1 BOARD OF EDUCATION Minutes Work Session/Regular Meeting December 9, 2019 The Board President, Mrs. Jennifer Montone, called the work session portion of the meeting of the City of Burlington Board of Education to order on this date at 5:32 PM in the Wilbur Watts Intermediate School Large Group Instruction Room. Mr. Coxe read the sunshine statement. The following members were present: Dr. Ciccanti, Mrs. MacDonald (5:46 PM), Mrs. Montone, Mrs. Schuck, Mr. Turner, Mr. Kamps, Mrs. Mettrock, Mrs. Keefe and Mrs. Gaspard-Tovar (5:37 PM). BOARD OF EDUCATION Minutes Work Session/Regular Meeting

December 9, 2019 The Board President, Mrs. Jennifer Montone, called the work session portion of the meeting of the City of Burlington Board of Education to order on this date at 5:32 PM in the Wilbur Watts Intermediate School Large Group Instruction Room. Mr. Coxe read the sunshine statement. Dr. Ciccanti with a second by Mrs. Keefe moved to enter into executive session at 5:34 PM for discussion on personnel, litigation, contractual issues, and to conduct a grievance hearing pursuant to collective bargaining agreement.

Mrs. Schuck excused herself from the meeting at 6:45 PM Mrs. Montone declared a recess of the executive work session at 6:30 so that members could attend the PRIDE ceremony. The Board members returned to the Large Group Instruction Room at 7:00 PM. Mrs. Mettrock with a second by Mr. Turner moved to close executive session and return to open, public session at 7:05 PM.

SIGN-IN SHEET EXHIBIT I SPECIAL REPORT

1. Presentation by Burlington City Police Department Chief, John Fine, regarding District School Resource Officer Chief Fine was not present when the Board got to this portion of the meeting. Since the presentation will entail contractual terms, the Board requested to conduct the discussion in closed, executive session at the end of the meeting.

CORRESPONDENCE None. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT Dr. Fitts reviewed the following items with the Board of Education under the Superintendent’s Report.

1. Teacher presentation. Dr. Fitts introduced Dr. John Russell to conduct the presentation. Dr. Russell discussed how the administration nominated two teachers from the district for the NJ DOE’s Exemplary Educator program. Dr. Russell was pleased to announce that Burlington City had two teachers named Exemplary Educator. They were 2 of the 85 named across the State of New Jersey. Dr. Russell introduced Mr. Flynn to speak of the first recipient, Mr. Jamal Jones. Mr. Flynn spoke of all Mr. Jones’s accomplishments and his relationship with students and families in the community. Dr. Russell spoke of the second recipient, Mrs. Karen Dugan. Dr. Russell spoke of her development into the master teacher she is today. Dr. Fitts congratulated both recipients and requested that they now continue their approach to teaching by serving as mentors to their peers.

Would like to develop a program to collect plastic caps from soft drinks./ She would like to work with Principal Shappell to develop a collection process for the caps. She requested permission to place canisters in both Wilbur Watts and Burlington City High School.

BOARD OF EDUCATION COMMENTS All Board members present congratulated Mr. Jones and Mrs. Dugan and expressed the positive light their work casts on all the teachers in the district who work hard each day. All members also wished everyone a happy and safe holiday. Mr. Turner spoke of all the positives Mr. Jones has done in the community. Mrs. MacDonald congratulated the PRIDE recipients and DJ Woodbury on his signing. Mrs. Gaspard Tovar spoke of the holiday concerts in the schools. Mrs. Montone thanked everyone for their work throughout the year and wished everyone a happy holiday season.
