The new arrival at Swains Farm Shop in May caused plenty of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ when we posted pictures on our website (www.bn5magazine.co.uk) and Facebook sites. Gorgeous George the very royal foal from Swains just had to be our cover model this month, especially as Swains is celebrating their 30th year this month. Don’t miss their Fun Day on Saturday 14 June, see our article on page 26 for more details.

It’s also the very popular Gardens and Arts week-end this month, this quintessential Henfield event has become incredibly popular and is a great way for the village to show off it’s wonderful gardens, arts and music. Don’t miss this lovely (hopefully sunny) weekend on 14th & 15th June.

As you know, we are great supporters of HART (Henfield Area Response Team). They started around the same time as BN5 magazine and a feature on them was one of our very first articles. We’ve watched them grow in numbers and in knowledge and reputation as one of the finest responder teams in the country, much admired and imitated. Some of the team are climbing three mountains in 24 hours as part of their Three Peaks Challenge, please read more on page 22 and give them your support.

HENFIELD VILLAGE EVENING BRINGS OUT THE CROWDSOver 60 Henfield clubs and groups had stands at the Village Evening on Friday 9 May and local residents enjoyed membership offers and found out about the huge amount of clubs and groups in the area. Local MP Nick Herbert visited and met Parish Councillors and representatives of groups and charities. Local nursery schools, Henfield Gardens and Arts, the WI, Henfield Joggers, Churches, Scouts, Guides, the Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men, HART, amongst lots of others, had stands and displays showing what they get up to. Local protest group LAMBs (Locals against Mayfield Building Sprawl) were showing

Henfield people the potential impact of the Mayfield development and photographs of an osprey spotted on the site of the planned 10,000 home development. The Clarks Mead Trust (trustees of the Scout Hut and land) were explaining their exciting plans for a new Scout Hut in the village. At the BN5 magazine stand we enjoyed meeting local people and hearing your very positive comments about the magazine. We were pleased to make contact with some new groups and make plans for some new editorial features on their groups. MBE FOR PAULPaul Dedman was awarded an MBE in the 2014 New Year’s Honours List for ‘ser-vices to St John Ambulance and to the community in Steyning West Sussex’. He has been a volunteer with St John Ambulance Sussex since 1984. He recently re-tired as Commander and now helps with Human Re-sources and Discipline. The Investiture was at Buck-ingham Palace on Thursday 1 May. The Queen was represented by Princess Anne the Princess Royal and the ceremony was held in the Throne Room. The Queen has also agreed to Paul being awarded ‘Of-ficer of the Order of St John’ which will be presented to him at another ceremony later in the year at the Church of St John in Clarkenwell.Paul is currently President of Henfield and District Li-ons Club and he has been a Lion since 1980. He has been a member of three Lions Clubs over the past 34 years and is also a District Officer for the South East of England.Daphne Dedman

a cup of tea in an unusual place. Then to show that Brownies have fun, one Tuesday evening we did the Conga around the high street and every aisle of Budgens, finishing off by dancing around Redoaks and entertaining the residents with some traditional Brownie songs. One resident got an extra surprise when we all sang Happy Birthday to him. To finish off the badge we swung from the trees in May when we went to Go Ape! If you would like to come and join us to help provide these opportunities for the Brown-ies then we would love to hear from you as we are desperate for some more help as both our Tawny Owl and Barn Owl have retired in the past few months. RNLI HENFIELD BRANCH APRIL ART EXHIBITION Thank you everybody who supported our 25th Annual Art Exhibition in the Henfield Hall, whether by buying a piece of original artwork or spending time admiring the work on show. We were pleased with the success of the event. We still have a few bills outstanding, but it appears that we raised close to £500. In addition, we raised the profile of the RNLI in a very positive way. The quality of the work on display was, again, of an incredibly high standard and it was very satisfying to hear the many complimentary comments made the visitors. Our next fundraiser will be the RNLI Flag Day in Henfield and Steyning on Saturday 27 September. PROMS IN THE PARKHenfield’s annual ‘Proms in the Park’ concert will take place in the gardens of Red Oaks at 6pm on Sunday 29 June. Brass Fusion and local opera star Sidonie Winter will again be performing a varied programme with something for everyone, and Red Oaks will be running their legendary Pimms tent.The first half of the concert will feature brass band fa-vourites and songs from the shows. The second half is a traditional ‘Last Night of the Proms’; a chance to wave your flags and sing fervently, and includes Je-rusalem, Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory, and Sussex by the Sea. HENFIELD VOICESSinging is good for you! As well as sounding beau-tiful it expands the lungs and frees you from stress. OK, you think you can’t sing. Nonsense, everyone can sing, and with even more joy when done in the company of like-minded people. There’s something about singing in a choir that gives us a great sense of belonging, something that Henfield Voices (formerly Henfield Singing Circle) has been demonstrating tunefully for the past four years.The group meets at Henfield Hall each Wednesday from 7.30-9pm to enjoy an evening of laughter, fun and singing. New members are always welcome, par-ticularly male voices to enhance the range of parts that can be sung. There is no audition. A DAZZLING FUNDRAISER IN MEMORY OF A BEAUTIFUL AND MUCH LOVED YOUNG LADYFriends and family of Martine Barthram, who tragi-cally lost her life to breast cancer at the age of 35 last year, are holding a Memorial Fundraiser at South

Lodge Hotel on 4 July. This glittering event in Mar-tine’s memory will be as glamorous as Martine was, with a dress code of jewel colours and evening dress, an incredible auction of high value treats, great music and a wonderful three course din-ner cooked by the resident Masterchef. This stylish event will raise money to refurbish the cancer treatment areas and waiting rooms at Worthing Hospital, to make life a little easier for

£50,000 FUNDING FOR HENFIELD TENNIS CLUBHenfield Tennis Club has secured Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund. The Club will receive £50,000 of National Lot-tery funding to replace its current pavilion with a new building with greatly improved facilities including the provision of changing and toilet facilities. This award will be supplemented by funds that the Club has been prudently setting aside ever since the need for a new pavilion was agreed several years ago.The Club is proud of its Youth Programme and flour-ishing relationship with St Peter’s Primary School; the new pavilion will be a tremendous boost to the Club’s junior coaching function. Club Chairman, Digby Stephenson, said: “We are de-lighted to have secured this investment, which means we can upgrade our premises to match the quality of our courts and coaching programme. RACE NIGHT RAISES FUNDS FOR ST PETER’S SCHOOLHenfield Lions raised more than £1,000 with a race night at St Peter’s School last month with half the money going towards new equipment for the school and the rest to charity. The school money will go to-wards a new interactive electronic whiteboard for pu-pils. Richard Lucy, chairman of the school PTA, said: “This was a fabulous fund-raising evening with tre-mendous support from the community. The Lions do a brilliant job.” Henfield Lions organiser David Pryor said: “We were delighted to support this very worth-while project for the school. Charities will also benefit and we have to thank everyone who made the event such a great success.” Around 100 people attended the event, which involves backing horses shown rac-ing on a big screen. HENFIELD U15S NARROWLY LOSE…TO THEIR DADS The now annual Henfield Fc U15s Dad v lads 11-a-side football match produced a wonderful game on Good Friday. As plucky 14 year olds last year the lads had (much as expected) been well beaten. But with everyone a year older (and that extra year being no

advantage for some of the Dads!) this was a much closer contest.The Dads soon got a grip on midfield and ten minutes of pressure finally produced a tap-in for Tim Franks af-ter Ollie Barrott did well to block a fierce shot by Neil Butler. Tim grabbed a second soon after, but the lads were gradually getting to grips with the opposition largely by working out who could and who couldn’t run amongst their Dads. Half time Dads 2 Lads 0The second half began with a third goal for the Dads via Gavin Hills who was guesting for the Dads on ac-count of his being the u15s regular linesman. Ben Ward wriggled through with dazzling skills and a bril-liant run down the middle and it took a fantastic save from the Dads reserve keeper Dick Hill to keep him out.Next it was Isaac Swaby’s turn for a chance and this time there was no mistake as he finished sweetly for 3 –1. All the play was now in the Dads half and Ward broke free down the left bearing down on goal. Rather than shoot he crossed for Swaby to bundle in number two amidst loud shouts for offside from some increas-ingly desperate Dads. Final score: Dads 3, Lads 2. With huge thanks to Simon Brown who refereed in exemplary fashion and Henfield Cricket Club who lent their facilities for the post match social. HENFIELD PARISH COUNCILAt its recent annual general meeting Henfield Par-ish Council re-elected Ray Osgood as Chairman of Council for a further year. Mike Morgan was re-elect-ed Vice Chairman. This will be the last year of the cur-rent Council with election for a new council being held in May 2015. If you are considering putting yourself forward for election to Council you are reminded that all Council meetings, which are held in The Henfield Hall are open to the public. Full Council meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month commencing at 7pm and you are encouraged and most welcome to attend and observe what is involved being a parish councillor.Henfield Parish Council has now entered into an agreement with West Sussex County Council to un-dertake a variety of highway related functions includ-ing repairing potholes on roads and pavements within the village, cutting back vegetation which is obstruct-ing the clear view of motorists, cleaning highway signs, removing unauthorised advertising boards and clearing leaves from blocked gullies. The agreement, whilst it is initially for a trial 12 month period, is hoped will become a permanent arrangement.

PUBLIC MEETING - MAYFIELD MARKET TOWN PROPOSALS Mid Sussex MP, Nicholas Soames, and South Downs MP, Nick Herbert are to be keynote speak-ers at the event (time to be confirmed) on 20 June at Pauls Catholic College in Burgess Hill. Both MPs are strongly opposed to the scheme and have been actively supporting the campaign against a new town. They will be joined by speakers from the CPRE (Cam-paign to Protect Rural England) and Anthony Watts Williams from LAMBS (Locals Against Mayfield Build-ing Sprawl).Mayfield Market Towns has been promoting this area for development since last year when it published maps of its proposals on its website. The maps show three ‘options’ – ‘Option 1’ is a huge settlement cen-tred at Wineham; ‘Option 2’ is two settlements at Wineham and Albourne and ‘Option 3’ is five smaller settlements with the main centre at Sayers Com-mon and four more around Wineham, Shermanbury, Blackstone, and Albourne. The scheme is not in any of the local plans for Mid Sussex or Horsham Dis-tricts. However, the London-based company has re-cently announced that it is “embarking on the formal planning application process.” This proposal has far-reaching implications for the whole area. HENFIELD U14S AT THE DOUBLE Henfield U14s have completed an amazing double after being crowned Mid Sussex League Champi-ons a few weeks after winning the League Cup. An incredible season has seen them win 25 out of 26 games in the league and cup and score a superb 190 goals while conceding just five. The achieve-ments of the team are even more remarkable con-

sidering they only had a squad of 13 players.

The cup final against Ifield Youth was a tense hard fought affair played at Three Bridges FC where Hen-field ran out 4-1 winners with goals from Connor Angood, Joe Clarke, Harry Neale and Harvey Barrie. Manager, Donna Angood said “This team is some-thing special and they play as a unit that has proved unstoppable this season. Every player in the team contributed to this season’s success and we now have players contacting us looking to join”. Coach Darren Angood added “The work rate, belief and desire of this squad has seen them train hard and play hard and they deserve all the plaudits afforded to them. They have added the league and the cup to the four tournament titles won last season and they really are a force to be reckoned with.”Daren Angood

DON’T MISS HENFIELD FESTIVAL OF GARDENS AND ARTSThe festival is the weekend of the 14-15 June from 11am until 5pm each day. This year there are 27 ven-ues open, most on both days and entrance is free. However, the festival always supports a local charity which this year is the appeal to rebuild the local scout hut. Donations boxes will be found at some venues, so please do support this worthy cause.

On display will be art, home crafts, local wood craft and the ever-popular display of models at Maid-ment Court. Music is always a big part of the festival and there will be events in a number of venues includ-ing bands, singing and Morris dancing by the Chanc-tonbury Ring Morris Men. The Henfield Club will be hosting an art exhibition featuring local artists. A festi-val such as this would not be complete without suste-nance and many gardens and other venues, including

pubs and cafes, will be serving lunches or teas with home-made cakes. The festival traditionally ends on the Sunday in the lovely grounds of Red Oaks where you can enjoy a glass or two of Pimms while listening to music from 5pm.All venues are easily walkable from car parks in the vil-lage centre and well signed with iconic blue signs and balloons. To find you way around a blue fold-out guide will be available from May which gives details of all the venues, times of events and a useful easy-to-read map. BUSY BEES NEWSBusy Bees Playgroup would like to thank all who sup-ported our Jumble Sale on 26 April, helping us to raise £582.38 for Playgroup funds. Apologies to those who tried use the contact number given – the Committee member whose number it was moved just before Eas-ter and BT didn’t transfer the number for the crucial fortnight before the Jumble! We have started to pro-vide hot meals on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s and our children are enjoying a varied menu full of goodness.

Some of this has been through our donations to people who are themselves in need of seed money to launch a bigger fundraising undertak-ing or project that will assist to others. Those we have helped include: Senior Citizens outing (£3343); Girl Guides HQ Trust (£800); 2nd Henfield Guides (£700); Scout Badges (£469); Arun Cubs Pack (£250); Chari-table help overseas via a Guide (£250); RBL Poppy Appeal (£150); and 3rd Henfield Brownies (£60).We have also been able to provide physical help when needed. For these we may use of our own assets or those loaned to us. Examples of these in-cluded: helping at major calendar events such as Lent, Christmas, and Fairs within the village. At these our members help raise and take down the Cross or Christmas Tree outside Barclays Bank; erect and take down Party Tents at Scout and Guides camps or for school fairs. Many of you are aware of our Senior Citizens day out with tea, lunch and entertainment. It

The Choir has also performed concerts in Wales, France, Sweden and in many venues including Arundel Ca-thedral, the Sussex County Cricket Ground, and the Royal Albert Hall. HELP FOR HEROESI am the local independent fundraiser for the charity Help for Heroes who look after our wounded Service-men and Women. Last year I managed to get a poster for the Armed Forces Weekend (last in June) in 80% of shops in Steyning High Street. I was also there per-sonally during the weekend and managed to collect over £1,000 for the charity. This year I will be doing similar on the 28-29 June and hope to raise more. I will be 85 shortly after the event and intend to retire on 31 December after five years collecting for them. I will continue placing collecting tins in the neighbourhood and servicing them. A LADY. A DRESS: MISS VERA OWEN 1921-1997Previously, I wrote about how Henfield Museum has a ballgown that belonged to a Miss Owen. Why a ballgown? How did it get there? Miss Owen retired to Henfield in 1977 after a high powered career in London. From a heartfelt obituary in the Parish Maga-zine, I learnt that she was good company and how important her faith was to her. She was a regular at-tendee at St Peters and remained a communicant when housebound. As secretary of the Conservative Association she is remembered for her desire to see women equally represented at all levels. The West Sussex branch of the Royal Over- Seas League also benefited from her talents. ROSL is an organization

She told me that every Saturday night at ROSL, there was a social evening. And Miss Owen was on the dance commit-tee. Perhaps that’s the ‘Why’? The ‘How’ is more poignant. She was a very organised lady. When she was ill, she made sure that her affairs were in order. A posthumous entry in the Parish Magazine sends her thanks to friends and medical staff for their support in her last days. So donating a dress to the Museum would seem to be typical of her desire to leave things ‘just so’. My grateful thanks to all who helped me with their memories.Stephanie Richards

HENFIELD THERAPIST TAKES OVER TRAINING SCHOOL Two former students at The Wilbury School of Mas-sage and Reflexology in Dyke Road, Brighton, have taken over the running of the 30-year-old business. Elizabeth Ross-Talbot of Henfield and Lorraine Pride-aux of Chichester started their training at the school seven years ago and continued as trainers after quali-fying. Eight trainers, who are all practising therapists, are based in the Dyke Road Natural Health Clinic and Studio. “We are very proud to be continuing the work of training complementary therapists,” said Elizabeth. “The benefits and effects of relaxation, massage and reflexology have been shown to help physical, mental

SEAGULLS OVER HORSHAM – NWSS SPRING MEETINGHorsham based Brighton & Hove Albion supporters club North West Sussex Seagulls held their spring meeting at the Holbrook Club in Horsham on Tuesday 22 April. A packed meeting listened to a very interest-ing presentation by Albion in the Community CEO Mi-chael Edwards on the work that AITC does in the Hor-sham and Sussex areas, this was then followed by a lively Q&A session with Albion first team players Craig Mackail-Smith and Inigo Calderon. The players were in friendly, humorous and relaxed mood and showed why they are such firm favourites with the fans and such good ambassadors for the football club. Both players answered the many questions thrown at them and stayed behind for the obligatory photo and auto-graph signing session at the end of the meeting.NWSS secretary Mike Wilson said after the meeting that the supporters club members always appreciates the way the club makes players and other Albion staff available for its meetings. “It really does help to ce-ment the relationship between the football club and its fans. The work that AITC does in the Sussex area doesn’t go unnoticed either and we are pleased that we were able, in a small way, to give some exposure to the good work that it does”.NWSS currently runs three coaches to the Amex Stadium for all Albion home games including from Cowfold and Henfield. It takes a certain type of person to be a First Responder, someone with dedication, determina-tion and a kindness towards their fellow man. The

Henfield First Responders (HART, Henfield Area Response Team) are a very lovely bunch of volunteers who spend a lot of their spare time ‘on call’ and ready to respond as quickly as possible, before the ambulance arrives on the scene of a local emergency.They don’t receive any public funding, (aside from some SECAmb training) so the cost of providing defi-brillators and other emergency equipment falls at the feet of local fundraisers and supporters. The fundrais-ing is ongoing, defibs need replacing every few years and there is a drive by the group to populate the area with as many PADs (Public Access Defibrillators) as possible, especially in more rural parts. They would love to offer a 24/7 cover to the area and need more volunteers to help reach this goal. They work closely with PART (Partridge Green Response Team) and swap ‘patches’ when the areas are not covered, so if you live in Henfield you could find Heather Kingdon (one of the PART team walking the challenge) or one of her colleagues attending an emergency.The team are always up for a challenge, so when one of the responders (mentioning no names, Sandra Par-sons…) suggested climbing Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis mountains in the space of 24 hours to raise money and awareness for HART, several en-thusiastic members of the group raised their hands in support. As with many good plans, this one was hatched in the pub. It immediately gained the support of two local sponsors, Sean Preston from South Down Truck and Crane and Gyles Culver, landlord of the White Hart. Griffith Smith Farrington Webb, a firm of local solicitors where Anne Dewdney works, stepped up with even more sponsorship, as they always do where HART are concerned.

So now there are eight intrepid climbers, under the guidance of local businessman and all-round fitness guru Mark Skilton. (Incidentally, Mark got the fund-raising ‘ball rolling’ by donating £200 from his local business DSA products, but don’t tell him we told you). The climbers; Claire Greenfield, Mark Skilton, Kas Fletcher, Heather Kingdon, Sandra Parsons, Martin Tooth, Josh Westlake and Anne Dewdney have been training hard in all weathers, fuelled by Sandra’s singing and pockets full of energy giving ‘Percy Pigs’. Their stomping ground has been the steep bits of the South Downs, as well as one very grueling trip to Snowdonia to really test their climbing skills. Martin Tooth said; “We’ve been asked lots of times why we’re doing this, and my answer would be to primarily raise awareness of what HART does. Some people still don’t know about us, or how crucial the first 4 minutes are in saving a person’s life after a heart attack. Local knowledge of defibrillator loca-tions and the basics in resuscitation really will save lives. Of course, we also need to fill some tins to keep us on the road so all kind donations will be gratefully received.”Dave Fletcher, paramedic and founder member of HART is part of the support team, along with John Ro-drigues. Their role is to drive the climbers between the mountains, provide food and generally boost morale. “At the moment HART are taking around 20 call-outs a month. These can range from giving reassurance to an elderly person who has fallen to a life-saving re-suscitation. We save the ambulance team critical time and can help to stabilize and reassure the patient as well as get vital information. None of this would be possible without the overwhelming support of local people and the businesses that sponsor us. We are continually grateful.”

I spoke with the sponsors of the event, local businesses who are helping to ‘make it happen’. Sean Preston and his mum Margaret are Henfielders who are very support-ive of local charities including the Youth Club and Henfield Football Club. This year South Downs Truck & Crane (who employ around 20 lo-cal people) have chosen HART as the recipients of their donations. “HART have responded to us at work in the past so we know exactly what a dif-ference they make,” said Sean. “This is something we can do to help them and show our gratitude.”Gyles Culver from the White Hart is a well-known supporter of HART; the fortnightly fundraising quizzes for the charity are incredibly popular and well supported. Swains Farm Shop has been at the heart of Henfield village life for 30 years this month – how time flies! Mick Hills originally opened a one room shop

on the Brighton Road in 1984 as a way of selling the produce grown on the family farm direct to the public. He never dreamed it would grow into such a successful business.

Over the years the shop has steadily expanded and flourished and it is now almost unrecognisable to those early days. As well as offering a wide variety of fresh seasonal salad, fruit and vegetables they now also sell a fantastic range of locally produced cheeses, eggs, meats, dairy products, jams, chutneys and cake. For those of you in a bit of a rush they sell quality ready meals and soups, not to mention juices,

cordials, ice cream, biscuits, bread and chocolate. The animals are a huge draw for young children and the lovely walk through the woods or over the com-mon to see them is a wonderful outing for young families. The most recent addition to the Swains ani-mal family is the incredibly cute baby Shetland pony, George (who is featured on our cover this month). But there are also alpacas, donkeys (including Romero who is apparently rather a drama queen!), goats, pigs, ducks, chickens and geese. Children love being able to get up close to the animals and Swains are more for the children to take a carrot from the shop to feed them (although this is such a popular activity they are limited to one – they don’t want the animals to get too fat!)Swains is very much a family business. Mick’s chil-dren Nina, Shelley and Paul have all grown up with the

shop and they are all very much involved of the run-ning of it on a day to day basis. Even the staff seem to become ‘one of the family’, often starting as a Sat-urday job they then return to work vacations if they go away to study, and some even start work full time from school. But what is really special about Swains is that it is support for our local community. Not only do they source as much of their produce as they can locally, but they also support local charities and host visits from local playgroups and the primary school. “We love being a part of the village life” explained Nina, “and we are incredibly grateful to all our loyal customers who have supported us over the years. Hundreds of women will be making Saturday 21 June a ‘Night to Remember’ when they join St Barnabas House for Worthing’s annual midnight

walk. There is now less than two weeks left to register for Night to Remember, the ladies-only midnight walk in aid of St Barnabas House, the adult’s hospice for Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield. Registration is now open at www.nighttoremember.org.uk until 9 June 2014. Over the past six years, over 5,000 ladies have walked the streets and seafront of Worthing and have raised over £900,000 for St Barnabas House. In 2013, Night to Remember raised an incredible £121,306 for St Barnabas House which funded all of the care pro-vided by our Hospice at Home team for two months.This year we hope to raise even more vital funds, so that we can meet the incredible demand for our Hos-pice at Home service, which from April 2014 will be extending through the night to provide care 24 hours a day. Whether a patient is in need of pain manage-ment, or their relative is in need of support, we want to be there for them in their time of need. This expansion will cost an additional £90,000 on top of the existing service running costs, but will help so many local peo-ple in their own homes. Please help us to help them.We have introduced a brand new challenge for 2014 with a 20 mile route, so ladies can now choose to walk 7, 13.1 or 20 miles through the night! The walk will start at Worthing Leisure Centre and registration is £20 per person, which includes a ‘Night Pack’ (our exclusive pink Night to Remember t-shirt, torch and medal), fundraising pack and refreshments en route. Registration closes on 9 June and you cannot register on the night – so get the girls together now and regis-ter to be one of our brightest stars!Men can get involved too! We are looking for over 150 volunteers to help us make Saturday 21 June a Night to Remember - whether registering our lovely

ladies in, marshalling the route or serving up breakfast for our fantastic walkers as they arrive back. She soon put down roots with a small salon behind Henfield Post Office, and eight years ago moved to her current location behind Hamfelds Home and Gardens. The salon has three nail stations in the main room and two serene treatment rooms, recently redecorated in gentle greys and pinks with new professional white furniture and fittings. Since starting her successful business she’s also found time to get married to Anthony and they now have the very gorgeous Daniel, coming up two and keeping everyone on their toes!

Natasha has a team of three girls and one ‘Saturday’ girl. Claire has worked at the salon for three years and was married last year. She loves creating Beautiful Brows – a skill

that demands precision and concentration. Chantelle is a mum to two who works part-time, she loves to give relaxing facials and massage. Lucy,

the newest member of the team, has studied holistic therapies and is passionate about the salon’s natural products.

I sometimes receive calls from distressed parents, enquiring about counselling for their teenage son or daughter who is having problems of some kind.Most often these calls for help are triggered by some recent crisis or disclosure in the child’s life that has come as a shock. Whatever the issue, whether related to school, drugs & alcohol, sexual behaviour, self-harm, bullying … the potential list is endless but the common factor is that the parents are beside themselves with worry and anxiety for their child.

Most of all remind yourself that although it can feel like it, this really is unlikely to be the end of the world, you aren’t the only family experiencing these problems and with help and support you will come through it and out the other side. BACK IN THE SUMMER OF 2013 BARCHESTER HEALTHCARE ANNOUNCED A NEW PROMOTION COMPETITION ENTITLED ‘THE BIG APPLE’ FOR THEIR HOMES. THE

COMPETITION WAS BASED ON THE OCCUPATION LEVELS WITHIN ALL THE BARCHESTER HOMES.

No one at Red Oaks really ever thought about it after that. In October Jacky Welch

our General Manager received a telephone call from head office who announced that Red Oaks had won

the competition.Now Jacky had a big decision to make;

who would be going on a Luxury 6 day trip to New York. In the end Jacky decided to hold a ballot

with one vote for everyone who worked at Red Oaks. The ballot took place over a 4 week period to ensure that virtually everyone

could place their vote. Eventually the ballot box was opened and the votes counted. The result was for Martin & Marilyn Knight, Jacky Welch and Sharon Haigh. It was decided that we would travel at the end of April 2014. The

itinerary was prepared with departure on 25th April returning on the 30th April. The journey started with a flight on Virgin Atlantic in their Premium Class with VIP Airport Lounge access. We arrived at Newark Airport to be met by a massive stretched Limousine to take us to the 5 star Conrad Hotel where two suites had been booked. That night we were booked on the New York Dinner Cruise where we had a lovely meal whilst having a fantastic tour of the New York skyline up the Hudson river and out to Staton Island for a great view of the Statue of Liberty.

The next day we were booked onto a Big Apple Helicopter tour over the City. This is definitely the way to see New York, truly breathtaking.

We then all went to Ground Zero which was very thought provoking because you get to see how huge a tragedy it really was. That night we were met by an even bigger stretched Limousine and taken to the Ambassador Theatre to see the show, Chicago, with front row seats. After the show we were met by the same vehicle and taken back to our hotel. Next day we made our way to Central Park for a Horse and Carriage ride through Central Park which was very interesting and very relaxing. That evening we made our way to 11 Madison Park, a 3 Michelin Star Restaurant, which this week, has been voted the 4th best restaurant on the planet. Wow is all we can say. Sixteen courses of mind blowing food! Every meal that we all have for the rest of our lives will truly be a disappointment. The following day we had VIP tickets to miss all the queues at the Empire State Building with some of the best views in the world. The rest of the day and the following day were spent shopping and travelling on the open top tour buses. Finally returning to Newark in another limousine. We all agreed that we had all had a fantastic time in the city that never sleeps. We left England as work colleagues and returned as true friends.

Local contemporary portrait painter Claire Phillips is not afraid to tackle difficult subjects as her latest exhibition at Horsham Museum and Art

Gallery testifies. ‘Reclaiming childhood - face to face with child labour in India’ is a collection of portraits of children who have been rescued from a life of slavery and forced labour in India. The images are beauti-ful but the stories behind them are both shocking and emotional.Back in 2009 Claire came across an article in the Sun-day Times about child trafficking and slavery in India. The article had a profound effect on her and so she made contact with the journalist who in turn put her in contact with the Indian charity Bachpan Bachao An-dolan (BBA). “After hearing many arguments justifying the use of child labour in India, I was particularly keen to get the perspective of an organisation closely in-volved with the issue on a daily basis” she explained. Claire first visited the BBA charity in October 2011 and then she returned a year later. On both occasions she interviewed, sketched and photographed rescued children as young as nine years old. “I first visited the safe home where children are taken to immediately following their rescue. The children were understand-ably very quiet, wary and just stared at me. I then went to visit a rehabilitation centre in Rajasthan and the dif-ference was amazing: the children were relaxed, noisy and boisterous – it made me realise just what a huge difference the charity makes in their lives.” Claire also led a couple of painting workshops with some res-cued children and some of their drawings are also featured in the exhibition. Claire went on to describe how parents in poverty are tricked into giving up their children: “Child traf-fickers visit impoverished families and promise to give their child an education and access to a better life. Instead they are sold into slavery and end up working

in appalling conditions in a range of industries includ-ing mining, brick works, clothing factories and even domestic work. The children almost never see their families again.” This is where BBA is working to make a difference. Set up in 1980 by the Indian children’s rights activist Kailash Satyarthi, the charity is at the forefront of the fight against slavery, forced labour and bonded labour through direct intervention. To date the charity has rescued over 82,800 children. In the short term BBA provides the children with food, clothing, shelter, medical aid, psychological and legal assis-tance, and non-formal education. In the longer term they try to return the children to their parents or if that is not possible, provide them with long term rehabili-tation and education.Although passionate about human rights issues, Claire does not see herself as a campaigner. “I want to encourage people to think about the issues I care about and I hope that when they see my portraits they connect with them and the story behind them. Today there are around 60 million children in India under the age of 14 who are working for little or no wages rather than being educated. It’s all about money and we need Western buying power to get involved.”Each of the children represented in the 12 large scale and eight smaller scale paintings in the exhibition have been rescued from the most appalling working conditions. The images show them as mischievous, innocent and vulnerable - children in the process of reclaiming their childhood. The pictures are accompa-nied by the stories of the children’s experiences and a sound track. Claire will be donating the profits from the sale of prints and paintings through this exhibition to the BBA charity. The exhibition is on at the Hor-sham Museum and Art Gallery until 5 July 2014, after which it will move to the Oxo Tower in London.Sarah Butler

“Our first visit was to Mukti Ashram – a safe centre where the rescued children are taken for immedi-ate rehabilitation, food, reassurance and counsel-ling. Around 80 small boys were staying there, sitting quietly, close to one another, staring at us through enormous dark wary eyes.Little Waseem was the first to break the ice – small-er than most but just a little bit more confident. Claiming to be 12 but looking much younger, he told us how he had been stitching leather purses and wallets. He lived, slept and ate in the factory, working from 10 in the morning until 9 at night and received no money for his labour.As Waseem talked the other boys edged forward, staring suspiciously, all unnaturally quiet and still, solemn and obedient. Finally they began to share their stories - their sad brown eyes close to tears as they talked of the conditions they’d left and how much they missed their parents and home. Most had been brought by the traffickers; a few had escaped violent fathers or bankruptcy after family illness.They worked making hair combs, shoes, brace-lets, sorting plastics or garbage. Many told tales of beatings, showed bruises and scars. One 9 year old boy described how he was beaten with an electric cable if he fell asleep at work, if he cried he would be beaten more so he learned not to cry. When he was being beaten, he came to the conclusion that he was born to be beaten. He was poor and that’s what happens to poor people.”

Pensions are rubbish...Keeping the

pension theme from my last

editorial, the above is a phrase I hear far too often. The truth is an abandoned, ignored and unloved pension will most likely evolve into something rubbish over time. When I meet with a client

for the first time one of the things I do is collate the information they have about all their various savings, protection and investment policies. When I come to ask about any pension policies they have I am often told they have a couple of frozen personal pensions from a few years back “but not to worry about them”. This always surprises me as it is not uncommon for these frozen pensions to have tens of thousands of pounds in and yet they are not interested in them.The pension is not really frozen anyway, you may not be able to spend the money immediately and you may not be paying into it anymore, but the money is still invested, so can fall and rise in value and the pension provider is still taking their charges. Many people are put off monitoring and managing their pensions purely as they feel they do not fully understand pensions and how they work. In actual fact, a pension does not differ from any other type of investment except for the favourable tax advantages of pensions and the rules around its accessibility. Despite this, it often seems that if a client has a share portfolio they will monitor it very regularly and can be emotionally affected by any gains or losses made. However they may have “an old

pension”, which could even have a higher value than their shares, which they disregard as a ‘tiny’ pension and do not monitor its performance or make any changes to its investments.Pension contracts have changed a lot in recent years, with charges falling and investment options widening. There may be good reasons for leaving your pension with your existing provider, such as a high Guaranteed Annuity Rate (GAR) or heavy exit penalties, but if you do not at least look at it, how can you possibly know? The differences in terms of what you can receive from a well nurtured pension can be tens of thousands, so whilst carrying out your spring cleaning, why not dust off your old pensions and bring them back to life? Zero hours contracts

Due to alleged misuse by some employers, zero hours contracts

recently became one of the hottest topics in the press. As a result, the Department

for Business, Innovation and Skills has started a consul-tation with businesses on the problems identified with their use. There is currently no legal definition of what consti-tutes a zero hours contract. Essentially it is defined by the fact that there is no set number of hours guar-anteed for the individual. This type of contract was originally used by organisations to enable a more flexible workforce to be engaged on an ‘as and when required’ basis to allow for peaks and troughs in work. The reality is that this type of contract can differ from one entity to the next, depending on what is included. For instance, in some cases, individuals are obligated to accept work offered, in others they are not. In some cases, zero hours contracts restrict individuals from working for other employers, even when they are not supplied with any work. The important question though that employers need to consider when using zero hours contracts is that of employment status. Employers can deploy an in-dividual on a zero hours contract to be either an em-ployee or a ‘worker’. Because workers share some characteristics of being employed and some of being self-employed, it is not always clear from a contract whether a person is an employee or a ‘worker’.If someone does casual or irregular work for a busi-ness and most of the statements below apply to them, it is likely they are a worker:• they occasionally do work for a specific busi-

ness;• the business does not have to offer them work

and they do not have to accept it;• their contract with the business uses terms like

‘casual’, ‘zero hours’, ‘as required’ or similar;• they had to agree with the business’s terms and

conditions to secure work (either verbally or in writing);

• they are under the supervision or control of a manager or director;

• they cannot send someone else to do their work;• the business deducts tax and National Insur-

ance contributions from their wages; and• the business provides materials, tools or equip-

ment they need to do the work.Used in the right way, a carefully worded ‘worker’ agreement can provide an employer with greater po-tential flexibility and cost savings, as a worker will not usually be entitled to certain employment rights such as minimum notice periods if their employment ends

If you are using zero hour contracts in any form, do be careful to avoid ac-tions which may make your worker an employee. If a worker starts to work a regular pattern or is just added to your rota each week/month there is a high risk of them quickly becoming a permanent employee, de-spite what is written in their contract. This can cre-ate a high risk of an unfair dismissal claim and come as quite a shock to an unsuspecting employer who simply decided not to offer the individual any further shifts.
