PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Not much has been going on since Bob & Judy's

big 50th anniversary. Dottie brown and Co. has

played all their planned performances. We had

our 1st Langford Family Reunion at Wallowa Lake

August 5th through 7th. Out of 27 of us 23

showed up. We had a wonderful time hiking,

swimming, paddle boating, rubber boating, ca-

noeing, mini golfing, go carting, and lots of eating

and visiting. Everyone had a great time. The only

complaint we received was that we needed 1

more day. And plans are in the works for next

year. Our granddaughter, Jaycee Zaugg and I

entertained in the evenings fiddling. I gave our

three great grandsons each a harmonica. You can

guess how they sounded. It was great.

Our Union Grassroots and the Elgin show went

good (See Union Co. news). Nancy Bruce has two

more shows under her belt and gets better each

time. Her husband, Pat, was helping family mem-

bers move.

We drove to Ontario and visited with a good

friend, Don Starr. Ended up with fresh corn on

the cob and apricots to bring home. Went on to

Nyssa for Vince and Doreen Bingham's show. We

had a great time. See Malheur Co. news. The

show was great and the senior center and the

Binghams did a great job again. Everyone en-

joyed the good food and music. A lot of people

danced for us.

By the time you read this Carolyn Stout's 4 days

at the Grant County Fair will be over. Sumpter,

Fort Union Grange and Baker City will wrap up the

season. Sure seems to have gone by fast this

year. Sometimes we have to put things on the

back burner to support the BMOTFA and I really

appreciate all your efforts of

support and I thank you.

"Carry on the tradition!"

Your friend, Denny Langford, President

Baker County News No news received.

Grant County News Leather Lace and a Happy Face was the theme of the 102 year old Grant County Fair in John Day August 24-27. While there wasn’t much leather or lace on the BMOTF stage, there were plenty of smiles while the Old Time Fiddlers entertained. The first performance of old time music was provided to open the fair on Wednesday. The number of those playing increased as the fair progressed and they played double performances for the next 3 days. Non member Hap McLeod supported the BMOTF members with backup for: Doreen Bingham of Adrian, OR Vince Bingham of Adrian, OR Vic Fusselman of Milton-Freewater, OR Joe Haddock of Pilot Rock, OR Evelene Haynes of Fruitland, ID Les Haynes of Fruitland, ID Bob Hunt of Sumpter, OR Angie Johnson of John Day, OR Clay "Skeeter" Johnson of John Day, OR Guy Johnson of John Day, OR Katie Johnson of John Day, OR Denny Langford of Union, OR Mark Ludwick of Umatilla, OR Alvin Shaw of Ontario, OR Bobby Stevens of Heppner, OR Ruel Teague of Burns, OR Bill West of Heppner, OR Fair attendance seemed down in numbers but the enthusiasm of those attending was just as high as ever. This event is a time when ranchers and farmers look forward to meeting their peers and catching up since seeing them at the fair the year prior. A small jam session took place one evening at my home, and we had a nice time sharing the evening meal potluck after the final performance on Saturday. Another jam session commenced after the dishes were done and my bed & breakfast guest from England liked to never let the players go home, they enjoyed the music so much. I’m sure I didn’t do everything the way I was supposed to as the director, but God’s grace abounds. I know this because none of the seasoned member read me the riot act or even discreetly “clued me in”. Thank you to everyone who made our County Fair one of the best in Oregon. Carolyn Stout

Malheur County News Hi from the east side. We had a super good show in Nyssa Sat night Aug.20th. I want to thank each and every one who came to play and help. It was really nice. Our players were: Wes Hennsley Bob Stevens Karen Bennett Les and Evelene Haynes Earl and Marcia Adams Vince and Doreen Bingham Bob Hunt Mark Ludwick Brian Brent Don and Kay McIntyer Bill Meyers Jesse Gilpin Charles Scoles Tom and Carolyn Vickroy Bob and June Miller Alvin Shaw Ray Carter Bob and Joy Moore Charles Pollock Denny Langford I Hope we didn't miss any one. We want to thank the girls who made all the great food, and the door and store keepers. Nothing works without all the wives that have to sit and wait. We thank you all. Till we meet again, God Bless you all. Vince and Doreen Bingham

Morrow County News Don’t have a lot to talk about this time. The excitement was all last month. Have been doing some tractor work the last week or so. Am getting ready to reseed some CRP grass. Have been having more breakdowns than anything else. I went to Hermiston and played music with Bill Meyers and his bunch. Then the next week Bill West went with me to play there again. On August 15th, we played for a couple hours at the Morrow County Fair. Tim and Maggie Collins, Bill West, Bill Meyers, Jay Tracy, Mark Ludwick, Kevin and Michele Hedgepeth and I played. It turned out good. We just don’t have enough bodies to play a gig anymore without help. Thanks everyone. We went to Nyssa to the fiddle show there, which was fun. Nothing else to say so will hang it up for now. See you in a tune,

Bob & Judy Stevens on their 50th anniversary

Umatilla County News July kept us busy with our grand daughter, Breanna Barton. She was the queen of the Umatilla County Fair Court. We used our wagon and team for support in a number of parades. Emigrant Springs was a great success. We were only able to be at one show. Aug. 17 Bobby Stevens asked a group of us to come to the fair at Heppner to help with music. It is always fun to play for and with the folks at Heppner. Lorre and I went to Nyssa for the show at the Nyssa Senior Center. It was good to see Vince and Doreen and all those folks from Idaho. Lorre and I took a long trip back home through the mountains and old hunting areas. Lorre thought that an eleven hour drive from Ontario to Hermiston was kind of extreme. Good luck comes to those who work hard and plan well. Keep the rosin on the causin. Bill & Lorre Meyers

Union County News Greeting Fellow BMOTFA members, Summer got a late start but it did finally come for a few days. I am lovin’ it. I don’t even care how hot it gets; I will take it all. And speaking of warm beautiful days we had a wonderful sun shining day for the Grassroots Festival in Union. We met at 1pm under the Gazebo in the City Park and played until 2pm. The performers were as follows: Nancy Bruce of La Grande, OR Les & Evelene Haynes of Fruitland, ID Cheryl Hall of Yakima, WA Denny Evans of Pendleton, OR Justin Williams of Pendleton, OR Jack Fox of La Grande, OR Melody Huitt of Union, OR Denny Langford of Union, OR We also had Steve Hines from Keating, OR as a back up. Denny, Melody, and Justin performed the closing hymn, “I Saw the Light”. Thanks to all those who came to cheer us on. Then later that evening most of same folks traveled to Elgin. There we met up with more Blue Mt Fiddlers and friends at the Elgin Fire Hall. We had a great time eating Pulled Pork sandwiches, Baked beans, Potato Salad, and drinks. Thank you Elgin Firefighters for serving us and

putting up with us all night. After that we had an even better time dancing and listening to the tunes performed by these musicians: Les & Evelene Haynes of Fruitland, ID Denny Evans of Pendleton, OR Justin Williams of Pendleton, OR Cheryl Hall of Yakima, WA Mark Ludwick of Umatilla, OR Bill Meyers of Hermiston, OR Bob Wiles Gifford Hulse of Elgin, OR Stef Gordon of Baker City, OR Mae Hulse of Elgin, OR Jack Fox of La Grande, OR Julia Milleson of Milton-Freewater, OR Vic Fusselman of Milton-Freewater, OR Nancy Bruce of La Grande, OR Bethel Croghan of Elgin, OR Tammy Croghan of Elgin, OR Tom Vickroy of Walla Walla, WA Denny Langford of Union, OR Joan Gray and Stef Gordon started out the evening playing the National Anthem and Nancy Bruce finished the evening with the closing Hymn, “Wings of a Dove”. Thank you everyone who comes and performs dances, listens, and claps we really appreciate all of you. Now go mark your calendars right now so you don’t forget! Sept. 16 - 5:00 Dinner, 6:00 ShowTime Fort Union Grange Hall in La Grande Driving directions: Coming East or West take the Union/ La Grande exit 265 (also known as the Flying J Truck Stop exit) off I 84 and turn left toward La Grande. Just past the Truck Stop turn right on McAlister Lane and cross the tracks, continue about half mile to the Grange Hall. That’s it from High Valley and Union County Remember that Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels.

Wallowa County News No news received.

Editor’s Bulletin Board Lew Holt is the web master for the Oregon Old Time Fiddlers Association. He recently contacted Denny & Colleen and offered to post the Rosin Dust on the state website. So now there is a link to the Rosin Dust on the home page of http://oregonoldtimefiddling.org/ thanks to Lew. If you have internet, the site has lots of other stuff in our area of interest. Check it out. I spent an entire week, 8/14-21, at the Centralia Old-Time Music Campout. The second day I organized a square dance for that evening. Because I had invited musicians to play, they thought that I ought to be the dance band leader (Uh, umm, err, well...OK.). The following five nights I mostly danced, but also called from one to three dances each evening. Besides jamming, I started learning some more tunes. Karen and I put on a waltz dance workshop. I borrowed a banjo uke to take a uke workshop. A friend brought two kayaks and we floated a few miles of the Skokumchuck. My brother who lives in Olympia visited. Karen visited her mother in Shelton Tues to Friday. The weather was quite nice, although quite chilly some nights (low of 41.6°F). The deadline for submissions is the 24th of the prior month. Please submit articles by email to [email protected] If you have to mail your article by US Post Office, then allow at least two business days for mail delivery to: Richard and Karen Rubicam 2539 9th St. Baker City, OR 97814 541-523-3721 or 541-406-0440.

So many tunes and so little time!

Editor’s In Box 8/3 - Nancy Trump attended the Fiddle Tunes Workshop Friday afternoon for the recital, and to say goodbye to Peter Donovan, who is retiring from the director's position. He has done a great job these last years organizing and leading the workshop. We will miss his expertise and experience. He has passed the wand to Carla Arnold who is an experienced music teacher and has the feel for what the workshop is intended to accomplish. The recital was great. As Richard Rubicam says, "So many tunes and so little time!" And so it has proved to be. Some new innovations turned out very entertaining to the audience and to the participants as well. I especially liked the addition of the singing and music combined. Amazing the voices some of these people have. Kodria Haddock was a new instructor with an intermedi-ate group and did a great job. Congratulations, Kodria. Looking forward to next year already. Nancy Trump ______________________________________________ 8/15 - I attended the Elgin Fiddlers' Show at the Fire Hall on the 13th of August with a friend of 35 years. There was a small, but appreciative crowd, and a good lineup of musicians. Had quite a few dancers on the floor as well. It did get a mite warm in the building as they didn't open the big doors this time as they have done before, but it didn't dim the enjoyment of the music one bit. Got to see quite a few folks I haven't seen for a while, both from Elgin where I lived for 24 years, and those from further away. Enjoyed what I had time for because I had to leave early to get home before dark. Coming down off the Minam Grade where they are working on part of the road is a little scary right now and I did want to get past that at least because there is not much left holding the road up and it's a long way down. If I hadn't been in a hurry I would have appreciated the gorgeous sunset a bit more. Thanks to all the folks who made the show a success. It is always good to hear good fiddle music and songs. I miss getting around to more of the shows. Nancy Trump

The following is an excerpt from http://blueridgerambler.com/mountain-music/ Old-time music is dance music. Whenever the community would get together for a barn raising or corn shucking and the work was done, the fiddles would come out, the floor would be cleared, and the dancing would start. Jigs and reels from Ireland soon became Americanized; the Virginia Reel is based on an Irish dance. If there was more than one fiddler, the songs would be played in unison (both fiddles playing the same notes at the same time) in the Irish tradition. In Ireland, fiddles, flutes, tin whistles, or pipes would play in unison, combining songs end-to-end to keep the dancing going.
