Beloved Members,
Hmmmm almost a year has passed rom when we shouldered themantle o our club administration. It was indeed a pleasure to shareour club news and matters o your interest every month through thisNews Letter. Our team has achieved almost 95 percent o what hasbeen planned at the beginning o the term. Many new acilities havebeen created or Ladies and Children in mind, apart rom the usualimprovements. Our special thanks are to Er. Allan D Souza (1092)who spared his Saturday evenings in conducting the Tambola Event.
Our Sports section has been very active, barring the hurdles acedby Er. Radha and his team in coordinating Alumpics. Our Tennisbigwigs stole the show in TNTA. Our Cricketers hosted and playedenough cricket and inducted bright new aces to our club team also.Second edition o Invitation Snooker Tournament with HIGHESTPRIZE MONEY was well organised in association with TNBSA andappreciated by the participating Top National Players as well as bythe spectators world over. (Live Web casting paved way or Globalviewing).
Entertainment section was vibrant with screening o up-to-datemovies. (Almost all the New Movies were screened rst at ourclub and other clubs ollowed suit). Friday movies had very poor
response. Y.G Mahindras Drama, Folk Dance promoting NattuppuraKalaighal, Disco and Karaoke had very good response. Credit tothe improvement in the Catering section almost all days witnessedgood occupancy o our acilities, translating to better revenue.(NO APPRECIABLE PRICE INCREASE was passed on to membersthis year). The damage and threat by the Cyclone Thane was overpowered with the tireless eort o our sta and the New YearCelebrations was a tremendous success.
Well, all the above narrations might sound like the Annual Report. Please do come without ail and participate in the AGM at 10.30 amon 24th June, to witness the REAL ANNUAL REPORTING.
Thank you one and all or making our Tenure a Pleasurable andFruitul one.

Shimantini Banerjee d-i-l ofEr. P. Ramanathan, 1099
I miss my torrid love aair with books. All through school and college, my onlysignicant enterprise during the vacations, was to read. I picked up this habit, all oeight years old, when I stumbled upon myathers childhood storybook collection whilerummaging in the attic. I was mesmerised as Iturned the pages o classics like Black Beauty,Robin Hood, Matilda, David Coppereld, The
Magic Faraway Tree, Shelock Holmes, HerculePoirot and many, many more. I absorbedthem all like a sponge. I eventually graduatedto Ernest Hemmingway, George Orwell,Sidney Sheldon, Jeery Archer, Gabriel GarciaMarquez, Eric Segal, Jhumpa Lahiri, PauloCoelho and even the occasional DanielleSteel thrown in. They uelled my imaginationand while I was held captive by the characterswhich took shape beore my eyes, I wasno longer conned by the limitations o
my surroundings. Books transport me to amagical world and when I close them shut,
albeit reluctantly, I land with a resoundingthud. I was ortunate that my parents neverorced me to read a book just because I was atan age when a particular book was prescribed.I enjoyed a ree reign as ar as books wereconcerned and so, I would read only or theunparalleled pleasure o reading. I read notbecause I should read a certain book but onlybecause I wanted to read it.
I remember when the Harry Potter serieswas published, I read The Goblet o Firerelentlessly. I would wake up at dawn to readit with great excitement and anticipation, Iread it in the shower (a delicate balancingact, yes, but I did not let a trivial thing suchas a shower create a rude interruption), Iread while sitting on the potty, through mymeals and even by the candlelight (ater I wasorced to switch my lights o and turn in).
There is an overwhelming sense o urgencyand expectation every time I turn the page o

a new book. Within those pages lie countlesspossibilities or adventure and excitement, orthrilling mysteries and nail-biting suspense, orshock, grie, or romance and so much more.O course, there are plenty o books that I did
not enjoy reading very much, perhaps becauseI was not ready or them. A case in point beingDaphne du Mauriers highly acclaimed work,Rebecca. I rst picked up a copy o this bookwhen I was in high school and despite mybest eorts I abandoned it hal way through. However years later when I read it again, thesame story o intrigue and deceit was nothingshort o page turner or me. Hence, I ama rm believer in the act that every bookwe read has a unique place in our lives, weread them at the right time and when wedo, they are deeply meaningul and have theappropriate impact on us.
With the passing o years, my devotion tobooks may have diminished in intensity butmy passion or them has not. I read ar ewerbooks now but when I do, the same wave oelation and delight still washes over me. Butrecently, I have committed a heinous crime, nothing short o indelity as ar my love orbooks go. I have judged a book by its cover. No, I mean that quite literally. I reused toread the phenomenal bestseller A MonkWho Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma, onlybecause the book jacket carried the blaringheadlines: This book will bless your lie, withthe picture o a lone cyclist standing in ronto a bright blue ocean. Another prescribedtextbook or the lost soul to pass in theexamination o lie, I thought. (Much like the
highly recommended Kaplan series designedto pass your GRE, I jibed on to mysel).
My mind instantly partitioned it to thebookshel o countless new-age sel-helpbooks bursting with dime-a-dozen techniqueson how to lead your lie and rene yourseluntil you shine like a newly minted coin. But their impact is only as lasting as the nextreal-lie problem that hits you smack in theace. I know o a dear riend who, in a t o
desperation to save her crumbling marriage, actually resorted to shufing through thepages o those very books in hopes o nding a
remedy or her marital issues. But isnt the realendeavour o all sel-help books to make itsreader sel-sucient and eliminate the need togo darting back to them in times o trouble?
But coming back to this book in question, Imust say I am ashamed o the act that I wasclouded by my pre-conceived notions. So whenit accidentally dropped into my hands whileI was sning books at the local library (I amnot weird, I just like the smell o old books),I decided its time I read what this blessinghas to oer. So here I am, nestled comortablyin my bed, armed with a mug o steamingcoee. I turn the page (a bit o curtain raisermoment, i you ask me) in anticipation tobegin my journey along the neat array o typedwords. Within them lie the true essence o abook. So, what treasures will this particularone hold or me? As always there is noprescription and as always, I cant wait to ndout!

England vs Pakistan : 4th Test MatchAugust 17-21, 2006,Kennington Oval, LondonA Hair Raising Affair
Umpire Darrell Hair and Billy Doctrove
awarded ve penalty runs to England aterruling that the Pakistan Team had beeninvolved in ball tampering. The PakistanTeam reused to take the eld post tea. Theumpires gave a warning to the Pakistanteam, asking them to take the eld. ThePakistan team did not budge. So, the matchwas awarded to England. The Pakistan teamthen took the eld but the umpires hadalready taken the bails o ater declaring thatEngland had won and reused to continue.
This incident snowballed into a big avalancheand sparks few o the eld. In July 2008,the ICC changed the result o the match toa Draw. Ater many more deliberations andintererence rom the MCC (MaryleboneCricket Club), on 1st February 2009, the ICCreversed their earlier decision and changedthe match result back to a win or England.
In the midst o all this, Darrel Hair wasremoved rom the ICCs elite panel o umpires
in November 2006. Later, Andrew Strauss, who was the English skipper or the gamedescribed the entire incident as a trainwreck. This match had let an indelible markin the games history books.
On the rst aternoon o the Boxing Day testo 1995, Muttiah Muralitharan was no-balledor throwing, seven times in three overs byumpire Darrell Hair. The instances, at whichhe was called too, were perplexing. Muralibowled two overs beore lunch on Day 1, withUmpire Steve Dunne ociating rom thebowlers end. No incident was reported eitherby Dunne (standing at the bowlers end) or
Hair who was standing at square leg. Hair wasumpiring at the bowlers end when Muralistarted bowling again. A maiden over wasdelivered. All six deliveries were consideredully legitimate by Hair . In Muralis next over,Hair called him or two no balls and in thenext that the bowler delivered, he was no-balled on three occasions. The Sri Lankancaptain or the test match, Arjuna Ranatungalet the eld along with his players to have aword with his management. He was extremely
upset. Ater a while, play resumed and Muraliwas called or throwing, again by Darrell Hairanother couple o times. Muralis action waslater cleared by the ICC. This test however, leta sour taste in the mouth o many cricket ans.

The stage was set or the Grand Finale o the ICC Cricket World Cup, 2011 between Indiaand Sri Lanka. Things got o to a conusing start. A bizarre incident happened at the tosswhen Kumar Sangakkara reused to tell what he had called ater he saw the coin all oneway. No one including the match reeree had heard it and Sangakkara got away with it. Hestood poker aced and the coin went up into the air or the second time. It was shockingthat this came rom a man who claims to Walk when he knows he is out. May be themagnitude o the occasion made him act thus. Sri Lanka won the toss, but India won thematch and with it the World Cup.
To be continued
Look out or the fnal part in next months issueCheers,Aswath

CLUB GOING GREENIN a SMaLL WaYSolAR PoWERPACKSOMe FUNDOOSFOr U
The greenhouse eect is a process by whichthermal radiation rom a planetary surace isabsorbed by atmospheric greenhouse gases, and is re-radiated in all directions. Sincepart o this re-radiation is back towardsthe surace and the lower atmosphere, itresults in an elevation o the average surace
temperature above what it would be in theabsence o the gases. This process is theundamental cause o the greenhouse eect. The Solar Energy Conversion is one o theRECENT STEPS taken in the directiono conserving the ossil & other non-replenishment uels and in thus reducingthe noxious emissions (Green House Gases)emanating rom their usage. Green HouseGases are the Primary concern today andany reduction leads to better environment
and thus going green.
During the day (rom 6 am to 6 pm) thesuns rays are made to all on the array oPhoto-Voltaic Cells, called Solar Panels, and converted into Direct Current (DC).Depending on the requirement o morePower (Wattage) more array o cells areadded. This DC current through an Invertergets converted in to Alternating Current(AC). I we can store the DC current in
Batteries and convert to AC during powercuts then it is called OFF-GRID. On the
other hand i we are directly connected to theEB grid, more akin to Generator connection,is known as ON-GRID System. Basically i wehave a backup power supply such as DG set itis wise and preerable to go in or ON GRIDsystem. For this Solar Power Pack ON GRIDsystem, either Electricity Board power or
Generator power is a must and which is thecase o our Club.
We can also store partly or our basicrequirements and balance can be sentto Grid. At present there is no REVERSEMetering (that is whatever current, in excesso our consumption, being sent to Gridrom the power pack and will be meteredand credit given in our electricity bills) butsoon all State Governments need to give
this credit to encourage more investmentsrom public in Solar Power. Due to a higherpotential being maintained at solar pack levelwhatever current produced by Solar will berst consumed and balance requirement willbe drawn rom EB Grid Power or rom theGenerator power.
Let us now understand the Financials in asimple way. Presently the cost o 1 kWp (KiloWatt Peak) O Grid Power Pack is trading
around `98,000/= plus Taxes without subsidy. Please nd the link below to nd details

o subsidy tari. http://teda.in/index.php?r=site/index&id=3J1o5S9d2d
Each 1 kWp solar power pack will produce ina bright sunny day (between 10 am to 3 pm)around 5 to 5.5 units. Assuming 300 suchbright days (or Chennai) and balance 65
days only 2.5 units production, we have (300x 5.5 + 65 x 2.5) = (1650 + 162.5) = 1812.5units. Assuming present commercial tari@ `8/= we get`14,500/= annual saving perKW rom Solar pack. Thus simple Return onInvestment (ROI) is nearly 7 years.
(I we assume that there will be 10%increase in Electricity Tari every 2 years, then this period will drastically come down. Also today cost o producing Electricity
through Generator is around `25/= to`28/= and presently we have 2 hour powercut in the city but more hours at rural TN.This will also contribute to lesser years orrealising the Capital Cost. On an average itis between 3 to 4 years)
As you would have seen, CentralGovernment gives a maximum subsidy o`57,000/= per kWp or ON GRID and moreor battery supported O Grid system.
Also Investment is eligible or 80% astdepreciation in the rst year itsel. Concept
o Green Energy and Obligation to Societydrives more Customer Demand and thusprices are alling steeply.
Important Points to Remember: 25 yearswarranty is oered or the Crystalline SilicaPV array and 5 to 8 years or the Inverter.
For O Grid system it is seen that every 4thyear the Battery need to be replaced, atexorbitant cost, almost 35% o theproject cost.
