April issue of BN5 is full of food and fun. We’ve got an article on the scrumptious chocolate brownies created by artisan chef Sarah Westall from Partridge Green as well as a review of our ‘local’ the White Hart. As for the fun bit - Easter holidays are on the horizon so we have an article on local events and attractions to keep your children happy and busy during the Easter break.By the time you receive this copy of BN5 the fundraising challenge of the year will be well underway at Henfield Leisure Centre. Seven intrepid runners will be occupying seven treadmills for seven marathons in seven days... that’s a lot of sevens and I am guessing a few blisters too. Some of the treadmills will be run by teams, so there are many more than seven runners involved. This record-breaking attempt will be run for children with cancer, in particular one incredibly brave and special little boy called Ashton Hayne. Six year old Ashton is Sammy Bremner and Tracey Prescott’s nephew, they love him dearly and the way they have found to demonstrate their support for his tireless battle with cancer is to run for him, to raise money to help prevent more children like Ashton from having to battle themselves.The team, inspired by Ashton, aim to raise £21,000 for Clic Sargent, the childhood leukemia charity, and Henfield Leisure Centre. Do show them some big Henfield love by digging as deep as you can.

CantatriCe voiCesAround 60 ladies from Steyning and Horsham Canta-trice choir took part in the second Choiroke organised by the Bravo team and headed by the charismatic Kaytie Harding from Horsham. Eight choirs from Sus-sex and Surrey brought all their different styles of music to the Dorking Halls on 11 February including rock & pop, jazz, classical and contemporary. Canta-trice will be performing in London in April as part of the Brandenburg Choral Festival (see the Whats on section) and will also be performing at the Steyning Festival.Marie Curie CanCer Care goes the whole hog!The Marie Curie ‘Whole Hog’ event will take place on Sunday 13 May at Hind leap Warren Outdoor Edu-cational Centre, Forest Row. It’s a timed 10k cross-country run around the beautiful Ashdown Forest to-gether with an assault course. Participants can take part in teams of three or as individuals and must be prepared to get wet and muddy! It’s open to anyone aged 18 and participants can sign-up as a group or alone as a personal challenge. The team spirit, live music and hot food (as well as mud!) should create a great atmosphere on the day whilst raising money for the charity. Marie Curie Cancer Care provides free nursing to the terminally ill in the home and in hos-pices. Every £20 raised pays for an hour of nursing care. twelve ‘resCued’ froM henfield pubFire crews from Henfield, Partridge Green and Steyn-ing recently carried out the rescue of 12 people ‘trapped in a pub fire’ in Henfield High Street. Alarmed residents near The George were relieved to discover the incident was a West Sussex Fire Service exercise involving the three village stations. Volun-teer ‘victims’ (friends and family of fire crews) were ‘trapped’ on the first floor of the pub and were led to safety. The exercise is part of continual training and development for West Sussex Fire and Rescue teams.Mike Beardall

Crazy Cardboard box CaMpOn Saturday 25th February, eleven 2nd Hen-field Guides and their leaders gathered together to spend the night in the Guide hut. We had no blankets, no pillows and no mattresses. All we had were cardboard boxes. This was all to raise awareness about what it is like for the homeless children, especially The Railway Children Charity! Raising altogether around £200 we survived the cold night! The Railway Children Charity is an organisation, which help the home-less children in the UK and abroadIn the evening all the Guides made their own card-board houses from scratch, which we were to sleep in later. They were all very imaginative, and some even had chimneys, (even though they col-lapsed during the night!) We played lots of games related to the homeless and even made a fake campfire and sat around and sang the old campfire songs… “We all had a really great time despite the cold night and un-comfortable cardboard beds!” said the organisers who were doing this as part of their Baden Powell award. “We would definitely do it again!”Maisie Ross-Talbot, Imogen Scobie, Anna Mose-ley and Sofia Fowls-Konstantinidis.

We are now encour-aging all residents and businesses in West Sussex to register support for faster broadband by com-pleting a form online at www.westsussex-better-connected.org.uk . Registering your support does not commit you to sign-up to any new service. Communities that demonstrate the strongest sup-port are likely to be included in the earlier stages of the Broadband Improvement Programme.

henfield gardens and arts festival 16-17 June We are already up and running for the 2012 event. Our gardens are at this very minute being planted, weeded and comprehensively polished-up for the weekend. This year we have nearly 30 venues being prepared to give a warm welcome to many hundreds of visitors, as we show off our village through its many beautiful gardens. Over the last 12 years we have opened some impres-sive gardens and had some outstanding exhibitions of

A small band of volunteers precooked 400 pancakes then served the children as they came to school with a choice of yummy fillings. henfield’s diaMond Jubilee CelebrationsA very special oak tree was planted in the Tanyard on Saturday 25 February to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year. The young tree was grown by the Wood-land Trust from a Royal estate acorn (collected from either Windsor Great Park or Sandringham). Members of Henfield Commons Committee, Henfield Parish Council and Horsham District Council were in at-tendance. Andrew Sharp, chairman of the Commons Committee, said: “We can imagine that In 150 years’ time this tree will be a focal point and known as the Diamond Jubilee Tree.”Henfield will be marking the Diamond Jubilee in other ways as well. Plans are being made for a permanent wrought-iron hanging-basket post (suitably inscribed) for the village centre and Henfield Garden Club will plant a ‘Jubilee Garden’ near the Henfield Hall. Hen-field High Street will feature a red, white and blue planting scheme in the parish council planters. The Diamond Jubilee Holiday runs from Saturday 2 June to Tuesday 5 June with various events around Henfield. On the Sunday 3 June a ‘Last Night of the Proms’ eve-ning will be held at Red Oaks, featuring the band Brass Fusion and our very own Royal Opera star Sidonie Win-ter. service will be held in St Peter’s Church on Sunday 3 June at 3pm. In ‘The Iron Lady’ he plays a photographer and is also in a crowd scene as an MP. “Being there first-hand on set as an extra and seeing Meryl’s portrayal of Mag-gie, there was no doubt in my mind that she would be a hot favourite for a Bafta and Oscar” said Brian. He is also in two other films due out shortly: ‘360’, starring Anthony Hopkins, and ‘Now Is Good’, starring Dakota Fanning (partly filmed in Brighton).

tragedy sparks fundraiser for hart at the foxStaff and customers at The Fox, Small Dole, raised £200 for HART (Henfield Area Response Team) follow-ing the death of one of their regulars.Lynne Short of Wantley Hill, Henfield, died suddenly at her home, but was attended by HART responders after the 999 call was made. She was a close friend of Fox licensee Lyn Baldwin, whose mother Betty Corke has been attended twice by HART responders.Lyn, who has been at The Fox for nine years, handed over a cheque to HART members. She said: “HART

provides an essential service to our community in the Henfield area and, as well as my mother, I know of other friends who have been attended by them.“It is such a comfort to have professionals there when you are waiting for the ambulance service to arrive.”Dick Nye, chairman of HART, said: “We are very grate-ful to Lyn and her customers for money which keeps us operating and helps maintain our heart defibrilla-tors and other equipment.”Lyn is planning a fundraising cream tea in Lynne’s memory from 3-5.30pm on Easter weekend, Saturday April 7 at The Fox. white hart pub Quizzes raise £1,000 for hartGyles Culver, landlord of The White Hart, recently handed over a cheque for £1,000 to Dick Nye, chair-man of HART - the Henfield Area Response team. The money is the result of pub quizzes held on every other Tuesday throughout the year. Gyles Culver said: “We are immensely proud to support this group of volun-teers who work tirelessly to save lives in the village. All the credit goes to those who support our quizzes to raise funds.”

henfield parish CounCilCouncil is working in partnership with West Sussex County Council to improve the surface along the Blackgate Lane bridleway. This well used path gets very muddy in wet weather and by the time you read this article it should have received a new more user friendly surface over the previously muddy section. Council has purchased a mechanical pavement vac-uum. This equipment will supplement the good work of the Litter Wardens in their efforts to keep the village centre pavements clean. The vacuum is particularly useful for sucking up cigarette ends and general dust and debris.The Chessbrook Green play area at Wantley Hill Estate is the oldest play area in Henfield and is becoming more difficult to maintain as its condition deteriorates. This Council has proposed new play schemes to ren-ovate the play area and has invited local residents to select their preferred choice. Saxon Weald are very supportive of the proposals and an application for a grant has been submitted to part fund this project. It is hoped that if the application is successful the new play area will be open later this summer.The Annual Henfield Parish meeting was held in early March with around 80 people attending. seven Marathons in seven days to reaCh £21k targetThree Henfield runners will reach run seven mara-thons in seven days for charity starting on Sunday March 25 at the Leisure Centre.Henfield business owner Sam Bremner and postmen Malcolm Lane and Tim Jones are in daily treadmill machine training for the fund-raising ordeal. The three will be joined on various days by 28 other teams and solo runners, or walkers, to raise around £21,000.Seventy percent will go to CLIC Sargent, the chil-dren's cancer charity, and 30 percent to Henfield Lei-sure Centre. The team of three are planning to raise a minimum of just over £6,500 between them.Organiser Tracey Prescott, Sam's sister, said: "We were sparked into action by the plight of our nephew, Ashton Hayne who is six. He was diagnosed with leukemia two years ago and is half way through his treatment. His father Martin Hayne and mum Michelle will also be running a treadmill team marathon at the Leisure Centre."Friend Donna Stephenson will be doing an 'Iron Man' event on March 28th - as well as running in the Brigh-ton Marathon on April 15. The Iron Man consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112-mile cycle ride and a 26.2 mile marathon, all in the same day.There are lots of activities and fundraising fun hap-pening at the Leisure Centre during the week so make sure you support the runners and enjoy the atmo-sphere. The finale on Saturday 31 will see Jack the Lad from Heart FM drawing the Golden Ticket in the

henfield Car parks surveysSurveys of the car parks at the Library and Henfield Hall were undertaken by the Community Partnership and Henfield Parish Council between September 2010 and October 2011 to establish who, why and when they are being used by. The survey found that although the availability of car parking spaces is at times difficult, there is currently no evidence of a sig-nificant parking problem or a deteriorating situation that would suggest a need for controls. From producing props, scenery and costumes before the visit to getting involved with make-up, costume, sound effects and clap-perboard on the day, everyone had a part to play. The lead role (made famous by Marilyn Monroe) was played by a recent addition to the staff team, Matthew Harris who seemed proud to be dressed as a woman for the day! waCky reading at the towersWorld book day at The Tow-ers saw lots of very inventive costumes from pupils and staff including the rather uncomfort-able ones worn by ‘Bill and Ben’ and the very colourful Minnie Mouse and friends. Following on from this success we have launched a ‘Wacky Reading’ competition for the girls to send in a photograph of herself reading in the wackiest place she can find. The photographs will be judged after the Easter holiday and, as an inspiration, here is one where Ms Hansell is doing some paired reading with a giraffe!

henfield goes live!Henfield offers many of the advantages of a traditional country village but that doesn’t stop us making the most of the latest technology. We now have the go ahead to develop a state-of-the-art website that will help everyone to find all the information they need about our village whenever they want it. With the help of a grant just announced by West Sussex County Council, work is getting underway to make it happen.The new website will connect Henfield residents to all the many sources of information about the village, including special offers in the shops as well as clubs, societies, events and activities. It will carry up-to-the-minute information about news and developments in the village, and even the local weather forecast.The website will also be good for local businesses, encouraging use of the High Street and commercial services in Henfield and the adjacent parishes. We also aim to attract more visitors too by helping them to find accommodation, local attractions and things to see and do.A small team of volunteers has been formed and they will be talking to as many people as possible to en-sure the website meets the needs of our community. Team leader Steve Bailey said “We know there is a lot of enthusiasm in the village. Our job now is to make sure that we deliver what people want. Our plan is to have the website designed, built and launched by September.”The project has the active support of both the Parish Council and Henfield Community Partnership. BN5 Magazine is closely involved and will bring many of the features of the printed copy to the new website. Editor, Emma Osman said; “The website gives us the opportunity to get even more information to lo-cal people in a lively and informative way. and Brownies and lots of other activities. The school rec-ognises that the children have talents and virtues that reflect the values or ‘promises’ of the school. These are just as important but perhaps not as widely recognised as some of the organised activities are.The School Governors are proud to announce the cre-ation of a new award – The Governors Award - pre-sented each year to a pupil of St Peters.The Governors Award will be presented to a pupil who embodies the values and promises of our school. It could be someone who has shown particular tenacity, resilience, kindness or courage. It won’t necessarily be some-one who is outstanding in an area of sport, academia, or the arts - it could be that they perform random acts of kindness or do some-thing in the community that is particularly noteworthy. They may have overcome a prob-lem and in doing so demonstrate resilience, or they persevere with something that is dif-ficult and show determination and tenacity. They may have shown great courage in doing something.The school will be seeking nominations from parents, carers, teachers, teaching assis-tants and the wider community. If a pupil of the school has done something noteworthy out of school then we would love to hear about it.This will be an annual event and there will be

an award and a prize of £50 in book vouchers, pre-sented by Governors at a school assembly (we have a donation from a local business to support this, so the award will be self-funded).If you know of a child at St Peters who has done something deserving of this award please write to or email the school Governing body with a brief explana-tion. Sarah Westall’s brownies have been described as ‘little brown square of heaven’ and ‘possibly the best brownies in the world’. We went to meet Sarah

at her ‘Brownie House’ in Partridge Green to find out for ourselves…Sarah originally trained as a chef and she has worked in many local restaurants including The Green Man, The Fountain Inn at Ashurst, and The Crown Inn at Dial Post. However baking has always been her pas-sion: “My Nan makes delicious celebration cakes and when I was young, she used to give me icing bags to play with. I used to love making patterns and experi-menting.”In 2008 Sarah started to make brownies as gifts for family and friends and it was her mum who encour-aged her to turn her hobby into a business. “People would tell me that my brownies were amazing,” said Sarah. “They badgered me to start my own brownie-making business.” However, it wasn’t until the death of a friend that she decided to anything about it. “I realised that life is too short not to follow your dreams so I decided to take the plunge and launch my own business – Just Brownies. I can’t believe it’s been a year already as Just Brownies celebrates its first birth-day in April.”All Sarah’s brownies are made at home in her kitchen by hand using a good old-fashioned spoon and plenty of elbow grease! She likes to use good quality local and British ingredients where possible, for example her eggs come from a farm in Steyning. The weekly quanti-ties of ingredients Sarah requires to make her brownies is quite staggering – she can get through 10 kilos of chocolate, 40 packs of butter and nearly 200 eggs!As well as her original chocolate brownies, Sarah loves to experiment with new and unusual flavours.

Her current range includes rocky-road, honeycomb, rhubarb, peanut butter, curry (yes, really!), cookies and cream (with Oreo cookies), and cookie monster (with Maryland cookies). “Being a trained chef gives me the confidence to experiment with flavours.” said Sarah. “My latest creation is a doughnut brownie which was suggested by a customer – I love people giving me ideas.” For Easter, Sarah has really gone to town creatively and is making Easter cinnamon brownies, mini-egg brownies and mini-egg brolly pops (heart shaped brownies on a stick!).Sarah’s attention to detail doesn’t just stop with the brownies themselves. The packaging is beautifully simple, letting the products speak for themselves.Sarah sells her brownies locally though Budgens in Henfield, Swains Farm Shop, Union Jack Farmshop and the Crown Inn at Dial Post. The White Hart on Henfield High Street is a warm and homely pub which is always bustling with activity - exactly as a village ‘local’ should be. The pub, a

former coaching inn, has been providing sustenance to locals and weary travellers since the 17th century. The current landlord Gyles Culver and his wife Mo are very much involved in the village community, from hosting exhibitions of local artists to fundraising for local first-responder charity HART.As soon as you walk through the door of the White Hart you appreciate the cosy atmosphere created by the log fire, low ceilings and oak beams. The tradi-tional interior is very spacious which meant that the regular pub quiz taking place in the bar area did not disturb our serious business of eating and chatting in the restaurant! For a weekday evening, the pub was surprisingly busy creating a nice buzz. The pub is owned by the fam-ily brewers Hall and Woodhouse and stocks a good range of Badger real ales as well as lagers and wine.The menu has a wide selection of classic and conti-nental style dishes and the focus is very much on meat and fish (vegetarians have limited choices). Many of the dishes feature fresh produce sourced from local suppliers such as SK Hutchings in Partridge Green, Just Fish in Hurstpierpoint, Jeremys in Henfield and Springs Smoked Salmon in Edburton. In addition to the regular menu and a specials board there is a good value weekday set menu. For our starters we chose the goats cheese, roasted red pepper and sweet onion tartlet served on a bed of rocket with balsamic dressing, and the smoked trout and horse-radish pate with toasted ciabatta. The tartlet was beau-tifully presented and the flavours worked well together, although the pastry could have been a little crisper. The generous serving of pate was almost a meal in itself!

Although tempted by the Hutchings 28 day rib-eye steak, I decided on the char-grilled chicken breast marinated in olive oil, balsamic vinegar, red onions and fresh basil served with mixed salad leaves and chips. The chicken was succulent and tasty, the salad leaves lovely and fresh, and the salad dressing was just deli-cious (landlady Mo is famous for her fabulous home-made salad dressings which can be bought from the pub as well as in Budgens and Swains Farm Shop).My friend chose the Sussex pork sausages, mustard mash with ale and onion gravy. This was a hearty and warming dish, although it would have benefited from a side order of vegetables.Feeling rather full after our two courses we decided to share a pudding. We were seriously tempted by the sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream, but eventually opted for a traditional lemon posset with shortbread and we weren’t disappointed. The creamy texture worked beautifully with the crunchy short-bread and the sharp lemon flavour was the perfect end to our meal.The bar staff and waitresses were polite and their ser-vice was very prompt. We were particularly impressed by our waitress Jennie, who was friendly, smiley and demonstrated great customer service.We had a very enjoyable evening. The hamlet of Dragons Green in the Parish of Shipley lies only a quarter of a mile north of the A272 about 1½ miles west of the Buck Barn traffic lights. Its

name derives from the many stories of large beasts that lived here in the dense forests of Sussex. We park (with permission) in the George & Dragon pub car park (Grid Ref. TQ 139235) and head north towards Southwater for one of our most popular walks (distance 5 ¾ miles). The George & Dragon has been a pub for over 200 years. In the late 19th century it was owned as a free house by Alfred and Charlotte Budd, whose son Wal-ter was born an albino and who suffered occasion-ally from epileptic fits. Walter was taunted throughout his life and, after being accused of theft (wrongly), he drowned himself in 1893. He was buried in Shipley churchyard where his parents erected a headstone in-scribed ‘May God forgive those who forgot their duty to him who was just and afflicted’. The vicar at the time, Rev H. Gorman, took this as a personal affront and had it removed. Walter’s parents then erected the memorial cross in the front garden of their pub, the George & Dragon, where it is still sited today complete with its original inscription.From the car park to the west can be seen the lo-cal Scout Hut which was formerly a Methodist chapel built about 1860. Behind this was a timber-framed house which was dismantled and sent to America in the early part of the last century.We turn west through Marlpost Wood to Crookhorn Farm (owned in 1811 by Francis Scawen Blunt,) where we usually stop for a brief tea break before heading south through Madgeland Wood to the ham-let of Brooks Green. A small section of road walking follows past Shipley Hall and Chivers Farm where we turn east to Lackenhurst, a restored 16th century tim-ber framed house with a Horsham slab roof. Its name was first recorded in 1285 and it was Grade II listed in 1959.

Continuing west past the natural spring Abraham’s Well and after walking along the southern edge of Newbuildings Plantation, we come to a wagon pond. This was restored by Shipley Venture Scouts in 1999 with permission of the landowner, Lord Lytton of New-buildings Place.Our walk circles Newbuildings Place which was origi-nally a house built on a sandstone watershed by Phil-lip Caryll in 1683. It was more recently owned by the (in)famous Wilfred Scarwen Blunt (1847-1922) who married Byron’s granddaughter, Lady Anne, Baron-ess Wentworth in 1869. The couple separated in 1906 and Wilfred’s mistress, Dorothy Carleton, immediately moved in with him. Wilfred was a writer, politician and poet. He imported Arab horses and in 1878 started the Arab Stud at Crabbet Park in Worth. The house was visited by many well-known people including Hi-laire Belloc (Shipley Windmill), Oscar Wilde, William Morris and Winston Churchill. Wilfred’s tomb is in the grounds although unfortunately we cannot visit it be-cause it is not on a public right of way.The only surviving child of Wilfred and Lady Anne was Judith, who inherited her mother’s title of 16th Bar-oness Wentworth and married Neville Stephen Lytton (the youngest son of the Earl of Lytton). Following a number of divorces, court cases, re-purchases and inheritances, Newbuildings Place became the prop-erty of John Peter Michael Scarwen Blunt (born 1950), the 5th Earl of Lytton and 18th Baron Wentworth.We now rejoin the path we took earlier about ½ mile north of the start. You need to work out your total taxable income before assessing which CGT rate to use. First, work out your taxable income by deducting any tax-free allowances and reliefs that you are entitled to. Next, see how much of your basic rate band is already being used against your taxable income. The basic rate band for 2011-12 is £35,000. Then allocate any remaining basic rate band against your other gains; these are charged at 18%. Any remaining gains above the basic rate band are charged at 28%. However, any gains that qualify for Entrepreneurs’ Relief are charged at 10%.CGT is payable on 31 January following the end of the Tax Year in which the disposal was made. So the CGT on disposals made in 2011/12 is due on 31 January 2013. As a planning point therefore, disposals made early in the Tax Year (rather than towards the end of the Tax Year) give you longer to pay the CGT. For example, a disposal on 1 April 2012 will result in the CGT falling due to be paid on 31 January 2013. But if the disposal was delayed by just one month to 1 May 2012 (i.e. early in the new Tax Year), the CGT payment date is pushed back to 31 January 2014.Always remember that the date of disposal is deemed to be the date when the sale becomes unconditional. Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is a tax on capital ‘gains’. When you sell or give away an asset and it has increased in value, you may be taxable on the

gain (profit). This does not apply when you sell personal belongings worth £6,000 or less or (in most cases), your main home.You may have to pay CGT if, for example, you cease to own an asset or part of an asset (for example you sell, give away or exchange it), or if you receive money from an asset (for example, compensation for a dam-aged asset).However, you do not have to pay CGT on selling your car, ISAs, UK government gilts (bonds), betting, lot-tery or pools winnings, or on any money that forms part of your income for Income Tax purposes.There are some points to bear in mind, as follows:

If you are married or in a civil partnership and • living together, you can transfer assets to your spouse or civil partner without having to pay CGT;You can’t give assets to your children or others, • or sell assets cheaply without having to consider CGT;If you make a loss you may be able to make • a claim for that loss and deduct it from other gains, but only if the asset normally attracts CGT .
