California University (CalU) and Millersville University are once again working with industry partners Synergis Technologies and Autodesk to host two, week-long science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) Boot Camps for teachers. Over the last three years, scores of teachers have attended these Boot Camp ses-sions to gain hands-on exposure and learn new skills in the use of the Autodesk industry-standard 3D engi-neering and design software. In addition to learning new techniques in the use of the software, the main goal of Boot Camp is to provide strategies for implementing emerging technologies into the STEM curriculum and to underscore the importance of integrating technology and engineering with science and mathematics. These emerging technologies, many of which have already been adopted by industry, include solid modeling, finite element analysis, digital prototyping, building information modeling, rapid prototyping, robotics, and design visualization using computer animation.

The Boot Camp at CalU is the week of June 21st and focuses on the Autodesk Design Academy suite of en-gineering and design software including AutoCAD, Inventor, Revit, and Civil 3D. This year, both Beginner and Advanced sessions will be offered in Inventor and Revit. In these sessions, attendees will work through a series of exercises involving extensive hands-on use of the software. Friday’s session will concentrate on Rapid Prototyping and present information on the various types of rapid prototyping technologies and equipment that are currently available. Attendees will gain an understanding of the rapid prototyping process from 3D CAD model to finished parts. This session will provide information on equipment and material costs, and look at the strengths and weaknesses of the various types of processes and equipment. This will be especially helpful for anyone who is considering purchasing rapid prototyping equipment. Attendees can register for individual days or the entire week; and eight – Act 48 hours will be awarded for each day attended. In addition, those register-ing for the entire week will have the option of earning three college credits from CalU. Attendees at the Inven-tor, Revit, and Civil 3D sessions will receive a free, personal learning edition of the software. For information on obtaining College credit for attending Boot Camp please contact Larry Horath at CalU: [email protected].

Building Robotics – Curriculum to Competition

The Boot Camp at Millersville is the week of August 2nd. This will be a week long session concentrating on the Autodesk VEX Robotics Curriculum. The VEX Robotics Design System is the most popular and widely used platform for students to learn about robotics and areas rich with career opportunities spanning science, technol-ogy, engineering and math. These are just a few of the many fields students can explore by creating with VEX Robotics technology. Beyond science and engineering principles, a VEX Robotics project encourage teamwork, leadership and problem solving among groups. It also allows educators to easily customize projects to meet the level of students’ abilities. The affordable VEX platform is expanding rapidly and is now found in middle schools, high schools and university labs around the globe. Boot Camp East will provide an in-depth look at the Autodesk VEX Curriculum which concentrates on the design process. Attendees will learn the STEM connec-tions in the curriculum, gain hands-on experience with Autodesk Inventor to design virtual robotic systems on the computer, then work in teams to assemble a VEX Protobot. On the final day of the workshop teams will compete in a Robot Challenge. Attendees must register for the entire week and will receive 40 – Act 48 hours in addition to a free copy of the Autodesk VEX Robotics Curriculum to use at their schools.

On-campus housing and meal plans are available for both Boot Camps. To register and/or receive more information and a detailed itinerary for Boot Camp please contact Christina Green at [email protected] or call 1-800-836-5440.

Autodesk 2011 product tutorials will be available by June 1 on the Synergis Educational Learning Portal. The Portal is a great way to learn the Autodesk family of applications when classroom training is not convenient. Not only can you enroll in online tutorials where you can earn PA Act 48 and NJ 100 Hours, but the classes are all mapped out in detail so if you only need a specific feature, it is easily accessible.

Current Synergis classroom training and events are all posted on the Portal’s calendar and also important mes-sages from our Academic Team. We are working on placing additional resources, video content and more on the site to extend the value of the Portal. New and experienced instructors agree this is a valuable resource for beginners or for updating your Autodesk knowledge.

If you do not have access to the Portal, but would like to check it out, please contact Christina Green ([email protected]) for a temporary password to take a look. We are interested in your opinion.

Students can gain access to this information for only $99 per year or additionally, schools can open their own site with the Autodesk tutorials and also post content of their own like homework assignments or any resources or information to share. Please contact Christina Green for more information.

Synergis continues to invest in our educators and the Portal is one more way we are helping to make the process convenient and affordable. We look forward to assisting educators and the future generation of engineers and designers. Please let us know how we can help.
