Your Dorm RoomMost of Baylor’s rooms are designed for double occupancy. Sharing a room in a dorm full of other teenagers also enhances students’ development of life skills and independence. Student rooms quickly become home. New students receive their dorm room and roommate assignments during orientation.

The rooms vary in size and layout. Shades are provided in all of the windows. Each room in Hunter, Probasco, Harrison, and Riverfront has a standard twin bed (39" x 75"). Beds in Lowrance and Lupton Halls have extra long twin beds (39" x 80"). Since new students do not find out their dorm until Orientation, we will make sure you have ample time to shop at local stores for your bedding. All rooms contain a chest of drawers (or shelves in a closet), a desk, a chair, and a trash can. All residence halls are wireless. There are also numerous computer labs across campus.

It is our experience that parents and students like to do some summer shopping for things that will be needed for the school year. Please don’t worry if you forget something. There are several Wal-Mart and Target stores near Baylor. We also have a school bus that travels to area stores twice a week, so there is plenty of time and opportunity to pick up any last minute items!

Below is a list to help you as you pack and prepare for your Baylor adventures:

STUFF YOU NEEDStandard twin sheets, pillow, blankets and comforter (see note above) Alarm clock, lamp and flashlight Basic schools supplies (Baylor does have a fully stocked bookstore.)Plastic bucket or tray for shampoo, soap, toothpaste and other toiletries Flip flops, a robe, towels and washcloths HeadphonesLaundry basket/bag and detergent Necessary medications (Note: All prescription medications must be stored and distributed at the Health Center.)Umbrella, rain jacket with hoodUSA cell phoneUSA iTunes account

Additional items many students enjoy:•a monitor or TV no larger than 32"•as much memory (RAM) as possible, this is usually at least 1 GB•external speakers•CD and/or DVD burner•USB drives•a personal printer – this should NOT be wireless

STUFF YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE THOUGHT OF...Books for pleasure readingSunscreen and sunglasses Boots (for rainy days)Tennis RacketFrisbee

STUFF YOU DON’T NEED, BUT MOST STUDENTS LIKE TO HAVEPictures from home Posters (No nails, please! Use putty or tape!)Munchies (and sealable containers to hold leftovers)Drinks (water/Gatorade/soda)A mug for hot drinks, a bowl and spoon for soup or noodlesUnder-the-bed storage boxes Shelving and/or crates Micro fridge (individual or shared with your roommate)

STUFF THAT’S NOT ALLOWED ON CAMPUSCandles, matches, lighters or incenseMicrowaves, toaster ovens, crock pots, coffee pots, electric tea kettles, popcorn poppers, rice cookers, hot plates, or space heaters Halogen lamps, decorative string or rope lightsNo firearms (including hunting rifles, ammunition, bows, arrows, knives, air guns or paintball guns)Fireworks or explosivesNo pets

INSURANCEBaylor is a safe and caring environment, but like your home, it still re-quires forethought about protecting personal belongings. We encourage you to talk to your insurance agent and consider some form of rider on your home insurance.

Remember: Boarders will be sharing their space and will be required to keep their area neat and clean – when stocking a room – less is more!

Dress Code + UniformsWHAT WILL I WEAR DURING THE SCHOOL DAY?Dress uniforms are worn on Monday for Chapel.• boys: button down uniform dress shirt with tie and uniform pants or shorts• girls: button down uniform dress shirt with uniform pants or any uniform skirt

Casual uniforms (other days): B-shirt (casual polo-type shirt) with uni-form pants. Girls may also wear any approved uniform skirt and boys may wear uniform shorts.

WHERE CAN I PURCHASE MY UNIFORMS?Uniform items can be purchased by visiting the Campus Store or Edu-cational Outfitters in Chattanooga. Items can also be purchased online from the Campus Store, Educational Outfitters or Lands’ End.• B-shirts (polo style) and approved uniform sweatshirts are ONLY available at the Campus Store.• Button-down uniform dress shirts, uniform pants, all styles of uniform skirts, uniform sweaters and vests are available from Educational Outfitters and Lands’ End.

WHEN CAN I PURCHASE MY UNIFORMS?• If you’re in Chattanooga this summer, you can plan a trip to the Baylor

Campus Store and Educational Outfitters where your teen can try on uniform items and receive assistance in fittings. If you need alterations on pants or skirts, Educational Outfitters will alter the items and de-liver them to Baylor. Girls should be mindful of skirt lengths (no more than four inches above the crease on the back of the knee).

• You can purchase items online at any time using the links on this page. Visit the individual websites for information on summer hours and online purchases.• You can visit the Campus Store and Educational Outfitters during

Orientation to make final purchases. There is even a special time built into Orientation for international families to visit Educational Outfitters.

HOW MANY UNIFORMS WILL I NEED?This is up to you, but most boarders like enough uniforms to last for the week so they can do laundry on the weekends.

Many students buy:• one or two button-down uniform dress shirts (Girls prefer the 3/4 sleeve dress shirt that does not have to be tucked in.)• four B-shirts• boys: three or more pairs of uniform pants• girls: three or more uniform skirts or uniform pants

WHAT ABOUT SHOES, SOCKS, BELTS, ETC.?These items are not part of the official uniform, but note the following guidelines:• Belt must be worn with uniform pants.• Socks must be worn and visible and in good taste.• Most students wear tennis shoes for comfort, but any closed-toe shoe is acceptable.• Boys may wear any traditional tie or bow tie with dress shirts.

WHAT TYPES OF OUTERWEAR WILL I NEED?Only official uniform sweatshirts or sweaters/vests may be worn in class-rooms. You will need a warm coat for cold winter months. Raincoats with hoods are certainly helpful traveling between classes on rainy days.

WHAT CAN I WEAR AROUND CAMPUS ON EVENINGS ANDWEEKENDS?No uniforms are required after classes on weekdays and on weekends. You will want to bring appropriate, casual clothes for these times.

Tip: keep your casual clothes to a manageable amount – more clothes than necessary in a dorm room makes it harder to keep a neat room.

DIRECTIONS TO CAMPUS• Chattanooga is approximately a two hour drive from Atlanta, Birming- ham, Knoxville and Nashville.• From I-75 or I-59: follow I-24 and take exit 178 (U.S. 27 North).• After crossing the Tennessee River, take the U.S. 127/Signal Mountain Road exit. • Proceed under the overpass and move into the left turn lane. The campus entrance is located on the left at the third light.

AIRPORTS and AIRPORT TRANSPORTATIONChattanooga: The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA/Lovell Field) is located within 30 minutes of campus. This is the recommended air-port for arrivals and departures. The Chattanooga Airport is a small, un-crowded airport. Travelers can arrive one hour before their flights and se-curity lines are rarely long. For students traveling alone, the Chattanooga Airport is much easier to negotiate than the Atlanta airport. Their website contains links to airlines, car rental agencies and taxi services.

The Baylor bus makes regular trips between campus and the Chatta-nooga airport at the beginning and end of each school break. School break bus schedules are posted and students do not need reservations to ride the bus for these times. Transportation to the Chattanooga Airport is available by reservation at other times. Please contact the Residential Life Office (ext. 339) for assistance.

Atlanta: The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is ap-proximately two hours from Chattanooga. When scheduling flights out of Atlanta, please be sure to consider travel time (allow three hours) and

airline check-in requirements (allow two hours for domestic flights and

three hours for international or holiday flights, more time should be al-

lowed during holiday travel as security lines can be long).

Nashville: The Nashville International Airport (BNA) is approximately two

hours and fifteen minutes from Chattanooga. When scheduling flights

from the Nashville Airport, please be mindful of the time difference; the

Nashville Airport is in the Central Time Zone.

Atlanta and Nashville Airport Transportation: Groome Shuttle provides

transportation to and from the Atlanta and Nashville Airports on a regular

basis. Groome also provides pick up and drop off at Baylor’s campus, but

this must be requested when the shuttle reservation is made. The cost of

shuttle transportation can not be billed to a student’s account. Parents

may provide a credit card number ahead of time or the student must

pay at pick up by cash, check or credit card. Reservations can be made

directly with Groome or through the Residential Life Office (ext. 339).

UNACCOMPANIED MINOR TRANSPORTATION

Students designated as unaccompanied minors by the airline (gener-

ally students less than 15 years of age, but individual guidelines vary

by airline) sometimes require special arrangements for transportation

and check-in or check-out by a designated individual from the gate as

they fly. We will be happy to help you with this, but appreciate plenty of

advance notice to make proper arrangements. If your child will be flying

as an unaccompanied minor, please contact the Residential Life Office

(ext. 339) for arrangements and fees.

BAYLOR CAMPUS STOREThe Baylor Bookstore is located on the lower level of Guerry Hall. Op-erating hours during the school year are 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Mon-day through Friday. The Campus Store carries a wide range of apparel, including uniform B-shirts and uniform sweatshirts, school supplies, some personal supplies, and stamps for the convenience of boarding students. An ATM machine is located just outside of the Bookstore.

BUSINESS OFFICE AND MONEY MATTERSThe Business Office offers services to assist with student finances. Stu-dents are issued a personal Tiger Swipe ID card that can be used for purchases around campus. The Tiger Swipe functions like an on-campus charge card allowing students to charge purchases made in the Campus Store and Grill and for other on-campus activities. Items purchased by Tiger Swipe are billed on the student’s monthly statement. Students are not allowed to bring large amounts of cash to campus. It is not recom-mended that parents send cash to your child via the US Postal Service. The Campus Store will cash checks for boarding students, or, if you must send cash, we recommend sending it via UPS or FedEx so that it may be tracked.

DEBIT CARDSStudents are required to have a debit or credit card. Students have access to the on-campus ATM for cash withdrawals at their parents’ discretion.

DOCUMENT AND VALUABLES STORAGEStudents must store passports, VISAS, and I-20s in the Residential Life Of-fice. They may be picked up prior to travel. Additionally, all dorms, with the exception of Riverfront, include a personal lockbox for each student in their dorm room. Students provide their own lock for their personal lockbox.

FAX SERVICEYou and your child may send and receive faxes through the Residential Life Office at: (423) 757-2550.

MAILROOMThe Baylor Bookstore maintains mail facilities for the boarding commu-nity on the lower level of Guerry Hall. They process incoming and outgo-ing mail via the US Postal Service, UPS and Federal Express. Each stu-dent is assigned a numbered mailbox corresponding to their dorm room.

If you wish to send something to your child, please address it according to the following format:Student’s Namec/o Baylor School171 Baylor School RoadChattanooga, TN 37405

Please use UPS or Federal Express for overnight or expedited mail (not the US Postal Service) as it will arrive within the timeframe you specify and there is a tracking number that we can refer to if the need arises.

If you have any questions, please contact:Mark Baliles, ManagerBaylor Campus Store(423) 757-2566

SHIPPING AND STORAGE SERVICESNew boarding students are welcome to ship items to Baylor for sum-mer storage. The mailroom will receive and store luggage and packages until your arrival in August. These packages may be picked up in the bookstore/mailroom. During the summer months, each dorm has an assigned storage unit for returning boarding students to store their per-sonal items (no electronics, please) for the next school year.

International Student InfoINTERNATIONAL ORIENTATIONWe encourage parents to attend Orientation with their child if possible. Very often, this is one of the few times that our international parents visit campus. This is your chance to meet your child’s adviser, dorm faculty, teachers, and deans. Orientation is also a great time to have all of your questions answered. Families should plan to arrive in Chattanooga on Wednesday, August 13. Parents, if you need an invitation letter to ob-tain a visa, please let us know as soon as possible.

CHILDREN TRAVELING ALONE TO BAYLORWe understand that it is not always possible for parents to attend Ori-entation with their child. If your child will be traveling alone, please let us know as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made for a Baylor faculty member to meet your child at the Chattanooga airport. All students who are arriving unaccompanied by parents MUST fly into the Chattanooga Airport. You will receive an email before your child’s departure date with arrival information for your child. Students traveling alone should arrive on Wednesday, August 13. They will move into their dorm room upon arrival.

SCHOOL BREAKS AND TRAVELWhile it may seem strange to be thinking ahead to school breaks and airline reservations, we encourage you to review the School Break Travel Planner and purchase plane tickets now for any school breaks when your child will be traveling home. In order to travel affordably and without missing class time, airline tickets must be booked months in advance. When scheduling flights out of Atlanta, please be sure to consider travel to the Atlanta airport (allow 3 hours) and airline check-in requirements (allow 2 hours for domestic flights and 3 hours for international or holi-day flights).

We realize that some international flights are only available once each day or even less. In this case, when we dismiss school at noon for a school break, students are allowed to leave earlier than noon for their flights. Dorms close at 5:00 p.m. the day break begins.

Note about Thanksgiving Break: International students may NOT be excused from classes on Friday, Nov. 21 for travel. Dorms remain open on Friday night. International students may depart on Saturday, Nov. 22 if a Friday flight would require them to depart before the end of the school day.

Dorms remain open during Fall and Winter Breaks. Students may stay on campus for these breaks (there is an additional charge).

The school is completely closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Breaks. Parents are responsible for making arrangements for their child during these breaks. Most students travel home or to a relative or friend of the family for these long breaks as local stays are not possible. (All students generally travel home for Christmas Break.)

BANKINGAll international students MUST HAVE a U.S. debit or credit card. For those parents who will attend Orientation at Baylor, SunTrust Bank will be present on campus during orientation to assist you in opening a checking account. SunTrust has a branch located in the Wal-Mart store that is located near Baylor. Parents who will not attend Orientation at Baylor may wish to locate a U.S. bank that has a branch in their home city or locate an online bank. Many United States banks have branches in major cities around the world. A few banks to try are:

Bank of America: www.bankofamerica.com Citibank: citibank.comJP Morgan Chase: www.jpmorganchase.com

iTunes AccountIn order to purchase certain text books and iPad apps, you must have a U.S. iTunes account. Please be prepared to open this U.S. iTunes account with your U.S. debit or credit card when you arrive at Baylor.

HEALTH INSURANCEUnited States health insurance is required for all international students. You may choose any company you like for this purpose, as long as they have a claims office address that is within the United States. One com-pany that offers this type of insurance is Global Secutive (www.esecu-tive.com), you may purchase your child’s insurance online from this site. Please choose the Patriot Exchange Plan. If you have not already done so, you should purchase your child’s health insurance right away. A front and back copy of the health insurance card must be sent to Baylor with the required health forms. Students must have proof of health insur-ance to attend classes. Note: Students MUST have US health insurance; travel insurance is not sufficient.

CELL PHONESFor safety during travel and ease of communication with parents, all in-ternational students MUST have a United States cell phone. Cell phones can be purchased online or locally in Chattanooga during Orientation. A local cell phone company will be present at Orientation

IMMIGRATION DOCUMENTSPlease be sure to bring all of your child’s documents (original I-20 and passport with visa) with you to International Orientation. These docu-ments will be kept in a safe for secure storage. We recommend that you make a copy of your child’s passport, visas, I-20s, birth certificate, health insurance card, immunization records and any other official docu-ments to keep at home.

Please feel free to contact us anytime with questions at:(423) [email protected]@[email protected]@baylorschool.org

We look forward to meeting you in person at Orientation.

Technology Tips

USING FIRSTCLASS EMAILAs parents, you have a couple of options in accessing your Baylor First-Class email. You can click on the “email” link located on the navigation bar at the top of the Baylor website (www.baylorschool.org). However, we highly recommend downloading the FirstClass client on your desktop as a convenient way to check your Baylor email.

• Go to the “Parents” section of the Baylor website, click on “Parent Re-source Center,” then “Tech Support” in the left-hand column.• Click on the FirstClass email in-stallation link in the box (shown here) located on the upper right side of the page and follow the few

simple steps for the free download.• Once the client appears on your desktop, simply login in using your assigned i.d. and password. We believe you will find this is a faster and easier method of using Baylor email.

RECEIVING BAYLOR EMAILS DIRECTLY TO WORK OR HOME EMAIL ACCOUNTSMany of our parents find it more convenient to have their Baylor email forwarded to another (or several) email accounts. Follow these steps to set it up:• Login to your FirstClass email.• Select “Messaging.”• Under “Automatically Forward” change “Local Mail” to “Yes.”• Change “Internet Mail” to “Yes.”• Change “Method” to “Redirect.”• In the “Forward To” box, type your preferred email(s) – one on each line – and click OK.• You will now receive Baylor emails at this account.

Dear Parents,All Baylor students and parents receive a FirstClass email account. It’s important that you become familiar with FirstClass and recognize that the school uses this email system as our primary form of communica-tion with parents. This includes weekly BNews, Upper School and Middle School announcements, notices from teachers about academic perfor-mance, and more. We cannot over emphasize the importance of reading school emails. We recommend that you go to the Tech Support section of the Baylor website for more detailed information. Should you have any questions, please contact Tech Support at (423) 256-8506, ext. 349.

Your parent login and password for FirstClass email and NetClassroom grades are on the attached red card.

NOTE: Although this is a convenient option we cannot guarantee you will

receive all Baylor emails due to bounce-backs and SPAM filters beyond

our control. If you do choose this option you should check your Baylor

email account through the website to make sure you are receiving every-

thing from the school. Downloading the FirstClass client to your desktop

eliminates this problem.

ACCESSING YOUR NETCLASSROOM ACCOUNT

NetClassroom is where you will be able to access your child’s grades,

schedules, transcripts, and billing statements.

• Using the same login/password as your Baylor FirstClass email, click

on the NetClassroom link located on the navigation bar at the top

right of the Baylor website.

• When you get to the login screen, simply enter your user i.d. and pass

word that has been assigned to you, then click on login. This will

connect you to your child’s NetClassroom.

• Click on Students at the top of the page. You will have a drop-down

menu of options. Simply click on the appropriate link.

A Few Notes on Policies: We ask you to observe the school’s internet

use guidelines explained in full in Baylor’s Responsible Use Policy in the

B-Book and available online in the Tech Support section of the Baylor

website. Please do not solicit business through your Baylor email ac-

count. We also ask all users to avoid forwarding chain letters and other

junk mail, which can disrupt the system.

BAYLOR MOBILE

Go to: www.baylorschool.org on your smart phone to follow school and

alumni news, athletic information, access the campus calendar, view

daily announcements, and search the faculty and staff directory.

EMERGENCY TEXT NOTIFICATION

In the event of school closings due to weather and/or other safety

events, parents will be notified via text. You will be instructed on how to

register for this service in early September.

iPads

BNews

WHICH iPAD SHOULD WE PURCHASE? The iPad 2 and later versions are available in a variety of prices and configurations. The 16 GB, Wi-Fi only models, the least expensive option, are fully capable of handling students’ academic requirements. While the 16 GB model is sufficient for their academic work, students will be extremely limited in storing oth-er multimedia on the device; this includes videos, music, and pictures. For students who anticipate the need to have access to these types of media, a higher capacity model of the iPad should be purchased. The original iPad (iPad 1) or iPad Mini are not acceptable models for use at school.

CAN STUDENTS OPT OUT OF USING THE iPAD? Baylor is committed to using the iPad to supplement and enhance the traditional classroom experience, and each student is required to have an iPad for class.

The weekly BNews is the school’s primary communication tool with par-ents. The main feature page contains schoolwide news and also includes photo galleries and calendar items. Forget what you read last week? There is also a handy archive feature which enables you to search for back issues. The top “reminder” tabs are specific to news relating to the Upper School and Middle School. The BNews is emailed to all parents every Friday while school is in session.

WHEN WILL STUDENTS LEARN HOW THE iPADS ARE USED IN CLASS-ROOMS AND WHAT IS EXPECTED OF THEM? The first week of school is spent getting students oriented in their classes, which includes what Apps the teachers use, how to upload assignments, taking notes, or-ganizing their work electronically, and more. It’s no surprise that stu-dents catch on to the technology extremely quickly, but teachers are very aware of the need to make sure all of their students are comfortable using the technology.

WILL MY STUDENT STILL NEED A COMPUTER EVEN IF HE/SHE HAS AN iPAD? It is important to note that the iPad is not a replacement for a computer. Baylor still provides access to computers on campus to support specific programs. Students may feel more comfortable completing some assignments off campus on a computer. The iPad requires the use of the iTunes program, which is a free download available for both PC and Mac.
