a nuestro ritmo”.

PUERTO RICO DEFEATS PERU AND ADVANCES TO SEMI-FINAL
Havana, Cuba, March 20, 2015 –Puerto Rico overcame Peru 25-22, 14-25, 25-19, 25-20, and
26-24 and moves forward to the semi-finals where will meet tomorrow Dominican Republic,
one of the strong favourite teams to win the III U18 Girls’ Pan American Volleyball Cup.
Over almost two hours of hard battle, the match lasted. Dariana Hollingsworth (16), Ivania
Ortiz (14), Paola Salas (13) and the captain Joscelyn Coronel (10) excelled by the Caribbean
girls.
Maricarmen Guerrero and Leslie Leyva (both with 11), and Katherine Regalado, who
contributed with 10 points, led the Peruvian attack.
“As usual we prepared, but for this match we made emphasis on the performances of Peru and
we could decode their game a lot. It really helped us to control a little the powerful attack they
have on the corners. We came for the qualification. It was not possible, but finally we are
among the top-four of the event. Now we are aimed at reaching the final”, expressed the
Puerto Rican coach, Luis Aponte.
Joscelyn Coronel, the Caribbean captain, considered that ”it was a difficult match as both
teams have an equal game level. However, we overcame them due to our greater
concentration. Also my team-mates did an excellent job. We are pretty happy.”
Spaniard, Juan Diego García, coach of the South Americans, reflected on “in the first set we
had the game very well controlled but we let it go. It caused the Puerto Ricans tip the balance.
Some times we did not change the service well and it conditioned our game too much. We did
not have crystal clear that one of our strengths must be block-defence if we are not able to
change the service correctly. It is something on which we are working for the major event in
2015, the U18 WCH to be held precisely in Peru next August.”
Their captain, Nicole Abreu, indicated at the beginning they entered too much unfocused, “but
we were leading the game. It was when we were overconfident. In the second set, we reacted
and tied. However it was impossible for us to win, we lost concentration, and we did not know
how to return to our rhythm.”
ARGENTINA WINS OVER CHILE AND DEBUTS IN PAN AM SEMI-FINAL
The Argentinean team won over Chile 25-14, 25-14, and 25-17. Argentina has qualified for the
first time to a continental semifinal and will meet Cuba tomorrow in the penultimate day of
the III Girls’ U18 Volleyball Pan American Cup.
In a 68-minute match, the unique players who had a double-digit tally were by the wining
team: Anahí Tosi (17), and Brenda Churin and María Corbalán (both with 10). On their rivals,
Karen Morales was who contributed the more with 7 points.
“Everything came out as planned to meet Chile. Although it seems now that it was an easy
game for its result, at this age and girls’ category, it is never effort-less; particularly for the
concentration. We are happy for playing versus Cuba in semi-finals. We had already done it
against the Dominicans, Mexico, Peru which are all qualified to the U18 WCH. It is quite helpful
for the development of the girls”, assured Mauro Silvestre, the Argentinean coach.
The captain, Azul Benítez, expressed that ”we are pretty happy as this team has moved
forward to a Pan American semi-finals for the first time. Between tomorrow and the day after
tomorrow, we would want to win a medal. We are glad to play against the best teams in the
NORCECA. Today we served well. I think we showed a better attitude than the rivals who
entered very quiet and probably under pressure as we have defeated them in the last two
South American events.
The Chilean coach, Hugo Jauregui, was disappointed for the worst match of his girls. “We were
not in the game. Argentina did not let us play either. In addition, neither there was attitude
nor fighting spirit, and we were not at the height of the circumstances. We did nothing well in
any aspect. So we are called to keep on training to be able to correct these errors in the
future.”
Their captain, the setter, Catalina Reyes, stated sadly that “we had a bad day. We played
awfully. We did not do it at the level we used to. I do not know if it is a matter of tiredness. I
am ashamed of having lost in such manner.”
