linked above.

Kindness: Have a chat with someone at home about what the word ‘Kindness’ means to

you. Can you think of a time where someone has been kind to you, what did they do? How did they make you feel?

Can you make a ‘Kindness jar’, think of 5 different things you could do for someone to be kind and make them smile. Write them on a piece of paper and every morning next week pick one out and make someone in your household smile!
